Patios and decks are both more than capable of giving you a really wonderful place where you can host family events, family gatherings and other special types of entertainment. At the same time, it is quite possible for you to add a small patio to a special little garden area in order to create a getaway spot where you can relax and soak up the calmness and the refreshment offered by the natural surroundings of the space.

Adding a deck or a patio or making improvements to an existing deck or existing patio is something that you can do in order to increase the equity in your home, adding value to your living space.

Fountains are becoming increasingly popular as a feature that you can add to your garden landscape design. There are a number of different types of fountains that you can install for this purpose including traditional and multi-tiered options that remind us of the European villas and country estates, bringing old world charm to a modern garden for example.

There are also a number of different types of modern fountains that you can install in your garden in order to utilize natural materials like unique stones and rocks or large ceramic pottery. These types of fountains are certainly becoming increasingly popular in a variety of different types of landscaping and gardening architecture.

Another popular element that is continuing to gain popularity in many garden settings is rock gardens. Rock gardens have the unique benefit of being extremely attractive while incorporating few if any plants, meaning that these rock gardens are extremely low maintenance but still quite beautiful. They require little or no watering and little or no weeding, and in general they require close to no attention unless you want to sit around and look at their beauty. Why spend so much time tending to your garden when you can spend most of your time instead admiring how beautiful it is without having to worry about time spent on maintenance?

Another really popular type of inspiration is to emulate the concept of an English cottage garden, and many people are incorporating traits from these famous gardens in their own garden spaces. These garden types are noteworthy because they are very freeform and tend to lack any formal planning. When it comes to English cottage gardens there is not a lot of rigidity when it comes to design, but the concept instead is to simply let things grow and to see what happens. If you are looking to create a garden space that is natural, organic and un fooled around with, the English cottage garden concept is one that is well worth exploring.

The people of Japan have been fond of landscapes and gardens for more than 500 years. This is especially true when it comes to Zen gardens, which are an ancient Buddhist practice. One of the primary aspects of the Zen and Zen Garden concepts is about creating art out of a landscape, and this is where ancient traditional Japanese landscape garden design comes from.

In today’s world, there are only a few dozen traditional Japanese gardens that you can find around the world, and some of them are famous. They can be found in places other than Japan, but Japan has its fair share of small and large Japanese garden landscapes. The Japanese garden concept is all about the essence behind creating your own small little world in a backyard or garden space.

For many Americans, Japanese gardens involve a lot of Japanese elements such as bonsai trees and bamboo plants, but there are many other characteristics and facets that need to be considered when it comes to creating a true Japanese garden landscape. Japanese landscaping design is actually an art form not unlike painting or brush calligraphy in Japan, and there is a devotion to these gardens that is unlike any other.

Many contractors that specialize in Japanese landscaping design have spent time working in the creation of specialized Japanese gardens. There are several different varieties of Japanese gardens, and each come with their own cost depending on the complexity involved. There are Japanese dry gardens or rock gardens for example, which utilize huge rocks, water pouring over the rocks and clever landscaping that turns the garden space into a lush waterfall. There are other gardens that use sand for the representation of water, surrounding huge rocks that are designed to represent countries.

In order to create a Japanese garden landscape that is authentic in feeling, you are going to want something that is calm and tranquil, allowing you to hear the water and take in the calm sights, which means your garden should be secluded away from noisy streets and neighbors.

Japanese garden landscapes may also have walls and gates, especially those incorporating natural elements like Bamboo, as Bamboo stalks can be found in most of the countries across Asia. You will also find a variety of different Flora elements including Sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom, Bonsai and Pine trees, which are all often found in the Japanese garden setting. There are a number of other pieces of decoration that you can utilize such as a Koi pond, small natural bridges, stone lanterns, stone steps and other tranquil natural elements that lend to the creation of a tranquil and inviting space.

If you want to create your own Japanese garden landscape, first read up on the elements that are traditionally Japanese, and then you can focus on implementing them in your own unique way.

When you add a swimming pool to your landscape, it should not appear as a fish out of water, but instead incorporating a pool into your landscape should be smooth and easy. Your swimming pool should look as if it belongs as part of your landscape rather than sticking out like a sore thumb. Incorporating a brand new swimming pool installation into your landscape design is a task that is not always easy. Pools tend to be a serious expense and also a truly major component for most landscape designs. Being able to design your own unique pool landscape or poolscape that fits your budget, your land and your lifestyle is going to take knowledge, thought and creativity.

