A FAREWELL...

After more than three years of writing Corning NY Step By Step, I’ve decided it’s time for changes in my life. This is my last post on this blog, but I will leave it up on the Internet--for the time being-- so you can check back and view hundreds of photos of Corning NY.

I'll be leaving Corning NY Step By Step on Facebook for the time being and perhaps adding a photo now and then, but like I said, it's time to move on to new things.

Thanks to all of you who have followed me, and to my favorite blogger friends, I’ll still be following your blogs and commenting to stay in touch.

Mixing and matching again. Still on vacation and brought this collection of photos with me to post. Several from one year ago. The rest from October to December of this year. I love the colors of the fall leaves. They seemed to me to have changed so fast this year.

Corning NY December 2, 2013

Usually when I'm on vacation, I post photos of Maryland and Washington D.C. Which is where I vacation. Visiting family.

This time, however, I brought Corning photos with me on a flash drive. Time to use up miscellaneous pictures. All taken this year.

October 19... After deleting 7-8 similar pics, I couldn't decide between this one and the one above. So, you get both.

October 28... Taking photos from a hillside above the Patterson Bridge. Along came a man and his dog. Sweet dog once it calmed down and stopped trying to jump on me.

Again, I couldn't make a decision.

November 14... Bridge Street in the early evening. Traffic is heavy (for Corning) while the Patterson Bridge is closed (as in 'not there') and vehicles are detoured via Pulteney and Bridge Streets.

November 28...
Starlings, I think. They swoop from tree to tree in our neighborhood. A few days before leaving on vacation, I heard a loud sound go by my living room window several times. Looked outside and they were on the ground pecking and eating whatever it is they peck and eat. Every ten seconds or so, they'd swoop up into the sky, circle around and then come back down. Fascinating to watch.

Corning NY November 1, 2013

Roses don't bloom in cold weather, do they? This one did--on October 1--and there are still some blooming in sheltered locations even today, on November 2.

When I first started this blog about the unexpected attractions of Corning, I was casually taking photos on my daily walks. The blog evolved over time and someone suggested I offer more words to accompany each photo, which I've done most times.

I've been struggling with whether or not to continue this blog. What started out as a desire to have fun taking and sharing photos has turned into pressure to produce certain themes, regular postings and to learn more about my cameras.

I've seriously thought of closing down this blog and may still make that choice. But, first I'll be attempting to get myself back on track. Back to where I truly enjoy what I'm doing... the entire process, not just trying to please my readers.

It was several minutes before I realized that this service dog, accompanying the woman in front of me, was laying under the bus seat and had stretched itself out so it extended back into my area.

365-Degrees

A foggy morning greeted me on my walk to Guthrie Clinic for a 9:15 AM appointment. Exiting Guthrie and heading back west at just before 10 AM, some fog still remained, as seen in the photo above. On the right, you get a glimpse of CMOG--the Corning Museum of Glass--and on the left is the Corning YMCA. The river is just to the left (south) of the Y and I decided to walk along the dike.

What you see from this view is two bridges. The walking bridge is closest to me and just behind it is another bridge for vehicles. In the right upper corner of the pictures is part of Corning Inc. headquarters.

On the right, in the front is a corner of the Corning YMCA and behind it a tennis court. Across the street and further back in the photo is CMOG. The tall building in the background is also part of Corning Inc. and faces Pulteney Street.

Here we are back to Centerway Bridge.

I turned completely around -- no, I didn't. I just switched settings on the camera, so it would show me and the rest of the dike behind me.

Moving alongside the Chemung River, I'm getting closer to the Bridge Street bridge.

I've made it to the bridge and am giving you a long shot of the Patterson Bridge. See it in the distance (below the shadow on the hillside). Major renovations going on and as you can see, several spans of the bridge are missing.

This would probably be a good time to remind you to click on any photo to enlarge it and get a more detailed view of the scenery.

That was yesterday and the leaf pile is today. Corning City Public Works Department has been cleaning up their parks. The leaves are coming down fast!

Just past the Bridge Street bridge and you can see the Southside hill again. In the center of this picture and just a bit to the left is a huge (and still growing) pile of concrete debris from the bridge being renovated.

A bright sunny morning and a good time to walk on down the river to get a better view of the Patterson Bridge. This part of the dike has a sidewalk.

