I remembered when Elvis died. I was tucked-up in bed and listening to Radio Luxembourg. I hid the radio under my pillow to mute and soften the sound.

Last night I stayed awake until 2am, albeit that a few hours before we knew that Michael Jackson had died. My quest for knowledge was fed by updates from Twitter comments, Sky News, Fox News, BBC News and various Internet sites. In addition, I was talking and expressing my grief with some Facebook friends.
Just look at the Network peaks from the last few hours:

MJ Internet Network Peaks when he died.

Back to MJ.

If we consider what he achieved, he did bring the world together. Technology is just a facilitator.
Michael Jackson was a gentle, inspiring and affectionate individual.
He also worked on the USA for Africa Project / Live Aid.

The words of his songs will echo in our hearts, just like Marvin Gaye’s, ‘Brother, Brother, Brother, what’s going on’!

A few months back the US voted Obama on the change ticket.
Right now, around the world, there is still heavy corruption inequality and hunger. Sure, content such as Slumbdog millionaire can highlight issues, but are they enough to prompt us to take action to make a difference to others!?

As MJ suggested what we need to do is look at ourselves in the mirror and make that change, a change for good and harmonisation.

We have the technology all we need is the continued will, i.e: A desire to make this world a better place.

In an exciting new media development, the iPhone now has a feature that allows you to set the bath before you step through the door. The “Bath-o-matic” application can get the tub filled complete with bubbles and a specific temperature with the touch of a finger.

With the combination of £4,000 hi-tech set of taps the iPhone controls will run you the perfect soak. It works with the various settings that are selected on the iPhone, sending the various signals to a set of Unique Automatic Bathomatic range taps that adjusts the temperature, water level and even apply soak bubbles to your perfect bath.
The control software is available free of charge and can be downloaded from the Apple Application Stores. This application will be launched at the ISE Exhibition in Amsterdam 3-5 February 2010.

Unique Automation has also informed users to expect the Bathovision television application!

Is Email Slowly Becoming Extinct?

With social networks such as twitter and facebook on the rise, it is evident that email is no longer virtually the most effective means of communication. With junk mail and cluttered inboxes, using email as a main virtual means of communication is not very popular as it once was.

It has been said that email is slowly on the way out and many people now agree that the direct mail function of twitter and facebook is a far better mode of communication and is more effective, and it is more likely that people will respond to a direct message on twitter than to every email received.

Let’s take a look on the advantages of both methods of communication:

Advantages of Social Networking

Much faster and easier to update link and promote information or any sort both on wireless systems.

With one click your feed generated is communicated through all contacts, and social feed updates can be linked to display on relating blog sites for easy access.

You have the option of distributing to thousands of people through Twitter’s main website.

Reaches more people via mobile phone, even if they’re on vacation.

A history of your updates is stored conveniently on your profile.

The subscriber list is stored and managed for you on your account.

Very interactive, extensible messaging platform with open APIs.

Many other compatible applications being developed such as (Twitterific, Summize, Twhirl, etc.).

Advantages of E-mail

E-mail is practically universal.

Lets you integrate HTML links in the format you want, and even images into your “newsletter”.

Far more formatting options are available.

It allows for a more “personalized” communication with customers or friends.

While both Social Networks and Emails certainly have very important place in private life and in business, the question remains does Social networks have enough flexibility or scope to replace email. On the Internet, people tend to scan things very quickly, never remaining on one page for more then 20 or 30 seconds unless something really catches their interest. Therefore, the only way to get your message quickly across is with a short and simple one-line message notifying them that there’s something new that they may be interested in, such as a new blog entry, product, or event. Social Networking accomplishes this perfectly, by being short precise and eye catching with the use of the different applications available to each site, such as a bubble tweet!

With the comparisons made above it is evident that both Social networks and Email have their separate specific and important place in the world of info-share. Email is still far more for detailed sharing while networks such as twitter and facebook are the tools of choice to bring attention or alert breaking news, a more instant interest. Taking everything into consideration, I personally think it’s safe to say that neither will be replacing the other any time soon.

Whilst browsing casually. Is that the same as wasting time by channel surfing on TV? I don’t think so as its far more dynamic. I came across a great example of the use of e-Learning and social networking, i.e: Xlingo

The experience of the social web has demonstrated the potential for citizens to engage, create and share knowledge. An interesting example is language networks where people learn from each other in informal, user negotiated ways.

