É esperado um motor com potência de 700 hp no mínimo com o auxílio de compressor e injeção direta. Isso irá implicar num sistema de injeção de maior pressão do que já é aplicado no motor LT1 de injeção direta. Esses motores tem maior compressão o que gera certos desafios técnicos que são ainda maiores com compressores. É esperado que o carro seja mais largo na traseira e que os freios sejam de cerâmica-carbono assim como o maior uso de fibra de carbono na carroceria. É esperar para ver, mas com certeza será um tremendo carro. Lembrando que o Ferrari FF produz mais de 660 hp e com certeza o Corvette iria elevar esse patamar unindo baixo consumo de combustível e evitando impostos altos devido à isso como o Viper, Ferrari e Lamborghini sempre tiveram que pagar. Eis que já aparecem desenhos do C7 vestido para matar. Note que bacana a entrada de ar atrás da roda traseira como no Z06 e ZR1. Ficou interessante. Gostei dos faróis amarelos "Franceses" estilo Le Mans.

Já que vários de vocês, amigos e amigas, mandaram email perguntando aqui vai a resposta: Adorei o carro! Sério mesmo. Naturalmente o que foi apresentado é o Corvette básico que é de alumínio, fibra de carbono, motor de 450 hp (o LS3 tinha antes 436), câmbio de 7 marchas. Aerodinâmica é fundamental para performance: dinâmica do carro, downforce para velocidade em curva e eficiência de energia (combustível). Uma das características mais bacanas do C7 é como ele trabalha o fluxo de ar quente do radiador, como falamos antes. O ar quente (menos denso) sai por cima do capô e por cima da carroceria fazendo o menos denso acelerar por debaixo do assoalho e criar downforce. Os dutos traseiros também são funcionais para freio e diferencial e, colocando-os na traseira, não é preciso passar dutos a partir da frente do carro. Bonito e funcional.

E finalmente chega o dia de conhecermos o novo Corvette, agora também chamado Stingray.Esse é ainda o modelo básico do carro, mas que básico! Esse carro tem tanta tecnologia e materiais nobres que você pode até imaginar que a Chevrolet está lavando dinheiro. Impressionante e vamos falar um pouco preliminarmente do carro.

Para começar, o design e aparência. Confesso que estava preocupado mas ver o carro em sua forma final, com as suas curvas e detalhes de carroceria, em vermelho, me agradou muito. O carro tem teto e capô em fibra de carbono de série desde a versão básica. O chassis é todo de alumínio (algo que só acontecia no Z06 e ZR1) ao invés de aço do carro básico e Grand Sport anteriores. E não é śo isso: mais leve e 60% mais rígido. Imagino que os fabricantes de super carros e carros esportes do mundo estão com uma dor de cabeça enorme olhando esse carro com esse desempenho e tecnologias à esse custo.

O câmbio manual é de 7 marchas e o automático de 8. Legal que ainda existem fabricantes que dão essa opção aos verdadeiros entusiastas ao invés de apenas o automático. O automático não ficou pronto à tempo e por isso nos dois primeiros anos vai ser fornecido por uma empresa Japonesa. Mas o de 7 marchas é um espetáculo. O carro ainda possíu sistema inteligente de rotação, faz o punta-taco para você na redução (como o Nissan 350Z que foi o primeiro de série com isso) mas também executa a rotação perfeita quando se sobe de marcha. É um sistema mais completo e complexo que o da Nissan e com certeza dá para desabilitar como o controle de tração. Além disso tem o diferencial eletrônico que ajuda nas curvas.

Assim como no C6R de competição, há uma abertura no capô que serve de exaustor do ar quente do radiador. Ar quente é menos denso e passar o ar por cima do carro ao invés de por baixo, como nos demais esportivos, aumenta o downforce pois deixa o mais denso rodar pelo resto do assoalho do veículo. Carros de competição sempre fazem isso.

A Audi foi uma das primeiras empresas à equipar seus carros com direção assistida elétricamente. O problema disso é que tira a sensibilidade da direção. Já a Porsche veio com um sistem feito pela ZF com uma polia para transmissão interna na cremalheira para que a sensação fosse a mesma do natural. A Porsche queria os benefícios do sistema elétrico mas não queria tirar a sensibilidade do piloto. Funcionou e o Corvette adota o mesmo sistema da ZF só que feito para o Corvette. Espetáculo! Uma das minhas grandes críticas com o C5 era a direção muito tipo Cadillac e volante grande. No C6, depois de 2007, isso foi corrigido e ficou fantástico. A Chevrolet diz que o volante do C7 é menor e que a direção é 5 vezes mais firme que o C6 (deve ser o C6 comum. pois do Z06 e ZR1 é bem diferente) o que é ótimo para quem curte guiar.