A good pool based landscape design is going to begin by assessing your goals. You need to consider the size of the pool, the shape of the pool and the amenities. You should also take this time to think about the paving materials that you would like to use. There are other considerations as well, such as whether the pool is going to have an automated cover or not because this will determine the size and the shape of the pool. These and many other types of questions relating to the aesthetics and the use of the pool area need to be asked and answered before you begin the digging process.

More often than not, the location of your pool is going to be determined by zoning restrictions as well as site conditions. You are going to want to protect existing trees as well as avoid areas of heavy shade or areas where strong winds are present. You are also going to want to decide how visible you would like the pool to be during the off season while you are in the house. Proximity to the home is an important consideration, as well as proximity to bathroom facilities and changing facilities in the home. If you build your pool too far away from the house, the pool will be unsafe and therefore seldom if ever used.

A well designed pool landscape is one that should relate well to the house as well as the surroundings while simultaneously affording an adequate amount of pool pavement to offer eating space, lounging space and possibly shady space for people who do not appreciate as much sun. The pool equipment should be accessible while still being hidden from public few. You also want to make sure that safety equipment is readily available at all times as well. There are many jurisdictions that require fencing by law, so make sure that you think about this when you are planning your pool landscape. The fencing that you choose should create harmony with the landscape surrounding the pool.

All of these things should be considered when you are planning your pool landscape.

… Continued from part 1.

French garden landscapes tend to be laid out in a precise geometrical or symmetrical pattern, following a strict grid. Many French gardens are known for offering topiaries and hedge mazes. Formal French gardens have been very popular designs for landscaping and they have been used frequently in the past by nobility in England to dress up the country houses. It is not uncommon at all to see a very ornate and precise French style garden in the middle of the countryside in England, which may seem a bit peculiar but is actually quite typical.

Garden Landscape #5 – The Native Garden Landscape

The idea behind the Native style garden landscape is still a relatively new one in nature, but this is not stopping it from sweeping all the way across the United States, attracting brand new people to the world of gardening in the process. The idea behind the Native garden landscape is to only use flowers and plants that are specifically native to the region in which you live. Conservationists are saying that by planting gardens that are native in nature, you will be benefiting the soil as well as providing healthy refuge for the local wildlife while simultaneously benefiting the ecological balance in your area by sustaining it. Fans of native gardens believe that this country garden landscape design offers the landscape a more natural look than any other type of garden landscape.

Garden Landscape #6 – The Tropical Garden Landscape

The tropical garden landscape is a popular design choice because it is naturally full of a multitude of different exotic plants, and most tropical plants come in deep and creative colors with plenty of lush foliage as well. Tropical gardens are truly stunning, but it is important to understand that they are also one of the most difficult types of gardens for you to recreate in your landscape space, because the plants involved in these landscapes are delicate and only tend to thrive when very specific conditions are met on a consistent basis.

Maintaining your own tropical garden is a lot like keeping a saltwater marine fish tank. Both are quite exploding in terms of color, they are mysterious and they are quite exotic, but both require that you possess a lot of time, a great deal of knowledge and the dedication to keep things alive no matter the time cost involved. If you are willing to put effort into keeping a tropical garden, then it can be a really unique way for you to keep your landscape looking and feeling exotic, but it is vitally important that this type of garden space is not a “set it and forget it” kind of garden, as plenty of work is going to be involved.

There are a wide variety of different types and styles of gardens. There are so many, in fact, that it may seem overwhelming and daunting for you to try and figure out the type of garden that you are interested in planting. First and foremost, there are two basic main types of gardens that you can plant, and these are flower gardens and vegetable gardens, or form gardens and functional gardens as it were. These are both pretty self explanatory when you think about it. From here on, however, it gets a little trickier because there are a number of different types of gardens that you can create once you know if you want to have a vegetable garden or a flower garden.

Here is an overview of some of the more popular types of garden landscapes that you can make use of. Keep in mind that the only true limit behind your capabilities when it comes to creating a garden is your own imagination.

Garden Landscape #1 – The English Country Garden Landscape

The English country garden landscape concept is very popular, especially among people from European descent that are fans of the country sides of England. English county style garden landscapes are generally made up of unique flowers and plants that are found in the countryside of England. The types of plants and flowers and the varieties that you choose are going to vary depending on what part of the English countryside that you are actually attempting to recreate. English country style gardens generally incorporate in rustic wood, wildflowers and stone benches, as well as water in the form of a gazing pool or a pond for the best authenticity.

