Last week I was getting ready to test exterior paint colors on my
house here in New Hampshire. The house has a mix of dark green
Andersen casement and double-hung windows. The house was built in
2002, and many of the vinyl parts of the windows have experienced
significant color fade. I wanted to get rid of the fade so I could
get the correct complimentary colors on the body of the house.

I called Andersen to see if there was a wipe-on product that would
restore the color much like you do with automotive vinyl. Much to
my surprise I discovered the vinyl color fade is covered under
warranty.

The Andersen folks sent out a professional painter, John Resnick
with his crew to apply a special lacquer coating that matches the
original finish. John's sister Lizzy and another employee Randy
make up the team.

John, Lizzy and Randy do interior and exterior painting, wallpaper
work and commercial painting. He told me he services much of
Massachusetts, southern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. If you
need a quote from a real professional, give John a call.

If you have some of these faded green Andersen windows, I suggest
you contact Andersen now and get them taken care of. To the best of
my knowledge, no other Andersen windows are suffering this fading

I can't say enough good things about Andersen's response to this
situation. It's refreshing to see companies that respond positively
to problems. All too often companies run away from predicaments
instead of running towards them. Remember, only contact Andersen if
you have the dark green windows like mine.

Exterior Painting Tip

As I just mentioned, I'm getting ready to paint the house here in
New Hampshire. I wanted to paint an entire section of the house to
get a good feel for the look of the paint on the siding and trim.
As I've done my entire career, I washed the surfaces with soap,
water and some of my magic Stain Solver.

Why do this? Be sure to read the label on any paint you intend to
use. Everyone I've ever seen says: "Apply to a clean, dry surface."
I don't like using pressure washers on houses because they blast
water into cracks and behind the exterior surfaces if not used
properly. What's more, they can leave behind a thin film of dirt.

The house is currently painted red with green trim. Surprisingly it
doesn't look dirty at all. There's no visible dirt, dust or diesel
soot on the siding. The exact opposite is true about my home we're
selling in Cincinnati. I just washed it down last December and a
month ago, it had a coating of soot on it. Imagine how much of that
soot is in my lungs from all the years living in the city! But I
digress.

As I washed the house here, the water in the bucket turned red and
you could see the sun-damaged red pigment come out of the paint on
the siding as I rinsed it. Based on past experience cleaning the
solid color stain of my house in Cincinnati, the Stain Solver
aggressively removed the damaged finish. That's a good thing when
you're getting ready to repaint or stain.

Sharpening Chainsaw Chains

Up here in New Hampshire people are busy as beavers getting ready
for next winter. Now's the time to cut firewood as it needs time to
season and dry so it burns hot. To cut wood efficiently and
effectively, you need a sharp chain that cuts straight.

I tested a fantastic tool that sharpens chains used to cut logs and
firewood. It's the Timber Tuff upright bench mount chainsaw chain
sharpener. This tool works just like a compound miter saw. It has a
spinning abrasive disc that you can rotate and tilt to match the
grooves in cutting teeth of the chain.

If you've ever sharpened a chainsaw chain by hand, you know the

blade cutting the logs in a curve. This causes the blade to bind.

Staining Decks in New York - Test UPDATE!

Joan Rowland, from Lindenhurst, NY emailed me:

"We live on a river on long Island NY. How often do we need to
stain/seal our deck? We cleaned (not power washed) and wood-lifed
it last year and it looks a little faded. Is this an annual
project?"

Joan, it depends on the sealer / stain you decide to use. I used a
clear sealer last year that failed in just four months. I'm in the
midst of a test now to see how three different sealers work. In
rare cases you may get a deck stain/sealer to last three years.
Colored sealers, because of the pigments they contain, may fare
better for you, but these will fade over time from the direct
ultraviolet rays of the sun that blast deck surfaces in the middle
of the day.

I just taped the one-month video two days ago. I'll be loading that
video tonight and will share it with you next issue. After one
month, all the stains/sealers look pretty much the way they did
when applied. The original deck stain test video showing the beginning of the test
is available to watch.

I got my exercise last week and it continues today! I went up and
down from the garage to that attic no less than 40 times, maybe 50
as my son Tristan and I emptied the attic of years worth of
clutter. It was a rainy day, and the temperature in the attic
probably never got above 72 F. Just after sending this newsletter
to you, I'll then start to carry up old games and 25 years worth of
the Carter family life from some shelves in the basement storage
room.

This is all happening here in Cincinnati as I get ready to move
Kathy and Kelly up to NH later in the summer. The Victorian home
here I build back in 1986 has a traditional walk-up attic that
you'd expect to find in an older home, but not a modern one less
than 25-years old.

I framed the attic the old-fashioned way with rafters instead of
trusses. If you're building a new home or even a room addition, any
rough carpenter worth his salt can frame a roof almost as fast as
setting trusses. I say this assuming the roof is pretty simple.

If your builder or remodeler insists on using trusses, be aware you
can get special storage trusses and even full attic trusses that
allow you not to waste space up in the roof area.

Cutting Off Fingers

My ad salesman Loren sent me a video to watch that demonstrated a
cool table saw that can prevent injuries. The person being
interviewed said in the USA there are about 3,000 fingers and
thumbs cut off in table-saw accidents per year. That nearly ten per
day.

This saw is called the SawStop. The inventor got the idea back in
1999, and it took over four years before the saws went into
production.

Solar Attic Fans

As summer is just about here, attic temperatures will begin to
soar. It can easily get to 130 F and above in an attic. Several
years ago I installed two solar-powered attic fans in my attic that
were GUARANTEED to lower my attic temperature.

