She dumped six inches of snow on the ground here in good ole Illinois. Some Spring weather huh? So, I stared out the morning on the treadmill and just closed the curtains to the white curse. (Sounds so negative.) I love snow, just not in March.
I spent the better part of the day anxiously awaiting this post. I got up the courage to enter my dining room in Amy's First Project of the Year Party and I knew yesterday she was announcing the finalists. I told myself not to get my hopes up. Yet, when she finally put the post up last night, I held my breath as I scrolled down. Sure enough, there was my dining room, in the final 14. I was thrilled.

Out of the 14 finalists, 6 bloggers will be chosen to have their entry in Cottages and Bungalows Magazine. You can imagine my excitement!
There were many talented entries, which meant a lot of competition – 119 entries in all. I’m honored to be one of the final 14. So a special thank you to Amy and the Cottages and Bungalows Magazine team for hosting this great party and for a chance to have my room in a magazine! I. AM. SO. EXCITED.
Now, if I can just find a way to sleep between now and Friday when the 6 winners are announced.

<img alt="CottageonRosewood Dining Room 2" border="0" height="484" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-_3ZZsG7OFc8/UVHlP6TM4hI/AAAAAAAABHU/mOw5QK-v2zY/CottageonRosewood%252520Dining%252520Room%2525202_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px;

(Source)

I have been anxious to try it, but no matter how hard I try I cannot justify the price. Not when you have to pay additionally for shipping and my favorite flat latex paint with built-in primer costs about $14 a quart at our local Ace Hardware with our contractor discount.

Last year, while set up at the flea market, I noticed a vendor that was selling the ASCP for a slight discount. I figured if I could get it for a bit less without having to pay shipping I would give it a go. That it was nearly six months ago and wouldn’t you have thought I could complete at least one project by now? (I haven’t) I started a table, but have not had the time or motivation to finish it.

But with flea market season fast approaching, I am determined to give this paint a chance. There are many inspiring images out there and I feel myself getting the itch. I’ve been lucky so far in guessing what local folks will buy, while still painting pieces I can be proud of. I tend to paint them a bit brighter than I typically use in my own house, but I love how they turn out.

So, since I’m getting ready to get started on some new furniture pieces for this year’s shows, I decided to peruse the black hole of a time sucker, commonly known as Pinterest, for some inspiration. Then I came across a couple of images and then a blog of a fellow furniture painter. I loved some of her work and spent quite a bit of time on her site. It didn’t take long to see she was using Cece Caldwells Chalk Paint, a less expensive brand.

Not only that, I kind of liked the color choices a bit more.

As usual, one blog led to another and I found this image too. Love that green!! I realize this one wasn’t painted with chalk paint, but I purchased Antibes Green at the flea market and I am using this image as inspiration for a piece. I have a small bar cart in mind and a similar finish would give it a bit more style.

(Source)

Anyway, about $150 later, I ordered several paints and a tub of clear wax and I’m hoping it’s money well spent. I have seen reviews on Cece Caldwells' Paint and it seems to be similar to ASCP. My fingers are crossed.

Have you tried either paint, or perhaps, both? Share your thoughts and feedback in the comments please. I’d love to hear them.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Hope your day is full of love. We aren’t too big on Valentines for each other but are always willing to buy candy for the kiddos. I believe we should share love all year long and not devote just one day.

We went to a visitation last night for a friend we grew up with. He passed unexpectedly of a heart attack. He was only 36 years young. Life is short. I am determined to keep blogging. Mostly, I want to keep my own journal about my home. When we bought this house 5 years ago, I hated it. The hubs convinced me that despite the ugly duckling that it was, I could easily make it me. It wasn’t that I couldn’t see the potential. I didn’t want to see the potential. I have always wanted a big farm house in the country with a couple of acres where Brandon can ride his dirt bikes and Carson can chase chickens.
At the time, Carson wasn’t even born, but my oldest daughter and my nephew were both living with us. We were a household of 5 – 2 of whom were teenagers and in need of their own space. We lived in a 4 bedroom but it was a very small 4 bedroom. The common areas consisted of one small living room and an eat-in kitchen (if you could call it that). So hubs came across our current house. A 5 bedroom ranch with a living room and a family room and an attached garage (previously we had no garage).

<img alt="IMG_0613" border="0" height="459" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-e3vzK4HoZF4/URwC_yt6O7I/AAAAAAAABEM/uSRXw8u-qwk/IMG_0613_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; Little by little, we’ve made it our home. Fast-forward 5 years and we are looking to move again. The biggest reason is the daily drive for the hubs and kiddos – 36 miles one way to school. Though we’ve been talking about it for a couple years, this year, we are determined to Git R Done.

But let’s go back for a minute. Originally, the house had a tiny kitchen, tiny dining room and a tiny bedroom all centrally located smack dab in the middle of the house. We knocked out one wall when we moved in combining the kitchen and former dining room into one large kitchen. But the house still felt cramped.

<img alt="IMG_1428" border="0" height="431" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-hiTa_dPnomI/URwDE3v02yI/AAAAAAAABFM/RhrB7f1uq-A/IMG_1428_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px;
Seriously, that took me a couple years of convincing. But it finally worked.

