Interview: Harrison Krix / Volpin (USA)

Harrison Krix, known better in the costume props making scene as Volpin, started making props just a few years ago when he and his wife wanted to cosplay as Link and Midna from The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess.

Afterwards he started honing his skills with his works seeing immediate positive response from the media and fans. You might’ve already seen his Portal Gun or Big Daddy costume as well as his recently finished, seventeen months project, Guy Manuel’s helmet from Daft Punk. We asked him a few questions about this hobby, some of his current works and his future goals.

A very talented cosplayer, Skye is already known among the cosplay fans for her beautifully portrayed characters. Her characters of choice are mostly sensual and charming women, such as Soah from The Bride of the Water God, Himawari from xxxHolic or Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier.

She always challenges herself with difficult to make dresses and outfits, and the results show her talent not only as a cosplayer, but also as a costume-maker. We asked her a few questions to find out more about how she works and what does cosplay mean to her.

We are pleased to announce that the second issue of Cosplay Gen has entered the DTP stage, and it will be launched in October. Cosplay Gen #2 will now have 100 pages full color and will include interviews and profiles of various cosplayers, such as Kanda Midori, ShanHuang, and Yolkler, a cover story featuring Skye, three extended tutorials, articles on fashion and cosplay photography, and also reviews of important cosplay events, such as Anime Expo and Cosfest IX.

Also, the first 100 copies pre-ordered before the midnight of Thursday, September 30 will come as bonus together with Otaku Magazine Play issue, which includes an EbOY NY city poster and a DVD. For preorders please check our shop page.

All deliveries will begin in the second half of October.

Yukilefay is a very talented cosplayer from Brazil, whose costumes range from series such as Nana and Inuyasha, to games such as Resident Evil and Zelda. She proves a great flexibility of interpretation, depicting both male and female characters with the same degree of skilfullness.

Harajuku Kawaii Experience

This year, Japanese fashion brand 6%DokiDoki celebrates its 15th anniversary. To commemorate fifteen years of kawaii fashion – and to share the brand’s unique look and philosophy with fans abroad – 6%DokiDoki will hold special fashion shows in five cities in four countries on three continents. They are calling the tour the Harajuku Kawaii Experience World Tour 2010!

Comiket 78

On August 13-15, at Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Center) took place one of the most awaited events for the otaku community in Japan and not only: Comiket 78, the summer edition. As far as the various photo galleries show, cosplay was again very well represented, in terms of both diversity, and quality.

Cosplay Gen’s choice for this week is Kaikida, a very versatile Russian cosplayer. As far as her gallery shows, she likes to portray beautiful and feminine characters, such as Paradise Kiss’ Yukari or Euphemia from Code Geass. Remarkable as well is her talented photographer, MrGnob, she herself a cosplayer and costume-maker.

SMASH! 2010

On August 7, in Sydney, Australia, took place another convention for the manga and anime fans: SMASH! According to the official website, the participants could enjoy art competitions, BJD events, art panels and workshops, cosplay events, maid cafe and many other activities. Certainly, loads of fun in there.

Featured Cosplayer of the Week: Tsubaki-chan

Starting today, Cosplay Gen will weekly present one cosplayer or photographer whom we’d like to promote on our website.

For this week, we chose to feature Tsubaki-chan, an Australian cosplayer already known at local conventions, who also coordinates various panels. For her latest cosplay panel, she chose as theme “Cosplay on any budget - Cosplay for Poor Students & Rich Fortunates”, which will be presented at SMASH!, a convention held in Sydney. Tsubaki-chan has a quite wide range of costumes, such as Caska from Berserk, Sakura from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Kadaj from FF VII Advent Children, and Nene Romanova from Bubblegum Crisis – Tokyo 2040.
