(14 Feb,2011 ) Couples in Thailand are marking Valentine's Day by attempting to break the Guinness world record for the longest continuous kiss. The current record stands at 32 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds, set in Germany in 2009.
Kicking off at dawn on Sunday, each couple was given a space of 1 square meter in which they have to spend the time kissing. They're only allowed to leave the area for bathroom breaks. If the lovebirds' lips part - even for a moment - they'll be disqualified. They're also not allowed to sit or sleep. The winning couple will be rewarded with a diamond ring and a cash prize.

Millions of television screens reverted to black and white for a few minutes Sunday night as the 53rd annual Grammy Awards turned off the color for Bruno Mars

It was a section of the show that emphasized the connections current popular music has to the past, on a night with several music legends are teamed with new stars, including Barbra Streisand, Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan.

Janelle Monae followed with a futuristic soul performance of her song "Cold War," which brought the Staples Center crowd to their feet for a long standing ovation.
Rihanna made a triumphant return to the Grammys, two years after she canceled her performance hours after she was beaten by then-boyfriend Chris Brown.

Eminen was later handed a Grammy for best rap album for "Recovery," the best selling CD of 2010.
Lady Antebellum took home five Grammys, including for song of the year, record of the year and best country album for "Need You Now." The group also was given two Grammys in the pre-telecast show.

Jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding beat out Drake and Justin Bieber to win the best new artist award.

The show opened with a "get-well card" to Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, who is recovering from an undisclosed illness.

Yolanda Adams, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride and best new artist nominee Florence Welch sang a soulful montage of Franklin's hits, including "A Natural Woman," "Ain't No Way," "Knock On Your Door," "Think," "Baby I Love You" and "Respect."

(14 Feb,2011) Cairo: Egypt's military rulers called for an end to strikes and protests on Monday as thousands of state employees, from ambulance drivers to police and transport workers, demonstrated to demand better pay and conditions.

The growing wave of labour unrest has been unleashed by the democracy uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

The statement by the ruling military council that took power from Mubarak appeared to be a final warning to protest organisers in labour and professional unions before the army intervenes and imposes an outright ban on gatherings, strikes and sit-ins.

In Cairo's Giza district, hundreds of ambulance drivers demonstrated to demand better pay and permanent jobs.

The statement also warned that strikes and protests hurt the country's security and economy and gave a chance to what it called "irresponsible parties" to commit "illegal acts." It did not elaborate.

Some small scuffles broke out as soldiers attempted to clear all the remaining demonstrators from Cairo's Tahrir Square on Monday, the giant traffic circle that was turned into a protest camp headquarters for the 18-day revolt.

The few dozen remaining protesters say they won't leave until all those detained during the revolt are released.

Thailand Cambodia disagree on solution

The standoff between Thailand and Cambodia over border clashes has entered the 14th day, with no resolution in sight. Both sides claim territory adjacent to the ancient Preah Vihear temple.
Cambodia has asked the UN Security Council for immediate intervention. Prime Minister Hun Sen says the situation continues to deteriorate and the two sides are no longer listening to each other. He warns the fighting poses a threat to regional stability.
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is insisting on bilateral solutions. He says Cambodia is wrong to call on the UN Security Council and third countries to intervene.
Abhisit has expressed confidence Thailand can make a strong case at the closed-door Security Council meeting in New York to show that Phnom Penh had sparked the standoff over the disputed territory.
Abhisit Vejjajiva, Thai Prime Minister, said, "Thai Foreign Minister Kasi Piromya will clarify the stances of Thailand to the UN Security Council on the border clashes. We hope to solve it through a bilateral solution, though Cambodia has decided to boycott the meeting of Thai-Cambodian Boundary Commission. But the bilateral mechanism has not lost its role."

Arrest Warrant for ex-President Musharraf over benazir killing

(12 Feb 2011) A court in Pakistan issued an arrest warrant Saturday for former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali said on the Anti Terrorist Court in Rawalpindi issued the warrant.
Prosecutors claim that an investigation shows Musharraf was responsible for not providing adequate protection for Bhutto and has not responded to a prosecutor's request to answer questions -- hence the court-ordered arrest warrant.
Bhutto, who spent many years in exile, was assassinated in 2007 as she campaigned against Musharraf for the presidency.
Some have accused Musharraf of being involved in the assassination, but Musharraf denies any involvement. Late last year, Pakistani authorities arrested two police officials in the case.
A United Nations panel looking into Bhutto's assassination concluded that Pakistan's military-led former government failed to adequately protect her and that intelligence agencies hindered the subsequent investigation.
The panel's scathing report in April 2010 said the suicide bombing that killed Bhutto "could have been prevented" and that police deliberately failed to pursue an effective investigation into the killings. But Musharraf's government has said Bhutto had been afforded adequate protection.

