Book Review: Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks

This book is a waste of time, a waste of money and a waste of paper.

I got this for Christmas because I am uber geek. I never got into Dungeons & Dragons, and other role playing games but I was curious about them because back in the day, they made the news. I wanted to learn about these games and the hype.

Instead this book is a self-indulgent, rambling, non-coherent account of Ethan Gilsdorf trying to find his RPG roots. This book would have better been a magazine article. It is full of filler, emotional blather that adds nothing to the narrative, and is complete tripe.

It is a waste. Don't buy it.

Ex NHL Player Rick Tocchet Charged In Bahamas

A retired Canadian professional ice hockey player had almost $US20,000 forfeited to the Crown after he pleaded guilty to failing to declare the cash.

Richard Tocchet, 47, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Los Angeles Kings, the Boston Bruins, the Washington Capitals and the Phoenix Coyotes, was arrested at the Lynden Pindling International Airport on December 23 after he told a U.S. Customs border officer that he was not traveling with more than $10,000.

Tocchet was searched and found to have $18,752. He pleaded guilty to charges of making a false declaration and failing to declare when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez.

Gomez let Tocchet off with a warning and ordered the cash seized. Attorney Jomo Campbell represented Tocchet.

In 2006, New Jersey prosecutors charged Tocchet with promoting gambling, money laundering and conspiracy after they accused him of financing a nationwide sports gambling ring based in New Jersey, in which several current NHL players wagered.

On May 25, 2007, Tocchet pleaded guilty to conspiracy and promoting gambling. On August 17 of that year, New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram announced that Tocchet was sentenced to two years probation in exchange for his plea.

Don't Put Your Cantaloupe and Honeydew Melon Seeds in The Garbage

Instead of throwing the seeds from a honeydew melon and cantaloupe in the garbage, I threw them on the lawn to see if the birds would eat them. They don't but the squirrels sure love them. Better than the seeds going to landfill. They need the boost at this early stage in the winter.

Product Review -- Seafoam Trans Tune

This is a product review for Seafoam Trans Tune. Gotta say, I give this two thumbs up and 5 stars.

We had a guest visiting us, with a 10 year old Buick. (2001 Buick Century). He drove about two and half hours to our place, and when he got here, the transmission was shifting hard to the point that he thought that it would tear itself apart. He had a major transmission repair a couple of years ago, and he thought that it had gone again.

After Googling and reading a couple of automotive forums, I came up with a post that said to try SeaFoam (or Sea Foam) Trans Tune. I went to the automotive supply shop and bought a can of it for around $14. After adding about a cup of the stuff (half a pint), the transmission was instantly cured and shifted as smoothly as a powdered baby's bum in a velvet diaper.

I recommend this product wholeheartedly.

Incredible Music Machine

This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between the Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft, Iowa . In other words, farm equipment! It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment, calibration, and tuning before filming this video, but as you can see, it was well worth the effort. It is now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University and is already slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.

Just so you are a little prepared, balls (hundreds. if not thousands. during the performance) come out of a tube, hit an object (remember â€“ farm equipment!) -and sometimes multiple objects - before going back into another tube. Of the all the balls you will see, NOT ONE hits the floor!!

You rarely see a caboose any more on trains. They have been replaced with an electronic box called an ETU or End of Train Unit. Observers used to ride in the caboose and monitor the train. It is now done with electronic sensors. This new railway is not the railway of yore.

I am not sure what this car was used for. It seems to have a shed mounted on a flat car. There is no stove pipe coming from it, so it must be a utility shed or a tool shed. That is probably what it is, since it is connected to a crane car.

Here is another pic of a vintage railway car. This one is a crane mounted on a swivel The plaque on the car says that the crane is good for lifting 100 tons at 16 feet boom length. This car is in the railway museum in Hillsborough.

Hunting in the Bahamas

I got this flyer in my email box notifying me of a meeting to discuss hunting in the Bahamas. Before I saw the poster (pictured above) I wondered what hunters could actually shoot, since there are no large animals in the archipelago of the Bahamas.

Of course, the only possible venue for hunting, is shotgunnery for pigeons. Pictured above, is the tropical species of pigeons that hunters go after. I have never eaten wild pigeon, but one would assume that they would taste like turpentine.

Speaking of tasting like turpentine, an acquaintance of mine goes hunting for raccoons on New Providence Island where Nassau is located. In the native village of Fox Hill on the eastern end of the islands, there are some raccoons living in the wild that have hitched a ride from Florida. They are the mangiest, scrawniest looking raccoons that one would ever want to see, and yet they end up in the cooking pot.

All of my hunting in the Bahamas is underwater.

Vintage Railway Snow Plow

I was totally captivated by this vintage railway snow plow. The curves and lines on it are complex and beautiful. This railway vehicle is totall symmetrically and works the same backwards and forwards. It was made to operate at high speeds, and the real neat thing about it, is that there is a cabin in the interior for an observer.

This car was made to carve a path in remote regions where the snow would be several feet deep, and then fling that snow as far away from the tracks as possible. To me it is a work of art.
