A Steampunk Diva: Lizbit

An admirer of Steampunk, bringing to life characters who seem teleported right from the Victorian era, Canadian model Lizbit surely knows how to put together outfits that are at the same time retro and sexy, elegant and coquettish. I am particularly fond of Steampunk and I discovered her works by pure chance, while doing some research; and when seeing her Lady Mechanika, it was love at first sight with her Steampunk cosplays. I had the pleasure to interview her for an article for Cosplay Gen #4, and she told me a little something about her love for this stylish genre, about her inspiration sources, and the “philosophy” behind her works. I’m very glad I had the chance to talk to her and now I’m delighted to share this interview with you. Apart from Steampunk, she also has tons of other amazing outfits and photos; just check her deviantART page to have a look.
Ruxandra Târcă (editor-in-chief)

Lizbit: I grew up in a small town, where my sister and I used to love playing characters in the forest around our home. My parents have always encouraged us to pursue our interests, and raised us to be strong women. My father is a collector and a tinkerer, he especially likes old radio’s, vehicles and clocks, while my mother is quite the art lover and history buff. I think this is why I am so drawn to Steampunk.

To me, Steampunk embodies a place and time that we accidentally skipped through, or maybe where we will end up… It’s about taking the old, and creating functional pieces, that are as beautiful to look at, as they are useful. Steampunk is about being socially and technologically advanced. Blending Old World ideas of morality and courtesy, while allowing women to be just as, if not more staunch than their male counterparts. Adding to its allure, there is magic and mystery with space aged gizmos.

She was found by local authorities in England, surrounded by corpses, and body parts. Her limbs had been amputated, and replaced with mechanical ones. She has no memory of her former life, so has built herself a new one. She is now a private detective, using her unique limbs and abilities, to solve cases that the police can’t, or wont.

Cosplay Gen: What can you tell us about your other Steampunk outfits? Where did you get your inspiration from when creating them?

Lizbit: I get my inspiration for the costumes from the genre itself. Steampunk characters are the funniest outfits to make, because there is a beautiful mix of antiquated garments, as well as endless possibilities for accessories. My rule of thumb when creating a new character, or outfit, is that it must have at least one piece of leather, metal (jewelry, clocks, rivets etc.) and a lot of layers. I usually start with a corset and bloomers, and go from there. I also keep in mind that the most popular choice of fabric for the era is leather or silk, because those are fabrics that would withstand the journey through time. When making jewelry for a character it’s helpful to base what you’re making on something living, like a beetle, or making something in metal after an accessory that is typically fabric, like a chain link bow tie.

Cosplay Gen: Do you intend to try other Steampunk outfits in the future? Do you consider a Steampunk outfit more special than other cosplay costumes? If yes, in what way?

Lizbit: I am currently working on an original Steampunk project with Ken Nash, and have two other outfits ready for wear.

This particular Steampunk cosplay is very special to me. I love Joe’s character, and wanted to do her justice. His series is full of Steampunk pieces, which were the inspiration for these costumes. The brown outfit was my first attempt at sewing, since a Sailor Pluto costume at age 12. I almost lost an eye and my mind sewing the leather underbust. Thank goodness for YouTube and a lesson from my Love’s mom.

Ken had the goggles, and my partner gave me the gun, which helped tie the whole look together. Neither are a necessity for Steampunk, but they sure are fun to play with.

Steampunk is a very fun theme to cosplay because there are so many options! You get to mix soft and luxurious fabric with very structured articles, which create the posture and feel of the Victorian era. The more layers the better, which allows the cosplayer to have full creative freedom over how much or little they show, and it is a really cool base to start an original character from. What other genre could get away with mixing top hats, corsets, bustle skirts and brass ?

She chose this hobby back in 2006, almost by chance. Already an anime and manga culture aficionado, one day, while going to a drawing course together with her fiancé, they saw a large group of cosplayers and thought that it was very interesting. They decided to follow them and arrived at some convention. She was amazed by what she saw, especially since she could recognize some cosplays from some manga that she was reading, and she decided to get into cosplay too, participating the very same year in a convention wearing a cosplay outfit.