O novo motor, LT1, tem compressão muito maior pois usa injeção direta. Com isso os injetores tem que trabalhar num nível absurdo de pressão mas em compensação as temperaturas são menores, economia maior, potência maior e total eficiência do sistema. O carro tem também sistema de timing variável e desliga 4 cilindros (como na Silverado 2011 que tenho) para maior econômia. Ainda, o sistema de escapamento tem um outro estágio eletrônico que fecha quando o carro está rodando com menos cilindros. O sistema funciona cortando o combustível e faísca em 4 cilindros mas não pode ficar assim muito tempo tem que reciclar. Caso contrário, os cilindros e toda as peças de força do motor tem stress diferente e podem comprometer a durabilidade do mesmo. Genial! Adoro isso na minha pickup que alías só dá para notar no painel eletrônico de tão macial que a transição é.

Externamente o carro ganha janelinhas traseiras no lugar do vidro envolvente tipo hatch. Também ganha lanternas estilo Camaro que não agradou à muitos. Mas o sistema de fárois, o desenho lateral e do capô são muito atrantes ainda que os faróis de neblina tenham sido eliminados. Algo que deve mudar nas versões mais violentas. Os videos à seguir mostram bem o carro. Qual minha opinião final? Gostei muito! E acho que vou gostar muito mais quando testar o carro em breve. Ainda, devo esperar pelas versões mais bravas como o Z06 e ZR1.

Para um fabricante de carros esportes da década de 50 ou anteriores, quanto maior o número de carros na mão de particulares ganhando provas e elevando o
status da marca ao nível de mito, melhor.Isso, claro, foi na época dourada do automobilismo onde não haviam envolvimento maiores de corporações pagando por todo o enorme custo que a brincadeira de competir com automóveis demanda.

Mas não apenas Sir Lyons era o responsável pelo belo carro.O XKSS foi também obra de Malcolm Sayer, o engenheiro de aerodinâmica que criou o famoso e vencedor Jaguar D-Type.

O playboy milionário Briggs S. Cunningham queria competir com os famosos D-Type na série Americana SCCA já que era um carro de sucesso internacional comprovado. Logo, o XKSS (sua versao de rua) era a ferramenta perfeita para Briggs.

O objetivo do XK-SS era de ser uma versao de rua do D-Type onde entusiastas que curtiam correr nas provas da SCCA pudessem ser clientes do carro. Na verdade, o que ocorreu foi que houve uma "sobra" de chassis do D-Type que nunca competiram e os mesmos foram convertidos no XK-SS. Em 1957, a Jaguar abandonou as competições de forma oficial devido à também repercursão negativa do famoso acidente de Le Mans em 1955. Assim como a Mercedes, que largou de vez todas as competições por causa da fatalidade das várias mortes envolvendo um dos seus carros no templo Francês dois anos antes.Essa foi a principal razão de os chassis extras do D-Type estarem disponíveis para o que resultaria num dos mais bonitos carros esportes já criados: o XK-SS. A maioria das fotos aqui foram de minha autoria e algumas até tremidas devido à emoção de ver, tocar e sentir o carro de perto.

Malcom Sayer desenhou o XKSS para ter um parabrisa envolvente de plexiglass e janelas laterais removiveis. O cockpit foi alargado com
devido acabamento de acordo com o padrão de luxo esporte da Jaguar. Uma capota conversível foi adicionada ao carro e um tanque de combustível maior
também utilizado, o que tirou a possibilidade de um porta-malas que era "quase" compensado pelo rack montado na parte traseira da carroceria. Além disso,
uma porta do lado do passageiro foi adicionada (havia apenas uma porta no D-Type para salvar peso), a divisão entre o espaço do piloto e passageiro (obrigatório
pelas regras) foi removida assim como a barbatana aerodinâmica do D-Type.

O carro foi oferecido inicialmente no território Americano em Janeiro de 1957 pela barganha de US$7,500 Dólares isso comparado ao custo de um Mercedes
300SLR roadster que custava $US10,500 na época. Essa era a filosofia de Lyons: qualidade por menor preço que a concorrência. Um detalhe importante, o XK-SS era
muito mais rápido que o 300SLR apesar de bem espartano.

Inicialmente, Lyons apostava no sucesso do carro mas um acidente na fábrica em Coventry destruiu a seção de montagem do XK-SS. O acidente ocorreu em 12 de Fevereiro
de 1957 e na fábrica haviam 25 carros já completos. Porém o fogo destrui 9 dos carros e 16 foram salvos. Posteriormente, haviam peças suficientes para fabricar
mais dois XKSS e assim o total de carros é na verdade 18.Dessa forma, somando os D-Type de clientes, os 18 D-Type oficiais de fábrica mais os 18 XK-SS a plataforma
rendeu 68 chassis produzidos. Interessante notar que haviam 300 carros sendo fabricados no momento do incêndio o que teria rendido uma quantidade interessante de XK-SS em 1957 e 1958.

