A NOTE FROM SENSEI MIKO

Finding True North

“I know that greatness begins n the minds of the great. I know that what I believe about myself is what I will become – so I believe in the best for myself.” Now to me that’s inspiring. When I teach that is the kind of stuff I want to teach, that is what I want my students to learn. I was reading and watching Guy Kawasaki, one of the geniuses that were in the Apple/Macintosh inner circle and that were responsible for the great ingenuity and success of apple products and the Apple concept and following. He now works as a venture capitalist and he is a terrific speaker. In his talks he makes the point that whenever we begin something (he talks about start ups but it applies to EVERYTHING) the thing to have in mind is NOT the money. It is how what we do will make this better an will provide meaning. I thought that was pretty cool and it something I have always believed myself. If we create something special that we truly believe is good than we win and so does everyone else.

So today I am sitting in the office, its Saturday and the last class just ended and I am reading one of the books upon which our leadership curriculum is based:

West Point Leadership Lessons by Scott Snair. I really like this book, in fact it is one of my favorite books on leadership and you can find it on the dojo website if you go to the leadership section and order it. He talks about advancing career decisions and the conclusion he reaches is that the best thing is to do what we love and what will be of benefit to others and then our career will move ahead. In this context he also talks about taking responsibility and owning our good and bad choices as steps that advance us towards our goals.

I always thought that these were universal principals and indeed these are also the deepest, most important ideals of martial arts. What counts is not the color of the belt but the heart that beats inside. I have seen great black belts that chose to wear white belts (we have one now in the dojo – he just returned from a rather long absence) and I have seen white belts that wore black belts. But when I look at a class I can tell who are the real black belts truly not by the color of their belts but by their level of their commitment, by their outstanding attitude and enthusiasm. Most of my students know that the true black belt is within their heart, not tied around their waists.

This is really one of the best events we have. Open to black and brown belts only we train together from 6 Pm to midnight on Friday nigh, we take a little break and we continue from 6 am to 6 p.m. on saturday. T

Toy Drive

As you may know we had a holiday toy drive where our dojo families brought toys that we then donated t the SD rescue mission. The toys went to families who are homeless and there was such a terrific selection it gave the mothers a chance to browse through them and “shop” so to speak for the best gifts for their children. SO here are some great pics.

Lift up your head…

Lift up our head and look forward, it is a great day to be alive and you better believe it. Over the holidays I saw Jimmy Steward in “Its a good life.” I never really saw it before, kind of old and black and white. But boy is it a good movie, particularly when it seems like the world around us is falling apart!

If like me, you live in or around Coronado, and if like me, you get up in the morning and you are healthy, every part of this delicate and intricate machine we call our body is working in perfect sync, then like me, you want to do two things:

Be thankful and be proud.

Gila, my wife read the book Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I read it through her. But I saw the writer on Oprah and it was a very good interview! She suggested to to do the following every day (and I paraphrase): Think about What you truly want, think of something that made you feel great and change your mantra. The first two are self explanatory, the third was tough for me to get. But she explained: we all tend to say things to ourselves that are not only counter productive but out right disastrous: I cant I shouldn’t I should have, why didn’t I etc…so change your mantra. You deserve what you have and you deserve to enjoy it so tell yourself this every day (well, that’s one example).

In my leadership class at the dojo we talk about this a lot! Create a mantra that makes you feel good, that makes you want to get up ad go and to do good things. Things that are good for you and are good for others. Then relax and enjoy the journey!
