Thank you for reading and becoming a fan of The Cosmic Vibes Blog. Many of your comments, emails and feedback out in the field have inspired and driven me to continue on this journey. I've gone from writing the blog, to photography, now video and lately providing support for local and national live music, venues, and festivals through Twitter, Facebook and You Tube. All of the work done here has paid off in ways that I never thought possible. It has allowed me to obtain all access media passes at concerts and festivals, meet cool people from bands, meet fans that have the same passion for seeing and documenting the experience of live music. Most of all it has allowed me to help promote fellow musicians and artists, which is what gives me the most satisfaction out of this project. Now it's to the point where I think of it and treat it as a business.
The future of Cosmic Vibes is going to focus on bringing the concert experience home to the fans. Providing fans with one place to go for an events calendar, pictures and videos from shows, links to local DC/Baltimore bands, music venues and festivals. The Blogger format is no longer the easiest and most effective way for me to deliver those things to the reader. For the past 6 months I have been building a new site that can accomplish all of those goals without the fan leaving the site to go find video or photos from events. The new site will eventually allow other fans to contribute their reviews, photos and videos from their experience at shows. The site is now up and running. I still have work to do as it will always be a work in progress, however it is ready and loaded with photos, videos, concert calendar, Live Music Archives widget, and blog page for reviews.

From now on I will be posting everything over at Cosmic Vibes Live. I hope you will join me on my new journey and thank you for joining me here at The Cosmic Vibes Blog.

The Infamous Stringdusters: State Theatre Falls Church VA.

The Infamous Stringdusters and Trampled By Turtles brought their Fly Palomino Tour to The State Theatre in Falls Church Friday night 11/12/10. With many choices of great music in the DC metro on this Friday they managed to sell out The State. Believe me it was a great night of music right here in Falls Church VA. A long line in front of the venue left fans waiting outside to miss some of the super fast paced, progressive bluegrass of Trampled By Turtles. They literally wail on their instruments. The banjo player strums his banjo like it's a guitar. I heard a lot of people in the crowd saying they had never heard of this band. Who are these guys they rock? How do they have so much energy? How do they play their instruments so fast? All I can say is WOW. This band was awesome. They brought so much energy into the room and prepped the crowd for The Dusters. I am sorry I missed them at Del Fest but it appears they have blown up since, and the fans are digging them. Here is a video of one of the performances by TBT @ The State on CosmicVibesLive you tube channel.

After the crowd was well warmed up from TBT, The Infamous Stringdusters took the stage around 10 pm kickin it off with Fork In The Road, and keeping that face paced energy going with the fiddle tune Y2K. After God's country the boys thanked TBT saying "we didn't know these guys before but we're in the midst of fifteen shows with them and every night they just keep blowing our minds, we love it. We love em so much we're gonna have them at The Festy next year." "Was anyone at The Festy? Well if you weren't at The Festy ask one of those people near you screaming about it. Or maybe they don't want you to know".
The Festy was an absolutely amazing experience and you should go next year if you love bluegrass, mountains, and people who love music. We'll be there again for sure! This band's sound and energy continues to improve every time I see them. Here is some video footage from the next song Getting Down The Road This is where they really started getting into the groove. The night continued to get better and more intenese as they jammed out Black Rock, Hit Parade of Love, When Silence is The Lonely Sound>Rain> and back into Silence. Aside from being on that stage, it doesn't get better than a watching bunch of guys on stage having fun playing music. You can see it in their faces that they are just having a blast. It provides an even better experience for the fan. I know it does for me at least.
Next up was "High On A Mountain Top" a tune written by theirs and everybody's bluegrass hero Del McCoury, then ripping into tune after tune through a 18 song set. Ending the show with amazing encore performance by unplugging their instruments, getting out on the floor and doing an acoustic version of "The Weight" by The Band with all of the fans singing back up. There is no better way to connect with the fans then to let them be a part of the show. This part was a lot of fun, and looking back at the video it's definitely one of those give you the chills moments.

Along with plenty of top shelf whiskey being doled out by folks that could tell you anything you wanted to know about whiskey, it's history and the rebellion.

The music consisted of solo acts, and duets on the downstairs stage. Full bands of a few different genre on the main stage up stairs. The sets were staggered so that when one act would finish downstairs the fans would be advised to head upstairs for the next band. The Whiskey a very spacious and accommodating venue for patrons and musicians alike. A very well run establishment I must say.

