"HAGERSTOWN — The case had been in a jury’s hands for about two hours Monday afternoon when a Roxbury Correctional Institution inmate decided to agree to enter a plea in Washington County Circuit Court to one of three counts of second-degree assault on a Division of Correction employee.

Kevin Tyrone Latham, 37, entered an Alford plea to the one count and was sentenced to one year in prison consecutive to the Baltimore City Circuit Court sentence he is serving for second-degree murder, according to court records. In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt, but acknowledges the state has sufficient evidence to gain a conviction." [read more]

"Lonnie 'Meechie' Rowland spent his last Father's Day with his son and infant daughter, then went home to get ready for his job working overnight as an officer at a North Philadelphia correctional facility.

'Meechie didn't have no enemies. Meechie didn't do nothing but work,' said his 86-year-old grandmother, Gertrude Rowland.

Around 10 p.m., a man fatally shot Lonnie Rowland, 37, in the head and chest in the living room of Gertrude Rowland's North Philadelphia house, in the 2400 block of West Elkhart Street. Lonnie Rowland lived there with other family members."

A senior justice official said he didn't know if there was a connection between the two incidents, which happened about 30 minutes apart at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility late Tuesday."

Amanda Bevar was found guilty in April of first-degree robbery, assault with intent to inflict serious injury, escape and assault while participating in a felony. She was sentenced Monday."

We are told hundreds of inmates are on a hunger and work strike.

Three sources inside the prison confirm the strike and say inmates are protesting poor medical treatment.

This includes withheld medications, prolonged waits to see doctors and poor medical facility conditions.

A Correctional Officer Union website shows La Tuna has been on lockdown since Monday after a staff member was assaulted. We are also told a Lieutenant officer was attacked as well."

"Nearly three years have passed since inmate Curtis Michael Allgier allegedly killed a prison officer at a Salt Lake City medical clinic, but the capital murder case is far from being ready for trial, defense attorneys told a 3rd District Court judge on Monday.

Judge Paul Maughan noted that Corrections Officer Stephen Anderson, 60, was killed -- shot with his own gun after he unshackled Allgier for an MRI scan -- on June 25, 2007.

'I don't want to take another three years until we go to trial,' the judge told Allgier's defense team. 'I want you to move this as fast and speedily as you can.'"

"TAUNTON, Mass. — A Fall River man was sentenced in Taunton Superior Court to 19 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to a manslaughter charge in the February 2007 fatal stabbing of Jason Glover, 28, on Dwelly Street in Fall River. He will also serve 10 years’ probation.

Christopher Fisher, 24, will spend the next 23 years in prison because his sentence will not begin until he completes sentences for two assaults on correctional officers.

In July 2009, Fisher was sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of assaulting a correctional officer. In January 2010, he was convicted in Norfolk County of again assaulting a corrections officer and ordered to serve an additional 2 to 2½ years on completion of the earlier sentence.

"THE police and prison officers yesterday foiled an escape bid by rioting inmates at the high-security Horizon Adult Remand Centre in Kingston, but 21 inmates were injured in the incident.

Police with riot gear and Jamaica Defence Force soldiers had to be called in to help restore calm at the prison.

In the meantime, Major Richard Reese, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of National Security, last night denied a radio report that two inmates were shot and killed at the facility during the disturbance.

"...There was a small incident but I have no reports of anyone being killed," Reese told the Observer.

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the police's information arm, meanwhile, said there may have been shooting at the prison, but said they could not confirm any deaths.

"The inmates tried to dig off the locks to their cells but they were unsuccessful and calm has been restored," an officer at the CCN said.

However, last night, a security ministry official said that 21 inmates were injured. Some had cracked skulls and others received cuts, the official said,

Sources told the Observer that the prisoners became boisterous because of a lack of water at the facility. The situation, the source said, worsened when warders disallowed visitors from taking bottled water to their relatives and friends inside the prison.

The action sparked a protest from some of the women who claimed that the inmates were being victimised and their constitutional rights were being violated.

"Five day now them can't get no drinking water and them nah bathe; dem a human being," said one of the women. "Is pure diarrhoea inside there now," the woman alleged.

The Department of Correctional Services, however, refuted the claim and said two truckloads of water were delivered to the institution.

Yesterday, an officer on the scene told the Observer that the protest was organised by a woman who had ties to an inmate who is being housed among several other high-risk prisoners."