Rand McNally announced yesterday that Corning NY is among the finalists in the America’s Best Small Towns competition. Our category... Most Fun! How can it not be fun with all the arts and crafts and history. Plus the Wineglass Marathon ~ coming up in October. See you then?

Another project to improve and beautify Corning NY. When complete, it will still be a “walking bridge”, but will include landscaping.

As I was headed into West End Gallery for a opening reception, I noticed this group and their splendid, shiny Harleys. More PA residents visiting Corning and NYS. Very nice people and I hope to see them again.

Look back at my previous post where my first picture was Terry Oakden painting by the river. Here are some of his paintings in the West End Gallery.

The opening featured paintings by Bridget Bossart van Otterloo (pictured above) and Brian Keeler.

The next day I took homemade brownies to the Benjamin Patterson Inn for the Bake Sale at their annual Whingblinger event.

Just down the street on the same day, a huge, well-attended church yard sale that extended all the way around the far end of the church. Very pleased now with my like new T-Fal pan for $3!

Opening The ARTS, An Artist By The River And Searching The Alley

When I headed out to the gathering area behind our apartment complex's community room, I looked up at the dike and spotted good reason to detour. After photos and conversation, I knew I had to introduce you to Terry Oakden whose artwork can be seen at Corning's West End Gallery on Market Street.

The ARTS* has a new home, still on Market Street, but further west and now on the north side of the street. Huge crowd and the ribbon was certainly representative of art... Staff from Vitrix Hot Glass Studio walked over from next door and strung a glass ribbon for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

India Day 2013

Well, I just had the greatest weekend. Mostly on Saturday, which was India Day here in Corning NY. Each year STICA, the Southern Tier India Cultural Association ~ a non-profit organization devoted to building bridges across cultures ~ sponsors this colorful celebration in Centerway Square.

I took it down some time ago because my FB account got hacked and I had to start everything over (my personal FB page, CNYSBS and the page I had for Step by Step in the Kitchen--that one is not back up yet). Plus I'll be adding extra pictures of Corning that don't make it to the blog.

Featured throughout the event were readings, music, dance, fashion shows and food. The food is one of my favorite parts of the day. Imagine a plateful of Pakoda, Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Makhani, Chole, Matar Paneer, Dal Makhani, Potato Subji, Naan, Rice, Pickle, Raitha and for dessert, Gulab Jamun.

The ladies presented Zumba with an India touch. A subsequent number featured Bollywood music.

Corning's Northside Along The Dike And Back On W. William Street

I walked out back and up to the river, not intending to go anywhere. My walks often start that way.

In this set of photos, I'm on the northside and in the pic above, I'm looking over to the southside of Corning at a small set of houses. Most of Corning's southside housing is to the left and unseen in this pic.

I had to lean against the tower to keep my balance as I moved in as close as possible and looked up.

The Patterson Bridge is undergoing extensive repairs.

Still on the dike alongside the Chemung River, I looked to my right at William Street and noticed these two houses. One pristine and beautifully landscaped. Its neighbor a work in progress.

Now I've left the dike and am walking back parallel to the river, on West William Street. Look close and you'll see that the orange is rust.

Corvettes, Slammin’ Jammin’, Night Shots And More On Corning’s Northside

Corning has experienced cooler temperatures this week. Nighttime lows in the 50s and 60s. Daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. Absolutely refreshing to everyone I've spoken with. It seems that while I was out of town visiting my son in Maryland, the heat was unfriendly and humid.

I took my first lengthy walk in a month because my leg has been bothering me. Loved everything about my little journey, not just the weather.

Just down the street, at the Comfort Inn, a group of Corvette devotees were gathering round their highly buffed red, white and blue cars after a drive to Corning from PA (which isn’t really that far away--I think we’re only about 12 miles from the state line).

And they’re off...

Grace Methodist Episcopal Church at the end of the block. Take note, too, of the old brick sidewalks.

Each year I take photos of this deteriorating 3-car garage. Someone with a sense of humor saw fit to place a wreath in the front of the middle door.

I couldn’t decide which shot was my favorite, so here’s the second, presented to you in “sepia”.

