Not A Lot Goin' On - Corner Gas News February 2026 - We're Back Special!

I know what you're thinking. You shouldn't be thinking such things! Naughty!

Also you're thinking, "Where on earth have you been Ian?"

Well I could tell you of my adventures, around the world. Seeking lost treasures with nothing but my pistol, whip and quick wits to get me out of a sticky situation. I could mention about the time spent in self discovery, realising we are all nothing but batteries in a giant machine and using newly found super kung fu powers to help free the human race from it's evil captors. Then there's that time I had myriad adventures in Singapore, Bahli and Morroco pausing only briefly to sing few show tunes with Bing Crosby.

I've no need to tell you about these things. You would have seen the documentaries they made about them already.

You probably assumed that I gave up on all this Corner Gas mularky once the animated show was prematurely cancelled a few years ago. Nothing could be further from the truth. I just moved my base of operations over to Facebook. If you haven't already, head over to your FB app and search for "Corner Gas Fan Corner: The Group". There I realised that I could spread the good word of Dog River to a lot more people, a lot quicker than I could here in my little interweb nook. I still cover all the latest Corner Gas news and beyond. We have nearly 10,000 members (lovingly dubbed Jackasses or Hammerheads) a friendly bunch, all ready for a good time and a giggle - sharing all their favourite Corner Gas moments. If hot dogs are your thing, we have you covered as there are roughly 773 pictures of Chili Cheese Dogs shared on the page every day! So come and join, we will be glad to see you. Hank is not our fault!

So why come back here now?

Two reasons.

First and foremost, 2026 will be our 10th year in business! It's a momentous occasion that I intend to celebrate with you all. Seems crazy that it was all that time ago I was sitting in a small theatre, in North Vancouver, listening to Brent Butt crack wise, thinking "How can I get a ride on these coat tails?" Ha, ha - I jest! I actually came away from that show wanting to share my love of Brent's work to the rest of the UK who, at the time, were mostly unaware of his genius. I say genius. Just incase he's reading.

The site was just going to be a little project to distract me from accute anxiety. I was not expecting anyone to read my jokes about their jokes, as I am often known to say. Somehow, it grew into this great big thing! Thanks to unexpected support, initially from Craig Northey of Odds and then the whole Corner Gas team this daft blog turned into a sensation. Dozens of hits a week. Yeah, take that Logan Paul!

I am influencer now, right?

Joking aside we got very busy, especially over on Facebook. I still drop in here to check how things are going and in recent years things have gone crazy. Which is the second reason for coming back to, hopefully, writing regular posts.

The last few months have seen our vistor number explode. So many new readers from far flung countries. Where's my Transitria* peoples at? There you are! Ain't you lookin' mighty fine! It's been a very exciting time watching the stats blow up. If you are new here, welcome! Thank you so much for heading our way and joing in our love of Canada's finest.

So what better time to get a few posts going again, see what the old Corner Gas gang is getting up to these days and have another look at things they were doing in the old days too. Here's what you can expect during our tenth anniversary run -

Just to kick off, and so you don't think I got you here under false pretenses, here's a few morsels of Corner Gas news fodder to keep you going for a little while. At least until dinner time.

NEW FRED

We in the Fan Corner office were very excited when our hot desk received word that everyones favourite Fred is working on an all new project. I say office, the room gives off more of a living room vibe if I'm honest. Hot desk isn't entirely accurate either. My end of the sofa would probably be a description that wouldn't get me into trouble with trading standards. I got a text is what actually happened.

Mr Ewanuick, Hank Yarbo in your favourite show, will soon be seen in "American Hostage".

American Hostage is an anthology series based on the popular scripted psychological thriller podcast starring Jon Hamm of "Shrek Forever After" fame. I think he was in some other stuff too, probably in roles requiring a rugged chin.

Filming has reportedly been taking place around Winnipeg, Canada over the winter months of 2025/2026.

Fred told us he has an important role, intergral to the story. Details are being kept under wraps but Fan Corner will bring you more info later in the year.

We would also like to point out that Winnipeg is what Christopher Robin used to hang Pooh on when he was finished with him for the day.

ODDS ON FAVOURITE

2026 is turning into quite the year for returns. Fan Corner, Fred and now Odds too!

The boys have announced a series of gigs in and around Vancouver in February 2026. At time of writing, if you stop reading this drivel right now, you won't be too late to pick up tickets. Here are some dates for your rock and roll diary -

Monday 9th February - Duncan, BC - The Duncan Ballroom

Tuesday 10th February - Port Alberni, BC - The Rainbow Room

Wednesday 11th February - Nanaimo, BC - Queen's

Friday 20th February - Vancouver, BC - Commodore Ballroom

The guys will be banging out all the old classics and no doubt a few of the exceptional tracks from their latest release "Crash the Time Machine". The new album was released during this sites little hiatus so I take full responsibility for the fact that you have never heard of it. Now you have, you've no excuse but to go and purchase it from this link. It's available in all formats, most of which are circular.

The Commodore Ballroom show promises to be a very special occasion. The opening act for Odds will be Strippers Union. A slightly lesser known band but equally as talented. Their members are Craig Northey (Odds), Murray Atkinson (Odds), Doug Elliott (Odds), Pat Steward (Odds) and Rob Baker (Not Odds).

Yes, essentially Odds are opening for themselves. However, this band is a side project started by Craig Northey and Rob Baker of the legends that are Tragically Hip. They have produced three albums of their own music all of which will be covered in posts coming up as part of our tenth anniversary celebrations.

Pat Steward is unlikely to be playing Drums at these gigs as he is currently lending his rumpty dumpties and bisherty boshings to the mighty Bryan Adams. Pat has been touring the world with Bryan and can be heard on his most recent albums. He's back in the arms of the band that bought his genius to the world stage. Odds tub thumping has handed over to the great Kurt Dahle. His previous bands have included Limblifter, Age of Electric and The New Pornographers (really, who comes up with these names!) However, Pat was in town for the Odds last big show and did make a suprise appearance so keep your fingers crossed that he may well pop up.

Please note. For anyone over the age of 50 I will be auditioning for my new tribute band shortly. Tailored for the elderly fans of Canadian rock. I look forward to touring with "Tragic Hip Replacement" very soon.

LORNE IN BC

In Lorne news. I saw an very well shot video, on Facebook, which was about British Columbia. It was full of wildlife. Trees, Waterfalls and Rocks. Not necessarily in that order. There was also a bloke in a suit which was clearly a very dapper looking Lorne Cardinal. Lorne was also doing the narration of the piece.

Only thing is, I can't find it on the net now. It must be out there somewhere. Either that or it was a fever dream bought on by excessive fondue consumption over Christmas. Anyway, I'll find it and bring it to you as soon as possible. The ad. Not the Fondue. The Fondue is all gone. Burp.

I can confirm that Lorne still owns the best hair in the business.

Not A Lot Goin' On - Corner Gas News - February 2021

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "What happens if I chew a toothpick and I get a bit of it stuck in my teeth? Then I have to use another toothpick to get it out, Then that breaks and gets stuck. Would I enter a dental hygiene time loop and disappear into a rip in the continuum?" You're also thinking "Where have you been Ian?!"

Well the question should really be where haven't I been, because I haven't been everywhere, just like the rest of you. It's a great time to get one over on your well to do friends who would normally boast about their holidays. When they tell you "Well, we didn't go to the house in St. Tropez this year" you can top them! You're answer should be "Well we didn't go to the Summer House in Jamaica, the Ski lodge in Switzerland and we also didn't take the Mediterranean Cruise" Winner! Take that posh nobs!

Now, with these fictional holiday destinations in mind, you could say I vacation all year round in Dog River. As fun as that may sound even I have to get out and see other places. So every year I take January off from this site. Kind of a detox if you will, of all thoughts of chili cheese dogs and pants found at the side of the road. This year that break seeped into February as well. There is good reason. I got lazy. What better reason would you need.

I'm back now though, you lucky people! I'm going to catch you up with all the latest from your Corner Gas favourites.

WHERE SEASON 3 ENDS SEASON 4 BEGINS?

During Lockdown there have been infinite opportunities given to us to be be bored out of our tiny minds. Luckily respite was given in Canada and the U.S. in the form of ten weeks worth of televisual excitement! Corner Gas Animated Season 3 hit the screens and made the world better again with a whole bunch of well needed giggles. Reports coming back to the Fan Corner office have been largely favorable and have suggested that this has been the best season yet.

