Corning NY Step by Step

A vacation glimpse of Maryland and DC

Although this is a picture blog about Corning NY, I’d like to share photos I took on a recent two-week visit in Baltimore, Maryland, Washington D.C. and points in between.

I tried to stay true to the types of photos I normally post, so while you might see a few from well-known tourist attractions, most will be focused on less-appreciated scenes.

If you like to try out new foods like I do, head on over to my food blog, Step By Step In The Kitchen for a look at food establishments I visited in that tri-state area. Tri-state because my trip included a stop at Arlington National Cemetery which is in Virginia.

Twenty-two photos ~ more than I usually include. And, this was trimmed down from many more, to the ones I liked the best.

The opening photo was taken in a sculpture garden outside Hirshhorn Museum within the complex of Smithsonian buildings. Yes, that’s me peeking out from behind the seated figures.

I arrived on a Sunday, to stay with family, and on Monday was out for my usual walk.

I passed a fellow on my way out and saw him again as I was walking home. He carried a book, so I asked if there was a library nearby. There was and on my second day, I headed in that direction. If I had kept going to the end of this block, I would have been there, but didn’t make it until another day.

We drove to Annapolis and sauntered up and down streets, passing the Maryland State House and visiting shops in the Market Place Shopping Center.

How many times did we ride the Metro? Three or four, I think. This was my first time ever. I liked it... the sights and sounds, the people. Really quite easy to figure out after the first couple of rides.

One Metro line takes you straight to the Smithsonian exit. Our first trip, we concentrated on the Museum of Natural History.

A sculpture garden in front of the National Gallery of Art included this one-dimension house, that seemed to move as you moved by it.

At the base of Capitol Hill and off to the side was the United States Botanic Garden. The current feature was a three-week orchid exhibit. Amazing, breathtaking form and color. This indoor exhibit was placed in conjunction with already existing live plants such as these side-by-side kumquat and coconut trees.

Outside the garden, before we ascended up to and around the Capitol building, this bird serenaded visitors.

A look at Winter 2012

Such a mild winter, comparatively speaking. Now in mid-February, after Pauxsatawny Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, it’s gotten colder but we still have a scarcity of snow, as evidenced in today’s photographs. Corning NY has seen little white, featuring instead a surfeit of grays. Personally, I like the color gray.

Remember Corning's Historic Walking Tour on December 5, 2011? It surprised me to find out that I walked by those signs several times each week and didn't pay attention to them.

Now I've gathered up more signs from around Corning that show there's a lot of history behind this community. Let me know if you come to town and find them when you take a walk (or a drive!).

Long shots

This opening photo was taken coming off I-86. You can see the parking lot for CMOG (Corning Museum of Glass, which is behind the big black Corning Inc. building also seen in this same photo. Free busses run all day from the parking lot to CMOG and on over to Corning's Market Street.

The next two photos were taken about a week ago when there was a tragic accident on I-86 just east of the off-ramp in the first photo Eastbound traffic was diverted from the highway across the Brisco Bridge, through the middle of Corning, onto Denison Parkway. You'll notice the heaviest traffic is going in one direction, southward. That bridge hasn't seen that many trucks in a long time!

Market Street, looking east. You can see the Palace Theater on the left. Centerway Square is a short distance past it.

Driving east on Denison Parkway, you'll see the Rockwell Museum on the left (big red brick building). Looking up the hill at the back of the photo, there appears to be a water tank. Is it? If so, I've not been too observant in the past. Will have to take another look.

I'm not sure about this photo. I know it's on the hilly southside and I think it is Sunset, just south of and parallel to Denison Parkway. I would have been standing on the end of Bridge Street. If I've got this wrong, I hope locals will let me know!

Back on Corning's northside, no memory of which street I was on, but I can see a cross street sign says Dodge Avenue.

These photos represent favorites of mine for every month in 2011. A few months, I just could not make a decision, so I included more than one.

As I browsed through over 1,500 photos I found myself on a journey made up of many small journeys. All the walks I took in 2011 were fresh in my mind again. I could see the big picture behind each snapshot. I could trace my footsteps and, often times, the thoughts that came to mind on my original walks.

The first photo, the one above that leads into today’s blog entry, is of Mike Sorge, up on a ladder, prettying up the place again. This is a November 2011 picture of the new storefront. Sorges Restaurant closed after a devastating fire on 12/27/2008 and reopened on April 21, 2010.

JANUARY ~

Northside, I believe. Remnants of Christmas 2010 and life in general.

FEBRUARY ~

Railroad tracks cutting east/west through Corning’s downtown. This photo was taken at Riverfront Park.

MARCH ~

A good indicator of the level of the Chemung River is this little island with its small stand of trees. In this shot, the river is quite high, but some of the island is still visible.

APRIL ~

A northside long shot that I cropped to show the variety of roofs.

MAY ~

Be sure to click on this photo to take a closer, clearer look. It’s May and lots of rain has brought the Chemung River up to a level where it’s beginning to cover early dandelions.