These last four photos were taken three days ago about 7:15 P.M. I walked up and down the dike beside the Chemung River to get them. I didn’t stay out too long because it was cold... really... down in the 60s and I was wearing a short sleeve shirt. Brrr!

U.S. Air Force Memorial

I'm away from Corning on a two week vacation at my son's home in Maryland. Because of a problem with one leg, I haven't walked as much as I would have liked, so there aren't many local pictures to offer you.

Instead, I want to share photos from a recent drive to the Washington D.C. area.

Fourteen years in the making, the United States Air Force Memorial near Arlington, Virginia proudly features three spires extending upward next door to Arlington National Cemetery. Standing at the base of this memorial, you can easily spot the distant Washington Monument and the Pentagon.

In the first photo below, the memorial dedication star lies in the middle of three spires of differing heights, ranging from just over 200 feet to 270 feet. The base of one spire is seen in front of me. The other two are to my left and right. Look closely to see the Washington Monument on the left and the Pentagon just to the right peeking from behind the spire.

The first couple of times you look upward from directly below a spire, you imagine that it is swaying. It's not, but the clouds are moving which causes it to appear to sway. A rather dizzying effect.

In the Army you are a soldier, no matter your rank. In the Navy you are a sailor. In the Air Force you are an airman. The next four photos name airmen who received the Medal of Honor, including names that I recognize ~ Rickenbacker, Mitchell, Lindburgh and Doolittle.

A strange day weather-wise and darker clouds were rolling in. I could see a long line of rain approaching from D.C. and hurried to the car to avoid being soaked.

...And The Rain Keeps Pouring In Corning NY

Today's photos were taken at the end of June and beginning of July, during the week my son was visiting. We'd all hoped for clear weather so lots of short trips and grilling could fill our days. It didn't happen that way. Every day featured some sunshine, but also included rain at some point or other.

If you enlarge and look closely at each picture, you'll see raindrops, even on the leaves of the flowers above.

Too much rain is not good for the benches.

Four trees were cut down in between downpours. Now the homeowner, friends, family and village workers clear up the branches.

I rode back to the State of Maryland with my son on July 6 and am here for a couple of weeks. Would you believe, no rain (except for a couple of 2-3 minute sprinkles) until last night and today it continues, on and on. We've stayed close to home. He's been working an average of eleven hours a day and I've got a leg that's giving me trouble if I use it too much.

A Vacation Glimpse of Maryland and DC

We love to eat out and have many, many choices between Washington D.C. and Baltimore MD ~ Annapolis, Alexandria, Laurel, Columbia, Silver Spring and many others. So far this year we've concentrated on the nearby Waugh Chapel Towne Centre. What a fancy name for a shopping mall! I've noticed that this mall, as well as others in the area, have huge multi-story apartment complexes built right next to them. Out your door and you're in this new mall. We've eaten at Wegmans Market Cafe and Elevation Burger. (I originally said we ate at Red Robin, but realized after a couple of days that we checked out Red Robin and they weren't open yet, so we went next door to Elevation Burger.)

More Vacation Photos From Maryland

Saturday's prediction is for 85-degrees Fahrenheit and low humidity, so we might travel to D.C. Stops may include the U.S. Botanic Garden to see the blooming Titum Arum (corpse flower or stinky plant). Also, I have a gift for Koomo--manager of Chocolate Chocolate in downtown Washington, D.C. and serious collector of shot glasses.

Maryland Vacation

Transportation Center, Wineglass Marathon And More

Corning has a new transportation center on Dennison Parkway, between Wall and Cedar Streets. Various local and area busses will be picking up and dropping off passengers here instead of in the several different locations on Tioga Avenue. Some air conditioning or heat while waiting, public restrooms, lots of comfortable seating, and possibly snack machines will be a welcome change for riders. I don’t know for sure, but am guessing that long distance busses such as Trailways and Greyhound will also use this facility.

Roaming around Corning

More photos taken with my iPad Mini. The first two and the last photo were taken using the Hipstamatic App. Also, on the last photo, I used my iPhoto editing capabilities and changed the coloring to sepia.

The first photo, above, is yet another shot of the Benjamin Patterson Inn on Pulteney Street. I never tire of taking photos there and when my son is next in town, I plan to drag him there to join me (and further instruct me) in taking photos of the inn, the log cabin and other areas of the property with Hipstamatic (which he has on his iPhone).