The music kicked off at 4pm on the downstairs stage to a pretty decent size mid afternoon crowd with Ace Elijah. The music was continuous from then until close. I can only report on what I saw and here is what I saw

Moonliscious DC area Funk/Rock/Jam band started it off on the upstairs stage with a forty five minute funky original set. Followed by Maybe Not Even a blues/rock band out of Annapolis MD. I really dug this bands sound, their choices for covers as well as their originals. They were followed by Small Targets out of Philadelphia. The music continued on downstairs with the beautiful voice and guitar playing of Christie Lenee. At 9:10 pm the much anticipated arrival of the amazing bluegrass band The Whiskey Rebellion on the upstairs stage. The high energy quartet went off the rails with Ozzy, Ran like hell with Pink Floyd, and went down to Deep Ellum for the blues. They performed some of their original numbers as well for a solid seventy five minute bluegrass set in front of a whiskey energized audience. The Cheaters rock band of the mid atlantic region continued the energy with some high energy original rock n roll. Finishing off the night to close out the party on the main stage also from Annapolis Sweet Leda. The night got too late for me to stick around for them but I heard they were great. The whole whiskey event was a lot of fun and it's a great venue. So get on down to The Whiskey next time you visit Annapolis. As they're known for showing off and supporting some of the best local bands of the Mid Atlantic region.

Thank you to Christina for organizing this great event and congrats to a job well done, also to The Whiskey for putting on the event, sound man Ruckus for all of your help with the recordings and making sure the sound was great all day, also to the great staff and all of the great musicians who participated in the event. It was an awesome day of music, fun and meeting new friends. I hope we can do it again next year.
Taking place in the rolling hills of Appalachia at the beautiful grounds of the Devils Backbone Brewery in Nelson County VA. With 360 degree panoramic mountain views, beautiful weather, friendly folks and a stacked line up, I couldn't think of a better place to spend a fall weekend.

The Infamous Stringdusters played ninety minute sets both nights in front of The Festy Stage crowd as well as late night campsite jams for those willing to brave the late night cold. The second round of those late night jams lasting until 5 am Monday morning.

Other artists to grace the presence of the crowd on The Festy Stage throughout the weekend included Stillwater N.J. jamgrass band Railroad Earth whose sound was so good and crisp, I remember it reflecting off the nearby mountains to create a "surround sound" feel. Also legendary flat picker Tony Rice and his band The Tony Rice Unit, The sweet and soft voice of Aoife O'Donovan, and energetic banjo playing from Gregory Liszt of Crooked Still from Boston MA., Virginia native and guitar legend Larry Keel and Natural Bridge, and last but certainly not least the instrumental extravaganza Toubab Krewe from Asheville NC

The Festy presented lots of opportunities for impromptu jams and collaborations, a musicians and music lovers delight. The collaborations began early on Saturday with Travis Book, bass player of The Stringdusters joining Sara Siskind for a portion of her set, then joined by Andy Falco (Guitar) shortly thereafter. At one point Sara telling the crowd "why have one duster when you can have two". Sara also explained her love of music to the crowd simply and beautifully, "I don't know I just love music so much, that if I couldn't play it every day I would just die".

The Mandolin player of Love Canon joined the newly formed Misty Strings of Charlottesville VA. for a fantastic and one of my favorite sets on the Southern Stage. Fiddle player of Love Canon joined Larry Keel as well as Larry's brother Gary Keel on guitar. Trees on Fire were joined by fire dancers on the side of the Southern Stage, and to finish off The Festy, members of The Infamous Stringdusters joined Toubab Krewe for some bluegrass/african jams. Stay tuned to the CosmicVibesLive You Tube channel for videos from many of these awesome performances.

From arrival to departure at The Festy Experience we just felt right at home, charmed with that good ole southern hospitality. A big thank you to Devils Back Bone Brewery, our friends at Starr Hill Brewery (for letting us put our flyers out), our awesome neighbors (on both sides at camp), Stephanie at Make It Bigger Mama Publicity, The Artist Farm, CERBERUS Productions, LLC and of course The Infamous Stringdusters and all the bands. I just wanted to fill you in on some things that are happening in the future at Cosmic Vibes and some things I will be covering this fall. There hasn't been much to post about since the Gov't Mule show. I've been busy playing drums in the band Moonliscious and will be playing my first show with them at Second Chance Saloon this Saturday night 10/02. I've also been busy doing outdoor activities such as Brookside Gardens "Wings Of Fancy" butterfly garden and Big Meadows Campground in Shenandoah with my girlfriend Christa. What an amazing place at Big Meadows. It was absolutely beautiful, quiet, friendly and down right peaceful. We hiked Dark Hollow Falls and The Meadow. We saw a 6 point buck, lots of birds, a family of skunks, and lots more. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, we did not see any bear. It's a great place to take the whole family. Stay in a tent, camper, RV or rent a cabin, whatever your pleasure.

