I grew up about 15 miles from Hollywood Beach, Florida. All the local high schools had their section of beach. Our high school staked its claim on Johnson Street. But other than hanging out at the beach, I don’t really recall doing too much else in Hollywood Beach. It was a sleepy beach front, lined with old motels, some dive bars and not much else. When we went out, we headed up the road to Fort Lauderdale. Hollywood Beach was where the old people hung out in their lawn chairs. Today, there’s a Jersey-style boardwalk and the gigantic Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Resort, which has it’s own artificial wave pool. Despite all that, the beach front is still, frankly, surprisingly underdeveloped. That’s actually pretty cool. I’d much rather have more of the old dive motels and less of the Margaritavilles. We strolled along the boardwalk during our trip to South Florida for Thanksgiving. The old bandshell is still there. Back when I was in high school in the 80s, it was a big deal because it was where they filmed a scene for the movie Body Heat. I wonder if anyone today has even heard of that movie.

We got out of DC the weekend after the election. I think it was something we needed — to unplug from the news and all thoughts of the political circus and just hang out with friends. We rented a huge beach house in Bethany, Delaware that had 11 bedrooms. This is actually a candid I took of my wife. She’s either reading or she has fallen asleep reading in this chair. I think the image has a Hopperesque feel to it, or at least that’s what I was feeling when I took it.

During our trip to Sonoma in early October, we stopped by the Pixar Animation Studios near Oakland to visit a friend of mine who is a director of photography there. While we have Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc. and Cars 3 in heavy rotation in our house, I was embarrassed to say that I had not yet seen Coco. There’s a whole wing of the Steve Jobs building on the Pixar campus that has a Coco exhibit, with drawings, sculptures and different production sketches on display. So, one of the first things we did when we got back to D.C. was to pull up Coco on Netflix. Wow. It’s an amazing movie. One of my favorites — and not just animated movies but any movie I’ve seen recently. Naturally, Miguel was the perfect Halloween costume for my daughter. A red hoodie, some white and black face paint and a toy guitar and we were set.

My organization, Focus on the Story, kicked off its speakers’ series last night with a panel discussion at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. Our guest speaker was James Whitlow Delano, a photojournalist based in Tokyo who has covered climate change issues all around the world. However, for this discussion, he presented his work documenting the impact of the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines under President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs. The families of the victims, almost all of them residents of the slums, are the collateral damage in this war. A selection of these photos were part of James’ winning entry in our Focus on the Story 2018 Awards.
