The NPD Group surveyed businesses with less than 1,000 employees about their intent to purchase tablets over the next 12 months. The study found that 90% of companies plan to spend the same amount or more on tablets this year, an average investment of $21,000.

Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD enthuses – “Businesses of all sizes appear to be determined to capitalise on the tablet phenomenon”.

Goodyoga studio in Brooklyn, New York have implemented iPads into their studio to replace the front counter system. Flannery Foster, Co-owner of Brooklyn’s goodyoga studio enthuses – “The iPad is awesome”. The yoga studio also serves as a combined bed and breakfast family run business.

Flannery Foster elaborates - ”When people walk in the door, we hand them the iPad, and they sit on the coach – it’s a lot more casual, and we can bring them tea or water.”

Implementing the iPad has increased client satisfaction and business efficiency. Goodyoga sync their client information automatically, saving considerable amounts of time for the team.

Foster elaborates further – “People have fun with it, and we have a lot of people who’ve never used an iPad before. Sometimes they’re apprehensive, but most people have a lot of fun using it, and they love being able to sign with their finger when they pay with Square.”

Tenoverten 

Tenoverten, a nail salon in New York offers iPads at every nail station. Co-owner Nadine Ferber enthuses – “Customers love the iPads – some people have never used one before and are just thrilled to be able to without making a commitment to buying on. ”

More than half of the cliental use the iPads during their manicure or pedicure service. Nadine says,  ”It’s one of the most differentiating things about our business as we are the only nail salon in the world that has an iPad at every manicure salon.”

Butter Lane in New York has implemented the iPad as a main tool in their long-term social media strategy. They have affixed an iPad to their wall in an attempt to encourage people to ‘like’ and follow the shop on Facebook and Twitter. The cupcakery offers free frosting shots as incentives to those who do follow them on their social Media.

Baugh enthuse – “WE find that people use it to get more information about our baking classes and sometimes register for them.” She confirms the device has helped them gained new customers.

“The iPad allows guests to control the flow and timing of their experience”, says Paul Motenko, co -founder of Stacked. Guests can order a drink and appetizer and then entrees and deserts, when they are ready – or their whole meal at once to move things along faster”.

Stacked have received an instant ROI, due to the decreasing demand of waitresses. Customers can even pay their bill directly via the iPad, so they don’t have to wait for the waiter/ess. Credit card information is encrypted at the table enabling a secure system.

4Food have implemented 6 iPads in their restaurant available for customers to order from and browse the web. Waiters/waitresses also utilize the devices to take orders from customers, so they don’t have to que.

620 Jones 

620 Jones , a San Francisco bar have implemented a new POS system utilising iOS Devices – iPod touches and iPads to take orders, manage stock and improve customer satisfaction.

Jordan Langer says, “We take all our orders with an iPod, and the staff runs credit cards with iPads” and elaborates further his team are “very heavily entwined in developing the app”.

Staff take orders with an iPod touch and the iPad handles the merchant processing.

“People love it … they absolutely love it,” Langer enthuses. “Inventory’s a lot easier to manage, the development is a lot easier, the interaction with the customers is a lot easier.”

BA believe the iPad will enable them to give their passengers a “truly bespoke, personalised service”. Bill Francis, British Airways’ head of inflight customer experience enthuses:

“The iPad is already allowing us to offer a more personalised onboard service, but the possibilities for future development are endless. We’re receiving great feedback from cabin crew and customers already. It allows the crew to offer the thoughtful service they want to deliver and customers are treated as valued guests.”

Cabin crew will use their iPads for pretty much everything -  passenger check ins and seat allocations, customer account status and dietary requirements. Including safety manuals, timetables, and customer service updates. Passengers travlleing on the flight will be updated via 3G before departure, as opposed to the traditional method of printing a long piece of paper.

The idea would be to install 22 iPads in bin wagons to perform tasks such as, navigation and monitoring the level of recycled waste collected.

A council spokesman said: “For a modest investment of £9,000, this technology should save us many thousands of pounds, provide residents with a better service, and promote recycling. The system will allow us to closely monitor the volume, and the type of waste, we collect.”

However, the MP for Bury North, David Nuttall, was less enthusiastic, suggesting that a map and a clipboard would be better.

The council has confirmed the total cost of implementing iPads would be £9,000.