<img alt="232323232-fp53436-nu=32-4-45--7;5-WSNRCG=3238437746-;;nu0mrj" border="0" height="484" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ERp2GA302JM/URwDFwByP5I/AAAAAAAABFc/nf6IZ51H-0I/232323232fp53436nu3244575WSNRCG32384%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; And many items stayed in the plan. I didn’t end up using the lights. Since we plan to sell, I didn’t want to include the lights with the house and am keeping them for the next renovation/adventure. I also changed my mind on the rug. If you are looking for some design advice, then this is your gal. She shares decorating eye candy on her blog and sells Dash and Albert Rugs in her shop. She helped me choose the most perfect one. I adore her and highly recommend her if you are in the market for a new rug. (Currently she’s running a sale through February 28th with 10% off)
<img alt="CottageonRosewood Dining Room 2" border="0" height="484" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-S0t-Tn_-kAw/URwDHljcwFI/AAAAAAAABFs/6QqPPKtV6IU/CottageonRosewoodDiningRoom2_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; The easiest (and my personal favorite) thing to do was to add pine planking to the ceiling. We simply installed it and I painted it white (with a brush after it was installed).

<img alt="IMG_0615" border="0" height="328" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Jfai6vVyQig/URwDJKBn4cI/AAAAAAAABF8/5sUQoptqK5A/IMG_0615_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; I say all the time, it’s like it breathes now.
<img alt="IMG_0616" border="0" height="484" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-bZVWL2U6dMk/URwDKUXWBwI/AAAAAAAABGM/0T11OF0FjM0/IMG_0616_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; But by painting the walls and ceiling white, I think it made it much brighter and happier. I love the lights at night because it actually feels like a quaint little restaurant.

<img alt="IMG_0606" border="0" height="484" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Vi9KN7XC8ZE/URwDMnxCsrI/AAAAAAAABGs/pZZe4nhI4Zw/IMG_0606_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; I sold my old dining chairs (which I only paid $100 for) for $575, so I still came out ahead. The yellow chairs are from an antique store in a neighboring state. The cabinets were only $50 each from an old friend. The table was gifted to me by my wonderful boss. That awesome old sign used to hang in the town where we currently live. I thought it was a joke that there was once a barber shop/donut shop, but someone once thought that was a good idea – for real! I found it in an old barn and the owner sold it to me for a mere $50. Hiding in the back corner is a ginormous letter K. It formerly hung on the outside of the local Dodge dealership. I scored it for $65 when new owners bought them out. And finally, the lights were scored on ebay! So grand total spent on this room came in at about $650 (subtracting the profit I made on the chairs).
<span style="color: blue; It’s “wall art”. As in anything you hang on the dang wall. Oh I frequently pin gallery walls. Cause to be honest, those are my favorite. I adore them. I even got up the nerve to create one once. One reason I seem to never follow through with the “after” rooms are the bare walls.

Last night I was quite determined to find a way to hang some things – any-things really – on the walls. I even went on a pinning frenzy. Determined to find some inspiration. And I found plenty of inspiration. The problem is fear. Paralyzing fear. Not sure why. I know it isn’t because I am scared to put holes in the walls. No, I know that’s an easy fix. Perhaps, it is the Libra coming out in me. You know, the indecisive one.

But I think I’ve begun to see a theme in my favorite pins. Mixed up frames. A looser less structured arrangement. Those get me the most excited.

<img style="display: block; float: none; I think I tend to like black and white photos/art with some typography. Though, it seems when I try sometimes, things tend to look, well, cheesy. Forced. Not quite as loosey goosey as these examples. I have recently begun amassing frames. Black, white, gold and even OLD. I have committed myself to facing the fear of hanging things on the wall and I am going to force myself out of my comfort zone and do something for myself. This is my year after all.

As if I haven’t seen enough inspiration link up some of your favorite gallery walls in the comments so I can see what inspires you. I flipped it over and let out a sigh of relief, you know when you realize the screen did not crack? Well, unfortunately just because it isn’t cracked doesn’t mean it’s gonna work.

I cannot tell you how attached to that phone I was. It took me 2 weeks to finally decide to upgrade to an iphone 5 and I almost cried when I placed the order. I was so used to Android, but my kids convinced me to make the switch. Generally, I love change. Not so much in the technology department.

You may wonder what the point of my rambling is. Well the point is, I had take many pictures of Amanda’s room at it’s worst. When the clothes were strewn from one end to the other. Shoes and jewelry everywhere in sight. Yet, I never managed to download or save any of them anywhere. But, if you’ve seen hoarders, you can imagine the room 15 year old who saves everything.

I saw this image and loved the colors and they became the inspiration for her room.

Source

Then I saw this image which led me to an idea.

Source

Built-ins but with open storage on top and her bed turned and built right in with storage underneath.

Keep in mind, we plan to move, sooner rather than later. We would like to live closer to the kiddos school to make life easier for all of us. We’re thinking half-way between my work and their school ought to do the trick. But that’s a post for another day.

Thankfully, I have a very skilled father and a hubby who is eager and willing to learn. Oh and it doesn’t hurt that he possess plenty of carpentry skills, but the fine millwright type work – that’s where he lacks experience.

So I devised a plan using materials we already owned. Two 24 inch cabinet bases with drawers (removed from a rehab). They were in pretty good shape but would need to be painted (read: easy fix.) We had some cabinet grade plywood. We would need to purchase 2 more sheets, but considering that would be the bulk of the money spent for built-ins, I was all for it.

My dad and hubby got to work and over 2 long weekends, they managed to get the majority of the work done. We painted the walls and painted what cabinets they managed to swear their way through.

They finished the install this weekend and though we still have to paint the top bridge that connects the book cases on either side of her bed, caulk and accessorize – I’m seeing some vast improvements in her room flows
Oh and that yellow wire hanging down is electrical wire for the sconces I had them mount on each side of the bookcases.

