Sometimes people look like animals. And that really shouldn’t come as any surprise given the fact that we are, well, animals.

Watching the Emmy Awards last night I couldn’t help but think that some of the outfits worn on the red carpet and at the show would make for some good Halloween costume ideas.

January Jones aka The Peacock. As Betty Draper on Mad Men she nails the role, but every time I’ve seen her out of character in interviews, she seems very aloof – almost shy. I assumed that she just isn’t a big fan of the spotlight. But after the peacock -looking beast of a dress she trotted around in last night, it’s fair to say she looked like a peacock – albeit a Versace peacock – full plume.

Lauren Graham aka The Zebra. She’ll always be a Gilmore girl to me, but in a black and white dress, her yin and yang were all mixed up.

Anna Paquin (or is it now Anna Moyer?) aka The Eagle. Usually tossed around by supernatural beings as Sookie Stackhouse, at the Emmys, Anna looked like she brawled with a BeDazzler – and lost. Oversized shoulder pads make it appear that an eagle has landed on her shoulders and is refusing to leave – though we wish it would.

Sofia Vergara aka The Rattlesnake. This is one venomous bite that most men would take, but there’s no denying that the Modern family star looked like she was about to slither away from the awards show in her gold Carolina Herrera dress. If only I were a small mouse.

5 Halloween Costume Ideas: Dress Like a Quitter

We all dream of the day we get to tell our boss to “take this job and shove it!” Unfortunately, the majority of us need the money our jobs bring in to survive. But thanks to a few real-life weirdos and fictional folks, we get to quit vicariously through them. Here are five ways you can costume up like a quitter.

That Thing You Do: What happens when your band manager tries to get you to sing your hit song in another language? Any musician worth his or her salt knows the answer – you quit! Thant’s exactly what the lead singer from the movie That Thing You Do does. Dress up like The Beatles circa 1964 and run around singing “I…I quit, I quit, I quit.” Finger snapping is optional.

Howard Beale: Played by Oscar-winner Peter Finch in the 1976 movie Network, Howard Beale was the fired TV anchor who shouted, “I’m as mad as Hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” To complete this signature look you need only three things: a long beige overcoat, wet, matted-down hair and a crazy look in your eyes.

Jerry Maguire: The world of sports agents sure ain’t pretty, at least not if you believe Cameron Crowe’s interpretation in Jerry Maguire. After you prepare your quitting speech (apparently two weeks notice was too tame for Jerry), throw on an open collared white button down shirt and knot a loose tie around your neck. Prepare for your imminent meltdown and then search for your “Kwan.”

Steven Slater: The flight attendant turned working class hero is the latest entry into the “quit spectacularly” fraternity – a position held mostly by fictional characters. Even though Steve’s story deflated quicker than an emergency slide, we expect the disgruntled flight attendant look to be a hot Halloween costume in 2010.

Joaquin Phoenix: Grow out that shaggy hair, fit yourself for some dark sunglasses and mumble incoherently and you can look like Joaquin Phoenix, the actor who quit acting to become a rapper. Kind of ironic given that he has a new movie (I’m Still Here) coming out.

The silver screen has inspired thousands of popular Halloween costumes. This year, the gang at Scavenge Inc. have a bunch of costumes available for the very first time – though that doesn’t mean the movies are new. 70s – Saturday Night Fever
Whoever said a movie needs a solid plot to leave its mark apparently never saw Saturday Night Fever. John Travlota transformed into Brooklyn youth Tony Manero – and now you can too. This costume gives you everything you need to wow the ladies and relive the disco decade. Dance lessons not included.

80s – Top Gun Bomber jacket

Pantyhose. I hear they are uncomfortable to wear, but what would I know, I’m a dude. As Halloween approaches, the Scavenge crew is on the hunt for the single most useful item to have in your costume arsenal. Today we humbly submit pantyhose, and its many seasonal uses.

Bald Cap. Since pantyhose come in a multitude of colors, match your skin tone and lose the hair! Cut properly, this sheer material can get your hair under control – and keep you a whole lot cooler.

