The development of the ‘anatomical’ or ‘shaped’ implant offers surgeons and patients the option of an implant design that resembles a more natural ‘teardrop’ shape. Breast Implant Placement

The implant can be placed under the breast tissue in a ‘subglandular’ pocket or under the pectoralis major chest muscle in a ‘submuscular’ pocket. The submuscular approach may may involve more discomfort and a slightly longer recovery period. However, it produces a more natural appearance in the upper pole of the breast and has a lower incidence of capsular contracture.

The subglandular approach offers a quicker recovery and is more suitable when the nipple is in a lower position on the breast. Implants placed in this way may be more visible and ‘obvious’. Do note that if the nipple is very low, a straightforward augmentation may not produce satisfactory results. In this case, the nipple may need to be lifted in a procedure called the mastopexy.

Some women may have breasts of slightly different sizes. If the asymmetry is significant, the breast augmentation procedure will be more complex and may involve different implant sizes and additional adjustments.

Are Breast Implants Suitable For Anyone?

Implant surgery may not be appropriate for women with

• A family history of breast cancer. If you have a first line relative with breast cancer, guidance should be offered to explain your breast cancer risk management

• Previous breast pathology (mastitis, mastalgia, or multiple breast lumps)

• Coexisting medical conditions such as autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and bleeding disorders

• Dependence on optimal function of musculature such as athletes

• Previous history of psychiatric disorders

• Medication that thins the blood

Do Breast Implants Produce Pleasing Results For All Women?

Breast implants may not necessarily improve results for women with

• Droopy (ptotic) breasts

• Tuberose breasts (narrow, conical breasts with large areolae)

• Very thin chest skin

• A tendency to form bad scars

Therefore to ensure that you do not end up with a botched implant job, be sure to consult with and be operated on by only an experienced, board-certified breast augmentation surgeon. Spending time to do extensive research and considering the various factors of breast augmentation is key.