I’m so excited for my vision to come to life. Initially, I had refused to paint her walls. I finally caved and painted them a dark navy, almost black. I scored some serious bargains on the curtain fabric and then my seamstress gave me one heck of a deal to make them. We have quite a bit more work to do. As I look at this picture, I see just how many things I left out on my list up there.

But to see my daughter so happy makes it so worth the work. Oh and the price tag for the built-ins, including the lights I managed to score on ebay – a whopping $142. So grateful for free labor!

Myself

I keep seeing posts from other bloggers announcing their word of the year. I have one picked out and at first, I didn’t plan to share. I wasn’t sure how it would be received, but I’m striving for honesty.

This year has been brutal, I’m not gonna lie (note I just noted my policy for honesty). We have had more ups and down and more work than we bargained for. We did however, figure out what works for us and what doesn’t. We overhauled two houses after evicting tenants. The kids’ schedules were the craziest they’ve been. I became a grandma in October and I jumped into the flea market scene and made 5 out of the 6 shows I had planned to attend. Not only that, but I started taking some on some photo shoots; mostly for family and friends.

Whew, that doesn’t include the fact that I work a full-time job in a busy law office. So needless to say, that is where I came up with my word of the year. Myself. We are all guilty of failing to recognize our own needs sometimes. We are so busy being mamas and caring for our babies, we forget to take care of ourselves. I started the year out strong, regularly attending boot camp classes and eating healthy 90% of the time. Unfortunately, my gym closed in June and I have not exercised regularly since.

So this year, I am more determined than ever to take some time for me. Not all selfish time, but also more time devoted to giving of myself and finding more time to focus on my spirituality. I have neglected those places more than I care to admit and I’m worse for the wear because of it. I’m only human and born to make mistakes (name that tune!). And make mistakes do I ever. I feel like I have been so focused on working (we really only had 2 days off this year before December) that I failed to live.

Failed to live a more Christ-like life. Failed to enjoy my kids as much as I should. Even failed to see my grandson as much as possible.

So I’ve decided to make some changes. First and foremost, more focus on God, church and prayer. I am going to attempt to read the entire Bible this year from Genesis to Revelations and I’m praying God shows me the way to make effective changes within myself. Changes that will bring me closer to Him and more in line with who I want to be.

I have found myself so busy this year comparing my life to the lives of others, I failed to find joy when it was smack dab under my nose. I failed to write blog posts because I feared what someone might think of my project. I even found myself buying things that didn’t bring me joy, but I saw them on a blog and somehow thought I would be as happy as that blogger if I had that pillow. Ouch, this hurts to admit, but like I said, I’m all about honesty.

My oldest daughter will be 23 in May. My heart aches when I look at my kids. My baby turned 3. Amanda is in high school and Brandon will be confirmed in April and graduate 8th grade in May.

I want to be a better role model to my kids. I want them to know I have lived my life with no regrets and little fear.

I myself want to know that.

Today marks the first time I have posted a picture of myself on my blog (sidebar). Why you might ask? Not for issues of privacy as one might initially think. Oh no, for fear that someone would judge me based upon my picture. How silly is that? I’m a person too. Equal to those around me. Flawed and a sinner, but no better, no worse.

This is the year I will conquer fears. I will name them, look them in the eye and show them that I’m more powerful than they are.

I want to take more risks. Step out of my comfort zone. Dedicate myself more to being a better wife, mom, grandma, daughter and sister. I want to find ways to share in the joy of marriage with my hubby. We haven’t had a date night in probably 4 years. True story. That can’t be good for a marriage.

Without sharing too much, I was raised by an abusive mother. I have resisted ever mentioning it here because I feared that many of you would look down on me. I am not mentioning it for pity, simply as a way for you to see my perspective - my view. I have realized through many years of therapy (yes, I’m proud to have a therapist) that nothing about that situation was my fault. She did however plant the seeds of self-doubt in my head and she fed and watered them regularly. She was physically and verbally abusive. Its the words that stung the most. The words stuck with me. I measured myself in her eyes for years. Time wasted. I allowed myself to be robbed of joy.

It was difficult to forgive her, but once I did, I was relieved. I was also free. While I had hoped it would make me instantly stronger and in some ways it did, in some ways it didn’t. I still struggle to overcome the damage, I just no longer hate her for it.

I have God to thank for that. I used to blame God and even for a short time, sort of turned my back on him. Many years later, circumstances led to us transferring our school age kiddos from public school to parochial school. Best. Decision. Ever. Not only did they benefit from smaller classrooms, more dedicated teachers (in my opinion), daily prayer and weekly mass, it led me back to church. A place I had avoided for a long, long time.

After their first year, they began to point out my hypocrisy in sending them but not attending church or even reading my Bible. Let me tell you how deep my soul searching was. I began to go back to church. I was baptized and a year later, Amanda and Brandon were baptized the day before Amanda’s 13th birthday. What a wonderful change for the better. We live 45 minutes from our church and sometimes, it’s a struggle to make it. But we are devoted to trying.

So many things have changed for us over the last 5 years. My oldest moved out and started a family of her own, giving me one of the greatest joys of my life, my grandson. The middle kids transferred schools. We added Carson to our family. And we are growing into our church family.