JUNE ~

The sunshine in June and the beautiful architectural structures of Corning’s southside made it difficult to pick just one photo. So, I included five!

Corning’s northside, just off Pulteney (Dodge Ave?). Love this old tree. Love taking photos of it.

I believe I took this one is on the southside in one of the alleys. Fresh, colorful flowers “framed” by old picket fence in need of painting.

SEPTEMBER ~

This tree intrigued me...

OCTOBER ~

Look at that sky. The clouds caught my eye and then I glanced downward and found the buildings. What a picture...

NOVEMBER ~

Apples or leaves. Leaves or apples. Oh, what the heck, include them both...

DECEMBER ~

The last month of the calendar year. It’s Christmas day and I have a new camera...

I was evidently holding the camera at a slant. I straightened it with iPhoto, then decided the slanted take was more interesting. Again, Corning’s southside, the west end...

Corning Headquarters ~ Reflections

Welcome to the New Year...

It's only been a week or so since Christmas and receiving my new camera. Still loving the difference this Nikon makes in the quality and detail in the photos I take.

I took these pictures of the front of the Corning Inc. headquarters building from a distance, then did some cropping on the computer.

I'm often surprised and pleased by what I see and photograph on my walks, but because the screen on the camera is so small and my eyesight is not so good, it's the finished product that sometimes takes my breath away.

What actually IS and what each of us SEES are not necessarily the same. Reflections can be deceiving. For instance, look at yourself in a mirror, then the next time you're walking on a downtown city street, look at your reflection in a window. Well, before I get too reflective, I invite you to enlarge each photo and notice what's really there... or is it?

Snow someday?

We haven’t had snow of any significance in downtown Corning yet this winter. Granted winter only officially started just over a week ago.

I want snow! Such beauty. Aside from the dangers of driving in it (which I don’t do), it looks so clean. You can take walks and appreciate the beauty of colors and textures framed by snow. Those who love winter sports can ski, sled and skate to their heart’s content.

Having said we’ve had only traces of snow, I’m offering you just a few of my favorite photos of our snowfall in February of last year (2010).

My Christmas Camera!

Merry Christmas to me! Yes, indeed, it’s a very Merry Christmas because my family gifted me with a brand new camera. This one allows me to take close-up shots from far away.

For instance, I stood on the Chemung River dike (northside) and took this photo of one of the out-buildings to the Benjamin Patterson Inn on Pulteney Street, two blocks away.

Then I turned around and took this shot of houses across the river on the southside hill...

From the same position, I panned right all the way past the residential areas and was able to finally see that what I thought was a lone house was really a houseboat...

My previous camera, a small, inexpensive Canon digital really did a good job, but never could get me close to the long shots.

Now I’m working with a Nikon Coolpix L105.

On the Bridge Street bridge, I looked up to the top and saw a pigeon. Look how close and clear I got with this new camera. Love it!

I looked down at J&T Auto Body Shop from the dike to see this one and zoomed in on the back of the bright red plow.

Just to give you an idea of what I can do with the new camera, I’m including a shot I took at three different settings. The first picture is the is what caught my eye, then I moved the lens in closer and took a closer one. I adjusted the lens a third time for the final photo.

CMOG ~ OUTSIDE AND ALL AROUND

The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) is a world-class attraction and has busloads of visitors throughout the year. Passengers disembark and head straight for one of the entrances. So, too, with those parking their cars.

Visitors wishing to learn more about the glassmaking process or perhaps make something themselves, head for The Studio just across a small parking area from CMOG.

Certain parts of CMOG's exterior are always noticeable. I decided to walk around the outside of the building and view it from less visible areas and to take note of adjacent structures.

D Building, in front of C Building (the 9-story "Black Box"), is a cafeteria with an outdoor seating area...

A rear view of C Building, just north of CMOG. If you're in the area during the Christmas holiday season, look for this building--at night--from anywhere in Corning. Certain office lights are left on to spell the word "NOEL" in giant letters...

On January 10, 2011 I started blogging on Bridge Street, one of two streets in Corning’s Gaffer District (aka downtown business section) That first entry was focused on the Bridge Street Bridge. I had intended to continue on northward in following blogs, but if you read the next entry, you saw that I got distracted by the Corning Fire Department.

These many months later, I’m finally putting the focus back on Bridge Street with photos taken at various times in the past year in this small stretch of businesses.

It's photos like this one that make me wish I had a classier camera with special lenses. But, for a small, inexpensive digital that I just point and shoot, it does a fairly good job. Remember, you can click on any photo to see an enlarged version.

Poor old building had an underlying bit of class and I thought the sepia effect would bring out its best...

Everywhere I walk in the City of Corning, I find a duplex. Often two or three are placed side by side or across the street from each other, obviously built by the same contractor. My previous blog entry featured quite a few of those duplexes.

Today's entry spotlights eleven more of these splendid structures.