Funny Home-Improvement Stories

A month ago I introduced a new feature to the newsletter: Your
Funny and Embarrassing Home-Improvement Stories. Here's one that
was sent to me by Wendy from Centerville, OH:

When my husband I lived in our first little house, someone gave us
a humidifier for our furnace. My husband, never mechanical,
installed it himself, but it didn't work. For several days I heard
him down in the basement swearing. Finally we called a
professional. My husband told him of all the trials and
tribulations he had gone through. We all went down to the basement.
The furnace guy looked things over, then flipped the ON SWITCH! It
worked perfectly fine after that!

Wendy, I can relate to that. About two years ago I couldn't get my
scanner to work. I hadn't used it in quite a while and the button
on the front of the panel wouldn't turn the machine on. Frustrated,
I was about to go buy another scanner when my teenage son Tristan
asked me what was going on. Within seconds the scanner came alive.
Tristan gleefully exclaimed, "Dad, all you had to do was flip on
the Power switch right here on the side of the scanner."

Deck Stain Sealer Test

The day before I came back to Cincinnati from NH, it was a glorious
spring day on Loch Winnisquam. I decided to start a real test of
three wood deck/dock sealers. I had cleaned and sealed my cedar
dock back in June of 2009, but the nano-technology clear sealer I
used failed miserably. The wood turned gray within months.

I taped a video of the testing process. I urge you to watch it.
I'll do followup videos at two-month intervals this summer until
the dock comes out of the water. You'll see I had some fun taping
this video. Pay attention and listen for the harp.

If you've had tremendous success with a CLEAR wood deck sealer,
please email me with its name. I'm looking to test other brands
this summer. I want to know if you have used a clear PENETRATING
sealer that keeps the wood looking great for at least two years.
Send me closeup photos of your deck wood that looks great and tell
me the name of the sealer you used.

Mechanical Plumbing Vents

A friend remodeled his kitchen three years ago, and his sink ended
up in an island cabinet. Prior to that, the sink had a standard
vent line. The plumbing code allowed him to install a mechanical
vent in the sink base cabinet. I've never been a fan of these vents
as I always felt the spring mechanism in the vent would fail or
slowly fail over time.

Sure enough, his sink has started to drain slowly because the vent
is failing. You can vent an island sink with a loop vent that works
well. Make sure your plumber does this in lieu of one of these
inferior mechanical vents.

Chain Saw Chain Sharpener Test

I'll be finishing the testing of what appears to be a magical and
affordable chain-saw chain sharpening tool this weekend. I'll share
those results in the next newsletter. If you use a chain saw,
you'll want to read this review.

me of what happens each time I have a sale on any product.

Yesterday, May 1, 2010 my son and I drove 15.5 hours from NH to
Cincinnati, OH. He finished his second year of college the day
before and came back to Cincinnati to be with many of his high
school buddies.

It's spring, and wow were the bugs out. They were especially brutal
through upstate New York. It reminded me of the opening few minutes
of the movie Men in Black where that alien smuggler was driving
that van in the desert night.

Overnight here in Cincinnati, it rained. It was raining when I got
up. That was a blessing for bug removal as the constant saturation
and humidity rehydrated the bug carcasses.

I went outdoors in a light rain with my dog Lady about an hour ago,
she love chasing the stream of water from the hose, to take
advantage of this gift from Mother Nature. With a little soapy
water and a sponge, I got rid of all the bug bodies with very
little effort.

This is pretty much the way you can get rid of many stains. You
just need to rehydrate the dried deposit. Rehydrate simply means
adding water back into the mix. Some things don't rehydrate well.
In those cases, you need my Stain Solver. More on that below.

All too often I get a desperate email from a person who was
impatient and ruined a surface. Usually the damage happens by
immediately scrubbing the stain instead of allowing water to
naturally soften it. This aggressive behavior, mixed with an
abrasive cleaner, can spell disaster for counter tops, acrylic
showers and tubs, painted surfaces, even glass.

I'll often use a paper towel to rehydrate a stain. I saturate the
towel with water and then lay it on top of the stain. I push the
towel against the surface like wallpaper. You can do this on
vertical surfaces as well as flat. Let it soak for 30 minutes or an
hour. Don't do this on surfaces harmed by water.

Deck Sealer Test

In the last issue I talked about how I was going to do a test of
three deck sealers on my cedar boat dock. I applied the sealers on
Friday, and taped the video doing it!

I'm hoping the video will be post produced this weekend, so I can
share it next week. Wait until you see this video. The difference
between the two *clear* sealers was like night and day. I also had
a little fun in the video. Good thing I don't make my money as a
comedian. I'd be living in a cardboard hovel.

Mountain Lion

Last weekend I met a neighbor who lives very close to the woods I
own in NH. He showed me photos of mountain lion tracks in the snow
taken not far from my property. Yikes! I thought those bad boys
were west of the Mississippi!

A quick Google search shows that these beasts are absolutely being
spotted east of the Mississippi. Read this six-year-old story from
USA Today.

Overstock Stain Solver Sale

Last Thursday I told you about the mistake we made in packing too
many four-pound boxes of Stain Solver for the huge spring sale. I
MUST get these overstock items out of the new warehouse.

I used the Stain Solver to clean my dock before I shot the videos about the deck

A man from California asked if it would clean dog *poop* from a new
white carpet. My answer, " ... in about five seconds!" Yes, it can
take stains out of carpets in seconds. I cleaned numerous stains
from my daughter's carpet back in March. It gets rid of red wine
stains, grape juice, Kool-Aid, orange and red cream soda, etc.

One customer I talked with on the phone the past few days told me
how it completely restored upholstered chairs the arms of which had
gotten soiled.