Another huge change is waiting in the wings. My husband and the kiddos make the 45 minute trek every day to work and school and then do it at night. Its even worse when they have sports, math team or match points. It makes for a very long week for everyone. I put 10,000 miles on my car in less than six months. We have made the difficult choice to put our house on the market sometime this year. We have put our heart and souls into and so far, we have dipped our toes into the housing market and are having no luck. Maybe I’m being picky. Maybe deep down, I’m not ready for anymore change. Maybe it’s both.

I have vowed to be patient with myself and accept that I will struggle with this change. But I am more determined than ever to step out of my comfort zone and make some changes.

I’m currently planning a renovation of Amanda’s bedroom that is seriously lacking in adequate storage. If all goes as planned, we will come in at around $100 for some major changes. I want to make it more organized and sellable. I’m trying to focus my energy in positive places.

I am currently, and hope to continue, taking an online photography course. I want to blog more. I want to speak from my heart. Share the good and the bad and not feel fear. I want to be closer to God than ever have been before. I want to make more time for my dad in my life. And I really, really wanna go on a date with my hubby. Is that to much to want for myself?

Oliver

Please meet my grandson….

Halloween Lovelies

If you are looking to host a Halloween Party, it seems The Raven themed parties never grow old, or should I say, grow old Nevermore Lenore. I wear my heart on my sleeve and it is a rare occasion to wonder what I’m thinking. Lately, I find myself missing blogging. Usually, I make my rounds and read all the good reads, but even that lately has become something I have to find time to do.

It seems like when I look back on posts, I talk so much about being busy and working another project. And each time I do, in my head, I plan for a break…soon. Yet, I can’t seem to find the time to slow down or photograph a finished project. Uggh.

Yesterday, I really realized just how fast this year is flying by. It was the 4th of July? Are you kidding me? Seriously, where did the time go?

(Independence Day Parade ~ 2012)

I guess when I decided to add the title of flea market vendor to my resume, I should have known it would take up a lot more of my time. What I didn’t expect was my sister’s rental house to become vacant. Despite the fact that I inherited my dad’s love of DIY, she did not. So she is rather inexperienced in a lot of things “renovation” and called upon us to help her out.

<img title="IMG_5664" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;

So, we have all pitched in as a family. Which has actually turned out to be even more fun than I imagined. She gave me the green light to pretty much pick whatever I wanted/could work into a small budget (read: inexpensive cause it’s a rental).

We have patched and painted walls. Torn up carpet and painted cabinets. We have picked a new countertop, sink, faucet and flooring for the kitchen. The ceiling was in really bad shape - nothing a little pine planking can’t hide. So, despite the never ending to-do-list, we are enjoying remodeling on someone else’s buck.

Hopefully, I will find myself without a paint brush in hand soon to show you some finished projects. In the meantime, I guess we will get back to work!

<img title="IMG_5668" style="border-right: 0px; Though the original page is old and worn, the message is still there. Sometimes, when life is challenging and I feel like nothing is going my way, I reflect on this poem. It really motivates me and inspires me to keep on trying, and trying, and trying. And most importantly, to make no excuses. I cannot compare myself to others or be envious. I must pave my own way and take risks. Dare to dream and dream big.
EVER!

<img title="IMAG0051" style="border-right: 0px;

(Ya, that’s the unfinished dining room that I swear I will share someday soon!)

But by last week, I was in full blown panic-mode. I was sure I was making a mistake. I doubted I had enough stuff. Doubted I would sell anything and almost convinced myself to back out. But one quick email sharing my distress and one phone call later and Annie assured me that I would do just fine. She gave me a few tips and quick suggestions, but most importantly, she gave me the morale boost I needed to follow through.

By Friday night we had pretty much loaded everything into a trailer borrowed from my wonderful father-in-law and I made my best efforts to sleep in order to be well-rested for Saturday.

And this is where things go a little bit crazy.

Ya see, my wonderful man-child Brandon decided he needed to retrieve an item from my office. And the hubs, being the kind person he is decided to sneak my work keys and the partners in crime headed out to pick up that item – did I mention it was absolutely non-essential and he could have waited until morning.

Well, turns out, what started out as an innocent quick trip didn’t end that way. It became apparent when we were piling in the truck to head to my office to pick up last minute items I needed (tables to hold my wares), I noticed the look of horror on my honey’s face. Turns out my keys were sitting on my desk, of my locked office, along with my directions to the Market and our hotel (confirmation included!).

So after an hour of searching the house, which has been woefully neglected since I began what can only be described as full-on-flea-market-mode, we were finally able to get in my office and we were soon on our way.

Once we arrived it seemed like smooth sailing. We unloaded the truck and trailer and I was pleasantly surprised when people were buying items from the trailer before it was even unloaded. It was a good first day and we went straight hotel for some R&R…dun dun dun, cue the horror music. Ya see, hubs swore there was NO chance of rain. He assured me that I could leave my stuff out and promised I would have no problem. And darn that little old radar. Only darn wasn’t the word I was using in my head when I was all tucked in bed and caught lightning out of the corner of my eye. I sat there in shock for what seemed like forever, hoping it would pass and doing a mental inventory of what might not withstand the rain, when hubby decided we would at least try to go over there and see if we could get in, which actually redeemed him! Luckily we did and 3 of us were able to load up the things I worried the most about and dry them. The only casualties were one adorable night stand, which for some reason the paint began peeling from and our canopy.

I am so grateful for my family. The support they showed me this weekend was incredible. Despite the few hiccups and Brandon moving furniture in the pouring down rain in the only spare clothes he had. I couldn’t have done it without them. Even the cashier.