Musharraf went into self-imposed exile in London after resigning in 2008.

Musharraf decided to start a political party last year and make a comeback. He has said he wants to return for a presidential run in 2013 because he sees suffering in Pakistan and doesn't see a political party offering a solution.

(11 Feb,2011) Demonstrations that began with quiet determination on the internet more than three weeks ago erupted into riotous jubilation Friday evening, moments after it was announced that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was stepping aside.
Protesters swarmed army tanks that had been deployed to keep order, banged drums, blew whistles and frantically waved Egyptian flags in celebration. They danced in circles and chanted. Processions of cars made their way down Cairo streets, drivers honking horns and waving flags.
Fireworks erupted outside the presidential palace. Some men and women dropped to their knees and began to pray.
"Freedom!" crowds chanted outside the white carved walls of the presidential palace.

"God is great!" they shouted in Tahrir Square.
"Congratulations Egypt the criminal has left the palace," said one of the movement's key activists, Wael Ghonim, in a Twitter post.
"They convinced us for 30 years that Egypt had died, that there was no more Egypt," he said in an interview with CNN, referring to the nearly 30 years of autocratic rule under Mubarak. "We were all looking for Egypt and thank God we found her today."

After thirty years in power, Mubarak announced more than a week ago he would not participate in the upcoming presidential election.

54 year Old man sex with 13 year teen girl

(10 Feb)54-year-old Fitchburg man is accused of crossing several state lines to sexually assault a 13-year-old girl. Police said the way the man met and pursued the teen should serve as a warning to parents.

Jeff Phillips allegedly met the 13-year-old Detroit girl while they played an online video game called "Runescape." While role playing in the game, the two entered a cyber marriage, but investigators said Phillips maneuvered for real-life contact.

"This guy actually came from Massachusetts to the state of Michigan and had sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl on three occasions," said Sheriff Benny Napoleon.

The sex allegedly happened in Phillips' van, at a motel and in the girl's own home. He brought her presents, including her own cell phone, so they could secretly text.

"The things that this guy said to this young lady are just unspeakable," said Napoleon.

The secret unraveled when her mom caught her using the cell phone at 2 a.m.

"She seen her throw her hand. So, she walked over and seen that there was a cell phone there," said Ray Johnson, of the Sheriff's Internet crimes unit.

Police raided Phillips' Fitchburg home, but arrested him in upstate New York, where he was visiting his father.

Phillips is now in jail. That 13-year-old girl is now in counseling.

Hosni Mubarak not leaving Egypt

"Leave! Leave!" chanted thousands who had gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square in anticipation that a televised speech would be the moment their demands for an end to Mubarak's 30 years of authoritarian, one-man rule were met.

Instead, the 82-year-old former general portrayed himself as a patriot overseeing an orderly transition until elections in September.

He praised the young people who have stunned the Arab world with unprecedented demonstrations, offering constitutional change and a bigger role for Omar Suleiman, the vice president.

Pakistan Mardan Military camp sucide attack

(10 Feb Mardan,Pakistan): A suicide attack at Punjab Regiment Centre in Cantt area of Mardan killed 23 recruits and injured several others on Thursday morning.

A bomber blew up his explosives when the soldiers were drilling in the ground of the military training facility.

The attack took place in the town of Mardan which is located some 60km (37 miles) north of Peshawar.

The military said 6kg of explosive were used in the explosion.

Media is not being allowed to reach the heavily protected military facility for coverage of the incident.

"It was a suicide attack. The teenager bomber was on foot and was wearing a school uniform," eyewitnesses said.

The forces have cordoned off the area and the military has taken the charge of rescue operation in its hand. Civilian rescue agencies were not allowed entry in the heavily protected military facility.

Combined Military Hospital Mardan has declared emergency as the area has been sealed after the blast.

The families of children studying in schools located in the Cantt area are disturbed as they were not allowed entry in the area.

(10 Feb 2011 Juba) A South Sudanese minister, has been shot dead in his office , in the future country's capital Juba.