Alongside with her work as a cosplayer, she also started to make plush-toys by herself, thinking that there were many interesting mascots of characters that could complement her cosplays of choice. Her first plush was for the Kanako Urashima cosplay from Love Hina. It was by no means an easy task, and she needed multiple attempts, as she didn’t know how to sew by hand or how to sew clothing. And, moreover, sewing clothing is pretty different from sewing a plush. But she kept improving with each plush she continued to make, reaching a level that allowed her to accept commissions from close friends, and later, when her self-confidence grew, also from other people.

Luxray (Pokemon) // Photo by And Yamasaki
To her, making plushes isn’t a mere hobby, but became a way of life. Her main purpose is, in her own words, to make each plush in such a way that it shows the character spirit even if it is inanimate. I like to do the closest possible to the image and I make each plush with passion. With this hobby I found a talent that I didn’t know I would have. Although she has always been a talented person, she has never thought that someday she would sew plushes and love it so much. As she herself told us, I consider each plush that I sew as a pet that I make and that it’s leaving for a new home.

Until now, for her, the most difficult plush to make was Metabee from Medabots. She needed a whole month to create the pattern and to make the definitive plush, as it was a big one and many cut pieces and details were needed.

Metabee (Metabots) // Photo by And Yamasaki

Witchiko Cosplay

Cosplay-wise, the most difficult costume for her was Momohime from Muramasa the Demon Blade (Oboromuramasa), for which she painted a white fabric to obtain the perfect color and the flowers for the kimono. The costume was made for the Brazilian selective presentation and Brazilian final preliminaries from World Cosplay Summit, and she had quite a short time to finish the cosplay, skit and plushes, thus raising the overall difficulty of the outfit.

Among her future plans as a cosplayer are Shouma Takakura from Mawaru Penguindrum, Madoka from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Panty police version from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Nausicaä from Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä, Edward Elric from Full Metal Alchemist, and Tao Ren from Shaman King.

We are happy to announce the new partnership between Cosplay Gen and Hyper Japan, the UK’s largest J-culture event, with an annual attendance of over 34,000, and boasting a wide selection of authentic Japanese and Japan-inspired exhibitors. From fashion, to food, to film – HYPER JAPAN is a celebration of everything ‘cool’ in modern Japan.

The good news is that in 2012, HYPER JAPAN will be hosting not one, but two international cosplay competitions!

This year, the UK will participate for the first time at World Cosplay Summit, the most famous international cosplay gathering held annually in Nagoya, Japan. One lucky pair will be whisked off to Japan to represent their country at the summit!

As if that wasn’t enough, British cosplayers will also have the chance to enter the European Cosplay Gathering (ECG) – with the grand prize of an all expenses-paid trip to the ECG Grand Final in Paris, France!

The UK selections for both competitions will be held at HYPER JAPAN Spring 2012, taking place from 24-26th February 2012 at Brompton Hall, Earl’s Court, London. Registration opens on January 6th and closes on February 14th.

From our part, aside from receiving copies of Cosplay Gen, the winners of World Cosplay Summit and European Cosplay Gathering preliminaries will be also featured in the next issue of our magazine! Good luck to all the participants!

Apart from the cosplay parades and contests, Hyper Japan has also other interesting highlights, such as Sushi Awards 2012 and Sake Awards 2012, a Natsuko Aso live and many other surprises and important guests! Be sure to attend and have loads of fun!

For more details, including how to enter, be sure to visit HYPER JAPAN Cosplay HQ on their official website and also on Facebook.

Many of you sent us e-mails to ask about the first issue of Cosplay Gen, to see if it’s going to be reprinted or if there are still some copies left, because, as you have probably noticed by now, the pilot issue of this project is already sold out. The concept behind Cosplay Gen is to make each issue a unique, collectible book-like magazine, therefore we won’t reprint the sold-out issues. Nevertheless, in order to thank you all for the support given throughout these almost two years since the launching of Cosplay Gen, we prepared a Holidays surprise for you!

