Chu’s Day

The author, Neil Gaiman wrote, “I read it to my nephew Ronan, who is three. He made me read it to him again, then spent the rest of the day wandering around the house pretending to sneeze, very very loudly.”

Bad things happen when Chu sneezes. But expect good things to happen when you read his story to your little ones.

Bartholomew Biddle   LOOKS like a picture book. But it’s not. Yes, it has pictures, lots of pictures, 46 different illustrations according to Matthew Myers who painted the originals. But at 96 pages long, this is not a two minute bedtime book to read a three year old. (THAT book is Neil Gaiman’s Chu’s Day, coming in January. I will address it later.)

You’re going to buy this book for an older child, a first or second grader who needs a little meat in order to be satisfied. A sense of adventure would come in handy, too. Because Bartholomew Biddle  is an adventure. Actually, it’s three adventures before Bartholomew makes it safely home again.

But before you pass it on to that older child, read Bartholomew Biddle yourself. Is that you (or me) mindlessly keeping the rules as we drudgingly show up for our jobs each day? Is that you or me (or, one of our children) trapped in a school “with all rules and no learning?”

Could we fly if we dared? I think we could. And when you read Bartholmew Biddle and the Very Big Wind, maybe you will believe it too. (Then encourage the kids who read it to believe as well.)
