Well summer is in full tilt here at Corona Air Ventures. Last weekend was like old home week down by The Bench. It was good to see all the familiar faces and a few new folks too.

Keep a sharp eye out for specials. For example, today we dropped the fuel price down just for this weekend so come by and say, “Hello!”

GA groups ask Congress to support flight-tracking privacy

AOPA, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) sent a letter to Congressional leaders May 13 requesting support for a provision in the House FAA reauthorization bill that would preserve the congressionally enabled Block Aircraft Registration Request (BARR) program. The House and Senate are working out the differences in a long-term FAA bill, and the Senate FAA bill does not include the provision preserving the BARR program.

In 1961… Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr., U.S. Navy, becomes the second man to explore space when he rides his Mercury Freedom 7 capsule, launched by a Redstone missile, to 115 miles above the Earth. It is three weeks since Yuri Gagarin’s first manned space flight.

First In Flight

So who was the first man to fly and where did he do it? Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina of course! Well, maybe not after all.

It turns out that on August 14, 1901 in Fairfield, Connecticut, one Gustave Whitehead managed to taxi an aircraft on wheels, rather than the rail the Wright brothers used, take off, travel about a half mile (compared to the more famous flight of 852 feet) and the land successfully. In fact, by the time the Wright brothers had completed their famous flight, Whitehead had already managed to fly up to a height of 200 feet, travel more than 7 miles and had managed to complete a full turn.

Why haven’t most of us heard about Whitehead and his terrific achievements? Firstly, the Wright brothers were much better marketers and handled the media with an expertise that would make a modern pundit proud; and secondly, Mr Whitehead had the sad misfortune of being a German immigrant trying to make a name for himself at the same time most people were associating Germans with World War I.