Bank Robber. We all know that bank robbers usually have small accounts. Perhaps that’s why so many gun slingers choose to their dastardly deed donning pantyhose. You’ll mask many of your features, but your profile (especially if you are a rhinoplasty candidate) will still be visible. Perhaps these egotistical fools like identifying themselves on film?

Tourniquet. What fun would a Halloween costume be if you weren’t bleeding profusely? Let the fake blood run as you attempt to stop the bleeding with a pantyhose-tied tourniquet.

Sling. Broken bone part of your Halloween costume? No problem! Elevate that arm or leg with heavy duty pantyhose.

Prostitute. Despite charging so much money, street walkers never seem to have cash on hand. Is that way they are often portrayed as having runs and rips in their stockings? Slash up a perfectly good set of pantyhose to show the world that you just don’t care.

Tattoos. Does your costume call for a custom tattoo on your arm or leg? But out the Sharpie marker and design your own – on pantyhose! Slide a band up your limbs and from a distance, you’ll be all tatted out.

4 Costumes to Wear While Robbing a Bank

Just yesterday a man robbed a bank in Long Island dressed as Darth Vader. One customer thought it was a joke but Darth wasn’t laughing… In honor of this crazy world of ours, here are four other costumes to consider when robbing your local branch!

Harry Potter
Lets face it, who would really suspect a bespectacled young man in a robe of robbing a bank. Your more likely to help him find his mommy than you would be to hand over your cash! Adding a wand and/or broomstick to your repertoire will only make this costume all the more believable!

Buzz Lightyear
Again, who would suspect a nice guy like Buzz to rob a bank? Customers would probably be so stunned at seeing an astronaut enter the bank that they’d have no idea of your true intentions. The bonus is you won’t even have to carry in a bag with you as I’m sure you can fit plenty of wads of dough right in the spacesuit!

Chewbacca
The great thing about Chewbacca is that you won’t have to state your demands. There would be no “hand over the cash” or “empty the safe”. It would just be a series of low-pitched yelps and the teller would just know right away what were you were asking for.

The Terminator
Imagine your in the bank and you’re filling out a deposit slip and in walks a 6’2 Austrian wearing a leather jacket and shades brandishing a shotgun. Are you really gonna mess with him? I guess if your checkbook reads John Connor you might have a shot. Otherwise, step aside and empty those pockets!

What If Halloween Happened During Summer?

I’ve always wondered what dressing up and going out trick-or-treating would be like in the summer. I remember being younger and having to wear a coat over my costume to go trick or treating and what a bummer it was because people couldn’t see my costume! Below are just a few ideas for some costumes that might be fun if Halloween were celebrated under the warm summer sun.

Mr. Softee/Good Humor Man
Nowadays the guy driving the ice-cream truck is usually your average Joe, probably wearing shorts and a t-shirt. But back in the day when there used to be standards, the Good Humor Man would be in full uniform. There are a few variations but usually he would be wearing a long sleeve white button-down shirt, white pants, black bow tie and/or cross strapped belt, and hat. He was no doubt a figure of authority, but in the best possible way.
Amusement Park Worker
Whether you’re a ride operator, food vendor, ticket taker, or the guy who fixes the video games and vending machines, this is the perfect summer costume! The beauty of it is that pretty much anything goes, the one constant being a name tag of some sort. You can sport a striped apron, a t-shirt that says something like ‘GAMES’, or maybe even one of those belts filled with quarters to give the kiddies change. Go crazy!

Lifeguard
The lifeguard costume really has two major options – you can either go the Baywatch route or the standard route (depending on your physique). Either way, if Halloween were during the summer I bet this would be the most popular costume, especially for those who take extremely good care of their bodies (present company not included). Although if I was in good shape, I’d definitely don the skimpy red bathing suit, whistle, and whatever that red floatation device is called that they used to tote around.

Camp Counselor
This costume is also very simple and similar to the lifeguard one. You’ll definitely need a whistle and probably some sort of lanyard accessory (a bracelet or anklet will do just fine). Cut-off denim shorts and any kind of t-shirt with the proper insignia and you’ll wonder where the group of kids following you came from asking you when lunch is…

Grill Master
Summer can only truly begin when you dust off the old BBQ and start grilling! An especially good costume for the guys, the grill master is also an easy costume to put together. All you need is an apron with a funny saying (Kiss the cook, Hail to the Chef, Grill Sergeant) and some grilling tools (or even a tool-belt!) and a chef’s hat.