<img title="IMAG0074" style="border-right: 0px;
All in all, it was one of the best experiences of my life and the kiddos and the hubby even said it felt like a mini-vacay, so next month, we are going back. It didn’t hurt that I sold double my goal either. I will leave you with some pix from my space as were were unloading and setting it up (for the second time). I didn’t bring my camera but instead relied on my phone. Next time, I think the camera will make the trek too. See more pictures from the market here. I cannot figure out where time has gone, by my second born princess has her 8th grade awards dinner tonight and she has both graduation and her final dance recital on Sunday. This past Friday night I watched her be confirmed and it was a very emotional time (she’s the one on the right). To see her grow in her faith is such a privilege.

<img title="IMG_1484" style="border-right: 0px;
I remember holding her for the first time. The most beautiful baby girl. Holding her tiny body in my arms. Inhaling her sweet smell. Love at first sight doesn’t even do it justice. She has become such a wonderful young lady. We are so close and I am so lucky. I have only a few short years left with her still home with me.

Her oldest friend begins drivers ed at the end of this month. I know I just blinked and she turned 14. I know we all say this and we all live this feeling, but somehow, it doesn’t seem to make it any easier.

This year has brought about a tremendous amount of change for us. As usual, we are so busy with life that it is going by faster than a speeding bullet. I am overwhelmed with pride and joy for my kiddos. Miss Amanda has worked her tail off this year and it has paid off. She has earned enough scholarships to cover 90% of her high school tuition. She is mature beyond her years and I am so very blessed to call her my daughter. So tonight we will celebrate her accomplishments.

<img title="IMG_0936" style="border-right: 0px;

She will begin her freshman year in the fall. Oh how I remember my first day of high school. Butterflies in the belly. Wondering how much different it will be from junior high. She started in public school and we decided when she was in 6th grade to transfer her to a small private school. She was so scared those first few days, but it didn’t take her long to come out of her shell and truly blossom. She has made some wonderful friends along the way. With graduation comes change. Some of her classmates will attend different schools in the fall and there are a handful that will attend the same high school as her. So she is in for an even bigger challenge with many new faces. The good news is that she has the courage of a lion and she never ceases to amaze me. She has no fear that one. Not public speaking or dancing in front of crowds. She takes challenges and risks.

<img title="IMG_0726" style="border-right: 0px;

She is not the typical teenager in so many ways. Though she has her days, she never stops giving everything 100%. I am beaming today when I think about how much she has accomplished and how far she has come.

<img title="IMG_7167" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; There is nothing quite like it is there. As I type that for some reason, I hear Jack Nicholson’s voice, like the opening lines to Something's Gotta Give. And honestly, even that reminds me of Spring and sun and sand. Unfortunately, we don’t have sand and sun close by, unless you count Lake Michigan which is nearly 2 hours away, so close…it aint.

But what we do have is an outdoors-loving-rambunctious-toddler with a trike. He had all but gotten over his walking pneumonia when we were dressed and ready to leave one morning and he wouldn’t budge without his beloved trike. He rides it inside and out and when I say rides it, I mean endlessly.

<img title="IMG_9334" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;

He was sweet enough to let me snap a few pictures with the promise that I would let him take his bike to MeeMee’s (his babysitter). The little stinker even tried to load it himself!

<img title="IMG_9341-2" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;
Love that face!

I am really looking forward to the open windows, bike rides and taking this guy for trips to the park.

I have been working hard on taking better pictures. Slowly, but surely. I was so excited when these workshops opened up. I took the Photography 101 and even though I felt like I had some of the basics down, I felt like maybe I had been going about it all wrong.

The biggest reason I took it was to get the Interior Photo Tips. Ya see, that is one of the reasons I have been so absent. My pictures just haven’t been what I’m after. I have dreaded taking pictures of my dining room because, well for one it is still unfinished, and for two, it has no natural light (no windows) and I felt like no matter what I did the pictures weren’t working. But now I think I have a new handle on it and I am going to give it a shot. Wish me luck!

If you find yourself looking for some tips for taking better pictures overall, you won’t be disappointed and the price meets almost any budget. Thank you Team Palmer for your endless creativity and willingness to teach others!

If you know of any other reasonably priced photography workshops, do share! Oh and I would love to hear your plans this Spring.

Happy Friday!!!

Bloom

I seriously cannot wait for this book
I decided to link up to Shaunna's fun party today, just to see my list. Well and maybe to actually force myself to sit down!

1. No matter what I do, I cannot find enough time in the day. Like, ever!

2. I have not had one week without multiple sporting events since July of last year. I’m burned out.

3. I love sunshine. I crave it like a drug. There hasn’t been much lately.

4. My second oldest graduates from 8th grade this year and my oldest will be 22 the same month. Lots of tears in May.

5. My dad and my hubs are going to look at a 5 acre spread that sits on a river today. I’ve already looked at it. And it gives a whole new meaning to the term “fixer upper” but it boasts an old dance hall/studio for me.

6. Did I mention the chicken coop?

7. Did I mention that I already named Carson the chicken hunter?

8. I love the silence in the morning, that and a good hot cup of coffee.

9. I really love to take pictures.

10. We just might actually move….again….and start all over!

11. I get up 3 days a week at 5 a.m. to work-out. Boot camp style. Not fun.

12. I’ve only lost 10 pounds in a year. But I can do lots of push-ups and lunges, that means I’m stronger.

13. I’m super duper cheap. It’s rubbing off on my kids.

14. I gave the 8th grader money to buy a daddy-daughter dance dress and shoes. I prayed I gave her enough cash. She bought 3 dresses, 3 pairs of shoes, a pair of jeans, fake glasses and a glasses case and still had money left over. She’s a frugal rockstar! I’m so proud.