I posted some new photo links from our Big Meadow trip, last weeks "Harvest Moon" and more in the outdoor and wildlife section on the right column. Also in the right hand column on the top are links to my new CosmicVibesLive You Tube channel . There you can view various videos that I recorded from various concerts. Videos from Tea Leaf Green, Gov't Mule, local DC area bands, some of the players at Del Fest Academy and more. The You Tube channel will be part of my new website. I will be dropping the Blogger format sometime in the near future and starting my own website Cosmic Vibes Live. It is now under construction and part of my new ideas for the future of Cosmic Vibes.
My boss highly recommended it to us, knowing that we are bird lovers. We will be heading up for "Owl O Ween" for some owl, eagle and hawk watching. Stay tuned as I hope to get some footage of some of these awesome birds, and hope to give you my recommendations for visiting Hawk Mountain in the future.
What a night of great music and fun at a great, non Live Nation outdoor concert venue in the DC area

Gov't Mule sounds better than ever. Their new bass player Jorgen Carlsson has brought them to another level and sounding (dare I say) like the old days of Allen Woody. On the surface there are many differences in the band between now and then. The 1st and major one is obvious for Mule fans, now they're a four piece band, in the old days a three piece. Also the many different directions the band has taken musically and emotionally over the years after Allen. That being said Jorgen brings back a feel to the band that I feel has been missing for some time now. His heavy heart pounding bass lines really bring back the rock n roll, the blues, and the funkiness in Gov't Mule. It really stood out at the beginning of the bass driven "Broke Down On The Brazos". It also stood out well on "Feel Like Breakin Up Somebody's Home". A greasy blues song as Warren put it. "Somebody told me in this part of Virginia they like the greasy blues. Well this is some nasty blues right here".
He wasn't kidding.

Mr Ron Holloway of the DC area joined the band on Saxophone for Sco Mule, Blind Man, Soulshine and for the encore: Take Me To The River. Opener Jackie Greene joining the band for the encore as well. The crowd was more than pleased to see Gov't Mule really rock out a great show. A good crowd indeed for the far suburbs of Washington on a Sunday late afternoon/ early evening. If you missed this one, get out there for a Mule show, the tour runs until new years eve. You can check them out Saturday Sept 4th at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison CO. with The Avett Brothers and Truth and Salvage Co. <(A Chris Robinson production)
I was not able to attend that make up show in February and I'm sure it was great. I did happen to catch this New Orleans throw down, that DC fans were hoping for on that cold snowy February Saturday. Friday August 6th was the make up show in my opinion.
Galactic always manages to bring special guest musicians from New Orleans or sometimes local DC musicians. The godfather of hip hop Chuck Brown from DC joined them on stage a few years ago at 9:30 club. This time around they would bring Cyril Neville from the legendary Neville family to play percussion and vocals. Also Corey Henry of the Rebirth Brass Band blowing the trombone and helping out on vocals. Ivan Neville was also in town and joined them for a couple of numbers. It's always a party at a Galactic show. They always turn it up a notch when visiting DC and this time was no exception.
Stanton Moore's exceptional drumming and ability to drive the band was nothing new either. Keeping the funk beats rockin while jumping up and down in his chair, changing sticks to mallets to shakers back to sticks. The guy is just an unbelievable talent who inspires many, including myself.

Please enjoy some photos and video I was able to capture at the show. Get out and see some Galactic if they are in your town. You will not be let down.
It was an awesome day of different musical acts of many genre, international food vendors, tropical drinks and a plethora of artist booths and exhibits. Billed as America's largest free arts festival with 350,000 in attendance over a three day period. Make sure to attend Artscape next year as they will celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Some of this years line up are as follows: Chopteeth a 14 piece Afrobeat/Funk band with an infectious horn section out of Baltimore, had the crowd dancing an hooping at the Wachovia stage. Check this band out if you're up for a night of grooving and dancing.