Cosplay Gen #01 is now available free of charge as an online edition, on our Issuu and Calaméo pages. It is perfectly readable online on iPad and iPhone, and you can also download it in PDF format. We hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed working on it. To us it is an issue full of memories, because it was the starting point of this project, the materialization of one of our dreams. Enjoy it and feel free to share it with your friends!

Thank you all for your love and support and keep an eye on us in the future too! We have many surprises prepared for you, our dearest readers, contributors and friends.

Happy Holidays and the best start for 2012!

Episode 17

The forces of evil have unleashed their secret weapon, The Prototype, so Cloud considers that time has come for the backup plan; therefore, she summons a quartet of very skilled youngsters, hoping for victory. Together with her sister, headmistress Kartini (whom I’m sure our friends have really missed) she goes to free the three captives from the enemy’s headquarters, revealing that Nesya had been kidnapped for the sole reason she was the only healer of The Organization. Meanwhile, as the four warriors are defeated one by one, another secret comes to light… If you want to find out what that is, watch Episode 17, The Backup:

Episode 18

Our friends finally win the battle, but all that experience leaves them tired, both physically and mentally. And who wouldn’t be like that if suddenly becomes a superhero in a battle one cannot fully understand? Is it ok to put lives in danger even if the purpose is a good one? Or it should have been better to protect the dear ones, but put the world in danger instead? Neither headmistress Kartini, nor Cloud can answer that. The kids seem to return to their normal lives, but what will Vincent do? Will he accept the role of future leader of The Organization? And, although everything seems peaceful and quiet for now, evil is still lurking in some unknown place. But for now watch how this season ends, in Episode 18: Evil Thwarted:

Cosplay Gen: Everyone has a reason for getting into cosplay, what’s yours?
Seranaide: Answering this question has been harder than I would have thought; in fact there isn’t a real reason why I started cosplay. I was kind of ‘forced’. You know,I lost in a game of cards with a friend… If I’d won he would have dressed up as a woman. And if he’d won I would have had to participate at a convention wearing a cute cosplay. And that was it.

I’d only participated in conventions as a coscaddy before, and wearing a cosplay for the first time was a shock for me! I felt very uncomfortable and embarassed at the beginning. What annoyed me most was that I didn’t even have the time to be with my friends at the convention… But then the costumes I was creating started to be appreciated by people. I’d never been good at anything before then, I felt like a total and complete failure. Seeing for the first time somebody sicerely appreciating my work made me want to continue doing what I was starting to enjoy. The definite decision to proudly continue calling myself a ‘cosplayer’ came when for the first time I watched the wcs 2008 exibition of France. The passion I saw in their eyes overwelmed me so much that I cried. I decided that I would also try my best with that same passion that I saw in the others.

Seranaide as Miyoubi (Alichino) // Photo by Psydis

CG: Why did you choose to portray Versailles’ Hizaki?
Seranaide: I fell in love with Versailles and their music even before I become a cosplayer. I laughed to myself, looking at their clothes: “I wonder who could have sewn those dresses, maybe a god or something?” Hizaki caught my eye more than the others, even though I love Teru’s outfits. Even now I think he is one of the most handsome men I’ve ever seen.

This summer I wanted to try something different. Something that would have represented a new challange after the one of Myoubi. I eventually decided to choose Hizaki, also because my music compilation was full of Versailles’ music.

Seranaide as Hizaki (Versailles, Revenant Choir version) // Photo by Alessandro Guidi

CG: How did you make the costume? Could you share with us the creation process?
Seranaide: It took two weeks and a half to complete HIZAKI’s costume, for a total of more than 200 hours work. This means it took about twelve hours a day! It was very hard finding the right materials. When a cosplay refers to a charcter from anime or manga, the material their clothes are made of are not specified so the cosplayer can choose whatever he likes.. But if you have to create the costume of a character that existes in real life it’s necessary to remain as faithful as possible to the material of the original clothes. For my cosplay I used red velvet and satin, cotton, organza and numerous ornaments. I had to search for a while before finding the right material. When I got to a certain point I realized that the base of the skirt was wrong. At that point, with only two weeks and a half before the convention, I could decide to continue working on it but with the wrong base, or restarting it all from the top and working extra hours. I restarted it all again from the top.