I vote we celebrate Halloween twice a year…OK so maybe I just want an excuse to eat more candy…

Spooky Drinks to Serve at a Halloween Party (Adults Only!)

Halloween is a great time to release your innermost wants and desires and it’s the one time of the year where dressing up as someone else is socially acceptable. Of course some of us will have a harder time “getting into character” than others and there’s nothing better than a little alcohol to help you on your way. (Don’t drink and drive!)

Below are a few recipes for some spooky cocktails that will help ease the transition…

Corpse Reviver
1.5 oz of brandy
.5 oz of bitters
1 oz of white Crème de Menthe
*In a mixing glass half-filled with ice cubes, combine all of the ingredients. Stir well. Strain into a cocktail glass.
Zombie
½ oz Bacardi 151 rum
1 oz Pineapple juice
1 oz Orange juice
½ oz Apricot Brandy
1 tsp sugar
2 oz light rum
1 oz dark rum
1 oz lime juice

*Blend all ingredients with ice except Bacardi 151 proof rum. Pour into a Collins glass. Float Bacardi 151 proof rum on top. Garnish with a fruit slice, sprig of mint and a cherry.

Mind Eraser
2 oz of vodka
2 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
2 oz tonic water
*Pour vodka, Kahlua, and tonic water into a rocks or old-fashioned glass. Serve with a straw.

Dark and Stormy
2 oz Gosling’s Black Seal Rum
8 oz Ginger Beer

*Pour rum over ice, add ginger ale, and stir. You can substitute any dark or spiced rum.

Red Devil
1 ½ oz of vodka
1 ½ oz of peach schnapps
1 ½ oz of Southern Comfort Peach Liqueur
1 ½ oz of Sloe Gin
2 oz of triple sec
2 oz of orange juice
1 splash of grenadine syrup

*Mix alcohols into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Add the juice and grenadine, and shake. Serve in a 10-12 oz. glass.

Trick or Treat As Your Favorite Reservoir Dog

Quentin Tarantino burst onto the movie scene in 1992 as the director and writer of Reservoir Dogs. Chock full of memorable lines and graphic scenes, the movie is still widely recognized as a classic today…making it a great generator of costume ideas.

Here are a few select “dog” costumes:

Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi)
Ah, Mr. Pink. Clearly he is the only “professional” out of this group of ragtag misfit criminals. Refusing to tip his waitress simply because it’s become a custom in our culture, it can be argued that Mr. Pink is the only one who has any brains and any principals. He’s there to do a job and won’t let emotions or ego get in his way – and you have to respect him for that.

Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen)
Mr. Blonde seems to have one objective; to have as much fun as he can as a sadistic homicidal maniac! If cutting off someone’s ear while dancing to “Stuck in the Middle with You” is your idea of a good time, then you will find a fast friend in Mr. Blonde.

Joe (Lawrence Tierney)
The undisputed boss of the crew, Lawrence Tierney’s role as Joe introduced the seasoned actor to a whole new generation of fans. No doubt graduating with honors from the school of hard knocks, Joe is a man to either obey or get out of his way. With his gravelly voice and domineering presence, Joe is not to be messed with!

Nice Guy Eddie (Chris Penn)
Far from a ‘nice guy’, Eddie was the bully you probably tried to avoid in high school for fear of getting a wedgie (or worse). Decked out in a jumpsuit and needing to lose about 40 pounds, Eddie is extremely protective of his dad. He’s also good friends with Mr. Blonde, if that gives you any indication of what a ‘nice guy’ he is.

Marvin Nash (the cop)
The wannabe hero of the movie, poor Marvin Nash didn’t know what he was getting into. After being pulled from the trunk, Marvin loses and ear and gets a gasoline shower, all courtesy of Mr. Blonde. If he wasn’t such a whiner, we might actually feel bad for Marvin.