I urge you to act now. I honestly have no idea when the next Stain
Solver promotion will be. This sale only happened because we made a
mistake, one that I'm pretty sure will never happen again.

I'll be bouncing back and forth between Cincinnati, OH and NH the
next few months as we prepare to move Kathy and Kelly up here to
NH. I'm pretty excited about that as you can imagine.

There are a few minor projects I'm working on here at the NH house
to get it all spiffy for Kathy. We'll be doing lots of interior
painting and the painting the exterior of the house as well.

My daughter Meghan is allergic to many things, and we recently
tested the Harmony line of paint from Sherwin Williams. The odor in
other paints really bothered her in the past, but she had no issues
with this new Harmony interior paint. You may want to try it if
paint fumes bother you or someone else in your home. Other brands
that you may like surely have a similar low-odor paint. Check the
labels.

Deck Sealer Test

Today I'm starting a test of three deck sealers. When it warms up,
I'll be cleaning two boards way out at the end of my dock with my
Stain Solver oxygen bleach. Look below for a quick sale on the
four-pound size. It's a long story.

Last year I cleaned and sealed the dock, but the sealer product I
used failed miserably. It still blocks water, but the clear sealant
didn't block the damaging UV rays of the sun. The gorgeous cedar
turned gray within months.

This sealer was made by a company whose products have always been
superior, and this was the new nano-technology clear sealer. I
wondered if I got a bad batch.

I called the company and talked last week with the head chemist. We
agreed that I didn't do anything wrong, and that the best thing to
do is a side-by-side test to see if the same thing happens again.

The chemist thought that UV light bouncing from the water could
have been extreme and caused the failure. I don't see how that's
possible as the UV light bounces off the water at the complimentary
angle it is hitting the water. Thus it goes back up to the sky or
anything else it hits. I can see the reflected UV rays hitting the
underside of the dock, but not the top.

He also thought that the moisture content of the wood planks was
higher because the wood is only 14 inches or so above the surface
of the water. I was quick to point out that six months out of the
year the dock boards are up on shore stacked so that they are dry
and protected from the sun.

I'll tape a video while we apply the sealers so you can watch me
test two clear products and one that has a pigment. We'll know in
about three months how the sealers are doing. I'll report back with
a follow-up video.

Sediment Clogging Faucets

This past week I've received at least three emails from people who
did a plumbing repair that caused them to have to turn off the
water in the house.

When they turned the water back on, all of a sudden water is
restricted or stops flowing out of certain faucets or fixtures.

Sediment in the pipes is broken loose when you turn on the water at
the main valve. This sediment then clogs the small ports in faucet
cartridges, the flow restrictors in shower heads and faucet
aerators.

You can minimize these issues by SLOWLY turning the water back on
making sure ALL hose bibs are open on the outside of your home.
This way some or most of the sediment is ejected out of these
faucets. This trick works most of the time. Remember, open the main
valve VERY slowly to minimize the hard rush of water through your
pipes.

Unscrew all faucet aerators before you run water out of the
faucets. Flush the lines, then re-install the aerators.

It's well documented at my website. All you have to do is go there

The bottom line is I finally found a few that only let water in the
gutter. Many, many other types of gutter guards do let small
organic debris into the gutter creating a layer of muck over time.

Annette Needs a Great Roofer

Annette Rodgers of Wappingers Falls, NY wrote to me yesterday:

I need new siding & a new roof on my home. Since my husband is
deceased I have found that contractors tend to confuse and expect
me to just follow their directions. My home is almost 30 yrs. old.
But has good bones so to speak. How can I find an honest contractor
that will strive to do the best in quality and price without going
overboard or too cheap? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Had Annette been a subscriber two months ago, she would have been
aware of the Roofing Checklist I developed over 15 years ago that
shows you how to find the pro roofer in your city or town.

The bottom line is that pros can be found in just about every town,
you just have to go to where they buy their materials. For example,
here in New Hampshire, I just discovered an amazing lumber yard /
home-improvement center in Bristol, NH. It's R.P. Williams & Sons.

I was in there three days ago buying some 1/2-inch steel rebar.
While I was in the store no less than four contractors stopped in
to buy material. I was only there for 10 minutes! Imagine how many are there in a day.

If you talk with the manager or owner of the business, they know
the best contractors. You just have to know the questions to ask. I
cover all that in my checklists for every project.

Washington DC Trip

I'll be in Washington DC on June 14th and 15th as part of a
initiative to help Congress discover more about how advertising
really works on the Internet. I'll have a small opportunity to get
together then if you live near or in DC. Contact me asap if you
want to get together.

But I have a huge favor to ask. I'll be driving there from
Cincinnati on my way back to NH. I'll have my Super Duty Ford F-250
4x4 towing a 6x10 utility trailer. Suffice it to say the total
length is about 37 feet!

For obvious reasons, I can't park downtown where I'll be staying.
Can I rent your driveway if you live close to the subway line? I
figure I'll park in the burbs and take the subway into town for the
two days, then come back and get the truck and trailer.

Chain Saw Sharpening Test

Today I expect to take delivery of a fantastic tool that sharpens
chain-saw blades. If you do it by hand, you invariably change the
pitch of the teeth causing the saw to cut in a curve. This causes
the blade to bind.

Anyway, watch for that review SOON!!

Four-Pound Stain Solver Sale

Three weeks ago we had the annual Spring Stain Solver Sale. All

Latest News

I've been on the road the past two weeks. It was a combination
business/pleasure trip. The first week I spent with two great
friends Steve and Rusty as we drove from Los Angeles, CA to Zion
National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, the Grand Canyon,
Monument Valley and then on to Albuquerque, NM. Steve, Rusty and I
are members of a secret Internet entrepreneur group that meet twice
a year. Our Spring meeting this year was at the Hyatt Tamaya Resort
in Albuquerque, NM.