One of the things I probably found the hardest were the details and the finishing touches; Hizaki ‘s got loads! Even the wig is a very important detail: it was made starting with a straight base. It took three hours and a half to make it look like his hair! So… Hizaki’s been a challange in sewing, wig-styling, make-up and details. I don’t think a masochist could have chosen any better.

CG: On what basis do you usually choose the characters you want to cosplay?
Seranaide: I usually choose charcters that look like me but I try to avoid the ones that I don’t like for their personality. My choices normaly move towards young bishonen and dollish female characters. Nevertheless I don’t refuse a challange once in a while.

CG: What can you tell us about the cosplay community in Italy?
Seranaide: Italian cosplay is “various” and “omogeneous” along the whole country.
Cosplayers usualy gather within conventions called Comic fairs, whose frequency is very high in Italy; Sometimes there may be more than three conventions on the same day, but in different parts of Italy. The most important conventios are Lucca Comics (Lucca), Romics (Rome), Cartoomics (Milan), Comicon (Naples). Convention ticket prices range from 7 to 14 euros for the most important conventions, but some conventions are entirely free (the great majority, actually), not to mention that cosplayers get special discounts.

Lucca Comics definitely is Italy’s most important convention: more than 150.000 people attended Lucca Comics this year, and there’s probabily no Italian cosplayer who hasn’t attended this convention at least once: it’s a must for every cosplayer. Despite this and its huge dimensions (the convention takes place in the whole hystorical centre of Lucca, which is like the entire city more or less), Lucca is smaller than than San Diego’s Comicon, but bigger than Tokyo Game Show.

In order to take part in the cosplay contest you have to register online, and the submissions are limited. Two years ago, the submissions for both days (more than 800) were closed in less than five minutes, from 21:00 to 21:07.

Seranaide as Kanon (Umineko no Naku Koro ni) // Photo by Naiyork

CG: Can you share with us some of your future cosplay plans?
Seranaide: I’d like to cosplay as the throne elf from Lineage II and as Insane Black★Rock Shooter from Black★Rock Shooter. These are my goals for now… there are still many projects in my mind, and I hope I’ll achieve them!

The adventures of the Q-Cosushinkai members continue to unfold over other three new episodes of Cosplay: The Series, filled with suspense, thrill and also humor, reveling unexpected and breathtaking situations, which just make you want to find out immediately what happens next. But let’s see what episodes 13, 14 and 15 have in store for us…

Episode 13

Three minutes and a half packed with action and new challenges. After headmistress Kartini‘s disappearance, Vincent decided to keep a low profile, but Sukma informs him one night about the threats fallen upon the school, about the ruthless new headmaster, and about the strange disappearance of the new student who tried to rebel against him. And it seems Agnesya is the next on his list. Is this really the time for Vincent to remain hidden? Wait…. Why does Agnesya‘s mom look like Grell?! Just watch Episode 13: The Last Straw and you’ll surely find out!

Episode 14

Cosplay itself has its own magic. But what if the cosplay materials you use have the magical feature to bestow upon you the powers of the character you cosplay as? In other words, to turn you into a superhero? That would undoubtedly rise a whole army of enemies against you, and this is exactly what happens in the case of Q-Cosushinkai members… Vincent finally returns, though injured, in order to reveal the whole truth to his friends. Also, the school nurse, Rahayu (aka Cloud), headmistress Kartini‘s younger sister, appears and tells the cosplay crew the story of The Organization. What is The Organization? And what is its connection with the previous kidnaps? And what is Cloud doing alongside the enemy?! Too many questions, whose answers are all found in Episode 14: A Mole in The Organization.

Episode 15

“Normal” versus “Freak” – a comparison pretty habitual in the contemporary society. Yet, in the case of the latter, frustration can lead to the worst scenarios, such as the will to punish the first category. And this is how we get some insight into the personal views of Q-Cosushinkai‘s enemy. At the same time, when their friends’ safety is at stake, what other choice could remain for the cosplay club members than to train for the fight? One week at the base of The Organization, and our friends become new persons, ready to confront the enemy, who finally shows up, right at the end of Episode 15: The Initiation!
