So, why did we do this...? Why climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in less than 24 hours…?

Not only did we all do this to get fit, to compete in a challenge, but along with 11 other friends, we wanted to raise money for a wonderful charity that has provided support to my family ever since our daughter, Sophie Tomlin, tragically and unexpectedly passed away on 1st March 2013.

Our beautiful precious angel had gone. Although they couldn't save her, the staff and te...

As I am lucky to live in the countryside, when I get home from a fun day at work I like to go for a good walk to wind down and to stretch the dog’s legs as well. Just near my house there is a park called Meadow Park that leads on to some really good walks around the local villages. The walk I chose to do is a five mile circular walk from East Leake starting along the Frank Kirk Way in Meadow Park.

The Frank Kirk Way is a new footpath first dedicated just two years ago and officially ope...

How to pick the right portable charger?

Hi Guys,

We recently did some staff training on our portable chargers so I thought I would share some information on how to pick the right charger for your needs!

So... How do you work out the right device?

Battery capacity is how much power a device holds (mAh) Battery output is how much power is put out per hour (mA)

So to work out how many charges a charger will do for a phone you divide the charger’s capacity by the phone’s capacity.

Exampl...

I’ve always found winter conditions are the trickiest to dress for. The weather in the UK is a fickle beast; you need to be prepared for sudden changes in conditions but you don’t want to pack so much gear in your bag that you don’t end up using most of it. Time out on the hill is really the only way to find what gear works best for you. I’ve found that a good layering system is the key - several versatile layers are always better than one when there are likely to be chan...

Following an exceptional week of crisp, cold weather, the Lakes have seen some fantastic winter conditions. High winds however have demanded appropriate dress for some extremes of temperature & careful consideration towards route selection.

On Saturday a straight-forward circular walk around Red Screes saw reduced visibility & plenty of spin-drift in your face!

I've been a BIG fan of Yaktrax for years now so decided recently to invest in a pair of Yaktrax Run. My Standard Yaktax have been great for winter dog walking and hill days when you still want to be able to get out without the risk of falling over or getting 'ice bound' but crampons seem like overkill.

So, with winter settling beautifully and with me still wanting to get out and 'let it go' in the hills, the standard yaktrax needed to be upgraded to a pair of the Yaktrax r...

‘The Shadow Hoody is a technical fleece which works well as an outer and mid layer year round. It’s stretch and breathability makes it ideal for winter running, climbing, biking and hiking, and the fact that it cuts out the majority of the wind and sheds off a shower without issue, makes it a great piece to have in the arsenal.’

This week, Becky reviews the Scarpa Ranger walking boots.

As an expert boot fitter, I often find it difficult to persuade people round to trying the Scarpa Rangers. Being considerably more bulky and heavier than a lot of the other leather boots available, I find most people hold them once and instantly dismiss them due to their weight and stature. I can understand why, but, currently owning a pair myself, I do think they are often unfairly disregarded.

I’ve not been easy on my pair o...

One of my favourite jackets is the Haglofs Rando Barrier. This is a hybrid insulated jacket (that’s a cross between a stretchy fleece, in the areas you need to move & insulation where you want additional warmth), which works well in lots of different temperatures. The best features are the fitted hood, 3 practical pockets (hands & chest), pertex outer & thumb loops to keep your hands warm.

El Cap has been 'Free Climbed' for the first time by Kevin Jorgeson, 30, and Tommy Caldwell, 36. I'm sure many of you are sat saying that it has been climbed before, so why is this such headline news? The answer is simple. I've had my Kestrel for about 4 years now, and I can honestly say it’s the best rucksack I’ve ever owned. At 48 litres, it’s more of a large ramblesack than a daysack or expedition bag, but the Kestrel also comes in 28, 38, 58, and 68 litre sizes, so there’s one to cover all eventualities.

I love working in outdoor education. There are a few different routes. Some take apprenticeships or even degree courses, some just start as bank worker trainee’s. Which was what I did, I had a background in youth work and Psychology and wanted to get some experience working with people. I ended up staying six years. I won’t lie and say I loved every minute of it, but looking back it was definitely one of the best times of ...