We also stopped and hiked through a slot canyon near the Glen
Canyon Dam that forms Lake Powell. It was the Lower Antelope Slot
Canyon near Page, AZ. The slot canyon was absolutely amazing. Here
are links to a few Google Picasa photo albums of the first five
days of the trip. Thanks Google for this great service!

But one of the best highlights of the entire trip happened this
past Saturday at the end of the trip. You know that old saying,
"Save the best for last." I did just that by planning a visit with
one of my oldest subscribers, Ms. Patricia Allen. What I mean by
oldest is the length of time Pat has been a subscriber. We tried to
set the exact date, but couldn't. However, we know for a fact that
Pat subscribed around 1998 or possibly 1997. That's just after I
started this newsletter.

I truly enjoy visiting subscribers and try to go out of my way to
have these meetings. Thanks Pat for allowing me to spend the
afternoon and evening with you! My friend Rusty and his wife Ann
were also at dinner with us.

Campbell Hausfeld Pressure Washer

A month ago I got to test a wonderful pressure washer made by
Campbell Hausfeld. It was model PW2770. I found it easy to use and
it started with ease. I did have to fill the engine with oil before
I started it, but that was no big deal. Be sure you always check
the oil level before you start any equipment that has an engine.

The machine comes with five different tips from 0 degrees all the
way up to 40 degrees. It produced 2,750 PSI of pressure which can
really blast away algae and dirt from masonry surfaces. I used the
machine to clean my brick patios. I loved the easy way to connect
the hose to the machine as well as the cleaning wand.

My only complaint was the design of the handle. It seems to me that
it was on the wrong side of the machine. To move the pressure
washer from point to point, you have to lift up on the handle like
a wheelbarrow. I found that to be very awkward. I tested another
Campbell Hausfeld pressure washer a few years back, and the handle
design was completely opposite. You just had to tilt the handle
back like a two-wheeled hand cart to move the machine. I found that
older design much more user friendly.

All in all I give this pressure washer two hammers up! It's a great
buy and well made.

Painting a Tile Backsplash

Nicole from Teaneck, NJ emailed me asking:

"I would like to paint over the ceramic tile that makes up my
kitchen back splash. The previous owners never grouted the tile so
I'm wondering if I should apply the grout before I paint the tiles
or after? I'd like to apply it after so I don't have to worry about
painting the grout lines separately but I'm not sure if the process
will scratch the newly applied paint. Please help. Thanks!"

Nicole, I would paint the tile first then grout it. Paint is very
soft, especially if it's not cured. To protect the paint from the
grouting process, I would apply two or three coats of water-based
clear urethane before grouting.

Allow the paint to dry for three days before you apply the first coat of urethane.

Then allow the urethane to cure for at least a week before grouting. If you
scratch the urethane while grouting, you should be able to touch it
up with a small brush and not see the scuff mark.

Humorous and Embarrassing Home-Improvement Moments

I'm starting a new project. I want to collect hundreds or thousands
of funny and embarrassing home-improvement moments. I don't know
about you, but with the stress of everyday life getting worse, I
feel we need more laughter each week. I'll share one of these
stories each week with you in this newsletter and package all of
them to share in different volumes as time goes on. I can't do this
alone! I need your stories. Submit one here.

I'll start it off with this true story. Yes, even I have had my
share of embarrassing moments.

When I first started my tiny remodeling company just after getting
out of college in 1974, I was hired to do my first crown molding
job in a tiny breakfast nook. How hard could that be I thought. It
was obvious that you just cut the wood trim at 45-degree angles and
nail it up.

Well, no matter how I put it in the saw and cut it at a 45-degree
angle, the gaps where two pieces met in a corner were so big you
could taxi a 747 jet airliner through them. Here's a photo of what
one of the joints looked like. Ugh!!

After two hours of frustration, the woman who hired me politely
asked me to pack up my tools and go home. I was mortified. Instead
of going home with my tail between my legs, I went directly to the
public library. In about ten minutes I discovered exactly what I
was doing wrong.

That event was the seed from which my Crown Molding Ebook grew, as
I knew other people would make the same mistake I made that morning.

Stains on Siding From Nails

Speaking of photographs, I recently solved a problem for a visitor
to my website in about five seconds. I was able to do this because
he sent me a close-up photo of stains on his wood siding. This
gentleman though the stains were from the caulk or spackle used to
cover the nails.

The photos clearly showed the stains were caused by rusting nails.
If you want to use the best nails for exterior siding, invest in
stainless steel nails. At the very least, use double hot-dipped hot
galvanized nails. Here are links to a few past columns where I
discuss the difference between galvanized and stainless-steel nails.

Grumblings About Sales

Over the past two weeks I received several gripes about the extra
emails I've been sending concerning the checklist sales and Stain
Solver sales. While at my secret conference, I discovered one of my
very close friends wrote a column at his website to explain why he
has ads and such on his site and newsletter. It was one of those V8
moments, and I slapped myself on the head. Duh! So I wrote this
column answering Dan one of my subscribers. I'd be very interested
in your feedback.

Before you respond, know that there were a grand total of four
complaints about the excessive emails and there were thousands of
people who took advantage of the promotions. If you want to know my
opinion, that tells me all I need to know.

Applications for Smart Phones

Last week I received an email from Marvin Windows about their new
application for iPhones. It's called Window Shopping. Here's what
it said in their press release about the software:

The Window Shopping app is a tool to help homeowners plan basic
designs for windows and doors, inside and outside the house. After
taking a photo of an interior or exterior space that could use an
upgrade, the app user can choose from nearly 50 resizable photos of
Marvin windows and doors, arrange them over the photo, and save or
send the photo to share with friends, family or a local Marvin
dealer.