The crowning glory of the season was the first animated Christmas special "Tinsil-Itis" which aired December 14th 2020. As an extra special bonus Crimbo gift Brent Butt and Craig Northey bought us a CGA (you know that means Corner Gas Animated right? Saves me typing it a million time in a post. Told you I got lazy) music video. The hilarious song "Everyone Can Sing at Christmas" was released with great fan fare with a live stream and message party with Brent, Craig, Nancy, Fred and other Corner Gas royalty in attendance. We all sang badly with along with the tune (because that is the point right? That's my excuse anyway) as they said hello to the folks that joined the group. That's pretty much all they had time to do because the clip is only a few minutes long. It was fun though. Here is a link to the video in case you wanted to get the Crimbletide feels all over again. However, Season 3 came to and end and now we are all on pins waiting to see if and when Season 4 will hit our screens. Well here is an exclusive for you that I am not entirely sure if I am supposed to share or not. However, when I have been given similar info previously I was told it wasn't a problem to share so I'll carry over that permission to this paragraph. If you try and come back to the site next week and find it has disappeared you'll know that I was wrong and I am currently sitting on the naughty step.

Season 4 is on the way!

As far as I am aware, the new season has not been given a green light. It would be more accurate to say, there has been no official announcement of Season 4 being given a green light. Usually the announcement comes an hour or so after Tara Spencer-Nairn as already Tweeted about it and then within a week and change we know the air date for the first episode. The reason that things move a long at a clip like that is because work on the show has been taking place almost from the moment the gang down tools on the previous season - all sneaky like.

The same goes for Season 4. I am sure I have mentioned before, some time ago, that development on the Season was taking place just in case they got the go flag from the network so the team could remain ahead of the game. Well, if you follow Brent and the others on social media you can easily come to the conclusion that things have progressed quite a way since then. Voice records have taken place and are still on going. So, with this in mind, I think we can safely say Season 4 will be with us soon. How soon is yet to be revealed but if I were a betting man I would say we will see some new Dog River adventures sooner rather than later, maybe in the old April/May slot that Seasons 1 and 2 filled.

STRIPPERS ON THE LOOSE

A few weeks back Craig Northey's other, other, other band, Strippers Union has released a new album!

The Undertaking is available now from the link above (click the pic). It is a mammoth, 18 track, double album. Craig and his band mate Rob Baker of Tragically Hip have created something very special. Musically, lyrically and artistically this third album from the super-group is something very special. There will be a proper full review coming very soon here at the site.

Half of the tracks are also available on your favourite streaming services but, for now, the only way to get hold of the complete recording is on limited edition, white vinyl. If you order from the link above you will also receive a signed certificate.

MAGNUM OPUS

On the special video edition of The Jackass-Cast (available here) Brent mentioned he had written a novel. Well here is a picture of him holding the manuscript celebrating the achievement.

No details are known as to the plot other than I do know there is a character of Irish decent. Brent has mentioned that to ensure he got the correct feel to the character and didn't use incorrect terminology or colloquialisms he sent a copy of the book to his friend, Irish comedy legend Ed Byrne.

I am, as I am sure you all are now, looking forward to the book getting published. As soon as I hear of any developments I'll bring them to you right here. Well, not right here - on another post - don't keep re-reading this page or anything. Well you can if you like, I could do with the viewing numbers on my stats.

Brent is also working on a new screenplay. Again, in our last chat he told me that it wasn't coming along quite so well as the book. I ribbed him by boasting I finished mine. In my head it was just a little jovial aside that might promote discussion of the difficulties of coming up with a workable piece of fiction. You know when you say something and immediately wish you hadn't? That was one of those times.

DR. BRENT: MEDICINE DUDE

Always working Dr. Brent has created a brand new vaccine for the dreaded Covid -19. I thought this was very funny and made me shoot Coffee out of my nose.

NANCY AND THE SUPER SQUIRREL

Fan Corner got the drop on a very strange, but intriguing, new movie Flora and Ulysses over a year ago. The movie is the story of a young girl and her squirrel friend who happens to have super powers! Well the film, based on a book of the same name, is finally here for you watch if you subscribe to Disney+

Nancy Robinson features as Tootie who is a character who interacts with other characters and in someway helps move along the narrative of the story. No I haven't seen it yet.

Maybe the trailer will help us all figure out what is going on,

TRENDY TENDIES

A new company appeared in my suggested pages to follow on Instagram the other day. I would normally ignore such suggestions as they usually include people trying to sell me bit coins and scantily clad ladies who are probably not actually scantily clad...or ladies.

MURRAY FOR THE WIN!

Odds guitar legend, Jackass-Cast guest and all round good egg Murray Atkinson is on a roll. Not only have his two episodes of The Jackass-Cast become the most listened to episodes in the history of the show but he is now up for a distinguished award. I'm not sure which is more important but I know Murray must be chuffed to ribbons on both counts...probably.

The track #Grinding from his amazing new album Mubla Tubed has reached the semi finals of the International Songwriting Competition. I wish Murray all the best of luck in the up coming final, I am sure we will all have our fingers crossed for a well deserved win!

In the social media that went out for the goodies also mention that they feature the characters best known phrases. Being honest I would argue that statement. That said the new shirts and mugs are all sorts of cool.

My Facebook pages lit up with the age old question as soon as I mentioned the release of new coffee mugs. Is there a Corner G and the Rub mug now available? Alas no and whilst we are on the subject, no further word on the release of a replica Brent Work-shirt. Let's hope the powers that be will bring them out eventually.

See, if I was doing a set of mugs I would have one with Oscar saying "Jackass" and one with Brent saying "Hammerhead" with images that linked if you place both mugs together. It would look like they were having an argument on your kitchen table (and the guys get double the sales - you're welcome!) Oooh! You could have Davis on one saying "I'm Car One!" and another of Karen also saying "I'm Car One!" - link them together and on the reverse of the mug ...cop car behind the surveillance bush! OOOOH or one of those heat reveal dealies and the picture IS the surveillance bush and when the hot drink is added to the cup it reveals a cop car!!! #mindblown #marketinggenius

Corner Gas is fun! Christmas is fun! Things don't get much funnerer right?

Wrong! A simple equation can show us how fun may be amplified with just a few math type things like professors at school used to tell me about, you know, adding, taking away and that other one with the line and the two dots.

Corner Gas x Christmas + Santa - Oscar / Baubles + Tinsel = FUN-A-PALOOZA!!!!

That's right it's Fun-a-palooza time again! Here we have a bunch of Crimbo Corner Gas puzzles and activities to keep you and Granny out of trouble in the last few minutes of Christmas Eve before Santa arrives to deliver your order of presents this year. I mean, you don't want to blow it with some last minute naughtiness do you? You know how Granny gets after a few Gins so you'll need to keep those naughty hands of hers busy so she doesn't ruin your chances of getting that Limited Edition Jimmy Kimmel Loofa and Pedi Egg set from the big man.

So why not start off will a bit of yuletide colouring in with your bestest crayons! Check out the picture below and fill it in with all the colours of the rainbow. You might want to print it out first - don't mess up your screen or anything.

Oh, you may notice a little bit of colour left around some of the areas of the picture. That sort of a guide so you know which crayons to use and has nothing at all to do with the area fill widget on my image manipulation programme not being able to detect the outlines properly.

With a Little Help From Friends - Vela

We've all had a bit of a rough time of it. However, it is times like this where we grow and learn to appreciate life and our fellow human beings. It's a great time to offer a helping hand where and when we can to make someone's life a little easier.

That's where this series of posts comes in. I like to highlight charities, with a little connection to Corner Gas, that I hope we as a community can get together and give a little of our love, time and maybe a few spare dollars, dimes or pennies.

Last year I bought to your attention Vela Canada.

Lets hear from one of Vela's board of directors. Gabrielle Miller.

Vela is a non-profit society that provides information and mentoring to individuals with disabilities and their trusted others to take greater control of his/her life by exploring ideas and options that can lead to customized, inclusive and creative supports and services. This is done by the forming of a Microboard or accessing Individualised Funding. They are currently struggling and need help which is something I think our little global community (67,000 of you and counting - thanks for reading by the way) can do in spades

What is a Microboard and Individualised Funding? I'm glad you asked, because I didn't know either, so I looked it up.