Round 2 of the Project climbing centres - winter takes all boulder series.

As ever the competition offered 30 new and interesting problems set at beginner to intermediate level. Each individual hold was given a points value and your final score on the problem dictated by the last hold you held under control. Maximum points of 50 points per problem and a so a maximum score of 1500.

All the problems again were in a very fun an accessible style so a great introduction for anyone who has never...

Rising above the tiny hamlet of Croesor, Cnicht takes on the guise of an alpine giant in its wintry coat of snow and ice - the mountain has even been dubbed the ‘Matterhorn of Wales.’

Its craggy outline is an impressive sight, but despite its resemblance to the alpine icon, you’ll be glad to know that climbing Cnicht isn’t such a daunting proposition. Combined with other summits in the Moelwynion range, it makes a great day’s hill walking and for me was a welcome...

Boulder comps are amazing but given the choice between climbing indoors and spending the week in the forest bouldering in France what would you do? Thought so.

So Blokfest round 2 and my first blokfest of the season. The blokfest series runs until March and has 6 rounds in total with your best 5 rounds going forward to make your final score. This means, if like me you happe...

It’s the Cotswold Mountain Academy – Autumn 2014. Four days spent in the high and rocky mountains of North Wales. This is a land of steep sided mountains, mist covered buttresses and small jewel like lakes. This is a land of legend and myth and one that continues to have a strong influence on my interest in the outdoors.

The aim of the Academy was to test out RAB and Lowe Alpine kit out on the Hill, and then share our individual experien...

The Mountain Equipment Kongur jacket has been rigorously tried and tested, and consistently voted as one of the best winter mountain jackets on the market. I have owned one for over 5 years now and it’s still as waterproof as the day I got it, thanks to the endless amounts of Nikwax Tech Wash I have used to maintain it over the years.

This week, team member Tom Gardner reviews the Rab Baltoro Gloves:

As a climber I need gloves with dexterity, warmth, a good grippy palm, durability, breathability... the list goes on, and the Rab Baltoro gloves tick a lot of boxes for an all-round winter climbing glove. They're not waterproof, and they're not the warmest winter gloves on the market; however, if I was to sum up these gloves in one word, it would be "reliable".
It's Friday night, and a long drive north eventually brought us into the mountains. But this is Scotland, sunny skies are a luxury, and with Dave's sharp navigation, some low set cloud might actually work in our favour over the next few days.

Saturday morning didn't disappoint. The drizzle on the way to the start set ...

Hill Academy Patterdale

A great few days spent around Patterdale in the Lakes for Cotswold's Hill Academy. This was a great chance to try some new gear out, some of which wouldn't have been my first choice, so good to have a nudge. So our Cotswold band of staff from across the stores gathered on Thursday 26 June. As always, it was lovely to see old faces from earlier training events and catch up, even if Scott was camouflaged by his newly sprung beard. Gear was alloted for us to trial and suppliers ha...

Last week I spent 3 days in the Lake District Patterdale attending the Hill Walking academy. The course was a chance to test out some gear from Ayacucho, Petzl, Mountain Equipment, Vango, Primus, Brunton and Katadyn. With weather ranging from incredibly hot and sunny to damp and windy, it really gave us a chance to test out the Mountain equipment Aeon and Vector jackets.

We started Thursday the 26th with a talk from mark the training advisor about the course and so we could all find out what ...

How to Select the Perfect Pack for your City Break

Selecting the right bag for your city break is an important decision. Unlike large and technical travelling rucksacks, the luggage that is appropriate for a city break is specifically designed with urban travel in mind. It can be a bit more style conscious, tucks cleanly into overhead storage space and as many can be rolled across the ground, a lot easier to move.

It is quite likely that you will have one large bag for the bulk of your items and then use a smaller bag for the day time. ...

Salomon XA Pro 3D review by Hazel

A classic shoe re worked…how different can it be?

Well having worn them to work and around town, quite different it seems. With a lower volume tongue pocket, they sit much neater. Having added a part stretch (neoprene) wrap from the tongue, they hold the foot really well and have lots of support.

Great for being on my feet all day, thanks Salomon. By Hazel