I downloaded it with ease on my iPhone. But I was in a hotel room
in Phoenix and not able to aim it at one of my house windows.

Speaking of apps, I'm getting ready to develop some AsktheBuilder

Stain Solver Sale Almost Over

If you're a new subscriber, this is an unusual Sunday broadcast. If
you've been around the block or two with me, then you know that
it's Spring and that means decks, docks, patios, tile floors, etc.
all have to be cleaned.

I have many columns and videos, too many to list, at the website
showing you how to safely do all these tasks.

In each of these, you'll see me using oxygen bleach. Every Spring,
I have an annual sale on my brand of this magical product, Stain
Solver. Oxygen bleach is a green and organic cleaner that's been in
my store for over ten years BEFORE this current fad of Green
Products hit the market. Mine happens to be one of the most
powerful made in the USA.

I did something different this year with my sale, and sure enough,
it's working.

Last year we sold more of the four-pound size than any other. But
this year, because the discount increases the more you buy, the 16
and 50-pound sizes are flying off the shelves. In fact, a few days
ago we set a new record for the number of 50-pound sizes shipped in
one day. I can tell you the UPS truck's bumper was much closer to

Chinese Drywall Update

Last issue I talked about the Chinese Drywall problems. I tried to
create a link from the newsletter to a USA Today story, but the
link would not work. Boy, did I hear about that!

You were probably one who wanted to know how to identify if you
have this very bad product.

Within hours of the newsletter arriving in your email box, I had
Roger create a Chinese Drywall page at my website for you.
Go there and see all the outbound links to things that will help
you.

If you want to see if you have Chinese drywall in your home, the
only way I know how is to find a factory butt edge along the 4-foot
side of a sheet of the product. See if the remaining part of the
label shows it to be of Chinese origin.

These labels on drywall are shown at the page of my website, but
understand that only part of the label remains after the drywall is
installed. This remnant label is up against the studs, so you have
to do destructive work to find one.

I suggest taking off the baseboard on a long wall. Remember, sheets
of drywall are usually 8, 10 and 12-feet long. Look down at the
bottom of the wall for a butt seam where two piece of drywall meet
on the wall. If you don't have a long wall, then there's a great
chance you'll find the label edge in a corner.

Make a small cut with a hand-held drywall saw to be able to get at
a small piece of drywall. The piece needs to be at least 6-inches
tall. Look at the back of the drywall for the label. See if it's a
Chinese product or one made by a US Company.

I'll be on a plane headed West in a few hours for two weeks of R&R
mixed with some high-powered business. A week from today I'll be
attending the spring conference with many of my close Internet
entrepreneur friends. This next week will be spent visiting some
National Parks and other scenic spots in the Southwest that I've
not been to in over 40 years.

At the end of the trip I'll be visiting one of my original
subscribers. I've communicated on the phone and via email with
Patricia for over 13 years, but never seen her. For years I've
promised to stop and see her. She's given me permission to do a
video together, so I can't wait for that. I'll upload that video
and share it once I'm back.

If you're a new subscriber, I try to always carve out time when I
travel to meet you. I'm doing it again in Albuquerque, NM next
week. I had planned for next Monday at a Starbucks, but that was
before I looked at my itinerary.

It's impossible for me to be at that location that early in the
day. I'll not yet have arrived in town. Sorry for the oversight! If
you do want to get together next week in ABQ, email me and we'll
figure out a time and place.

Chinese Drywall

This past week, Dave, a subscriber who lives in Florida, gave me a
second heads up about the severe issue with Chinese drywall. Dave
first brought this to my attention many months ago, and I broke
that story here in the newsletter.

The latest news is that houses with this
material need to be gutted according to the most recent directive
from the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

This drywall contains fly ash from Chinese power plants. The
trouble is some of these plants burn high-sulfur coal and the ash
has way too much sulfur in it. It then off-gases hydrogen sulfide
which corrodes copper wiring, and just about any other metal found
in homes like air-conditioning coils, gas piping, etc.

This drywall streamed into the USA a few years back when there was
a huge demand to rebuild from back-to-back natural disasters. The
Southeast part of the USA seems to be the hardest hit.

What a mess. I sincerely hope you don't have this product in your
home.

Plastic Shims

Last month I was in Cincinnati, OH getting my house ready to sell.
While I was gone, a manufacturer sent me a sample packet of plastic
shims to my office in New Hampshire. They're called Handi-Shim.

While pretty pricey compared to a bundle of traditional cedar shims
you'd pick up a lumber yard, these can come in handy if you need to
space things evenly. A traditional shim is a long wedge that gives
you infinite adjusting capability. These plastic shims don't have
that. They are flat and come in different thicknesses. You can make
adjustments to the 1/32nd of an inch.

They're great in places where you can't afford a shim to compress
or rot over time. I'm sure I'll use them in any number of places.

Annual Spring Stain Solver Sale

I've talked about this for weeks, and it's now time. Each spring I
have the biggest sale of the year on my Stain Solver. Last year you
nearly crushed us with orders. Every person who was associated with
AsktheBuilder and could fog a mirror was in the warehouse mixing,

Faux Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Dixie Glover from Cowarts, AL emailed me a day ago. She asked:

I have some light-colored cabinets that are not real wood. I want
to paint them to look like they are cherry wood. Someone has told
me to use a rose/mauve/pink paint with a dark plum glaze over it.
Do you think this will work or do you have any suggestions?

Dixie, faux painting like this can be done. I was lucky enough a
few years ago to watch a master do this. His name is Gary Lord.
There are many artists and master painters that can do what Gary
does. Gary has several books you may want to read to help you.