Garden Landscape #2 – The Victorian Garden Landscape

Victorian style garden landscapes are another popular type of garden landscape, especially among older aged gardeners. These Victorian garden spaces can incorporate a wide variety of different flowers and plants, but they will generally also incorporate stone statues like gargoyles and cherubs, Victorian style roses and bejeweled and finely colored fairy balls or gazing balls, footpaths and stone benches as well.

Garden Landscape #3 – The Japanese Garden Landscape

The Japanese garden landscape is a concept that is becoming increasingly popular, though it is important to note that they can be difficult to reproduce if you do not have plenty of land to work with. Traditional Japanese gardens feature small structures in the heart of the garden that is a teahouse or a home, and this looks out over the entire garden. Japanese style garden landscapes incorporate traditional elemental style design featuring rocks, water, lanterns and stepping stones or bridges as well.

Garden Landscape #4 – The French Garden Landscape

The French garden is an ever-formal garden, and it is typically one that would be found around a large home, a hotel, a fancy theater or some other popular attraction.

There are three primary types of paving stones in existence that you can use for the purpose of creating a unique and interesting driveway space, patio space or walkway. These three primary types of pavers are:

Concrete pavers, which are made out of cement materials,

Brick pavers, which are made out of clay materials,

Stone pavers, which are made out of natural stone material such as flagstone or granite,

All of these types of pavers also come in a wide variety of different shapes and colors, and what this means is that you have a wide variety of different options to choose from when you are putting stones down for different purposes. There are a wide variety of different popular patterns that are regularly used for the purpose of paving using stones, and these include circles, herringbone pattern, basket weave pattern and many others as well. If you are trying to be even more creative, then something else that you may want to consider is mixing various designs together with different colored stones in order to create a unique concept.

Paving your driveway or patio space with stones is something that can offer an excellent first impression for people that visit your home. There are a number of different things that you are going to want to be aware of when it comes to paving with stones, however. These things include climate, drainage consideration, how much time is available for the purpose of maintenance and what your budget is. All of these things are going to need to be considered long before you set about on this process.

No matter whether you will be using stones or pavers or any other materials for your patio process, you are going to need to consider using edging because there are numerous advantages to using edging when paving driveways, paths or patios, including:

It offers supports for the pavers,

It reduces the chance of cracks appearing,

It adds to the appearance of the paved space,

It reduces the amount of maintenance that is required.

The most popular type of paver that you are going to come across when putting stones down for a patio, a driveway or any other purpose is going to be stone pavers, which are natural and beautiful. What you need to keep in mind however is that these are not always the best option for every situation. In some situations it may be more ideal for you to use brick, which is a stronger material and also happens to be more durable as well. Brick is also capable of adapting better when it comes to shifts in the ground that may occur throughout the year.

There are several advantages to raised bed gardening. Not only is a raised bed less compact and much better for many types of plants but it’s also easier on the gardener who no longer has to reach the ground to weed and tend plants. It’s much better for many people to bend over and tend plants in a raised bed than it is to try to get on the ground to do the same. And with all the advantages of gardening in raised beds, the only disadvantages seem to be how difficult it is to build them and then take them apart later.

Fortunately, for people who really want to try gardening in a raised bed, there’s a simple solution. The M Brace eliminates all the disadvantages by making it possible for anyone to easily and quickly build a raised bed.

The M Brace is simply a corner brace for a raised bed that you set in place. They’re sold in sets of four so that you can set your braces, simply slide the wood into place and in just a few minutes you’ll have a finished raised bed. The beauty of it is that you don’t need any tools. All you need are some two by fours and the braces, and of course the dirt to fill the bed with afterwards. In fact, the most difficult part of creating a raised garden bed with the M Brace method is shoveling the dirt in when you’re done.

The ingenious design allows you to simply slide two by fours into the braces without the need for nails or screws. When you’re finished, you have a secure raised bad that looks great from the outside because of the nice design of the braces. You can get the M Brace in a variety of different die-cut designs or you can get solid ones for simplicity.

So many plants do better in raised beds because the soil is looser and the moisture drains away much easier. Having a raised bed also allows you to garden longer because the soil stays warmer, allowing for earlier planting and helping plants survive longer into the end of fall. Given all of the advantages of raised bed gardening, both for vegetable gardening and flower gardening, there’s really no reason not to try it now that it’s been made so easy.