The crowds kept on packing in as the electro/funk band Damn Right out of Baltimore/Philly got set up to rock the stage. "Formed onstage in a Baltimore nightclub, Damn Right! has since cut it's teeth grinding up and down the east coast. Electronic breaks, vocal samples and pop synths define their sound and drives every show to be a dance party- from NYC warehouses to beaches in the Virgin Islands" Read more bio @ Damn Right MySpace Bio. Damn Right will be holding down a residency at Baltimore's 8 X 10 Club every Thursday in August so head up there and check them out soon.

Jackie Greene and his band Rocked the Wachovia stage next. Jackie a solo recording artist out of Salinas CA. who has toured with the likes of Phil Lesh and Friend's, Ratdog, Susan Tedeschi, Huey Lewis, Taj Mahal, and Buddy Guy. He puts on a serious show switching from guitar to different guitar, piano/keys, and harmonica. At one point asking the crowd if there are any Grateful Dead fans. After a huge roar of approval they rocked out "New Speedway Boogie". Get a free recording of the show Jackie Green thanks to taper Timothy Brown.

Cold War Kids an Indie rock band out of Long Beach CA totally ripped it to a very large crowd that was very anxious to see them, one man getting taken away by medics from I assume heat exhaustion. Lead singer Nathan Willett very concerned for the mans safety but also thankful that they didn't have their first death at one of their shows. When I asked the girl next to me about them, she said well that's who we're all here to see. I begged to differ with her, saying the crowd was there waiting for headliner Gov't Mule. I'm pretty sure I was wrong after seeing them play and the way the crowd reacted to them. Cold War Kids had a serious energy about them that fed the crowd. Band members changing instruments, slamming maracas into cymbals and playing keyboards with the neck of the guitar. I'm definitely a new fan of Cold War Kids

The crowds were just as massive when Gov't Mule took the Wachovia stage. No more room for hooping as people filled just about every spot on the grass and pavement. Warren Haynes and the boys making the fifteen song short set count. Joined by very special guests DC's Ron Holloway on Saxophone and also Jackie Greene making and encore appearance for a sweet rendition of The Grateful Dead's "Sugaree". Here is a free recording of the show thanks again to taper Timothy Brown. Gov't Mule and Jackie Greene will be playing the Loudon Summer Fest at Belmont Country Club in Ashburn VA on Sunday August 8th. I hope to see you out there.
It all began with a huge line of traffic heading in. The party definitely starting for many right along side the road entering the festival. The usual fingers in the air hoping for that miracle ticket. It was a grueling 4 hour wait to get about 8 miles to the gate. We arrived at our campsite at 4pm. Just in enough time to set up, eat, drink and head down to the main Dragon Stage for the first night of music including Donna Jean Godchaux and Dark Star Orchestra. When we arrived at the main stage for the music, is when we realized there would be record crowds. After being there all weekend I'm pretty sure we were right. It's what happens when they stack the line up with the top bands on the scene.

The music, was amazing as always with eclectic acts from many different genre, including Furthur. Featuring Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead. They played two solid sets lasting almost four hours (Bobby singing the five hour rain away with a killer "Looks like Rain". Also Widspread Panic, Yonder Mountain String Band, Umphrey's Mcgee, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Railroad Earth, Tea Leaf Green and many more. All good is, was and will always be an incredible time for the jam scene lover. Awesome music, loving friendly people, good causes, mountains and lots of partying. What more could you ask for in a festival?

Speaking of good causes. I would like to mention a great cause that I happened upon while seeing some music at the festival. Rock House Arts Foundation from Baltimore MD. A foundation which donates music instruments to schools and youth organizations. When I walked into the Rock House tent and met Dan Ostrowski, I saw his passion in the way he explained what he was doing with the foundation and it's proceeds. It just made me want to help. After I made a donation, he told me that it would help a little kid get an instrument. It couldn't have felt better. I'm a big believer in starting kids in music at a young age. A lot of schools don't have music programs like we did when we were kids, and a lot of parents don't have money to provide their kids with instruments or lessons. I am passing this along in hopes that you all will support Dan and his mission. He's a great guy. Go by and visit his site and make a donation. I'll keep you posted on any events or auctions that may happen in the future.