The bottom line is you absolutely can produce this effect. How hard
will it be? Well, it's absolutely going to take some practice. But
that's the neat thing. You can practice on a cabinet door until you
get the technique down, or choose to practice on a smooth piece of
plywood. Once you get the colors and graining you want, then do all
the cabinets. Take before and after photos so we can all see how it
comes out. Good luck!

Gutter Guards

Several weeks ago I mentioned that I'd be talking about spring
tasks. You may think cleaning gutters is something for the Fall. In
my experience of testing gutter guard products over the past 12
years or so, Spring is when most of them fail.

You see, deciduous trees produce flowers each spring that in turn,
create the seeds. These flower blossoms rain down on roofs and end
up in gutters. It created a huge issue at my Cincinnati house, and
I was not alone. Over the years I've tested MANY gutter guards, and

I've never been paid to do a test. You can read all the columns about

this at my website if you just type:

For years I tried to discover the gutter guard that wouldn't fail
in this situation. I found it about three years ago. You can watch
two videos that document this test. I apologize in advance about
the tie-dye shirt in the one video. I happen to like bright colors
and tie-dye.

Since the last newsletter, I've been busy. We did the final push
here at my Cincinnati house getting it ready for the first Open
House which was this past Sunday. My good friend Roger worked here
for three days helping pack up my office and do any number of other
tasks. Without his help, I was doomed. Kathy and I are both beat as
you might expect. I know Roger was tired too!

Selling My Cincinnati, OH Home - Who Wants the AsktheBuilder Home?

If you've been a subscriber for the past year, you know I've been
getting the house ready for sale as I've been in New Hampshire
while Kathy was here in Cincinnati with Kelly. Both come to NH in August. Be sure to look at the photos and videos.

The Cincinnati Enquirer did a feature article on the house two
weeks ago. The reporter, Amy Howell, did a magnificent job
capturing the back story.

Here's the bottom line: You can buy the house. As you can imagine,
it's truly one-of-a-kind. Or, if you know someone who wants it and
they buy it, I'll pay you a finder's fee. All they have to do is
identify you as a subscriber to my newsletter. I'll pay you a one
percent finders fee. Do the math. That's a big number.

The house is in excellent condition, as you might expect, and shows
really well. Be sure to look at all the pages at the website.

Home Inspectors - Be Careful Out There!

While on the subject of my house, I'm confident the buyer will
order a house inspection. No worries, as there are no major defects
in my home.

But what if the wrong inspector shows up? Overnight I got a very
troubling email from a home inspector named George that lives /
works in New York. I'd prefer not to tell you his last name or the
city for the obvious reasons. Here's what he sent to me:

"Mine is not a question but a comment. The present day fiber cement siding was started to be made in the mid 60 when asbestos fell apart. You are mis leading people when you tell them it has been around for 90 years, The product we see today is a blend of cement , cellulose, and silcate. It does and will wick water if not sealed at cuts. It will fall apart and turn into mush if exposed to
prolonged or constant moisture contact I worry as a Home Inspector when I see information like this. Please rethink these statements. I teach home inspectors, one of my classes is on Fiber Cement siding products."

So what's the error here? He went to my website where I have at
least four or five columns about fiber-cement siding. The first
few were written about ten years ago and document the history of
the product. Here's the first column I wrote about fiber-cement siding.

You'll note in the column I clearly state that the original fiber
cement used asbestos. Then at a later time, asbestos was removed
and wood fibers substituted in its place.

Within the past two years I wrote the lastest column on
fiber-cement siding talking about how it's having problems. This is
what the inspector talked about in his email to me.

So what's the problem? In my opinion, this inspector -
and he says he teaches other inspectors - isn't very thorough or he
misinterprets things he sees. I never said in my columns that the
original siding had wood fibers. I clearly state in the other one
there are moisture issues.

What if your inspector makes mistakes like this while looking at a
home you're buying? George gave me his phone number and said I can
call. You bet I will today.

The first thing I'll be asking him is if he carries any certification. I'll wager you one pint of mocha chip ice cream from Aglamesis that George is *not* ASHI certified.

Pearl from Trinidad Needs Tile Advice

I just got an email from Pearl Bhagan who lives in Trinidad, West
Indies. Here's what she wrote:

"We have made a tub enclosure from cement board. Other than using tiles over the cement board, what can I use that would look
spectacular? Thank you so much."

Pearl sent a photo of a dramatic layered platform with steps
leading up to the tub. She's mixing two different tiles and
granite. So there's lots going on.

I suggested that she might consider accent tile in the field tile
above the tub area. There are colored tile you can use for this as
well as textured tile with unique patterns. You can also create
your own design like my daughter did for her tub/shower area. Go to

Albuquerque Meetup!

Last week I announced I'll be in sunny Albuquerque, NM April
16-20th. You and I can get together! I'll be in town for a secret
Internet conference. My initial invitation may not have been
enticing because I talked about golfing or lounging around the pool

Construction Details

I get requests every week from visitors to the website about how
things should be built or connected when you are doing building
or remodeling. For example, you may want to know how a deck post
should be anchored to a concrete pier. You may want to know the
best pier design. A pier is a vertical column that transfers the
weight of a structure to solid rock or good bearing soil.

You may want to know how to frame a wall. What does a door header
look like? How many studs do you have under a header at a door or
window? Maybe you want to know how to pour a footer or build a
block wall and need a simple drawing of its cross section. Does
this make sense?

Anyway, I've decided to build a collection of these construction details and sell

Happy Spring! It's official, Spring is here and now's the time to
start thinking of all those projects you'll be doing this year. I'm
here to help as best I can. The next few issues of this newsletter
will focus on things that I hear about in the spring: Deck
cleaning, pressure washing and, believe it or not, gutter guards.