Duplexes in Corning NY

A walk on the other side

When I was training as a life coach, one of the strategies we learned to introduce to clients was to look at things in ways totally opposite of their usual approach. Typically, we asked them to look around and tell us what they saw. Then to step up on a chair and look again. Just a few feet up (or crossing to the other side of the street) can make a huge difference in how we see our life and our surroundings.

Looking down at the base of a huge structure holding utility lines. I wonder how long it has been there and I speculate how long it will last...

Looking at the Bridge Street bridge from a totally new angle. Looming gray clouds bring concerns. Will it rain and I be soaked, or will the river send more flood waters eastward? I traveled east on Route 17 and into PA a few days ago and saw many signs of the destruction. Wouldn’t want to send any more their way...

Walking a ways behind Market Street, near the river, and looking up at the south side hill. I’ve taken shots of the area before but never from this location. I liked the severe lines in the foreground contrasted with the images beyond. St. Mary’s on the hill ~ beautiful structure.

Stroll into Autumn

A lovely morning for a Sunday walk. In spite of the cool, late-summer air, the sun was shining and casting beautiful contrasts of light and shadow.

Autumn officially starts this coming Friday and we're already transitioning from Summer to Winter.

Spencer Crest Nature Center

I've stepped out of bounds. The bounds being the city limits of Corning.

Just up the hill, behind Corning Community College is Spencer Crest Nature Center.

That's where my daughter invited me to go, along with my grandsons and several friends...

Just a short, beginner walk...

Park Avenue and Severn School

My walks used to last thirty to forty-five minutes. Walk quickly, stop briefly for quick clicks, then move on. Nowadays, it seems to be taking a lot longer. No, not just “seems”; it is taking longer, much longer.

Today’s walk started at 9:15 A.M and ended at 1:15 P.M. No, I did not walk the entire time: stood around a lot taking photos, sat on busses and sat/stood in stores.

To begin, I walked across the river (via a bridge, of course) for a stop at Wegmans. Not my usual order of things, but I wanted to catch a bus. Ten minute bus ride--they never go in a straight line to my destination--and I disembarked on Park Avenue next to one of the cemeteries featured in the previous blog.

My actual destination was Severn Elementary School, the only access being behind the cemetery ‘cause that’s where the school is.

Just to give you, my readers/viewers an idea of what the walks are like, here’s today’s route. You can surely find a map online and follow along if you’d like.

Off Park Avenue, take Lower Delevan Avenue just a block along the cemetery.

Turned left on McMahon Avenue which I had never heard of and I’m now in unfamiliar territory. Well, years back I did drive one time to the school for a brief visit. Shortly after turning onto McMahon, you’ll see Severn up the hill on the right. The cemetery is on the left.

I continued straight and found Severn’s access drive coming back down to the road. And, shortly after that, it was a choice of continuing straight on a path into a woody area or turning left and heading back out to Park Avenue...

I chose the narrow path through the woods, thinking bears, snakes, bad guys, whatever. Luckily, it was a very short path with great opportunities on the left for pictures of back yards and on the right of woody stuff...

The length of the walk from Delevan to the cross street as I exited the woods was probably less than one-quarter of a mile (not that I’m that good a judge of distance, but it seemed no more than 2-3 blocks).

I was tempted to go right, up the hill but had that decision taken out of my hands by paving machines that had taken over the higher levels of the road. So, I turned left and headed back down to Park Avenue.

One block back on Park and I turned left on Evergreen Drive which edged the cemetery. At the back of the cemetery I turned right and entered the cemetery itself and took photos until I exited at the opposite end, back on Delevan Avenue, then the hop, skip and a jump to McMahon, this time turning right. Less than a block later, McMahon turns into Cohocton.

I continued several blocks to First Street and eventually turned left on Columbia. Skipping a couple of steps in this description, I’ll only tell you that I ended up back on the east end of Market Street. Hungry and still a long ways from home, I stopped at Subway for a salad. Not my norm, but I’m testing life without wheat for the week. This Subway store will be moving, a block or so, to the other side of the street.

In spite of the fact that I’d already ridden a bus once today, I rode one home. That bus, too, has the inability to go in a straight line. After twenty minutes zigging and zagging, here and there, I was deposited practically on my doorstep.

Seventy-nine photos later, I was home.

All these words aren’t typical for this blog, I know. I promise not to make it a habit. Just for today, I couldn’t resist.

Remembering those who came before us

Some cemeteries aren't as obvious as others. For instance, I was exiting Denison Park recently and tried a little pathway which led to a small, very old, cemetery on Park Avenue, right across the street from a bigger, more noticeable one.

The older of the two, Gorton Cemetery, claimed its last resident in 1889...

Mary D. Owen died 1838 at age 31...

Time wears away body and soul, and old stone...

Polly was the wife of Moses Gorton Jr. She died in 1879 and lived to the very old (at least for those days) age of almost 76 years...

Jane, wife of Wm., died in 1840. Was she age 15 or 45 or something else? ...

Across the street, dozens of trees which have probably shaded these resting places for many, many years...
