If you like the "genie in the lamp" type of stories, you will want to take the time to read these books. Good vs. evil, suspense, and adventure are the norm for the series.

The podcast staff has tried to get more variety on our show, but the teachers life is busy, and it is difficult to add more work.

Sooooo... It is with excitement that this podcast will be focused on the Media Center, and the Computer Technology classes.

It has been an unusual two weeks. Technical difficulties did not allow us to create our podcast last week. This week, Gov. Purdue cancelled school across Georgia due to Hurricane Rita and the concern for possible fuel shortages that occurred earlier after Hurricane Katrina.

Our eighth grade students were schedule to have ITBS testing Monday - Friday (Sept. 26-30). The testing dates are now Wednesday - Tuesday (Sept. 28-Oct. 4).

This week, Ms. Bremner reviews Hoop Girlz.

One of Mr. Skinner's students (Vanessa) introduces us to the One Last Wish series by Lurlene McDaniel.

An interview with Mrs. McKinney about Creole Elementary School in Moss Point, Mississippi. We are “adopting” the school that was greatly damaged by Hurrican Katrina.

An interview with the Language Academy teachers; Mrs. Jones, Ms. DeBolt, and Ms. Razo. They have collected over 430 stuffed animals for our Teddy Bears for Tender Hearts campaign.

DMS Podcast #4

Welcome to the DMS Podcast for the week of August 29.

We have two important events taking place this week.
*On Monday night at 7:00 DMS will have Open House.
*We have early dismissal on Wednesday, August 31 at 1:00. If you are a car rider please make sure that you have a ride to pick you up at that time.

FCA will begin meeting Friday, September 2 at 8:00 a.m. in the multi-purpose room. We will meet until 8:45. Everyone is invited to attend!

Remember, next Monday is Labor Day. We will not have school, but there will be a new edition of the DMS Podcast.

Dalton Middle School will present the musical "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" as this year's play. Information sheets are now available in the Fine Art's Wing. This comical musical deals with the special moments in the day of the life of Charlie Brown. There are 13 parts and Mr. Helton and Mrs. Autry will begin conducting auditions next Monday.

We are again collecting boxtops for education coupons this year. Please place your name on the back of each coupon and drop them in the big pink bin outside the attendance office.

DMS Podcast #3

This week we will look at some upcoming activities at Dalton Middle School and a visit from special guest, Ms. Bremner from the Media Center.

The Middle School Football Jamboree is this Saturday, August 27, at Murray County High School field. Each game is a 20-minute running clock.

DMS 7th Grade team will play Eastbrook at 9:00 and Bagley at 10:15

DMS 8th Grade team will play Eastbrook at 11:55 and Gladden at 1:35

All the area teams will be competing. The teams are Westside, North Whitfield, Eastbrook, Valley Point, Bagley, Gladden, and Dalton.

BOOK REVIEW – Ms. Bremner shares information about a Georgia Book Award Nominee, Al Capone Does My Shirts.

The Academic Bowl Team will begin school practices next week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:30 until 4:30. The school try-outs will be held Friday, September 23rd. Sign-up with Ms. DeBolt.

You asked for it in the leisure time survey last year. Here's your chance to learn more about the exciting outdoor sport of backpacking. Dalton State College is offering an evening class on Tuesdays in September. See Mr. Kratz for more information.

Students who have family serving in the military are meeting with Dr. Vance's. This is an opportunity to receive support and encouragement while family loved ones are away.

We are again collecting BoxTops for Education (from all General Mills products) coupons this year. Please place your name on the back of each coupon and drop them in the big pink bin outside the attendance office. We will have our first drawing on Friday, August 19, so be sure to turn in your coupons!

Podcast #2

This week...What is a Podcast and why would a school have one?

Podcasting is a new phenomena. It is a combination of iPod and broadcasting. Unlike radio broadcasts that require the listener to tune in at a particular time to hear their favorite program, podcasting allows the listener to decide when and where they want to listen. It is information/education anytime - anywhere.

Much like downloading music, a podcast is an audio file that can be downloaded from the Internet. People all over the world are beginning their own programs and allowing anyone in the world with a computer to listen. Corporations are joining in too. Disney, National Public Radio, ESPN, and hundreds of others are podcasting in order to get their message out to the public.

So why would a school have a podcast?
1) It's free!
2) It allows students, parents, and the community to know what is going on in the life of the school. If you can't make it to the PTO meeting, we can record it, and make it available to you.
3) The DMS band has a great tradition. The band director can make the recordings of the competitions and concerts available so students, teachers, parents, and grandparents can hear the band.
4) Foreign language learning & English Language Learning. Saving recorded dialogues to an iPod can provide students a time to listen to the language in the car while they are coming to school in the morning.

There are many possibilities. We hope to have sports reports, interviews, book reviews, and news available to you on a weekly basis.

A Brave New Experiment

Podcast #1 - August 8, 2005

This year at Dalton Middle School is a very important year. Along with Dr. Porter (Superintendent) and Mr. Suits (Principal), the Computer Technology staff has expanded our classes to 4 sections. We are working very hard to make the Computer Applications classes connect with the content of the core classes of Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Reading. One of the major goals of our school is that students will become proficient writers. Our L.A. teachers have done a fantastic job in improving our student scores on the state (GA) writing exams.

The Computer Applications teachers (Mr. Murry, Mrs. Keith, Mrs. Marsh, and Mr. Smith) are working together to plan projects that are based upon the standards of the core classes, with a focus of making all students of Dalton Middle School proficient users of today's technology. We hope to have students using not only Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) but also become "digital citizens" that will appropriately create blogs (such as this one), web sites, and wikis, as well as to learn to use the WWW to better their research skills.

In addition to this blog (Web Blog) which contains written expressions, you will be able to come to this page and listen to a weekly podcast. Podcasts are a fairly new medium that allows people to create a broadcast (like radio) that can be downloaded from here (and in the near future on iTunes).