I won't be reviewing the festival's musical acts due to missing some of the main events on Saturday night and all of Sunday. Also not being able to get close enough to the stage for pictures after dark with the massive crowds on hand. I will say look out for Greensky Bluegrass and The Macpodz. Two completely different types of music, both bands played exceptional sets. Please enjoy the moments I was able to capture by clicking the links below. You can follow me @cosmicvibesblog on twitter, I will be posting reviews from other outlets as they are posted. I'll also be posting audio links from the festival in the near future.
Baltimore, MD, 7/12/10--

On the eve of their appearance on 89.7 WTMD's Baltimore Unsigned radio show (7/20/10, 8pm), instrumental rock duo The Water will bring their lush and thunderous live set to The Windup Space on Monday 7/19/10. Joining them will be Night and the City (DC) and We Are Hex (Indianaopolis). The three bands will also play at The Velvet Lounge in DC (7/19/10). In August, The Water heads up to Philadelphia to play at the North Star Bar.
THE WATER
Creating swooping soundscapes from layered synth, guitar, and percussion, Baltimore-based instrumental rock duo The Water (Dan Cohan and James Klink) transport listeners to an otherworldly realm with “elegant simplicity....finding unique ways to transition from soft to loud and back each time” (Baltimore City Paper). Equal parts intensity and optimism, The Water's “immersive and dazzling live show....serves up a strong cut of straight-up post-rock. Technically tight, but not overly complicated, their music works in the realm of nuance with an ear for great arrangements” (Aural States blog). The Water's live set is complemented by a low-tech light show featuring a pulsating, multicolored obelisk.

In 2010, The Water released their second self-titled EP, produced and mastered at by Woody Ranere and Steve Wright at Wrightway Studios in Baltimore, Maryland. Their first self-titled EP (2009) was produced by Matthew Leffler-Schulman at Mobtown Studios, who described them as “quite possibly the loudest band I’ve ever worked with, and most definitely the most emotional. And not cry-baby emo. Emotional in all the best of ways."

The Water has played shows and/or toured with with Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Max Tundra, Lake Trout, Big In Japan, and Screen Vinyl Image, and many others. In 2009, The Water played alongside The Dirty Projectors, A Place to Bury Strangers, Wye Oak, Chairlift, and Thrushes at Rufustival, a music festival in Baltimore.

We Are Hex came together in 2008 and moved into a foul Indianapolis neighborhood where they locked themselves away in their studio space, dubbed the Hex Haus. In the spring of 2009, the band released their self-recorded debut full-length, Gloom Bloom, to positive reviews. After a summer of touring, they returned to the Hex Haus to create a new, very different record.

Stripped of the auxiliary instruments and melodies that crowded arrangements on previous releases, the eight tracks on Hail The Goer are provided room to breathe. With delicate flute floating over powerful drums, or dry vocals thrown against a wall of noise, We Are Hex carefully select sonic elements that display their range, without sacrificing the dark, cohesiveness of the record.

We Are Hex will be touring in support of Hail The Goer throughout 2010 and regularly releasing experimental sessions, remixes, video, and new tracks at: hexhaus.blogspot.com and roaringcolonel.com.
Close enough for a short 20 minute drive from the Baltimore or DC beltways. Tucked away far enough to feel as if you've driven out to the countryside. In order to use the facilities at Scotts Cove you must first head over to WSSC and get a $5 day permit or $60 for a year permit. The Brighton Dam Visitors Information Center where these passes can be purchased is located at GPS coordinates (N 39° 11.471' W 077° 0.424'). A map to this point can be found here. At the visitor center you can pick up a map of the reservoir. After you've picked up your passes, head on over to the boat ramp and drop your boat in (no gas motors). We headed out to the right and followed it around to the route 29 over pass making it a 3 hour paddle round trip. Including a stop along the way for a little lunch on the banks with the mighty Blue Heron in our sights. Enjoy some photos of these beautiful birds we followed by clicking on the link below
Drew Stubbs drove in Jay Bruce with a two out single in the 10th to give Cincinnati the win 5-4. There was a pretty amazing looking sky when we got home. A blazing sunset mixed in with a bunch of cool clouds left over from a front that moved through. I thought you might enjoy those as well.
You really leave there feeling like you've just spent the weekend with family. Whether you knew them or not before you got there. Many relationships were made right in our little camp community we had. I'm pretty sure the same can be said all over the grounds. Some folks from Lynchburg VA. arrived soon after us for the academy, we made a connection right away. Soon after that all the academy players started to show up, musical bonds were made almost instantly. It's amazing how music and such an event can bring people together. Some folks from the academy traveled all the way from Alaska to attend. More important to them, they came to see their favorite band Trampled By Turtles. Not only did they get to see the Turtles but they actually jammed with them at their campsite. So this is what I mean when I say relationships are made. It can happen at Del Fest. It does happen at Del Fest