East Market Street used to continue on past Wall Street. Now it stops there and can be continued on foot or, as in this case, on bicycles, past the Radisson Hotel, the Social Security Offices, the Southeast Steuben County Library and the city skating rink.

There's been a barber shop on Market Street in this spot for a long, long time. Reasonable prices and friendly banter. Like many other establishments on the street, they offer free access to their WiFi. I given you a link that will give you a bit of history on the shop.

The Corning Farmers' Market begins today, in spite of grey skies and rain.

Memorial Day 2013

The lovely couple above have been married for 61 years, since shortly after he returned from the Korean War. I’m sure I heard them telling someone else that they have a child celebrating a 41st wedding anniversary.

I see this vehicle in the parade every year.

Randy drove the Hokey Pokey truck in the parade, as usual. This year, however, Lorraine and their granddaughter walked in front of the truck adding a special touch to the occasion.

Riding the Northside-Southside Bus

The morning started off with a quick downpour and then settled in to “hot and humid”. I walked to Wegmans and boarded the bus when it came back round to start the Southside route.

I left the bus all the way across town so I could get a look at the new Park Avenue location for Corning’s Salvation Army Thrift Shop (aka Salvo). While waiting for the bus’ return, I also perused the goods in the Dollar General store, then sauntered over to the nearby Peaches’n’Cream for a child-sized dish of chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Mmmm, yum!

Walking in the heat didn’t appeal to me, especially when carrying an umbrella (just in case!), a small bag of purchases from Dollar General, my pocketbook and the dish of ice cream.

Oh no, the seats outside the ice cream store were soaked due to the rain. Across the street, however, bordering the cemetery, was a stone (concrete?) wall. I crossed and settled down on a shady portion of the wall.

At this point in time, I realized that my camera batteries had run down. So, I switched to the iPad and its built-in camera.

On the bus headed back to Corning’s Northside, I couldn’t resist taking more photos. Not through the dirty windows beside me, but through the fairly clean panes on the doors.

It’s always windy on the bridges crossing the Chemung River. On this particular day, May 15, I was crossing the bridge on my walk home following a hair cut. No, this is not the style my hair dresser gave me!

The new transportation center is coming together nicely and should be open sometime this summer, I assume. Local busses and others that travel to nearby communities will now assemble here between Wall and Cedar Streets, along Dennison Parkway, to load and unload riders.

Photos for Corning NY Step by Step are taken with two cameras -- a Nikon and a Canon. Today I added a third camera to the set. The first three photos (hair, Senior Center, transportation center) were taken with the camera on my new iPad Mini, a Mother’s Day gift from my children.

The appeal in this shot was the lighting and the flowers losing their color as they make way for the formation of ornamental fruits.

In Wegmans’ parking lot, the driver of a tour bus from Vermont cleans off the windows. Look closely at the trees to see the effects of the gusting winds.

Before setting out this morning, I wanted to get photos of this pontoon getting a Saturday morning shower. Kudos to the truck driver for a job well done, backing that huge boat into the wash bay.

Spring is officially here, not just because the calendar says so, but because the forsythia is blooming! Why are so many spring flowers yellow? Little Joe Tower, blue skies, sunshine, the slightest of breezes -- an all-round beautiful day.

I wonder if even the locals can figure out where this is. I just happened to glance up one day and noticed it. Amazing how a different approach can change a view. Is there a view you love? Try taking a few steps left or right and look again. Or step up on a rock. Or lay down on your back.

Newspaper boxes on the corner are becoming a thing of the past as the Internet becomes more popular.

Daffodils

Everything is greening up quickly.

This is how most tulips look in Corning today, including mine. They will be opening within a day or two. I counted 25 in my tiny garden. Can't wait to see them!

Can you believe that beautiful green grass?! Already needs cutting all over town.

West Market Street. On the left is Three Birds Restaurant. Years ago it used to be a car dealership and an elevator transported cars to the upper floors for display. In the middle is the old McClintock Hotel and bar. Gone now. On the right, the lower floor housed the Shoe Doctor for many years. Upstairs was an apartment. I lived there for several years. Too noisy with a bar next door and several across the street! Otherwise a great place to live.