A Microboard is a small group of committed family and friends (a minimum of 5 people) who join together with the individual to create a non-profit society. It is a formal support group that may also access funding the individual may be eligible to receive. The board helps the individual

plan his/her life;
brainstorm ideas;
advocate for what they need;
monitor services and ensure they are safe;
connect to his/her wider community; and
do fun things together.

A Microboard can also access funding and deliver the services that the individual needs. Together you can create services that are creative, flexible and reflect the needs of the individual. Funding may come from a government agency such as the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Community Living BC, the Ministry of Health, a trust or a settlement. If the Microboard does not want to access funding and deliver the services, the individual may still choose to access Individualized Funding.

Individualized Funding (IF) is a payment option for individuals served by Community Living BC (CLBC). IF lets you use the money given to you by CLBC to create new, different kinds of services that will support you in your community. With IF the individual chooses a trusted family member or friend to be the Agent. The Agent can access the funding in two ways:

Direct Funding: Where the Agent, receives the funds and purchases the supports and services needed. This means the Agent directly employs or contracts with caregivers and takes care of all of the administrative responsibilities.

Host Agency: Where a Host Agency service provider, chosen by the Agent, receives the funds and provides the supports and services needed. This means it is the Host Agency that employs or contracts with caregivers and takes care of all of the administrative responsibilities. (A Host Agency is an agency that has been approved by CLBC to administer Individualized Funding and work with the individual and his/her Agent to arrange and manage the services.) Vela provides information, support, and guidance for those interested in Individual Funding and/or Microboards. There is no charge for their services in British Columbia.

Vela have been outstandingly successful. Since 1990, they have supported the creation of 1,100 Microboards in British Columbia. As a result they have been asked to help international family groups, organizations and governments to do the same. They have provided information and/or mentored groups in other provinces of Canada; Australia; a number of U.S. states; Ireland; England; and Northern Ireland.

What I have bought you here is the very basics of what the charity do. The work is very important, helping disabled individuals by providing support and funding to overcome any difficulties the individual may need to overcome.

This is a fantastic group and I urge you to visit their website for more detailed information. When there you can find information how you can either become involved or make a donation.

At this time of year when we think of our loved ones why not also think of others that might need or at least benefit from a little bit of help and support. Not A Lot Goin' On - Corner Gas Animated Breaking News Special

There I was, a mild mannered, not quite billionaire, philanthropist, Majong Championships regional finalist 1997, reclining on my chez lounge, next to the the roaring electric fire (only one bar on, it's not winter yet you know). I was enjoying reading my priceless 5th edition, reprint, ebook, of the complete works of Drew Carey as my youthful ward continued his studies learning the intricacies of Latin. Pig Latin, but it still counts. My man Manfred lightly dusts my Grandma whilst singing his sleeper hit single "Doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy doo".

All is peaceful when all of a sudden Gray Dickson, youthful ward, points out of the window.

"Ook Lay! The Uttbay Ignal Say"

Unfortunately, I did not understand what he said as I never studied the intricacies of Pig Latin. I did, however, study Duck Latin in all it's forms.

"Uack Qay!" I replied.

Using all the detective skills I had to hand I produced my magnifying glass and used it to look for clues. I followed Gray's point all the way to it's natural end.

"Arrrrghhh!" I screamed as I saw all the pores at the end of his nose magnified to horrific proportions.

"You followed my point the wrong way!" Gray proclaimed

I looked out the window and there it was. My call to arms. The Buttsignal!

Immediately I ran to the bust of Drew Carey that hid the button to open the secret doors for the entrance to Corner Gas Fan Corner Headquarters. I smashed it with my fist. Then I smashed it with a hammer, a rock and my Grandma. I hate that button.

The bookcase behind me slid open to reveal two fireman poles. I had those two men arrested and took the stairs to H.Q.

The Butt-O-Matic Internet-A-Rama Scope 3000 (TM) was a blaze! Lights flashing, sirens sirening! That would explain the firemen from earlier...but didn't explain their poles.

"They are for sliding down" Gray spouted

"Don't be so silly, who would slide down a fireman! The friction alone would cause terrible holes in my jodhpurs!" I pooh poohed

I checked the internet and there it was. All the excitement came to this the most anticipated announcement

The excitement was palpable. Corner Gas fans around the globe filled their tweets and message walls with hearts and claps and little hug emojis in joy. One chap called Bill put Grumpy Face, Aubergine, Panda but I think he had just sat on his iPhone again,

So, I took to the net myself. Leaping to action, like a Gazelle in a spring factory, to spread the word and whatever else I could spread without fear of litigation.

It had been a hectic night. I fell from my keyboard, exhausted. What had I learned from the evenings events.

Corner Gas Animated Season 3 hitting the screens October 12th 2020 obviously. I had also learnt not to write a post this late at night after three coffees and a Batman 66 marathon.

Writing in My Happy Place - A Speculative Post

A little explaination before we get going.

If you have followed this site since the get go you will have spotted a few mentions of why I started Corner Gas Fan Corner. For those of you who just turned up to the party, hopefully with dips and a cheese selection, I'll catch you up real quick.

I used to be a stand up. Not a good one, but I was working the London circuit, figuring out how it works, polishing my jokes, learning. I wrote constantly trying to find my solid ten (minutes of material that works so well that it makes a the audience laugh hard enough that a comedy club owner may actually pay you next time you come round). I ran two radio shows on two different stations, also at a non professional level. They were full of characters and skits all devised and written by me.

However, parental guidence made me think comedy was just a hobby and not something you could make a living at. After University, I gave it all up to get a "proper" job and pay the bills.

20 plus years later, for reasons I won't bore you with here (go back and read the original posts if you fancy) I needed to get the creative jucies flowing again and course correct. So I started to write again and, with the click of her fingers, Lady Fate snaps me to where we are today.

Writing Corner Gas Fan Corner has been a learning curve. All the while that I am knocking out a post every week here, behind the scenes I have been trying to teach myself how to be a better writer. In my research I discovered a way in which writers try and break into television.

I decided to give spec scripts a go. So, whilst in lockdown, I started putting some ideas together, did some book learnin' and soon after I had written my first sit-com episode. Guess which show I decided to write for first?

I have been at loggerheads with myself about publishing it here. However, I figured - what the hell!

I am aware that I can not use this script outside of a portfolio of work to hand to a Manager who will use it as an example of what I am capable of achieving to try and get me work. That is a long way off. So, this would just be sitting on the laptop getting digital dust all over it. Might as well let people see it.

I do want to make it very clear though. This is my work, it is fan fiction. I have not been asked to write this or been given permission to do so. I present this here for your entertainment purposes only. This work has no connection to the show or anyone who works on it. It has been written by me for my own educational purposes. I just happen to think it turned out pretty good and would like to share it with you.

I have no doubt a professional would look at this and immediately think it stinks up the joint. If you read this, professional or not, I would love to hear your feedback. Please leave comments in the section below if you have the time. If you loved it or hated it and why. What worked, what didn't. It will help me work out what I am doing right and, more importantly, what I am doing wrong. That way I grow as an artist. Well, grow as a wannabe at least.

Also regular readers may recognise the cold open as being a re-hash of the Corner Gas in Space bit of silliness I wrote a few years back. I think it works much better in this format and has a much funnier payoff. Brent, Andrew, David and just about everyone else I spoke to were correct in their dismissal of the space theme. They know what they are talking about! Whodathunkit!

Dog River Denizens - Mike O'Brien

Being a top flight biographer is a very difficult job. Don't get me wrong though, it's not the most difficult job, there are many others that are much harder.

Imagine what it was like to be the guy scientists chose to prove all snowflakes look different. That chap was Barry Lemon-Curd, well, that was the name he signed on the forms when he was institutionalized. Spending ten years running around the arctic trying to catch two snowflakes in a net will do that to a fella. The day he snapped was when he finally caught two at once, put them under his magnifying glass which instantly caught the sun and melted both flakes and burnt a whole in Barry's new mittens.

That's a hard job.

Another hard job would be the person who composes Whale song. Playing a Tuba underwater is a tricky business. Your snorkel gets in the way.

If you read my posts regularly you know I always moan about the lack of information there is about many of the actors featured in Corner Gas. The details I give often have to be so broad that you could drive a car through them. As there is a lot of guess work involved I also have to tailor them to avoid litigation. This month not only am I very happy to bring you this, long awaited, biography of the wonderful Mike O'Brien but I am even happier to announce I found all sorts of details on his work and life to share with you. Yes! Finally, the fifty quid I spent on my "20 Steps to Easy Cut and Paste" online course is paying off!

