Cortland, NY - The Cortland community will host the 2008 New York State West State Cup Final Four Soccer Championships next month, an event that over three days will bring in more than 60 teams and pump an estimated $500,000 into the local economy.

Sponsored by the Cortland Regional Sports Council in partnership with the Cortland County Youth Soccer Association, the tournament is set for May 30-June1. Teams from Buffalo to Rochester, Corning, and Syracuse will be participating in eight age brackets. New York West has committed to Cortland for next year's event, as well.

"Local hotels, restaurants and stores will reap the benefits of having this many soccer players, coaches and spectators in town for this event, " said sports council executive director Machell Phelps. "We're thrilled because once again we've shown that Cortland can be a viable venue for sports and recreational activities. People want to be here and of course we're happy to have them here."

Local Basketball Player set to compete in the Elks Hoop Shoot Finals

Cortland, NY - Robert Shaw, a sixth grade student at Barry Elementary school, will be leaving next week to attend the Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals in Springfield, Mass.

"It has been a fun experience for Robert," said Robert's dad, Kevin, who will be traveling with him to Springfield. "He has learned a little more about preparation, discipline and concentration because of it."

The Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is the largest coeducational youth sports program in the nation. As guests of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the six Northeast Central Region winners will compete against winners from 11 other regions for the title. Robert will compete in the 12-13 year-old boys division.

After winning the State Elks Hoop Shoot title in Homer this past February, Robert went on to compete in the regional Hoop Shoot competition held in Wilkes-Barre, Penn. He won the title there with 22 out of 25 shots made.

In the 36 year history of the Hoop Shoot event, this is the first time someone from Cortland has made it to the National Finals according to John Edinger, NYS Hoop Shoot Director Designate.

"The local Elks organization has been very supportive and we would like to thank them for a wonderful program" said Kevin Shaw.

Additional details on the contest and results will be posted after the event concludes at www.elks.org/hoopshoot and at www.cortlandsports.org.

"Part of what defines an event's success is its return. In this case, not only is the tournament back in Cortland, but so are many of the teams from last year. One of those teams is traveling from the Bahamas to Cortland for the fourth year in a row to participate in our tournament. This tells me that we're doing something right," said Machell Phelps, executive director of the CRSC. "Another overwhelming measure of success is the growth in registrations for the tournament. To go from 36 teams in 2005 to more than 100 teams in 2008 is remarkable. I think it speaks to the kind of event that Central Western puts on."

The games will be contested at several Cortland area locations: Park Center on SUNY Cortland's campus, the Cortland Junior-Senior High School, Homer High School, Homer Junior High and Intermediate School, TC3's Sports Complex and the County Office Building Gym. Age groups from under 11 to under 17 will be playing.

"Beyond the competition and fun for the participating teams, there is also an economic benefit for the Cortland community," Phelps said. "With this many teams in town for two days, area hotels, restaurants, gas stations and stores are bound to benefit."

Teams from Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester, Utica, Binghamton, Clinton and Pennsylvania are due to arrive between Thursday evening and Friday morning. Local teams from Cortland's newly formed Cortland Basketball Club AAU program are also slated to participate.

The Cortland Regional Sports Council, which brought the Lumberjack Invitational to the JM McDonald Sports Complex and most recently the NYSPHSAA Girls State Soccer Championships to Cortland, invites the community to come out and support the tournament. There is a nominal entry fee for adults. Age group finals will take place Saturday afternoon, starting around 1:00pm. After next Tuesday, March 18th, visit www.centralwestern.org or www.cortlandsports.org for the complete schedule.

Crown City Little League Announces Registration Dates

Registration begins February 11th for Cortland County youth age 6 to 12 who want to play baseball. Eligible players must reside in Cortland County (outside the Homer Little League boundaries) and have a birth date that falls between 05-01-1995 & 04-30-2002.

Registration forms will be available at the City Youth Bureau office, 35 Port Watson Street, Cortland from February 11 - March 14, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, or by sending an e-request to crowncitylittleleague@yahoo.com.

In addition to our weekly registration opportunities, the League is hosting a "Baseball Fun Day" for all eligible players at the J M McDonald Sports Complex on Saturday, February 16th from 8am until 12pm. Fun Day will be a great opportunity for parents and players to meet the Crown City Little League Board of Directors, register for the 2008 season, and spend some time shedding off some of those winter blues by doing some fun, interactive, baseball drills - so bring your favorite baseball cap & glove and join us for Fun Day!

Crown City Little League is the new face of baseball in Cortland and replaces the former Cortland Recreation Baseball Program previously offered through the City Youth Bureau. So if baseball is your game, we're the Team for you!

Players registering will need to show their original birth certificate and provide proof of residence/school district.