15. Last daddy daughter dance is this year. More tears.

16. She gets her license in 2 years. Even more tears.

17. I melted down on Saturday night at the thought of leaving my house. Again with the tears. I’m like a blubbering fool.

18. We just remodeled the dining room and I still have not shared pictures.

19. I blame sports for my lack of posting. I can’t even find time to get my hair done.

20. I’m amused by this list making thing.

21. It isn’t even Spring and I can’t wait until Summer.

22. I haven’t been on vacation in 5 years. Oh I need one so badly.

23. I pay someone to come by my house every two weeks and deep clean my floors. Tomorrow is one of those days.

24. I wish I could work from home. I miss my kiddos an awful lot while I’m at work. Thank God for Meme (the babysitter) though I hate to call her that because she is so much more.

25. I texted my hairdresser/friend today because I have to reschedule my haircut again….told her I am in desperate need of a wax, I look like Tom Selleck.

When I started, I thought I would have a hard time coming up with 25. Wrong! I bet I could come up with 25 more.

2012 Kitchen Plans

Hi…um, Hello, how are you? I am fine, thanks for asking. It’s been a while, but like any old friend, we can just pick up where we leave off and go on. You guys are cool like that.

It seems like time just keeps getting further and further away from me. People always ask me how I do it all and work full time and I can only say, I cry a lot. All kidding aside, I really do struggle to get it all done. Just like all of the other women/mothers in the world. We try to be super heros. Thankfully, I realize while I possess no super powers, I do have an ability to multitask and not sweat the mess (non-stop renovating and laundry are to blame).

I suppose if I would take on fewer projects or convince the hubby I need to simply quit my job (can ya say more work), I would find some time to actually complete Project A before I decide Project B should take precedence. But if there is one thing that can light a fire under my rump like no other, it is the thought of the MIL arriving on a train from Texas in about one week. Yikes.

We have been so busy repainting walls and doors and installing crown moulding (or molding, according to Google either is appropriate) that I have failed to take any in-progress pictures.

We have, however {for the most part} completed the dining room renovation. The items left to cross off that honey-do-room list are touch-up wall paint, order this rug from this lovely lady, whose taste is impeccable and doesn’t mind helping you pick out a rug, nor does she mind giving you a push to step-out-of-your-comfort-zone. She’s a wise one and she is like your mama, always right! I’m so proud to call her friend. Oh and hang the light fixtures, which are still up in the air because apparently disassembling ancient rusty light fixtures is no easy task. Sore subject, we just won’t go there today.

We also aren’t going to mention wall art because no matter what, I waffle constantly when it comes to putting holes in the walls. Seriously, it is a problem and I hope someday when I grow up I can over come my anxiety. Sigh! I’m not sure why I have such a crippling fear. I know one thing for sure, I will be hanging the hubby’s giant old school map center stage in there. In our previous home, it hung in his home office and has since been hiding out in a closet waiting for his moment to shine. And he couldn’t be happier. I always ask his opinion and if he genuinely dislikes anything it is an automatic veto. If he is uncertain, he will give it a chance, but he rarely has much input otherwise. I’m just glad the man can fix anything and everything.

Whew, as I just reread that list, I’m worn out. But, all of these things must be done in order to get our house “done”.

In other news, you would think that taking on a major wall-removing renovation might cause us to set aside the very idea of another project, but actually quite the opposite happened. We are apparently gluttons for punishment. We decided that with as much seemingly wasted floor space we now have, it would be the perfect place for a peninsula with some bar stools. You know so the kiddos can hang out and do homework, or I can watch hubby cook some of his yummy dishes.

I have my eye on something similar to what the ever-inspiring Holly recently debuted.

But considering the splurge she made on the corbels is way out of my budget and I will likely be using these salvaged beauties, my father so kindly bid on at an auction for me without even asking (smart man) and only after winning did he call to say that handy hubs could stop and pick them up. And with a $50 price tag for two, I couldn’t pass them up. The cell phone picture he took does not do them justice. They are giant at almost 2 feet, I hope they fit.

And the fun doesn’t stop there, oh no, a peninsula and gorgeous corbels are a perfect excuse to try out concrete countertops too. Kind of like these:

<img title="6283949654_8b35aff80d_o" style="border-top-width: 0px;

My poor hubby. Seriously, the man is a saint. I mean he never ever complains. Ever!

Finally, amidst all of this, our house is a major disaster area and I can’t wait to cross a few more projects off the list. One that has been a thorn in my side since we moved in has been finished for the most part, and we used this wall

<img title="kit-fea-pantry4-435" style="border-right: 0px;

as inspiration for that project. More on that next week, for now, I will wade through the laundry, drywall dust and paint cans and find more work.

What about you? What projects do you have on your agenda for the coming year??

There are no words….

Early yesterday morning, we woke up to the typical routine. I was out of laundry detergent and the wonderful hubby decided he would take care of it so I could get ready for church. I jumped in the shower and he walked out the door headed for the store. As I type this, I keep thinking about myself yelling mid-shower that whoever is running water needed to turn it off; selfish me. Little did I know, in a desperate attempt to help our neighbors, the hubs was trying to fill a bucket of water to save their home. As he walked out the door, he saw the corner of their garage was on fire and ran over to wake them. On the first try, they didn’t answer. He frantically ran next door to get help and as our other neighbor grabbed a garden hose to douse the flames, they realized the hoses were frozen solid. That is when he ran back across the street to our house and was trying to fill a bucket. Shortly after, Amanda came in screaming the neighbors house was on fire. Thankfully, on his second attempt to rouse them, they came out and were able to get themselves, their twins and their dogs to safety.