I am also pleased to say Mr O'Brien manages to continue the tradition of having a Namey Twin (TM) to cause a smidge of confusion when researching. This time round the other Mike O'Brien is actor and writer best known for his work on Saturday Night Live. This makes me very happy as I can string out the gag for a 14th consecutive post.

Mike was born December 29th, 1963 In Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and grew up in Inuvik, a town in the North West Territories. He studied at the University of Victoria concentrating on Creative Writing and graduated with a degree in the subject.

During his time at Uni Mike had worked at five different weekly newspapers around British Columbia. Being that he had discovered a skill for making people laugh early on in his life he had considered a career in acting, however, he decided to follow the path of a Journalist. He took his first position with The Medicine Hat News (which seems a very niche subject for a newspaper- Doctors must have a lot of head gear) in Alberta. After spending around two years at there he moved to Regina to become a reporter for the Regina Leader-Post. He was a reporter at the Post for fourteen years and covered a wide range of news subjects, even reporting from abroad.

It was in Regina that Mike started acting again and appeared in amateur theatre productions. He eventually joined CBC Saskatchewan as a radio producer.

In 1999 Mike wrote Calling The Prairies Home a book that discusses exactly what the title suggests. The book includes a bit of everything. History, Philosophy and Mike's trademark humor. Giving a wonderful view of life living on a Prairie, the book is a huge hit with readers. Reviews give the work a five star rating across the board (keep an eye out for mine - coming as soon as my copy arrives from Amazon).

It was around this time that he started to act again and won roles in film and television starting with commercials and eventually appearing in movies. This would all lead him to his regular role in Corner Gas as fan favourite Wes Humboldt liquor and insurance store owner.

His first listed movie role dates from 2001 an independant movie. Cast as "Thin Man", which I guess he was well suited for, in Solitude a story of a young Friar looking for truth within a Monestry who finds love where he least expects to. Must have been down the back of the sofa - always the last place you look for love.

In 2002 Mike featured in the short movie by Billy Morton The Stuff That Makes You Lift Cars. Mike plays Dan the host of a dinner party attended by unwilling guest Keeper and his girlfriend. All Keeper wants to do, like a lot of us when these events occur, is stay home and watch Hockey. The movie is wonderfully funny and well observed. Ordinarily I wouldn't post a link to a movie on You Tube but seeing as it appears to have been uploaded by the writer/director I figure I'm safe.

During his run in Corner Gas Mike would also get to work with fellow Dog River Denizen Fred Ewanuick in Hollywood Romcom Just Friends. The movie stars a young and upcoming actor Ryan Reynolds who after this seems to have done very little. The cast also features Amy "No Clue" Smart. No not like she hasn't got a clue, she was in the Brent Butt movie No Clue. Well, I assume that's correct, I don't know the lady. If she was stupid I would imagine her surname would get her into all sorts of trouble with the trades description people,

Just Friends is the story of a socially awkward chap who changes his life after being rejected by his high school crush. He turns into a serial womanizer who meets the girl again one Christmas. Will he become the loveable nerd again or continue on the new path he has chosen? The movie has an excellent cast including the always funny Anna Farris and Chris Kline. Mike rounds things out with his role as a Hockey Dad.

Mike was incredibly busy around this time, fitting in his Corner Gas role with many other appearences. In 2005 he became a comedy writer for CBC Radio. His dream job, situated in Winnipeg had him writing sketches and columns that appeared on shows on CBC around Canada. Later in his career, 2011, he would have his own radio show, Strange Animal.

After his run on Corner Gas Mike continued to work in film. In 2008, the same year Corner Gas came to an end, he starred in another short entitled The Rooster. He played Ray Gherling a Vietnam vet residing in a mental institution who needs to convince his Doctor to release him before the last of his memories of a former life leave him forever. I had a thorough search around the net, for at least five to six minutes, and unfortunately the short doesn't appear to be readily available to watch. This is a shame as having of Mike in a dramatic role is something I would very much like to see

2008 Mike was featured in another regular role in popular comedy Less Than Kind as Lorne Goldstein. The show followed 15 year old Sheldon Belcher (possibly related to Bob Belcher of Bob's Burgers which just shows how nepotism is still rife in the entertainment industry) and his tribulations living in Winnipeg with his less than functional family. The show ran for four seasons and Mike featured in 16 episodes. It seems the show was very popular, I wonder if they need a fan site created for them?

2009 Hollywood called again, this time to feature in a fish out of water comedy New in Town starring A-Lister Renee Zellweger and her original face. The movie told the story of Lucy Smith, big time business women from Florida adjust to small town life in Minnesota. Think Lacey, with less Chili Cheese Dogs. Mike played factory worker Lars Ulstead and can be seen in the trailer below - if you click the picture.

In 2011 Mike was diagnosed with Cancer. He continued working in television and film as well as writing for radio,

Now, when I write for this site, and I come across information that is sad or maybe a little sensitive I will either brush over it briefly or leave it out all together. I do this for fear of upsetting someone who may read my work and from a belief that certain things shouldn't be for public information. It's nobodies business that X likes a certain detergent to wash his or her undies in. It doesn't come from a place of morality it comes from being British and that sort of thing is just not Cricket.

However, Mike made his illness public in the most amazing Blog it's ever been my pleasure to read. His diary of living with his illness is equal parts touching and funny. Very funny in fact. The site is called The Big Diseasy and is a masterful piece of work the Mike created with his wife Robin Summerfield.

I'm living it, and I see moments that are funny. So you can't tell me there's no humour in it. You could see the exact same situation as me and not see the comedy. That's fine. But just the way I'm geared and wired is I'm always on the lookout for that. If you're sitting in a waiting room, an emergency room, waiting to see a doctor about some side-effect, if we can crack a few jokes we're going to feel better... I have cancer, it's going to kill me, but that doesn't mean it beats me. Because it certainly hasn't stopped me having wonderful experiences for four years, and a really great life.

The quote essentially relates the bravery that shines through all the posts on the site that span over a two year period.

This in itself makes me want to rethink my policy of avoidance in certain issues. Maybe I shouldn't shy away from joking about a sensitive subject. Treating the subject with humour, but also with respect can be healing, it can be helpful. It doesn't have to be in bad taste and can help us all to understand and bring us closer together.

I have learnt many things from Mike's writing. One thing was that Mike had a hand in writing a cookbook which I didn't find mention of elsewhere and have therefore missed out from the above post. It is nearly tea time and I can't go back an add a passage about the book or my sprouts will boil over. So lets all assume it's a great read and possibly has a recipe involving cheese and another with chocolate in it.

I am not going to tell you the ins and outs of the site as I would love for you to discover them for yourself. The World Of The World's Biggest Things From Around the World

This week I would like to discuss Hanks idea about getting an errection in the middle of Dog River. Not just any pertruberance either, the biggest one you have ever seen! Hank wanted his representation to stand proud in the middle of a field and that people from miles around would pay him to have a look at it. He could charge extra if someone wanted a picture. Maybe they could pose leaning against it. If they were really clever they could stand in the foreground, with Hank's sturdy effigy in the distance behind them and it would look like they had it in their hand!

I am of course referring to the world's largest hoe! Wait, what did you think I was on about?

In Season 1, Episode 6 Hank wanted to bring the classic roadside attraction to Dog River. Now, this isn't the first time this money spinner has been thunk of. There are many towns all around the world that have used the draw of a world's largest something to bring in the tourist bucks. Unfortunately, not all of them have the added bonus of sounding a bit rude.

Roadside attractions have been popular since the 1920's when long distance road travel became practical. Entrepreneurs began building restaurants, motels, shops and other businesses to attract travellers. All over America novelty architecture started to pop up and often depicted common objects from the local area in enormous size.

The trend, along with the businesses, declined when Interstate Highways were introduced. However, many of the attractions still remain and new ones added to towns not only in the States but in Canada and around the world. A popular oddity that amazes on lookers with it's unusual take on the world around it. A bit like Hank.

Let's have a look at some of the best largest things from around the world.

