This month we’ll be celebrating Lindy hop’s roots with a focus on the African American dancers and musicians that innovated the dance in the 1930s.

Our guest DJ is Nick Davis of Track Town Swing, who has DJed at prestigious events such as Herräng (Sweden), Camp Jitterbug (Seattle), Lindy Bout (Vancouver, BC), and more.

Downtown Swing Dance

• 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.: Beginner Lindy hop lesson with Bailey Keefe and Lindsey Almarode

April Lesson Series

We’re teaching two lesson series on Mondays, April 6 – 27 at Odd Fellows Hall.

Charleston 1: Beginner Charleston: 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

This 4-week lesson series will cover basic partner Charleston footwork, turns, kick-through, hand-to-hand, and airplane Charleston.

Lindy 2: Intermediate Lindy Hop: 8:00 – 9:00 p.m.

This 4-week series will continue where Lindy 1 left off, with fun variations on the swing-out, integration of 6-count patterns and tips on technique.

Cost for one series is $35 in advance or $40 at the door.

Lindy 1: Introduction to Lindy Hop

This 5 week lesson series will run Mondays, October 21 – November 18, with lessons from 7-8 p.m. and additional practice time until 8:30 p.m. This series will cover the basics of Lindy Hop: 8-count footwork, swing-out, Lindy circle, turns, footwork variations and more. This class is open to all ages and all levels. Individuals or partners welcome. Willingness to rotate partners is required. Cost for this lesson is $45 during pre-registration or $50 at the door. Happy September! We’re winding up our summer classes with a two week introduction to Collegiate Shag at Style Your Swing on Wednesday, September 11 and 18. Collegiate Shag originated in the 1930s and falls under the umbrella of swing dance, similar to Charleston, Lindy hop, and Balboa. Check out this video of a recent Collegiate Shag competition at Camp Hollywood.

Track Town Throwdown

Our friends at Track Town Swing our holding their first ever weekend event on October 4 – 6, the Track Town Throwdown. They’ve got a stellar lineup of international instructors, plus the amazing Stealin’ Apples Jazz Band featuring Jen Hodge.

The event features two days of workshops, two nights of dancing to live music, competitions, and daytime activities. Workshops are available for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Registration is available at: tracktownthrowdown.com/registration/

Style Your Swing

Join us Wednesdays at 7:30 this summer to learn new dance skills, or fine tune the ones you already have! Style Your Swing alternates lessons and practica for the first 45 minutes each week, followed by 45 minutes of dancing to DJed music.

Swing Family Picnic

Thursday, August 15th, we’ll have our annual Swing Family Picnic. We’ll have food, games, dancing, and live music from local band Swangle. This is a potluck style event, bringing food or games is encouraged but not required. This event is free, so bring your friends and family out for a fun night of live music, food, and friends.

We’ll be at Starker Arts Park, located at 4485 SW Country Club Dr

Swing Dance in Independence

Sunday, September 8th, we’ll be hosting a dance at Maxine’s Ballroom in Independence. There will be carpools leaving from Corvallis if anyone is in need of transportation. Our aim is to share the culture of Swing dance a broader group of folks in surrounding areas, so come join for a night of lessons, dancing, and meeting new people.

Our final downtown dance of the season is this Saturday, June 8.

This month, we have guest teachers and DJs from Eugene, OR. Nika Jin and Nick Davis of Track Town Swing Club will be teaching the introductory lesson. Kristin Buxton will be DJing alongside Nick.