<img title="IMG_4266" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block;

It took what seemed like an eternity for the small town volunteer fire department to respond. There was little they could do to save it. The garage is completely gone. Thankfully, they were able to save themselves as well as salvage photos and some personal items. I was heartbroken to learn that all the of the kiddos Christmas presents were wrapped waiting in the garage with only one short week to go before the kids got to open them.

It is with a heavy heart that I type this. I am forever grateful that my husband reacted the way he did. He seems to think he could have done more. I say, making sure everyone got out was more than anyone could ask for. He is a hero in my book. I refuse to think about what could have been.

<img title="IMG_4272" style="border-right: 0px; (taken within minutes of the fire starting)

Today, I am so grateful that my neighbors are alive and unharmed and for my own husband and children.

The material things will be replaced and their home rebuilt. It will be a process. Right now, they have each other and that is what really matters.

<img title="IMG_4305" style="border-right: 0px; and we have patched all the doorways and various holes in the walls and are currently installing the necessary furring strips so that there is something to attach the ceiling planks to. When we bought our house, we noticed that the ceilings were looking less than stellar. Reason being, after years of hanging on by nails, it had started to sag. Not badly, but enough for us to know. So we decided to install the ceiling planks for two reasons, one simply for aesthetics, I love the look and second because we knew that we could use the furring strips to sort of re-anchor the ceiling drywall to the joists in the ceiling thereby straightening it and improving the overall look, so while the Mister is busy working on that, I have been playing around with various ideas for the rooms overall plan.

Enter my (attempt at) mood board of sorts.

<img title="Dining Room Plan" style="border-right: 0px;

I found two awesome industrial fixtures at our local antique mall for a measly 8 bucks each. I actually ran to the register. I don’t have a photo of mine as they are currently being rewired. Can’t be too careful. You will find I honestly have an electricity phobia, so getting them rewired will allow me to sleep at night. Next up are those awesome chairs that I have been pining for for quite some time. I have yet to “add item to cart'”, but am really hoping to just do it. While I still love my current chairs I think with the small size of the room, they are just too bulky. Since we have spent only around $150 on the reno so far, I thought I could splurge on a rug and chairs. Especially with Christmas around the corner, but like I said, we shall see. And speaking of rugs, how about that baby. No surprise here, it hails from Pottery Barn and I actually purchased the Bistro Stripe rug and am happy with the quality and the price, so most likely, I will add one to my cart. Finally, I saved the best for last.

That beadboard cabinet. Sigh. Love! There is, of course, a story behind those cabinets too. Yep, I said cabinets.

I was with the hubs one afternoon about 3 years ago and we happened to stop by a friend’s house. We have known this friend since high school and had been to his house many many times. But, I had never been in his (now deceased) stepdad’s shed. To say this man was a collector is an understatement. The place was a giant pole barn and it was packed full. And after much poking around, I saw the cabinets. I couldn’t help myself…I blurted out, “I have to have those” and he of course, said I could. Such a true friend. Well, months later, he still had not made room to haul them out, so one Saturday morning, I called and offered him $100 just to open the door and let my Mister in to pick them up. Long story short, within an hour they were on a utility trailer on their way home. Well, into storage anyway and that is where they have sat for the last few years, patiently waiting to be used. So with the table being technically free and the cabinets only setting me back $100, even if I splurge on the chairs and rug, I’m well under $1,000. How’s that for designing on a dime?

Wish me luck, I'm going back in to help, well for a few minutes anyway, tonight I have a date with my daughter and her bestie to catch the midnight premiere!

I would love to hear your best bargain or the craziest place you went picking! speech, but I feel like after years of pleading my case, it was almost as much work. When we moved into our desperately-in-need-of-some-TLC ranch nearly 4 years ago, we actually needed all 5 bedrooms. The only problem was, the house was originally just your typical rectangular ranch, but an addition in the early 90’s gave it more of a T-shape. An even bigger problem was the placement of that addition; it was attached right in the middle of the house (thus the T-shape) which required removing the only window in the center bedroom. Brandon was temporarily housed there until my nephew and oldest daughter flew the coupe. At that point, we also discovered we were pregnant and scrambled to shift everyone around in order to keep the nursery near our bedroom. And again, we attempted to use the windowless cave as a bedroom and let me just say, we hated it! It wasn’t cozy or sweet, it was dark and bordering on creepy. So, we moved Carson to the guest room and we were left with a windowless storage room.

But what we needed was a dining room. You can see from the photo below just how cramped the gianormous table is. It seemed to stop the flow of the house. It sat right in the middle, between the front door in the living room and the family room addition. It felt heavier than heavy. Insert begging and pleading. (Please ignore the mess in the photo below…it was snapped moments before the Mister tore that wall down.)

It is hard to tell from the picture, but the table must be pulled out anytime a person decides to squeeze in on the back side. Talk about a pain in the rear!

Despite my begging and pleading, hubs thought it might be a bad idea because we are planning on selling within the next years and he was certain people would want a 5 bedroom. My rationale is that if they need 5 bedrooms, they need a big table and a room to house said big table. He wasn’t buying it.