ENGLAND

WORLDS LARGEST DISCO BALL

This was created for Bestival, which is a festival with an over inflated ego. We don't have many largest things over here so we were very excited when this exhibit was unveiled. This ball was eventually hung over the site of the festival and lit up with a large array of lights. Many passers by reported seeing unusual things illuminated in the sky to the authorities. These people were arrested for drug offenses.

FRANCE

WORLDS LARGEST GATHERING OF SMURFS!

Ok, technically this doesn't count. I just like the idea of driving down a quiet French country road, probably on the way to a vineyard in a chateau somewhere, when you happen to drive past a field full of grown men and women standing about painted blue with pointy white hats on. No explanation, no signs, just a sea of Smurfs.

..oh wait actually France has this too

WORLDS BIGGEST BALL OF TWINE

This is, of course, the biggest ball of twine in Darwin, Minnesota! As immortalized by the classic song by Weird Al Yankovic. Never heard it? Well in the next 7 minutes and 42 seconds you will have!

I don't know what drives someone to create such a thing. I can only assume there was nothing on telly that night and Francis was fed up with his wife moaning about all the twine he had lying around the house.

Now, the most important thing to remember when putting up a dirty big thing in your loaclity is to make sure that it does not enforce any national stereotypes that may exist about your country.

WORLDS BIGGEST MOOSE

Apparently that memo didn't make it to the local council in Moose Jaw who errected a huge Moose in their front garden. I notice they also have a full size plane in the picture above. This is actually a still from a new King Kong remake that is on the way to cinemas - only its not a monkey this time, it's a dirty big moose. The statue has been given the Mac. Shortly they will be adding a smaller baby moose statue to the monument called cheese. So we can all go and visit Mac and Cheese very soon!

WORLDS BIGGEST NICKLE

The world's largest Nickle stands proud in the Sudbry skyline. It's actually value is $550,000 and yet when I tried to use it towards my bus fare the driver got very snippy with me. Well he shouldn't have asked for exact change! Doesn't get more exact than this!

WORLDS BIGGEST STARSHIP

Now this is right up my alley. The biggest Starship Enterprise. Found in the town of Vulcan, south of Calgary next to a Star Trek themed visitors centre. It was made so large as it now houses a massive collection of all the hair peices and corsets William Shatner wore between 1967 and 1992.

This is just a small selection of all the giant mouments that can be founded dotted all around the world. So, when I get short of subject matter, I'll return to the subject and we will visit all these wonderful places together. It will save you the air fare. You're welcome.

IT'S MY 100th POST!!!!!!!

Over my short time standing above my feet on this little blue green planet of ours I have filled my time with many different projects. Most of my grande schemes have come and gone and have only been realised as far as being a scribble on a post it note that says "Re-usable post it notes?"

The closest I ever came to finishing a project was the time I decided to build the worlds greatest go kart out of the shopping trolley I found abandoned in a local pond. I put in at least a full half an hour of back, and ground, breaking work. Have you ever seen a stealth fighter jet? Well imagine one of those only with a couple of wheels attached to the front with hairy string. That was my go-kart, in my mind. I had built the mechanical equivalent of a Maclaren F1 racing car, only faster, and with a Ghostbusters sign painted on the side.

Nice try! Not as good as my kart!

I took the cart to the top of my street, with it's perfect camber for a test drive. I elected my mate Duncan as the crash test dummy. Of course there was no thought of using any sort of safety equipment, like a helmet or knee pads, as this was the 1980's and such things didn't exist. With a bigger push forward than when manifest destiny was a thing Duncan was off with a WHOOOOSH which, 2.3 seconds later, was followed by a BAAAANG! This was obviously the noise of the sound barrier being shattered by our revolutionary new vehicle.

The power of hindsight is a wonderful thing as I now realise it might not have been the best idea to start our test circuit on a massive bend. I pottered around the corner to be greeted by the site of my friend upside down in the gutter with the cart on top of him roughly three feet from where he had been launched. He was fine, only one leg was pointing in the wrong direction. There was the distinct smell of burning skin in the air, emanating from his hands where he had been frantically trying to steer the cart with the hairy string. I probably shouldn't point this out but he was driving without a licence or any sort of insurance.

Reconstruction

So when I started Corner Gas Fan Corner I never expected to have the tenacity to keep it going for four years and counting and reach this 100th post!!! I also didn't expect to see over 55,000 people around the world read the thing. I thought a few curious onlookers may stop by and have a poke at it to see if it was alive. A bit like that old lady did to my friend Duncan with her walking stick.

So I figured I better do something special to celebrate the momentous occasion. Only problem is I didn't know what to do. I did consider publishing the pictures I had taken of myself at that boudoir photographer I hired last summer, a very special treat for you all I am sure, but I had forgotten about the injunction.

Then the timing gods rained down on me their fortunes! Corner Gas went and chucked out a whole bucket load of exciting news. So let us celebrate my milestone by writing up some of the shows own on the blackboard of televisual history, in the font of fact, using the chalk of recognition.

This week saw two tweets roll out with exciting announcements. The first I have dealt with sometime ago. It seemed like an official announcement of Corner Gas Animated Season 3.

If you follow my news posts every month you will know I covered this quite a way back. Season 3 has been in the works since before Season 2 aired and has been a long time in production. There have been a few minor delays as was reported in my recent interview for The Jackass-Cast with David Storey.

The recent pandemic also caused new health and safety measures to be taken in the recording studio. The cast are split between two cities, Vancouver and Toronto. Ordinarily they would record together via the means of the wonder of modern technical hoofer doofery with a connection over the net between studios in both cities. Now tracks have to be recorded individually with only one person in the studio and engineers and other technical bods hidden in the safety of other rooms and such like.

Brent even posted showing him recording on the 67th floor of Sparrow Media Towers.

However, with the new announcement I think we can assure that an air date will not be far behind. Previously, the month of August was mentioned (I suspect by accident) in a tweet from the official Corner Gas account in reply to a fan message. This could ring true, however, in last weeks release announcement the second season of Jann was also mentioned and given a fall release date. Maybe this is an indicator of when we can expect Season 3 from the gang. I'm only guessing. Let's just say we will see it's release between now and the air of Season 4 and pat ourselves on the back when we are proved to be correct!

No, that doesn't mean that there is a Season 4 guaranteed. I was given the ok by David Storey to announce that work has already begun, on Season 4, in readiness of an official green light from the bods on the top floor. I have been told that nothing is guaranteed but personally with the shows continued success at award time I will eat my perfectly good par of roadside pants if it doesn't happen. Speaking of awards, didn't we do well!! Corner Gas Animated Season 2 romped away with more Canadian Screen Awards.

Best Performance in Animation - Brent Butt and Eric Peterson

Best Writing in Animation - Kate Hewlett and Diana Frances

Best Direction in Animation - Stephen Evans and Mateusz Garbulinski

Our winners were Brent for best performance and Diana Frances for best writing. Congratulations to both of them and all the nominees. In fact, congratulations to the whole crew. Here's what went on on social media when the winners were anounced.

I recently added my definitive list of Corner Gas awards to the site here. It covers the original six series run and the movie. I will be adding a Corner Gas: Animated award page very soon.

Another award winner has been Molly of Denali, which features our very own Lorne Cardinal. The show which features the adventures of 10 year old indigenous girl Molly and her friends and family as they discover cultures around the world.

The show won The Peabody award for best show in the Children and Youth category. Here, cut and pasted for your convenience, is what the press release regarding the decision to make the show a winner had to say -

An alarming 20% of Americans believe Indigenous people no longer exist. And only 13% of state history standards across the U.S. cover information about Native Americans after the year 1900, while American media depicts Native characters almost entirely in historical settings. Molly of Denali, the charming story of Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native girl who helps her parents run the Denali Trading Post, represents the Indigenous traditions of Alaska Natives as a living cultural tradition which has much to offer us at the current moment, from environmental consciousness to community belonging and creative expression. Alaska Natives play central roles in all aspects of production. WGBH mentored six Alaska Native writers to produce scripts for season 1 and trained more than a dozen Indigenous children to play key voice-over roles or appear in live-action segments. The resulting series puts strong emphasis on cross-cultural communication, research and literacy skills, and environmental consciousness, but beyond that, the show has sparkling characters, compelling stories, and richly detailed settings. For helping to shift the ways that the next generation will think about Indigenous people and for giving native media-makers a central role in shaping their own representation, Molly of Denali deserves a Peabody.

As we can see the show isn't simply another children's cartoon but is of considerable importance and a huge achievement by all involved.