E-learning has the potential to encourage the self-propelled skills of exploration, negotiation, collaboration, and autonomous enquiry. Online digital tools, such as multimedia, have been shown as powerful ways to engage students who are disadvantaged in traditional education. It is also essential that as responsible society we are more sensitive to the requirements of disability and accessibility, or what I prefer to say helping differently abled people. Practically this means access to improved interfaces.

Firstly I must say its great to be back!

Living in such a media advanced world, media/technology is always evolving, upgrading and being reinvented. I must say I am a big fan of all three. Discovering new ways to reinvent media is always so mind blowing! It is thrilling to see how inventors bend and push the rules and boundaries of technology. Just when you think there is absolutely no way of them making a particular item any better than it already is ….voilà! an upgrade is born.

Firstly, take for example, the USB Re-chargeable cell. I’ve not actually tried it myself but it is selling for approx £10.99.

Its associated online advertisement suggests that, ‘This NiMH AA cell can be used like a normal battery and can be recharged simply by plugging into a USB port.’

Well while scrolling through other new interesting gadgets of 2009, i recently found an upgrade to the X-box 360 which, bare in mind recently came out. It takes the idea of a Wii console but without the restrictions of the controls! How is this done ? Well the Project Natal, as it is called includes a camera, a motion sensor and a microphone, which are elements that will allow users to play by using their bodies and voices to control the Xbox 360. Interesting, no controls …no wires….no problem!

Think of the possibilities with technology like this.

Check it out!

It was good to find some great public domain sites that focus on sharing best practice.
Take for example: http://www.instructionaldesign.org/public_domain.html

and

http://www.elearninglearning.com

The latter is a great place for consolidated e-Learning blogs.

Interestingly, I noted recently from: Marc J. Rosenberg’s, ‘Building Successful Online Learning in your Organisation’:
that according to him there are 2 types of e-Learning portals: Ones that you can buy and ones that you build.

Marc further suggests that an organisation needs to determine if it is interested in a portal’s functionalty, but not the content that may come with each. If this is the case he suggests that the organisation works with the e-Learning portal supplier to separate the two.
Focus must also be kept on both easy maintenance and upgradable

It is certainly interesting that so many 'brand experts' are emerging. Some of the latter appear to be developing a cottage industry in terms of referring each other. Good luck to them and maybe there is a market to advise people on using such tools.

It is certainly interesting that so many ‘brand experts’ are emerging. Some of the latter appear to be developing a cottage industry in terms of referring each other. Good luck to them and maybe there is a market to advise people on using such tools.

I would be disturbed if conversations with such advisor’s were talking about what you can do with social tools rather than how you can use them with real evidence of impact on clients.

Anyway, here’s a list of best practice when dealing with Social Media tools.

When dealing with people online, engage in true conversations, albeit that tools such as Twitter can be linked to RSS.

Good to keep your updates ’sweet’ and relevant to the network of people who are following you or even keen on the same subject areas, for example, if your network is focused on sports, you can always extend the conversation on related subjects such as nutrition.

Celebrate the successes of others. From a client perspective, you could, ‘big them up’! There is some mileage in when you champion for others, they might champion for you. NB This should not be done in a sycophantic way!

Engage and Interact. e,g: follow-up business conversations.

Don’t Broadcast. Instead, communicate related business stories and news.

Participating consistently builds a stronger on-line reputation for your company and boosts your presence within social media circles.

Sometimes I wonder who’s really writing celebrity blogs! Is it their PR agencies or ghost writers. It is worthwhile reconsidering dialogue with these people!

Consider your reputation. Consider what you are about to enter into Internet history before you respond to posts from other sites.

Understand what I call web dynamics, i.e: understand the behaviour of respondents on your various networks, for example, when are people most on-line and what subject areas do you get the most response from.

Communication is key, for example, audio and video blogging is great - However, poor production is easily off putting. In other words, sometimes short and smart communications is better. It is worth considering something called a ‘drip strategy’ ,i.e: planning the release of your knowledge.

There you go, lots of advice and it was all for free!

I wrote about this video recently at my personal blog. In an article called the ‘true value of twitter’.

Since watching the video, I’ve changed who I follow and what I choose to share.
Not because the video is cynical about people who love to ‘life stream’ but because the value of twitter is lost amongst business cynics.
I love the line from the video:

Question: Who are they talking to?
Answer: Noone and everyone!

Clearly, there is a benefit to sharing experiences as it is both dynamic and direct.
The potential of mind-casting from a streaming of relevant content perspective far outweighs trying to search or even research for the latest information.

Watch and enjoy it again! In other words this is worth re-tweeting!
