forme d'expression semble pratiquée depuis la nuit des temps chez les Haïtiens (Saint Dominque). On ne sait comment ce peuple est devenu " un peuple de peintres ". Peintures naïves, religieuses, historique ou primitives font partie de la vie quotidienne.<br />Peu après l'indépendance, (1804) le Roi Christophe, mégalomane et dictateur plus ou moins éclairé , régnant sur la région Nord, crée une Académie de peinture au Cap Haïtien. De 1830 à 1860 la peinture historique et religieuse prend un grand essor. Elle retrace avec un talent indéniable l'histoire de l'émancipation de ce peuple qui fut le premier à se libérer par ses propres moyens de l'esclavage ou immortalise les glorieux libérateurs. Elle chante la gloire d'une religion étonnante (le Culte Vaudou) qui assimile et métamorphose avec poésie et humour les personnages de la religion catholique ou les esprits venus avec les esclaves de l'Afrique profonde, elle stigmatise les aberrations sanglantes des dictatures…<br /></span></p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><table style="text-align: left; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px;" border="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr> <td width="63%"><span class="page_texte">Le monde découvre bientôt avec étonnement et admiration l'Art naïf ou primitif haïtien. L'homme à qui l'on attribue cette découverte s'appelle Peters Dewitt, professeur américain et peintre de talent. Il décide, juste après la guerre de 40, de créer une école d'art et de peinture à Port au Prince. Ces années d'après guerre seront fertiles en innovations et en découvertes artistiques et constitueront un tournant dans l'histoire de l'art naïf. Cette école accueille bon nombre de peintres et aussi d'autres talents (sculpture, travail du fer) qui n'ont aucune culture artistique ni véritable connaissances techniques, mais qui possèdent une inspiration, une grande vitalité d'expression , une fraîcheur, un sens inné de la couleur et du trait.</span></td> <td width="37%"><img src="http://www.enfants-soleil.org/Chap_Activites/Images/nono_marche.jpg" height="299" width="396" /></td> </tr> </tbody></table><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;"><span class="page_texte"> Mais c'est de la vie quotidienne qu'est née la peinture haïtienne, bien avant que les Américains ou les Européens ne s'y intéressent. Les Haïtiens ont toujours possédé un goût prononcé pour la couleur, pour la parole magique du dessin et de la décoration. (Un goût pour le conte et la poésie aussi, et l'histoire de leur pays ; mais une grande partie de la population, illettrée, n'a accès qu'à l'oral). Beaucoup pensent que ce sont les aspirations profondes du Vaudou qui sont à l'origine de ce sens de la peinture. Les grands peintres Haïtiens d'hier et d'aujourd'hui ont représenté avec bonheur des scènes de cérémonies Vaudou…du temps des esclaves ( ou elles furent des catalyseurs de la révolte et de la marche vers la libération), jusqu'à nos jours. Mais c'est le peuple haïtien qui a joué le rôle le plus important dans cette émergence unique d'un art populaire et dans son évolution : les Haïtiens " parlent avec la peinture ".<br /></span></p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><table style="text-align: left; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; width: 680px; height: 328px;" border="0"> <tbody><tr> <td width="58%"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="page_texte">De nombreux Ateliers se créent : l'Ecole du Nord, à Cap Haïtien, l'Ecole de Sud à Jacmel (où vivent aujourd'hui nombre de peintres devenus célèbres) par exemple Ismaël Saincilus, (Maître des icônes) entré au centre d'Art de Dewitt vers 1956, et qui deviendra le créateur de l'Ecole de l'Artibonite. La communauté de Saint Soleil produit des œuvres puissantes, enracinées dans le Vaudou. Parmi les paysans illettrés se révèlent de grands artistes. André Malraux leur rend visite en 1976, quelques mois avant sa mort. Les musées d'ambre à Saint-Domingue et Puerto Plata possèdent de belles collections; De même, diverses pièces peuvent être obtenues dans presque tous les magasins d'artisanat du pays. </span> </p><p align="justify"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;font-size:85%;">Le larimar est également reconnu comme pierre précieuse.