When Thursday arrived, all of the tents started filling in the areas that were once barren and peaceful. People were flooding in like soldiers marching. Radios were buzzing, tent stakes were clinking, drinks were flowing, instruments pickin. As the masses flowed in, I remember thinking two thoughts. "There goes the peace and quiet" and "the party starts now". When 6pm arrived the camps were set up, and the focus shifted into music mode. The Travelin McCourys would start off the festival at 6:35 with special guest Del McCoury and Ronnie Bowman. The place was alive. Food vendors were crankin out food, hula hoops were whirlin, banjos rolling and fiddles fiddling. The occasional freight train blowing it's horn as it rolled through (sometimes at 4 am). The McCourys started it off with a blazing set, welcoming the fans to the 3rd annual Del Fest. Half way through the set, Del called over the microphone for 12 year old fiddler Hanna Livingston of Frostburg MD. to come on up to the stage. They wanted to wish her a happy birthday. Oh yeah and they wanted her to play Orange Blossom Special with them again as she had previously at Del Fest Academy. She did so with command and control only to have Del looking at her with smiles and in disbelief again. At the end the crowd burst into cheers and chants of one more song. The band agreed and she would stay up for a mean version of "Back Up and Push". Ending with the crowd singing her happy birthday. Truly a great moment and probably my favorite moment of the weekend. Mountain Heart and Railroad Earth finished off the first night jamming with special guests Rob and Ronnie McCoury. Setting the tone right for the magic that was about to take place at the fairgrounds for the next three days.

Del Fest is an eclectic mix of musical acts. You have of course bluegrass, you have new grass, you have gospel, soul, funk. Keller Williams and friends played a nearly all Grateful Dead set on Sunday night. You had bands jamming out in the late night hall until almost 4am. Each band getting a special guest from the other bands from throughout the day and of course cameos by Del, Ronnie, and Rob McCoury. You get a little bit of everything with a few surprises thrown in at Del Fest.

Some of my favorites of the weekend were of course all three nights of Del McCoury Band. Mountain Heart was awesome with their Allman Brothers jams and southern rock feel. Greensky Bluegrass, Hillbilly Gypsies were new for me and definitely now on my playlist. Railroad Earth was amazing on the main stage and their late night set was stellar as well. Yonder Mountain String Band definitely put on the best show I've ever seen out of them. The Travelin McCourys with The Lee Boys show was a late night dance party of southern gospel/soul/blues and banjo/mandolin bluegrass all mixed together somehow, it was pretty wild. Cornmeal (one of my favorite bands) and The Bridge (Baltimore's finest funk band) did some serious late night jamming with more cameos from Rob and Ronnie McCoury. I was also blown away by Larry Keel and Natural Bridge, and Steep Canyon Rangers. I was able to see some legendary jams, some legendary musicians and some great moments. Please enjoy the footage I was able to capture. Here are the links to the Del Fest Photo albums.
You will get four days of almost personal training with Rob McCoury (Banjo), Ronnie McCoury (Mandolin), Alan Bartram (stand up bass) and Jason Carter (Fiddle) from the Del McCoury Band and The Travelin McCourys. The guitar teacher was Ronnie Bowman of Nashville TN. Plus a weekend pass to the festival. Beginner to novice are welcome with no worries of being as good or up to speed with other musicians. They really allow you to feel that you are as good as the others and everything is going to be alright even if you mess up. After all every one has to start somewhere, even they did.

Day one (Monday) of the academy was set up camp, chill out for a few hours, meet and greet dinner and beers with the band and students. Hootin and hollerin with them until around midnight or so. The grounds were beautiful, peaceful and quiet with an almost full moon coming over the mountain side. A late night jam took place just to get the engines revved. Everyone was excited for the next day. Here are the photos from Del Fest Academy Day 1