So, for the last 2 years, it has been a no-go. That is until this weekend. I have been becoming increasingly more persistent with my idea. I even offered a trade-off. I get my dining room and hubby gets a heated garage. Maybe he doesn’t realize but it is a win-win for me too. I get the dining room and a heated garage where I can complete more projects..woot woot!

So on Friday night, we emptied the room and started by removing the closets, as opposed to knocking the wall out, in an effort contain as much dust as possible.

<img title="IMG_1418" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;

However, containing daddy’s little helper, proved more challenging. Carson insisted on helping.

<img title="IMG_1434" style="border-right: 0px;

That meant, I wasn’t much help with the demo because I was busy keeping a toddler occupied (his brother and sister were at friends) and Thomas only lasted so long…

<img title="IMG_1431" style="border-right: 0px;

We compromised and decided that with resale in mind, we would frame an opening standard size for a set of French doors to let in light, but allow for some privacy. That way, it could be used as an office.

It didn’t take long for things to look quite a bit like this.

<img title="IMG_1421" style="border-right: 0px;

But seeing it progress was worth every speck of dust.

<img title="IMG_1432" style="border-right: 0px;

<img title="IMG_1440" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; (Add it to my ever growing to-do list.) Then you could see the layout and maybe make better sense of the light blocking addition and how much opening up that wall creates flow and lets the house breathe.

We still have tons of work to do. The drywall is up and has the first coat of “mud” on it and the light switches are in place, but I still have a couple days to determine light placement. (Yes the Mister is permitted to do the electrical work). I am so thankful that the hubs decided to invest in real estate 15 years ago. He has gained so much experience working on our rentals. So for him, this was surprisingly easy. (Disclaimer: Unless you or your hubby possess those skills these are definitely jobs I would leave to the pros.) We were 100% sure the wall was non-load bearing before we started. That is a whole different ball of wax and despite our combined DIY experience, even we wouldn’t attempt that one!

<img title="IMG_1426" style="border-right: 0px;

We still need to finish the drywall, prime, paint, replace the floor (where the closet left holes) and install v-groove paneling on the ceiling, similar to here, prime and paint that too. I still need to have the antique industrial lights I bought for a song rewired and figure out just how to hang them and whether or not I am painting them. I still haven’t worked out the floor plan exactly, but what I do know is that my gianormous table will be going into storage and we will be using this table instead. I also finally get to bring some cupboards out of storage and cannot wait to finally have them in the room.

I am so excited to finally have a real dining room. But the icing on the cake was having the hubby look at me after the dust settled, (when he wasn’t really sold on the idea) and say, “It was an excellent idea.”

Amanda’s Room So Far

Howdy. Here it is August 1st already and I cannot believe summer is winding down to a close. It is right about a month until Labor Day and less than 5 months until Christmas and I still feel like it should be Spring. Where does the time go?

I sure wish I knew. It seems the older I get, the faster it goes and the less time I have to check things off my to-do list. My intention was to wrap this project up in a three day weekend. Didn’t happen. My revised time line was to finish it while my Amanda was away at softball this week. Again. Didn’t happen. I’ll spare ya another didn’t happen cause as you may have guessed, we still aren’t “done”. We did manage to make a bit more progress over the weekend and so before we get to the “here is where we are at on Amanda’s bedroom redo” part, I’ll take ya back to where we started.

When we first bought the house every room had worn, outdated carpet and very dark unhappy paint colors, that made the very small rooms feel like caves.

BEFORE:

During Phase One, we primed and painted all the walls, installed hardwood flooring, new doors, casings and baseboards. We were on tighter than tight budgets (time and money) and decided that finishing touches like crown moulding could wait until Phase Two (which would be a more fine tuning and finishing up details). Little by little, as time and money have allowed, we are working our way through the house. Starting with Amanda's room.

PHASE ONE: ~New Paint, Install Hardwood Flooring

And since she is 13 and feels more grown up, she has a very definite idea of how her room should look. That means we have been trying to bring her ideas to life, while at the same time, making those "finishing touches". Anyway, here is a little reminder of what we had picked for the room.

INSPIRATIONAL MOOD BOARD:

The first weekend, we emptied her room and had all the walls painted and this weekend we still needed to paint and hang the crown moulding, touch up wall the paint, paint her t.v. cabinet, load room, install headboard, hang pictures, and complete the final touches.

We managed to make it to load the room and that is where we left off and hope to finish this weekend. Since it’s already time for football and softball and DIY life with a toddler can get tricky sometimes, I think finishing may be wishful thinking, but I am trying to be optimistic. Overall I am happy with the progress. Amanda came home to find her room looking like this (cell phone) picture.

PHASE TWO – IN PROGRESS:

And while I envisioned finishing it and surprising her with a big dramatic reveal with flowers and candles and the whole nine yards, the party pooper also known as reality swooped in and dashed that dream. When I opened the door and showed her her new room, I was thrilled that she gave me an 8 out of 10. She politely explained that she couldn’t award me a 10 for an unfinished room. Tough crowd! The smile on her face made all of the hard work worth it. And the fact that she stayed in her room the entire day was further evidence of her approval.

So, as of right now we are still awaiting a finished headboard, and I am hopeful that we will have it very soon. We still need to frame and hang pictures/artwork and I have a feeling we will be adding to her collection.

Stay tuned for more slow but sure progress.

Don’t be shy. Leave me a comment. I love to hear thoughts, feedback and suggestions. Oh and of course, it would be great to hear that I am not the only one who consistently fails to complete projects in an very truncated time frame!