Many of you will also have been following Lorne in the hit T.V. show FBI: Most Wanted. The show has been so popular, it was the highest rated show on the U.S. for it's season, it has it's very own twitter handle! Keep up to date with all the latest from this fantastic series by following @MostWantedCBS.

Being that I have been following the show with interest I would imagine my Google has been flagged somewhere for keep looking out FBI Most Wanted far too often. If you do the same be sure to add "t.v. show" into your search or possibly have to replace your windows when special forces bust through them on ropes, waving dirty big guns about. Does any one know the number of a decent glazier?

Recently Hallmark released a new installment of their Martha's Vineyard Mystery series. Riddled with Deceit features a turn from Gabrielle Miller as Rebecca Lane. The story follows former detective Jeff Jackson as he teams up with Dr. Zee Maderias to track down a missing emerald brooch, a thief and a murderer!

Now, that last sentence I took from IMdB and don't get me wrong, it's a perfectly fine sentence. However, if the detective is looking for an emerald brooch before he searches out a thief and a murderer, you have to wonder about his ability to prioritise. I am sure all will be made clear in the movie. Hallmark often re-run their latest productions so please check your local listings to see when you can watch Gabrielle in action.

In recent posts I have covered the new movie starring Daniel "The tall one who gets an iron in the puss in Home Alone" Stern. Sci-Fi Comedy Drama James vs His Future Self, which features Tara Spencer-Nairn, is now available to buy from all your favourite sources such as iTunes and Google Play. Anyway, I have digressed. Way back at the beginning of the post I mentioned there were two announcements made about the third season. I got so excited about all these other shenanigans I almost forgot to tell you about the second one!

Corner Gas: The Definitive Award Guide

It is hardly surprising that come award time every year a quality show such as Corner Gas will be knee deep in nominations. It is even less surprising that it would romp away with lots of shiny gongs. Can you imagine the bookshelf in the Corner Gas office covered in statues. It's probably one of those flat pack jobs too, the shelves sagging in the middle under the weight. Some poor soul has to dust all those and keep them shiny. It's always housekeeping that suffer the most when someone goes and creates themselves a multi award winning show you know.

Speaking to the cast and crew of Corner Gas I have found that awards are not at the forefront of their minds when producing the show. Quite often, as you will see in a moment, members of the cast and the writers are nominated against each other for different episodes from the same season. Brent Butt and Andrew Carr have both reported that they will glower at each other from across the table at an award ceremony that could see either one of them walk home with an award in a carrier bag. It's all in fun though, they and all the others are just happy to be nominated.

Below is a spreadsheet showing every nomination and win that Corner Gas received over it's original six season run. Before we get into that, here is a run down of all the awards mentioned on the sheet and a bit of their history for you.

International Emmy Award

Founded in 1969, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS) is a membership based organization of leading media and entertainment figures from over 50 countries and 500 companies from all sectors of television including internet, mobile and technology. It is part of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences; however, it operates under its own board of directors with a global focus. Today, it also recognizes excellence in U.S. programming with a Non-English language U.S. primetime programming category.

The first International Emmy Awards, as we know them today, were carried out in 1973, and was organized by Ralph Baruch in a ceremony held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The event was attended by about 200 guests.

Currently, the awards are presented at the International Emmy Awards Gala. Held each year in November at the Hilton Hotel in New York City,^[the Gala attracts over 1,000 major figures in broadcast, entertainment and media from around the world.

Gemini/ Canadian Screen Awards

The Gemini Awards were awards given by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television to recognize the achievements of Canada's television industry. The Gemini Awards are analogous to the Emmy Awards given in the United States and the BAFTA Television Awards in the United Kingdom. First held in 1986 to replace the ACTRA Award, the ceremony celebrated Canadian television productions with awards in 87 categories, along with other special awards such as lifetime achievement awards.

In April 2012, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced that the Gemini Awards and the Genie Awards would be discontinued and replaced by a new award ceremony dedicated to all forms of Canadian media, including television, film, and digital media. The first Canadian Screen Awards were held on 4 March 2013.

The Geminis covered only English-language productions. The Academy also organizes a separate awards show French productions known as the Prix Gémeaux.

They are widely considered to be the most prestigious award for Canadian entertainers, artists, and filmmakers, often referred to as the equivalent of the Oscars and Emmy Awards in the United States, the BAFTA Awards in the United Kingdom, the AACTA Awards in Australia,the IFTA Awards in Ireland, César Awards in France and the IIFA Awards in India.

Directors Guid of Canada Awards

The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) is a Canadian labour union representing more than 4,800 professionals from 48 different occupations in the Canadian film and television industry. Founded in 1962, the DGC represents directors, editors, assistant directors, location managers, production assistants and others.

The Directors Guild of Canada hosts an annual awards ceremony recognizing achievement in directing, production design, picture and sound editing.

Canadian Comedy Awards

The Canadian Comedy Awards (CCA) is an annual ceremony that awards the Beaver for achievements in Canadian comedy in live performance, radio, film, television and Internet media. The awards were founded and produced by Tim Progosh in 2000.

The CCA have been held in different cities, most often in Toronto and London, Ontario. Between 2003 and 2015, the awards were held as part of the Canadian Comedy Awards Festival, with showcase performances by nominees and other comedic talent. The Comedy Network broadcast the first two award ceremonies and several specials of festival performances. These broadcasts have earned two Gemini Award nominations.

The awards are artist-driven with a mandate "To recognize, celebrate and promote Canadian achievements in comedy at home and abroad." They are run through a non-profit organization and volunteer committees, drawing membership from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA), the Canadian Actors' Equity Association (CAEA), the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC), the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC), and the Comedy Association. Some awards are determined by industry members while others are open to public voting.

Actor, director and producer Tim Progosh founded the Canadian Comedy Awards (CCA) after touring for over 20 years in sketch, improv and stand-up comedy. He felt that there was a distance between stand-up comedians and other comedic artists, and that stand-up and comedy as a whole wasn't receiving adequate national recognition. With the establishment of The Comedy Network in late 1997, Progosh felt the time was right to create a national comedy award and comedy hall of fame.

Writers Guild of Canada

The WGC Screenwriting Awards (previously Canadian Screenwriting Awards) are administered by the Writers Guild of Canada, and are awarded to the best script for a feature film, television or radio project produced within the Guild's jurisdiction, written by a guild member in good standing, and broadcast or released in North America or screened at a Canadian film festival for the first time in the previous year. The awards have been running for over 25 years.

Leo Awards

The Leo Awards are the awards program for the British Columbia film and television industry. Held each May or June in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the Leo Awards were founded by the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia in 1999. Awards categories are numerous, and include but are not exclusive to live action, animated, adult dramatic, children's, documentary film, documentary television, feature films, short films.

The British Columbia film and television industry provides more than 25,000 jobs and generates more than $2 billion (Canadian) in economic activity each year, making the industry an integral one to the economic and social vitality of British Columbia. The Leos were established to provide support and recognition for the work of film and television producers, writers, directors, performers and others.

In 2005, the Leo Awards Film Festival was added to the event as a means of showcasing the best in film and television production honored at the festival. However, due to limited financial resources, the festival was cancelled in 2010

Dog River Denizens - Kevin McDonald

There's an awful lot to like about Kevin McDonald. For one thing his appearance on Corner Gas as Marvin Drey The (A) Taxman is always on top of the fan favourite lists. However, here is a short list of my favourite things about him before we get going.

1. He continues the tradition of actors that have appeared in Corner Gas that have names that are the same as other people of public interest causing me much destress in my research for this post.

2. His height on IMdB is very specifically listed as 5' 9 1/2"

3. He was an extremely excitable guest on the Buttpod.

It is not every day that you get to write about someone who could legitimately have the word legendary attached to his work. I suppose you could argue I get to do that every day Brent Butt, Janet Wright, Eric Peterson no doubt all deserve claim to the title for their body of work. Kevin McDonald in his part as a member of The Kids in the Hall comedy troupe has absolutely earned that hallowed of statuses.

The Kids in the Hall were, and still are, game changers. Their brand of unhinged, unapologetic comedy smashed down comedy barriers and turned televisual comedy on it's head.

Kevin McDonald was born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of Sheila and Hamilton "Hammy" McDonald, who was a dental equipment salesman. He moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of seven after hi father was transferred there. His family subsuquently lived in Toronto, Ontario as well.

