I realize our website hasn’t been updated since last year and is hugely in need of a complete overhaul. This is being done as I write, and we (the CdSE team) have been working on 2 new sites in response to how the company has evolved. The main site will continue to focus on event planning for corporate clients, golfers and for groups wanting much more than a beach holiday here on the Costa del Sol.

Our second site will focus on Weddings

We very much hope to launch the 2 sites this week - yes, the same week Ireland will announce its new and very scary budget …. - but we want to step up to the challenge in these times of uncertainty, because we believe in our service. And thank you to all our repeat customers who help us to continue doing what we do and love.

Did you know …. When a national holiday falls on a Tuesday in Spain the whole country takes the Monday off and calls it a “puente” (bridge).
When two national holidays fall in the same week, on a Tuesday and a Thursday, some workers call it an “acqueducto” and take the whole week off!

Andalucía can ‘out party’ just about anywhere else in Spain. There are over 3,000 each year throughout the region. Seville is most famous for its Semana Santa celebrations at Easter but, throughout Andalucía, just about every town and village has something special at this time of the year, including bull runs on Easter Sunday at places like Arcos de la Frontera.

The annual carnival at Cádiz is generally thought to be the most colourful of its kind in Spain but in 2012 everything in this provincial capital will be magnified as it is the 200th anniversary of the signing of the first Spanish constitution here and the preparations have already started.Córdoba in May is home to the ‘Battle of the Flowers’ and their Patio Contests, in which you can roam around private courtyards normally not open to the public, as well as the highly decorative May Crosses, which can also be found in other parts of the region.

Jerez has two notable festivals – the one dedicated to sherry in September and the impressive Horse fair at the end of April, when the world famous animals can be seen in all their pomp and splendour.

In August, in Málaga, there is ten days of celebration of the re-conquest of the city by Isabella and Ferdinand – it’s just one long street party.

Once upon a time, there was a Muslim princess and a Christian knight. They fell in love, but theirs was an impossible romance in times of religious and cultural intolerance. Defending what they felt for each other, they ran away and took refuge in the mountains, but they were chased down. Cornered, they sealed their love in blood by throwing themselves from a rock.

The rock is now known as “Peña de los Enamorados” (Lovers’ Rock), and it can be reached following a trail that starts in Antequera and heads towards Archidona. A trekking tour down this path will also take you to the Viera cave and its beautiful dolmens (single-chamber tombs), the Menga cave (a well-preserved artificial hill), and El Romeral dolmen (perhaps the most modern of the megalithic monuments in the area).

After these natural landmarks, the trail merges with the road until the left exit for Ronda. There you’ll make out the famous rock, aloof and mysterious, like an Indian’s head. Reaching it will be easy, but the final ascent can be tricky, so be cautious!

Thinking of getting married on the Costa del Sol? Consider that Marbella has an unusually pleasant micro climate because it is positioned between sun scorched beaches and the desolate Sierra Blanca mountain range. While the rest of Europe battles wind, rain and snow, Marbella enjoys an average twenty-six days of sunshine each January. Rainfall is scarce and temperatures mild. In fact, the mercury nudges into the early teens throughout the winter months.
No matter if the neighbouring British enclave of Gibraltar is blanketed in drizzle or the waves are pounding Malaga to the West, meterological records show that the sun shines on Marbella for around 320 days a year.
Protected from the worst of biting winter winds by the towering Sierras (mountains) in winter and cooled by sea breezes in the summer, the average annual temperature is an enjoyable 19º C.
Unsurprisingly for a town perched so close to the African coastline, July and August are searingly hot. Although temperatures inland often top 40º C, summer in Marbella hovers around the more bearable 30º C (although this summer of 2008 has also seen temperatures of 40 degrees on the ‘Coast’).

The best known Ronda festival is the ‘Feria Goyesca de Pedro Romero’ which takes place during the first week of September every year. The main attraction of this fiesta is the bullfight which takes place on the first Saturday of the month in the Real Maestranza bullring. Before the bullfight there is a procession of horse drawn carriages through the streets of Ronda with everyone dressed in 18th century Goyesque costumes. The matadors themselves also wear this traditional attire.

The tradition of dressing in these 18th century costumes from the times of the celebrated Spanish painter Francisco de Goya dates back to just 1954 when local bullfighting hero Antonio Ordóñez arranged the first Goyesque festival in honour of the 200th anniversary of Pedro Romero who is generally considered the founder of modern bullfighting. Goya painted a famous portrait of Pedro Romero which is currently on display at the Kimbell Art Foundation in Texas. You’ll see old black and white photos of Antonio Ordóñez for sale in some shops in Ronda in which he’s standing at the bullring with his great friend Ernest Hemingway.

It is a hot July on the Costa del Sol. However golf is a bargain right now at many of the 50+ courses here and leading golf courses have cut their prices to find business where they can. Many include buggies with the price of green fees and riding in a buggy protects from the sun. Standards have risen here with newer, better quality courses such as Santana and Finca Cortesin - just to mention a couple which stand out - which are a pleasure to play. Book a game early in the morning or at twilight (cheapest part of the day) and in case you didn’t know, La Dama de Noche opposite Puerto Banus is floodlit if you wish to play at night!
