Yesterday afternoon, the city of Nome, Alaska, witnessed the end of the 2014 edition of the Iditarod, one of the most dangerous and intense sled dog races.
The winner was American dog musher Dallas Seavey, who broke the record obtained by John Baker, winner of the 2011 competition. Seavey and his dogs crossed the finish line at 4:04 a.m, completing the 1,000-mile race in 8 days, 13 hours, 4 minutes, 19 seconds, only 2 minutes and 22 seconds before Aliy Zirkle. A little bit more than 3 minutes after Dallas, his father, Mitch Seavey, won the third position.

This year, Dallas outdid his own record, which he achieved when he won in 2012. He become the youngest musher to win the Iditarod when he traveled from Willow to Nome in 9 days, 4 hours, 29 minutes and 26 seconds. He is one of the four mushers to ever win two of the toughest competitions on Earth: the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod.

Born on March 4th, 1987, Dallas comes from an Alaskan musher family. The Seaveys have been related to Alaska's most important event since its inception. Dan Seavey, Dallas' grandfather, competed in the first Iditarod race in 1973 as well as in 1974, 1997 and 2012. Mitch Seavey, won the race in 2006 and 2013 at age 53, setting another mark, as he became the oldest champion.

Consequently, the Japanese government ordered a temporary evacuation of the towns next to the nuclear plant. Many residents had to leave their pets and livestock behind thinking that they could come back to their old lives in a matter of days. Keigo is the only person living in the area. He endures radioactive pollution levels unfit for human and animal life, namely at the beginning of the disaster. Although many of his animals died for starvation, the survivors reproduced.

For his part, Keigo survived in order to take care of them. He travels regularly to the closest town to get supplies for himself and visit a pet store that provides him with a portion of the food that he needs to feed his animals.

Many of the people who had to evacuate refused to leave their beloved pets behind and many of them
kept them inside the car in the parking lots near the temporary shelters in Fukushima since at the beginning, only Niigata shelters accepted people and their pets. Mieko Yoshida, a teacher who lost part of her cats in the event organized a campaign to force the government to allow people to rescue or feed their pets or livestock abandoned in the exclusion zone.

Meanwhile, a hero named Keigo Sakamoto became and continues to be the only man in Fukushima.

The marvelous work of Keigo Sakamoto is now supported by numerous animal welfare associations around the world as well as compassionate individuals. All of them contributed to rescuing the more than 1,500 dogs and cats during the first six months after the disaster. Today, they continue to help and care for the affected animals by supporting and working together with local shelters.

Inky understands the value of sharing his life with his elder friend and the situation allowed him to perceive that his friend was at a disadvantage compared to him. Indeed, instincts allowed him to help his weaker pal, first crying for help, until he discovered his own strength and skills.