He had a very close relationship with his mother, however, his father suffered from alcholism. His father would later become the inspiration for Kids in the Hall sketches "Daddy Drank" and "Girl Drink Drunk". Kevin would also use his relationship with his father as the basais for a one man show, Hanmmy and the Kids, in which he said he had no happy ending to the story of his father.

McDonald briefly studied acting at a community college where he was kicked out for being a "one legged actor" (i.e he could perform comedy but not drama). However, one of his professors, William B. Davis (of X-Files Smoking Man fame), saw McDonalds potential and encouraged him to pursue improv comedy by giving him the number to The Second City in Toronto.

Kevin founded The Kids in the Hall comedy troupe with his friend Dave Foley in 1984. Their name came from a quote made by legendary comedian Sid Caesar who, if a joke did not go over well or played worse than expected, would attribute it to "the kids in the hall" referring to a group of young writers hanging around the studio. The group also included Bruce McCulloch, Mark KcKinney and Scott Thompson.

The Kids in the Hall series debuted as a one-hour pilot special which aired on HBO and CBC Television in 1988 and began airing as a weekly series from July 21st 1989 on HBO and September 14th the same year on CBC.

In the TV Show and the stage shows Kevin portrays several popular characters such as the King of Empty Promises, Sir Simon Milligan and Jerry Sizzler. A frequent running gag was that Kevin is the least popular member of the group and always struggling not to get kicked out.

In the U.S. the first three seasons were on HBO before it moved to CBS in 1993 where it stayed for two more seasons airing late on Friday nights. The troupe ended the five season run of the show in 1994.

The guys followed the show up with a the motion picture Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. The film follows the usuers of a new antidepressant, GLeeMONEX. The drug, rushed into production to help failing company Roritor Pharmaceuticals, after it's inital over night success has devestating effects on all those involved. Kevin is the main protagonist, Chris Cooper, the inventor of the drug who gets swept up in the resultant fame that follows the success of his invention. Unfortunately the high concept movie met with poor critical reception and was a bomb at the box office.

During the filming of Brain Candy the troupe were already in the throes of a split. Dave Foley was the least involved in the ptroduction of the movie as he was starring in popuar sit-com News Radio.

Since 2000 Kevin and the other members of Kids in the Hall have reunited for a number of tours and televised performances. The troupe played the 2007 Just For Laughs Festival, where McDonald also performed his one and a half man show Hammy and the Kids with Craig Northey, based on his two dysfunctional families, featuring stories based on life with his father "Hammy" and The Kids in the Hall.

In between working with the other kids Kevin has appeared in many television and cinema favourites. He can be found in episodes of Friends, The Drew Carey Show, Ellen, Clerks:Animated and Arrested Development. He can also be seen in the recurring role of Pastor Dave in That '70's Show.

In 2006, he hosted a CBC Television special, Sketch with Kevin McDonald, featuring several of Canada's best-known sketch comedy troupes. The special received two award nominations in the Canadian Comedy Awards for the Best Taped Live Performance catagory.

He also works extenisivly in the voice over world. In these stakes he will be best known as Almighty Tallest Purple in cult favourite Invader Zim. In cinema he can be heard as the voice behind Pleakley in Disney classic Lilo and Stitch and all it's sequels, spin off and games.

2010 saw the Kids return to the television with a series heavily influenced by the U.K.'s own cult series The League of Gentlemen. Death Comes to Town was an eight episode mini series that deviated from the troupes usual sketch format and featured a story that had the residents of fictional town Shuckton, Ontario cope with the murder of their mayor and try and discover who the killer is.

It was announced recently the Kids will be returning to our screens on Amazon Prime with a new series of their original sketch show. Eight episodes have been ordered and will be the first Canadian Amazon Original show. At time of writing no air date has been set.

For more information on Kevin and The Kids in the Hall I highly recommend that book "The Kids in the Hall - One Dumb Guy" by Paul Myers which I would imagine has had much more effort put into it than this post has.

Cooking with Gas (or Electric) - Rice Krispie Rectangles

There are many elements that are absolutely crucial when creating a culenary delight in the kitchen. Excellent ingredients, exsemplary cooking utensils and equiptment for example. However, top Dog River Chef, Mr. Oscar Leroy would have you believe that there is something far more important than these mere basics of the trade. According to Oscar the number one thing that any one even attempting to put together even the simpliest of desserts should consider is Geometry.

Recently his wife Emma, offered to purchase for him some Rice Krispie Squares to wit he pointed out they are never squares, they are rectangles.*

This doesn't often happen but I am afraid I am going to have to agree with Oscar on this one. On further investigation it would seem that geometry is indeed of vital importance when performing the art of cookery.

In the 70's it was extremely popular to eat things that are inside other things. As we can see from these examples without geometry dinner in this decade would have all gone to hell in a hand basket!

See how if the jello to fruit ratios were off in any direction, and not placed at exactly the correct angle to it's ajacent piece of fruit and or jello Grandma's lap would be full of Kumquat pieces as soon as pudding was served.

The 70's were truly an age of innovation when it came to geometrical cuisine. The next picture is an example of the groundbreaking research that took place at the Festmat i Vackra Monster Schweiziska Institute in Sweden**. Such was the accuracy of the placement of these party foods that if you follow the pattern to it's natural mathmatical conclusion the deviled eggs were always pointing due north.

Of course, they didn't always get it right back then. There was little, if any, health and safety available at a 70's dinner table. The following picture contains everything that was expected in a typical 70's packed lunch. In 1974, my Father used to work in a very popular Sideburn factory in London, England. This was in the middle of the Sideburn boom, everybody was wearing them and at one point demand could not be met. Unfortunately, he was caught in the big hair crash of 1979 and was made redundant. Luckily his skills were transferrable and he soon got work making Mullets in the early 1980's. When he had his union required lunch hour this is typically what he would find in his lunch bag.

Now as we can see this item contains everything that was required of a period dish. Food inside of food, food sticking out of food and everything beautifully in alignment. However, these delights were banned after a particularly enthusiastic food fight took place and everyone ended up in the eye hospital.

Now, as Oscar correctly points out, the geometry fad has sadly left the food world long behind. Cookery has never been the same. I can hear you thinking, angles and the likes can't be that important when making, say, a cake? Think again! Consider the humble Hedgehog based birthday cake.

You can't unsee that now! A thing of nightmares. Oh for a protractor and an even vague idea of what a Hedgehog actually looks like! I don't think I fancy biting into a cake that might actually bite me back!

So you don't make similar mistakes, and in honour of Oscar and his requirement for accurate cake dividing systems, here is a recipe so youmyou can make your very own delicious Crispy Marshmallow treats.

INGREDIENTS

Makes: 24 ~~squares~~ rectangles

45 grams butter
300 grams mini marshmallows
180 grams rice krispies
edible glitter or sprinkles (optional)

METHOD

Melt the butter in a large, heavy-based saucepan over a low heat.
Add the marshmallows and cook gently until they are completely melted and blended, stirring constantly.
Take the pan off the heat and immediately add the cereal, mixing lightly until well coated.
Press the mixture into a greased 32cm x 23cm tin / 13 x 9 inch pan; you may have to put on vinyl CSI gloves and press it down into the corners, as it will be very sticky. Flatten the top and then scatter over the edible glitter or sprinkles, if so inclined.
Let the marshmallow crispy squares cool completely in the tin and then cut them into 24 ~~squares~~ rectangles

I hope you enjoy this most right angled of treats. What more evidence do you need of the genius of Oscar Leroy? Just in case here's one more example of a kitchen without a ruler in its drawers. Spongebob Squarepants - the clue is in the name!

Who Done It? - The Mystery of Tanner: The Truth Revealed - Part Two

Where do babies come from? Truth is, nobody really knows. This answer was the result of my painstaking research conducted at the age of seven. I am in fact paraphrasing my Dad when he replied to my questioning "Well, you're a mystery!" I consider this scientific result sound and have felt no need to conduct any follow up research.

Until now.

As you will know from my previous post we have yet to come anywhere close to resolving the mystery behind Tanner Vincent Dollard's complete parantage. We only have 50% of the answer in fact.

I decided that I should pick up my ground breaking research to see if it would help us all get to the footnotes on this page in the Dog River history book.