The M Brace is available in some home and garden stores in California and other Western states but it’s also conveniently available online so that gardeners in every state can give them a try. They’re $165 for the set of 4 that you need to make one raised bed. You can make a square bed or a rectangle, with any sides up to 12 feet long. You can also take your bed apart just as quickly as you put it together if you need to move it to another part of your garden.

The M Brace is an ideal way to get a raised bed garden without the hassle and work of measuring, cutting and building one.

Here are some more unique landscaping ideas for when you are dealing with unique spaces.

Landscaping for Terraces

From a secluded sitting area situated near to the master suite, to an expansive patio intended for extensive outdoor entertaining, a garden terrace is a beautiful landscaping technique capable of creating a unique harmony between your indoor living space and your outdoor living space. You can use a wide variety of different colors, patterns and materials that are capable of complimenting your overall choices in design. You can also add a much greater level of functionality to your terrace and your patio simply by integrating covered areas and other custom touches such as railing to the space to really make it yours.

Landscaping Tips for Smaller Yards

When you have a limited amount of outdoor space, that does not mean that you are going to be limited when it comes to choosing design ideas for your space. Small yards have actually become extremely common, and so there are a wide variety of different ways that you can work with a tiny amount of space in order to create a beautiful and stunning country garden. Here are some examples of what you can do when working with a smaller yard:

You can integrate in outdoor accessories that are proportionate. A large sized garden pond may completely overpower a smaller yard, leaving a tiny amount of space for living, but what if you implemented a much smaller but still functional pond in this space instead?

You may also want to include smaller tree varieties such as ornamental trees and fruit trees in place of larger shade trees. If you do want a specific tree variety that grows too large for your small space, what you may consider doing is container planting it, where the container would limit the root growth, limiting the growth of the tree to a size that you can handle.

There are certain colors that you can choose in your landscaping elements that will make your overall yard appear as if it were larger. Using bright and open colors is a great way to make your landscape seem as if it is much larger than it actually is.

There are also certain textures that you can implement in order to create a better feeling of space and openness.

You can also opt for slender types of fencing that creates an open sort of feeling rather than a claustrophobic one.

Finally, you can choose plants that grow in a vertical manner rather than a horizontal one in order to add more dimension to your small space. Examples include vines and climbing plants.

Implement a few or all of these techniques in combination in order to create your own functional country garden landscape no matter how large or how small the space is that you have to work with.

Solar garden lights present you with a super ecologically friendly and cost effective method of making your garden appear more classy and more complete. These unique types of lighting are fueled by NiCad or Nickel Cadmium batteries, which are charged completely throughout the day by sunlight. The lights are automatically turned on in the evening as a result of the light change, and then in the morning they are turned off automatically, and as long as there is sunshine, their batteries are charging.

Solar lights are available in a number of different forms including floating lights and mounted lights and a myriad of different styles, shapes, sizes and colors depending on your budget and your individual needs as well. Solar lights also happen to be a really great choice for lighting around ponds and other water features because of the fact that they are so safe.

Solar Lighting Types

There are a number of different types of solar garden lights that you can use for your country garden landscape including ground stake soar garden lights, hanging solar garden lights and spotlight style solar garden lights.

- * Ground Stake Solar Garden Lights: These solar lights consist of simple LED lights that are attached via stakes, making them simple to penetrate the ground with no matter how tough it happens to be. This means that ground stake style solar lighting options are exceptional for garden beds, patios and pathways because they can be inserted right into the ground in order to achieve the lighting effects that you are looking for. These lighting options are powered using solar powers that power batteries stored within the stake. When the sun goes down, the power is used in order to light the stakes up.

- * Hanging Solar Garden Lights: These solar lights consist of gas lanterns, lanterns and candles that are hung from chains or special hangers and used in order to light up your space. These hanging solar light options have become especially popular when it comes to lighting English country gardens, French country gardens and other country garden style spaces because they offer soft and gentle lighting that isn’t too bold and fits right in with the space.

- * Spotlight Style Solar Garden Lights: Spotlight solar lighting options are often just as bright as floodlights are, but they tend to be much more focused on a specific item that you are looking to illuminate within your garden space. They are great in areas that have night sky ordinances, which are responsible for regulating the amount of light that you can release from your property into the night sky at any time.
