Seagate technologies has announced that they will be stopping the production of 2.5″ 7200rpm magnetic hard drives by the end of the year. As the production of SSD drives increases the prices will continue to fall which will lead to the market for magnetic drives to decrease. The SSD drives are faster and more rugged when compared to the older magnetic drives and with the prices dropping the sales numbers will be increasing to replace the lost revenue.

Currently Seagate does not produce consumer SSD drives but late last year they signed a contract with Densbits to co-develop consumer and enterprise class SSD drives. It will be a while before 7200rpm drives from Seagate disappear entirely because there is a large number of drives in the channel.

The second large player in the laptop drive market is Western Digital, they have not announced any future plans for 2.5 inch drive production.

Over the past few days the Evernote web site was hacked and user data was taken. This data consisted of user names, encrypted passwords, email addresses. At this time they do not believe any customer data has been compromised. If you use the Evernote service you will need to reset your passwords online and on any iOS or Android devices that connect to the service. There are full reset instructions posted in your account on the service. Log into your account and follow the directions to reset your main account first then update your devices with the new information.

Also as a word of warning if you use the same password on other web sites they should be changed too. This is exactly why it is not a good security practice to use the same password on several sites. Always use a strong password that is a mix of upper and lower case letters with number and punctuation symbols included. Be sure to change your password as soon as possible and let any users that you know to do the same, the faster you change your information the less time the hackers have to use it.

Here is a link to the Evernote blog post regarding this issue – blog.evernote.com

BleepingComputer.com has reported that the ComboFix distribution that was being hosted on their site was found to contain a file infected with the Sality virus. The compromised version was found yesterday and traced to the download package updated at 2am on Jan 29th. Other sites have mirrored the infected files so if you have downloaded and used ComboFix within the past 24hours then your system may be infected with Sality. If you already had your copy of ComboFix prior to yesterdays update then your files are clean and you can continue to use it without worrying.

Most Anti-Virus program programs will catch Sality because it is fairly old. But keep in mind not all users keep antivirus programs up to date and if you are needing to run ComboFix then chances are that the system is already compromised by some virus and the anti-virus program may already be disabled.

If you feel your system could have been infected it is suggested that you run a full scan with the following tools:
Eset online scanner
Or download and burn a copy of
Kasperski rescue disk

If these sites are being blocked then you are most likely already infected, use a clean computer and download the SalityKiller from Kasperski or the AVG Sality removal tool after disconneecting your system from your network on internet connection.

The Sality virus can be spread via network shares and infected files. If you are on a network you will need to scan the other systems that are connected in case the virus has already spread thru the network shares.

Additional details are available at the BleepingComputer.com web site.

Replacing a non-functioning keyboard on a laptop is very easy to do. We have had a few Dell D620 and D830 laptops come into our shop with broken or sticky keyboards that needed to be replaced. The process takes less than 3 minutes to do and only takes a small Philips screwdriver to complete.

If you have any of the following Dell Latitude models then this short guide will show you how to replace the keyboard:

D620

D630

D820

D830

or the Precision M65

The keyboard assembly in the above Dell models also contain the eraser point or track point controller. If you have missing key tops, your keyboard does not type some of the characters, types the wrong characters or the track point moves by itself then replacing the keyboard will solve the problem. It is just held in with 3 screws and a plastic bezel along the top.

Dell UC172 Keyboard

The part number for the keyboard unit is UC172 Keyboard which is available from many places on the internet including Amazon.com. The same part number is used on all of the Dell laptops listed above.

Here is our YouTube video showing the replacement process on the Dell Latitude D620, the other models listed above follow the same procedure.

Now you see them, Now you don’t! All Android devices come with apps built in that you will never use, this is called bloatware. They just take up screen space but can not be deleted because they are in the OS. Well is you are running a Samsung device with Android 4.XX (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher then you have the option of hiding the apps icon so it does not take up space on your screen. This function is also useful if you have apps that you do not want other people getting into such as banking apps, PayPal etc. The apps will not be uninstalled just hidden from view. This is not a secure way to hide them just out of site.

To hide your apps just go into the apps screen that shows the ones to hide and tab the menu button. When your menu pops up press the hide applications link. As seen here.

Now you will have a screen showing the apps with a check box on the top right of each app. Tap the check box for each app that you want to hide and then tap the save button on the top right.

Now those apps will not show in your apps screen. To un-hide them go back to the apps page and again hit the menu button. When the menu comes up just scroll down one item below the screen and you will see the show hidden applications tab. Tap it and you will have a screen with all of your hidden apps, tap the select box on any that you want to unhide and tap the “done” button. They will be back where they were.

This new function can be very handy to either cleanup your app screens or to keep prying eyes out of things that they should not be getting into.

This function works on Samsung phones and tablets running Android 4.0 and higher.

Here is a video showing how to hide and unhide the apps.

Seidio has a solution, the SSGS3
extended battery pack. This 3500mAh battery pack will almost double your battery life over the OEM 2100mAh battery that comes with the S3.

I have been using this battery pack for several weeks and it does make a big difference in the daily battery availability. When I used the standard 2100mAh battery that comes with the Samsung Galaxy S3 I would run out of battery charge about mid afternoon with average web and cell phone use. With the extended battery pack installed I have about 30-40% battery charge left at the end of the day with the same amount of usage.

The battery comes with a replacement battery cover too since this pack is almost twice as thick. Adding the extended pack does add a little weight to the phone but it actually feels more comfortable to hold.

Side view of Galaxy S3 with extended battery installed.

As with any other extended battery pack you will need to charge it 2-3 hours past the time that the phone shows a full charge. Also the battery pack will not obtain a full charge until after a few charge cycles so you will need to use it a few days before you will have the full capacity available.

So you got an Amazon Kindle Fire HD but some of the web sites you want to view do not work right because it is missing a flash player. No Youtube, no embedded videos on web pages etc. You go to the Amazon app store and look for Adobe flash player but its not there. What do you do now? We will show you how to download and install Adobe flash player so you can have the full web experience.

Keep in mind that this is a hack because Adobe no longer supports Flash on android devices.

You will need to enable 3rd party applications on the device since you will be loading the applications from other sources outside of the Amazon app store. To do this just pull down the menu bar at the top of your Kindle and click the “More” button on the top right side. Now scroll down until you see the “Device” section and click it. Now look for the option that says “Allow installation of applications” from unknown sources and set it to “ON”. You can reset this option once the applications are installed.

Now go to the app store on your Kindle Fire HD and install the ES file explorer app. If you can not locate the ES file manager in the app store then you can download ES file explorer from this link: http://tinyurl.com/btkbvn6

Now open your web browser on the Kindle Fire HD and enter the TinyURl link below. We have shortened the links to make it easier to enter them on your Kindle.

This first link is for the Dolphin browser. This is needed because the built in Silk browser does not support Flash at all.http://tinyurl.com/9ojctcx
The file will download to the download folder on your Kindle. Once this is complete then you can download the Adobe flash player. It is available from this link, http://tinyurl.com/c5f69z2

After both files are downloaded open the ES file explorer app and tap the download folder to locate the above two files. tap on the Dolphin file first and install it then tap the Flash player file to install it. Under your Apps tab you will see the new Dolphin browser, use it anytime you need flash. The original Silk browser is still installed if you want to use it but the Dolphin browser has many more features so give it a try and let us know if you have any questions.

Again try your Dolphin browser on flash sites to check the operation.

Check out our article showing how to enable wireless printing on Android devices including the Kindle Fire HD - Adding wireless printing to Android devices.