Jimmy Lemi,the minister for rural development, was allegedly shot by his brother in law, in an attack that also killed a guard. Interior Minister, Gier Chou-ang A-loung said he didnt believe the crime was politically motivated.

Lemi, was the former member of the National Congress Party, which dominates the North. He defected, to the South's Sudan People's Liberation Movement, ahead of elections, in April last year.

The incident comes only days after referendum results confirmed that Southern Sudan would become the world's newest independent state on 9 July.

Nearly 99% of southerners voted for secession in last month's poll. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has said he will accept the outcome.

Officials in the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) believe the motive for Wednesday's shooting was personal rather than political.

(SYDNEY 9 Feb): Australian lawmakers paid tribute to the tens of thousands of citizens whose lives have been rocked by floods, fires and cyclones, as authorities reined in a major blaze, which gutted 68 homes.

Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard choked back tears as she recounted the nation's horror summer, marked by huge floods that killed 35 people in Queensland state, top-strength Cyclone Yasi and wildfires still raging on the west coast.

Fire crews on Tuesday managed to contain the inferno, which destroyed at least 68 homes and damaged 32 more as it tore through heavily wooded areas on the southern outskirts of Perth, Australia's fourth-largest city.

The wildfires came just days after Cyclone Yasi ripped into Australia's northeast coast, wiping out sugar and banana crops and devastating hundreds of homes in Queensland state, which is still reeling from record floods.
Gillard's voice trembled as she recounted the difficulties Australia faced during the summer, a time she said would "always be remembered for the force and scale of the natural disasters the nation has endured."

Prime minister said, opening the first session of parliament for 2011.

"Australia has watched in horror as day after day a new chapter in natural disaster history has been written."

Gillard wept as she presented a flag to the parliament given to her by army rescue workers who found it at Murphy's Creek, epicentre of an "inland tsunami so powerful it swept away lives and shattered communities."

Many MPs wiped away tears as she recalled the story of Jordan Rice, 13, who urged rescuers to save his younger brother first as he was swept to his death, and a pregnant woman whose baby was wrenched from her arms just seconds before help arrived.She also thanked the volunteer army of thousands who turned out to help strangers clean out their homes and the more than Aus$200 million raised through public donations.

"We will always remember the days of despair and the days of courage we've lived through together this summer," she said.

Wildfires that left hundreds of people homeless were still burning on the west coast and Gillard said flooding continued to menace Victoria and New South Wales, while nine people remained missing in the Queensland floods.

Brisbane, brought to a standstill by floods that swamped tens of thousands of homes, on Tuesday put the cost of recovery at $440 million, with roads, marinas and other infrastructure washed away.

Sri lanka flooding disaster

Feb 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has roughly estimated that the recent round of floods have caused a damage worth of 50 billion rupees to the economy while affecting over 1.2 million people of 18 districts.

Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera says that thousands of acres of cultivations, around 450 small and big irrigation schemes, at least 75,000 cattle and many thousands of poultry and other animals were destroyed in floods.

The UN agencies say the second wave of floods is worse than the previous round and has led to widespread crop losses causing the almost total loss of the investments towards the Maha season cultivation.

According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), paddy and other field crops planted in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts have completely been lost.

Meanwhile, irrigation officials say rebuilding the damaged reservoirs and canals will cost about five billion rupees.

The government has planned to employ the low income group people in the affected communities in rehabilitation work at 500 rupees per day for four weeks to assist them to rebuild their lives.

California wrong way accident

The dramatic high-speed crash of an 83-year-old wrong-way driver, which caused a four-car pileup on a California freeway, was captured on a cell phone camera.

After several seconds, the pickup truck crashes when it hit the concrete abutment of the overpass at Las Pulgas Road in Oceanside, California.

Attack on Indonesian minority Ahmadiyya Muslims home

Indonesia's president ordered an investigation into an attack on members of a minority Muslim sect after a gruesome video emerged of a mob beating several victims to death with machetes, sticks and rocks.

More than 1,000 Muslim protesters have stormed a courthouse and burned two churches in central Java, Indonesia.

The attacks in Temanggung happened after a Christian man was sentenced to five years in jail for distributing leaflets deemed insulting to Islam.

Indonesian police said the crowd considered the sentence too lenient and were demanding the death penalty.

The incident came two days after Muslim villagers in western Java killed three members of a minority Islamic sect.
police told that the angry crowd began attacking the court building in Temanggung after the verdict was read out.