Painting Vinyl Siding

Bill Hutchin from Flemington, NJ wrote:

I've read your article about painting vinyl siding. My question
is: Should the siding be brush painted or sprayer painted?

Bill, you can do it either way. If you decide to spray it, you
better work on a calm day. You'll also spend lots of time covering
all the things you don't want paint on like windows, doors, etc.

If you've never used a sprayer before, be sure you practice with it
until you get the paint consistency correct and the proper
technique of using the tool. Once you master it, they do a great
job.

Be sure you use a paint that has a combination of urethane and
acrylic resins. These will bond best to the vinyl. Sears
Weatherbeater ULTRA and Sherwin Williams Duration both contain
these the last time I checked. Finally, you really need to clean
the siding well. Liquid dish soap and water with a scrub brush or
great sponge should do well. Don't try to do this with a pressure
washer as you can easily get water behind the siding.

Ask Me, but ...

You might have a misconception about Ask the Builder. Let me tell
you what happened last week to me. A few days after a subscriber
got my newsletter, he hit "Reply" and asked me a series of
questions that would have required me to type a response perhaps
10,000 or even 20,000 words.

The project he needed help with was enormous and he pretty much
expected me to guide him through it because, after all, I'm Ask the
Builder. When I told him that I didn't offer that platinum service,
he was pretty upset.

As you might expect, no one has that kind of time, well, at least I
don't. I do get many, many questions each day, but most can be
answered in one sentence - or the answers are already at the
website in a past column or video of mine. Please always take your
time to scour the website before you ask a question.

I know you may not believe this, but the ads you will undoubtedly
see at my website often are the exact solution to your problems.
Why? Because they are contextual. This means that the ads match
almost identically to the products I describe in my columns and
videos. Ignoring those ads can cost you hundreds, if not thousands,
of dollars.

Deck Cleaning

Ten days ago I gave four talks at the Cincinnati Home and Garden
show. It was loads of fun and the last one was packed. The audience
even clapped when it was over. That made me feel like it was worth
it to come 1,000 miles to give the talks.

I promised JoAnn Kirchgessner that I'd mention her. She attended
the show with two friends. JoAnn is the hair stylist that cut my
hair a few years ago. She owns "A Little Off the Top" on Harrison
Avenue in Cincinnati. JoAnn, there's less and less to take off the
top lately, especially near the back!

One of the things I talked about on one of the days was the issue
with BAD information out there. You can get bad home-improvement
information on the radio, TV, magazines, and newspaper columns (not
mine!).

The day of my first talk, The Cincinnati Enquirer had a column in
it from Martha Stewart about cleaning decks. It's syndicated like
mine, but I had no idea this diva had any knowledge of how to
properly clean a deck. After all, she's a cook right? Oh, and she
knows how to do extravagant decorations.

Well, I was right. She has no idea. I read part of her column at
one of the presentations. In it she, actually her ghost writer,
said to mix chlorine bleach with water to clean the deck. WRONG!
Chlorine bleach is toxic to all surrounding plants and trees, will
take the color out of the wood, and it destroys the lignin that
holds wood fibers together. It's also corrosive.

You want to use Oxygen Bleach instead. Oxygen bleach will not hurt
plants, restores the wood to it's original color and will not
accelerate corrosion of any fasteners or structural framing
connectors - yes, chlorine bleach will do that.

Where do you get oxygen bleach? I happen to sell the most powerful
in the USA and in a week I'll be announcing the huge annual Spring
Sale. Watch for that next week. You do not want to miss this sale.
Why? Because we only do it once a year.

Pressure Washing

I can't tell you how many wood decks I've seen ruined by pressure
washers. I've even taped a video about this. It's a little corny,
as it was taped to play on the local ABC-TV affiliate in Cincinnati
about nine years ago. They wanted me to be as entertaining as
possible when I taped with them, thus the wardrobe you'll see.

Pressure washers are great machines. In fact, I'm about to begin
testing a great one from Campbell Hausfeld. I'll have that review
for you next week.

But a pressure washer can cause severe damage to wood - if used
improperly. The concentrated stream of water will easily erode the
soft spring wood that's between the darker bands of hard summer
wood.

Be very, very careful if you decide to use a pressure washer on a
wood surface. Start with as wide a tip as you can and don't use
anything less than a 25-degree tip.

Travel News

When I travel, I try to carve out time to visit with you. I'll be
in Albuquerque, NM from April 12-16th. I'll be at the Hyatt Tamaya
resort for a conference. If you're a golfer, you can play with me
on Tuesday and Friday if you choose. There are four of us playing
on Tuesday, but only two of us on Friday. If you don't care to
chase white balls, then we can possibly meet one night for liquid
refreshments at the resort and soak in the hot tub. Email me soon
so I can adjust my calendar.

Latest News

I've been chugging away at getting the Cincinnati house ready for
the big Open House in less than three weeks. This past week I made
tons of progress. My productivity was high because I knew where
each tool was that I needed.

I can't say enough about storing tools. If you leave your tools
scattered all over the place, you waste tons of time looking for
what you need. This is one reason I'm a big fan of Rick Grove's
Wall Control system that allows me to store tools on metal pegboard
so that I can see what I have.

I'm also a fan of those open storage pails, boxes, buckets, etc.
that have countless pockets and slots for hand tools, pencils,
razor knives, rasps, screwdrivers, etc. There are many available,
and you can't go wrong with just about any brand.

Garden Tool Storage Outdoors

If you store garden tools outdoors in a garage or shed, and you
live where it gets cold in the winter, you'll have to deal with
rust. Steel and iron tools will start to rust because of
condensation that forms on the tools with changes in humidity and
temperature.