Day Two: Started out with a really neat question and answer session, where students got to ask questions to any of the band members. The questions and answers were quite interesting on a range of different things. The guys explained their instruments where they got them, how long they've had them, how long it took to break them in and so on. Definitely a little something more than who do you like to play with? Or whose your favorite guitar player? It was quite the learning experience already. That was followed by an impromptu jam by the band. After this, the groups split off into their respective instrument categories. After lunch break the groups would split again for the afternoon. Around 4pm is the time everyone was waiting for. This is when the karaoke jams took place. Each of the students if they wanted to, could sign up to play whatever song they want and the teachers would be their backing band. It was really quite something, basically a dream come true for a lot of people. Each of the players did an amazing job. The band was awesome in keeping it going if someone had made a rare mistake. It was just all around fun for everyone. The one performance that stood out the most was 11 year old Hanna Livingston. She came out and blazed on fiddle. Everybody had smiles on their faces and once in a while that look like I don't believe what I'm seeing look. When she was finished the crowd burst into cheers (the loudest of all). The look on Hanna's face was priceless to say the least. If you would like to see video of these great performances they are located in the Del Fest Academy Day 2 album

Day 3: Started out much the same as day 2. They also taught how to do three part harmonies. Ronnie asked his wife Garnet to come up and help. They really just taught all aspects of the band. It was another lesson I was able to take home with me. After this they split off into their groups again and I disappeared for the afternoon until Karaoke time. Check out photos from performances in the Del Fest Academy Day 3 album.

Day 4: The big day. Thursday was the day everyone was waiting for. The gates opened at 12pm, and the festival would start at 7pm. Starting off with a set from the Travelin McCourys. More importantly the academy players would get to do their karaoke with Travelin McCourys but also with Del McCoury himself. All the players were so excited but yet so nervous. This is when I really began to see the pride of this whole thing. When Del got up there, the smile on his face just says it all. It's what it's all about. Del is the man, he's a humble man, he interacts with everyone, he's a leader, he's got his family up there with him, and you can see it in his eyes that he is simply happy and proud to be there. Honestly that's the feeling I got for the rest of the weekend whenever I saw the band up on stage. I saw it in all of them. All of the karaoke performances were again amazing. Everyone got their moment to shine. There were too many to comment on. However I want to mention again 11 year old Hanna. She got up there again and ripped an Orange Blossom Special with serious authority. The look on Del's face during this was definitely one of disbelief. Check out the photos and videos in the Del Fest Academy Day 4 album.

I can't say enough about Del Fest Academy. I was only a guest at the academy this year. I didn't get to participate in any of the real classes, so I tried to take with whatever I could from the parts that I did get to see. It was an extraordinary experience I'll never forget. I learned a tremendous amount just being there. Get to Del fest Academy next year you will not regret it. If the McCourys aren't your musical heroes when you get there they will be when you leave. Thanks to Lisa McCoury, Chris, and the Travelin McCourys for allowing me to cover my first festival from behind the scenes and get some really memorable footage. I am truly grateful for your kindness. I can't wait until next year.
The original plan was to hike the Northwest Branch Trail from Kemp Mill Rd to Rt29 in Silver Spring. I went to The Natural Capital website to research the trail. While browsing I noticed that Brookside was basically across the street from the trail head. I also noticed that the "Wings Of Fancy" butterfly exhibit was going on. Now I am recommending it you.

It took us about two hours to get through the exhibit as well a nice hike on some of the nature trails that surround the park and gardens. I'm sure we did not cover it all. The butterfly exhibit was way better than I expected it to be. The woman told us that if we were to come back in around three weeks we would probably see many more species of butterflies. They were very helpful in explaining the process of the butterflies life cycle and answering any questions. The hike around the nature trails was also very rewarding. We saw many different species of birds, including Baltimore orioles, red wing black birds, belted kingfisher, cardinals, woodpeckers and more. We also saw a black snake, turtles, geese, and much more. You just can't believe a place as beautiful and peaceful could be tucked in the woods in such a densely populated area inside the beltway. We were not to make it to Northwest Branch due to time constraints, but plan on visiting the exhibit again and hiking the branch in the very near future.

Enjoy and Happy Trails

It's official! Soundgarden is back. Scheduled to headline this years Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, and pulling off a last minute show under the guise of Nude Dragons at Showbox last Friday in Seattle. It sounds like it was an awesome show, opening it up with Spoonman and ripping out a few other staples such as Rusty Cage, Outshined, and Black Hole Sun. Take a look at the review posted by Billboard. You can enter from New York avenue (Rt 50) just before Bladensburg rd if you're heading into the city, or Bladensburg road and R st NE.

Happy trails

The National Arboretum 4-11-2010 - Cosmic Vibes - Picasa Web Albums