Well, this Saturday morning, the answer seemed to fall straight in my lap. According to the work of one Mr. Chuck Jones and his associates Mr. B. Bunny and D. Duck, babies are delivered to their parents by a Stork! An enebriated one at that. Now, on many of the Storks documented deliveries he always delivers the wrong baby! So this could mean that Tanner actually doesn't belong in Dog River at all.

It seems the Stork works in a similar vien to a postman. This would mean that someone had to put the package in the system as it were. There is still a culprit. We still need to delve deeper. So here are some more, in order of appearence, suggestions starting where we left off in our previous scribblings.

SPARKY TUXFORD

Sparky/Slim/ Clarke Tuxford - maybe

There is not a lot known about Sparky other than he has two brothers and may possibly be dead, depending on which brother he actually is*. However, there is plenty of evidence that he may well be the father of Tanner.

Here is England a Sparky is slang for some one who has the chosen profession of an Electrician. Now, from the evidence provided there is no suggestion of Mr. Tuxford's main sour of income. We could there for speculate that Sparky is a nick name. If we cobine the two lines of thought he may have come by that nick name for a number of reasons -

1. He has (had) an electric personality that he used to win over Wanda**

2. He may have visited Wanda's to provide a service

3. He's very useful with his tool

SLIM TUXFORD

Sparky/Slim/Clark Tuxford - maybe

There is not a lot known about Slim other than he has two brothers and may possibly be dead, depending on which brother he actually is*.

However, we can immediately illiminate Slim from our investigations due to the accident in the Corn Lift involving mistaken identity, a mouse and a pitch fork.

CLARKE TUXFORD

Sparky/Slim/Clarke Tuxford - maybe

There is not a lot known about Clarke other than he has two brothers and may possibly be dead, depending on which brother he actually is*. However, there is plenty of evidence that he may well be the father of Tanner.

Clarke apparently has (had) big teeth. This detail alone could be enough to put him as the winner in the race to find the father of Tanner. Simply because he won all the races he ever took part in by sticking his head in front of the pack and his teeth would cross the finishing line first.***

When he was mentioned in the episode Pilates Twist I thought I finally had the answer. Then I realised that when Brent said "Then he carried on bagging onions" this was not a euphamism and I realised that I made the same mistake as a cross eyed dog chasing a cat and had barked up the wrong tree.

PAUL KINISTINO

Paul, booze slinger at The Dog River Hotel, has had many an opertunity to woo young Wanda Dollard. In fact this photograph provides excellent evidence as to his possible responsiblity for child support back payments.

This image was taken just seconds after he offered Wanda her usual and she replied "No thanks Paul, I'm designated driver for this young fella in my Winnebago if you know what I mean!"

Initially, Paul thought to himself, "Wanda doesn't drive a Winnebago?" He gave it a moment and then, well, just look at his face. Is he remembering an evenings romance in the corn field after a box of wine (that was nearly a box of ketchup)?

All we need to find out is if Tanner has a decent ponytail and we could have the answer to all our questions

Not A Lot Goin' On Isolation Special - Corner Gas News April 2020

Well if there was a more apt time to say that there is not a lot going on it would be right now. At time of writing the population of the whole world has been attempting the world record for the longest game of hide and seek ever. It has all being going swimmingly, however, unfortunately before we all locked the doors behind us we forgot to find out who is "it". I have spoken to the world powers for you to see if we can figure out who it is we are supposed to be hiding from. The chap I was speaking to was very muffled, sounded like he had a face mask on, if I heard right it seems we are to be on the look out for a young lady called Corina, she's about 19. After that details were sketchy at best.

So, with everyone hiding behind the sofa like a child of the 70's watching Doctor Who, you would think I wouldn't have a lot to report. Well actually I probably have more than usual to send your way.

I make light of a serious situation but I think it is important wring as many laughs out of everything we can in times like these. It is amazing how the global community can come togther by the super highway of gigabites and broadband to try and raise a smile from their front room to yours. In this respect the Dog River Denizens and colleagues are front and centre.

Tara Spencer-Nairn was a front runner - almost literally. Early on in lockdown she took to her Instagram account and invited us to join in with her fitness routine. Unfortunately, I can't bring you the whole video as on Instagram live footage disapears after 24 hours. I was present on the feed and I can confirm that Tara is crazy good at skipping rope based antics. I was all out of breath just watching for five minutes. The feed lasted about ten minutes and Tara was a blur of legs and ropes.

Mr Fred Ewanuick seems to be taking to more sedate ways to pass the time in his house. According to a recent Instagram post and a reply to a twitter question Fredrick has been in the kitchen cooking up tasty treats and is solely responsible for the supply of baked goods for girl guides to sell door to door.

Lorne Cardinal and Monique Hurteau being two of the most creative beings on the planet took to social media to bring us a little cheer and a message for everyone.

Music abounds from all our Corner Gas Fan Corner friends. Craig Northey the worlds busiest musician has been cranking out the tunes alone in isolation with all his band mates. "How is that possible Ian" you ask? The TransCanada Highwaymen released this version of Barenaked Ladies classic Alcohol. The recorded all there parts separately, Craig mixed them and handed them over to Cole Northey to edit them all together into a natty little music video.

TransCanada Highway Men is a supergroup comprised of Moe Berg from The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy of Sloan, Steven Page ex Barenaked Ladies and that Craig Northey bloke. Using the same method they then released this cover of Sloan's - Ready For You. Craig takes an unusual seat behind the drums for this one.

Craig is obviously very busy scoring Season 3 of Corner Gas Animated at the moment. Production is still taking place for the new series of our favourite show at the moment. All the production team are able to continue apace using all the latest technology available. A few people have asked but I have no details as to when the season will be released. One tweet I read that came from Corner Gas Official's feed suggested that Summer is likely to be when we get to see the new episodes. Craig found that he had five minutes to spare between his regular gig and putting together the tracks above. His fingers started getting twitchy so he jumped onto the net with his other, other, other band The Steven Page Trio which also features the talent tornado that is Kevin Fox to record an early version of new single penned by Steven Page cleverly entitled "Isolation"

I always marvel at these creative types. Where on earth do they get their inspiration? You know how the old tymey singles used to let you have multiple versions of the same song? Well I can do that here for you at Fan Corner. Here is another solo variant of the same tune from Mr. Page.

Well this is turning into a very Craig centric post so lets fill you in on what Brent and Nancy have been doing....before I return to more Craigy shenanigans. Nancy has been busy learning new life skills using Brent as a willing Guinea Pig. Well at least I assume he was willing. Brent filmed the whole harrowing affair and posted it to his Buttpod You Tube channel.

Now, being follicly challenged like my lookey likey Mr Butt I do feel his pain. This isn't the only pain Nancy decided to inflict the net with recently.

Well this is all good an well but you would think that Craig Northey would pull his finger out and get some work done for a change wouldn't you!? Well turns out that during the five minutes he found he had free earlier some of it wasn't used up. So he called up Doug, Pat and Murray - his chums from Odds and gave us a couple of new tunes to have a jig around to in our preferred dancing space. First was a cover of "Hello There" by Cheap Trick

Not statisfied that his days work was done Craig got the boys to rock out to "Uncontrollable Urge" by Devo. The video gave Doug a chance to show off his previously unacknowledged sledging skills!

When the boys finished playing they realised they had a bag full of musical notes left over that they hadn't been able to use. So they used them all up, except for two spare D#m's and an A7, with this snippet of a song by some band called The Beatles. Ths was used for UKUA Radio's tribute to healthcare workers.

So there we are. All caught up for another month. I know it's tough out there at the moment. It will all be back to normal soon. I wish you and all your families love and happiness and hope you are all safe and sound at home. If you get bored don't forget you always have your friends at Dog River to tune into. Wanted to bring you on our walk, especially those who can't get outside. My family - @moniquehurteau, Jake + I are on a trail called Wonderland (Larry + Clarisse are curled up at home). Jake just had surgery and he's doing great (that's why his neck's shaved). My neck is shaved so it doesn't get caught in my jacket zipper. Socially-distanced hugs from all of us in Squamish ❤

Here we go folks, as promised, the second episode of Season 2 released earlier than scheduled. At time of writing the world is in lockdown due to the dreaded lurgi out to get us. What we all need now is a few laughs and good times. Hopefully this will help with that a little bit, my lovely chat with the amazing David Storey.

We talked for a good long while a month or so back and took in everything from David's music, James Bond and Skiing off mountains to Corner Gas and beyond.