Vamos falar um pouco do D-Type que foi o carro que originou o XK-SS. O D-Type tinha construção tipo monobloco feita de ligas da alumínio. O monobloco tinha um formato
elíptico o que o tornava bastante rígido para torção. Ao tubo do monobloco, era aparafusado duas sub-estruturas. A primeira dianteira era para a montagem do motor dianteiro, câmbio, suspensão e caixa de direção. Já a segunda sub-estrutura traseira servia para montar a suspensão traseira e diferencial. O tanque era traseiro montado no tubo do monobloco como no XK-SS. Porém havia uma novidade: ao invés de um tanque convencional de metal, uma bolsa deformável fabricada pela Marston Aviation compunha o tanque de combustível e seu design seguia padrões de aviação para segurança algo que seria adotado nos carros de produção de massa depois da década de 70. O tanque do carro tinha capacidade para 44 galões Americanos (o galão Inglês é de maior volume), algo em torno de impressionantes 168 litros.

O D-Type era muito eficiente aerodinâmicante pois seu designer, Malcom Sayer, era um ex engenheiro da Bristol Aeroplane Company e também tinha tido experiência anterior
no desenvolvimento do C-Type. Malcom queria reduzir a aŕea frontal do carro e assim o engenheiro chefe da Jaguar, William Hayes junto com Walter Hassan 
(ex engenheiro da Bentley) desenvolverão um sistema de lubrificação de carter à seco (dry sump) para o D-Type. O resultado do esforço dos trabalhos no carro
eram evidentes pela velocidade máxima em 1954 ao final da Mulsanne (reta do circuito de Le Mans) de 278 km/h com o lendário motor XK 6 cilindros em linha. Em comparação, a maior velocidade que a Ferrari 375 plus (V12 de 5 litros) de maior potência conseguia era de 257 km/h. Mas a Ferrari ganhou a edição de 1954 com 1 minuto e 45 segundos de vantagem pois o D-Type sofreu com problemas de combustível e terminou em segundo.O D-Type falhou no seu primeiro ano em repetir o sucesso do C-Type em 1953.

Em 1955 o D-Type teve o seu nariz alterado e alongado o que criou a versão chamada de long nose. XKSS era mais similar à versão short nose de 1954. Mecânicamente o D-Type tinha o mesmo motor XK e os freios à disco do C-Type (inovação da Jaguar). Apesar de 1956 ter sido a última temporada oficial do D-Type de fábrica, em 1957 foi o ano de maior sucesso do D-Type.O carro conquistou as 6 primeiras colocações em Le Mans pelas mãos de equipes privadas como a Ecurie Ecosse (ainda que com apoio técnico de fábrica da Jaguar).

Voltando ao XK-SS sua ficha técnica é bem interessante. O carro tinha câmbio manual de 4 marchas, distância entre-eixos de 2.3 metros, comprimento de 3.99 metros, largura 1.66 metros e altura de 1.1 metro. Pesava apenas 890 kilos à seco. O motor era o clássico XK6 que tanto no D-Type quanto no XK-SS era o de versão "wide angle" de cabeçote com 3.4 litros de capacidade volumétrica. O pouco peso do carro aliado ao motor que produzia 250 hp levava o carro de 0 à 100 km/h em apenas 7.3 segundos (um absurdo para a época). O D-Type acelerava em 5.2 segundos. A sua velocidade máxima era mais modesta que o primo D-Type sendo de "apenas" 240 km/h. Ainda hoje poucos esportivos igualam em aceleração à esse bólido de quase 60 anos de idade!

Talvez o proprietário mais famoso de um dos XK-SS é o ator e entusiasta Americano Steve McQueen. Ele tinha um dos exemplares pintado em British Racing Green que ele apelidou carinhosamente de "Green Rat", ou seja "Rato Verde". Hoje em dia, o carro é parte da coleção de McQueen que é administrada pela famosa empresa Microsoft. Em 2010 o carro começou a ser mostrado em várias partes dos Estados Unidos e aqui é que começa nosso contato com ele.Aliás, o carro das fotos e do video é o próprio.

No dia 14 de Julho de 2012 aconteceu uma oportunidade interessante. O XK-SS de propriedade de Steve McQueen ficou no Museum of Fine Arts da Universidade que estudei. Mais ainda, nesse dia o museu não estaria aberto à público mas sim à um pequeno e seleto grupo incluindo o famoso colecionador e apresentador Jay Leno.

Deu também tempo para fazer várias fotos e videos que vou compartilhar em breve, mas por enquanto vamos mostrar um dos videos que inclui o XK-SS que é tema do texto.