There are any number of ways to deal with this, but a very light
coat o oil will go a long way to prevent rust. As you get out your
tools this spring, you'll probably note a fine film of rust on
shovels, rakes, spades, etc. That could have been prevented had you
cleaned the tools in the fall, allowed them to dry and then wipe
down the metal parts with an oily rag. Be sure to burn the rag once
your done. Spontaneous combustion is a reality.

Tile Backsplashes and Electrical Outlets

Lamar Hutchinson of Loreauville, LA wrote to me:

I am installing some 1x1 glass tiles on mesh backing as a kitchen
backsplash. There are several outlets in the area of installation,
ranging from electrical to phone. My questions is: do I leave
enough space to have the outlets removed and after the glass tile
is installled, so I need to put outlet spacers in so I can bring
those outlets flush with the tile?

Lamar, I believe I understand your dilemma. I tackle this issue by
backing out the screws that hold the electrical outlet to the box
inside the wall. Be sure to turn of the circuit breaker that
controls any of these devices you're working with. You need to get
the outlet so that it sits on top of the tile. This means you cut
the tile pieces so they are right at the edges of the electrical
box in the wall.

Once the glue sets, you then tighten the outlet so the little round
or square tabs contact the tile. Your method, if I understand it,
will achieve the same result, but with a little more work. You'll
have to have an assortment of spacers to get the outlet exactly
where it needs to be. My method eliminates this guesswork.

Pocket Door Tip

Last year I remodeled our master bathroom. Kathy's closet has a
pocket door that was just the thing to save very valuable space in
the bathroom. The pocket door allowed us to place the opening to
the closet immediately adjacent to the bathroom door.

Had we used a traditional swinging door, the two doors would
undoubtedly bang into one another.

One of the things I do when installing a pocket door is use
decorative brass screws on the top and side door jambs. These
screws allow me to remove the jambs in seconds should I have to
adjust or remove the door.

To make this process painless, I also prepaint the jambs before
installing them. If you install raw wood and allow the painter to
paint them in place, the paint can cause the jambs to stick to the
door casing.

If you have a remodeling project coming up or even a new house,
take a hard look at pocket doors. They are great if you use the
pocket-door mounting hardware and track I use!

Appearance This Weekend

If you live near or in Cincinnati, OH, I'll be speaking on Friday,

Ice Dam Damage, Contractors and Limited Money

Janet Murray emailed me over the weekend lamenting about water
damage caused by the heavy snow that hit the East Coast last month.
Her ceilings and walls and her mother's were damaged by dripping
water.

She wanted to know who to call in to fix the work and how to make
sure that she doesn't get ripped off. You may face the same anxiety
when you go to hire a contractor.

I told Janet that the first step is to consider modifying the roof
IF she intends to live in the house for a period of time. You can
retrofit a roof with the ice-dam membranes by removing the lower
courses of shingles on a roof. It's not easy, but it's possible.
You want to do this so that you'll never have the leak again. Why
patch the ceilings and walls to only have to do it again in the
future?

I then told her that she could possibly find a handyman who could
do the repairs and needed painting.

Just after sending the reply, I got a similar email from a woman
who was wringing her hands about not being able to make a mistake
when hiring a contractor. Funds were limited and she had to get the
work done right the first time.

That's when the lightbulb went off. For over fifteen years I've

Liquid Wrench Six Pack

After driving back in the snow and salt from New Hampshire to
Cincinnati, OH, I tried to get the key in the padlocks on my
trailer. Forget about it. The key slot was filled with salt
deposits. With great effort, I was able to dissolve the salt and
finally get the key to work.

Yesterday I got a sample pack of six new cans of Liquid Wrench
products that may have prevented the agony. Imagine if I needed to
open the trailer while I was on the road!

In this sample pack are six different cans of lubricating spray.
There's penetrating oil, lube spray, regular oil, dry lubricant,
chain lube, silicon spray, and even a white lithium grease spray.

I'm about to try these products on several things around here, not
the least of which are the rollers and hinges on my garage doors.

Latest News

I survived the mini-hurricane in New Hampshire late last week. It
was an epic Nor'easter. The wind really picked up after 10 p.m. on
Thursday night. Earlier in the evening the wind-driven rain found a
breech in the flashing around the top of a french door in the lower
level of the house. I didn't build the home I'm in, so I'll be
fixing that leak when the weather gets better.

I'm back in Cincinnati, OH now for the entire month of March. The
mission is to cross off all the tiny honey-do list items that have
persisted here just as in any house. These to-do tasks need to be
completed by March 28th, the day of the one-and-only open house.

I've made great headway the past two days completing jobs. You'll
hear more about this in the upcoming weeks. If you know of someone
who might want to purchase this great home I built with my bare
hands, let me know. It's a four bedroom Queen Anne Victorian that
looks 125 years old, but was built in 1986.

Storing Paint

One of the things I'm doing here is touching up small places on
both the walls and woodwork that have the traditional wear and tear
dings and scratches. Fortunately when I painted these surfaces over
the years, I saved the leftover paint.

I discovered many years ago it's a mistake to save the paint in the
cans from the paint store. Not only do you have to deal with lots
of air in the cans, but you also have an issue with rust at the lid
lip. The excess air in a paint usually causes a nasty skin to form
on top of the paint.

What I've discovered that works best for me, and you may have an
even better idea, is to use the inexpensive food-storage containers
you can buy in the grocery store. They come in different sizes and
the trick is to fill one nearly to the top with the leftover paint.

If the paint is water-based, I always add an ounce or two of water
at the top of the paint before sealing the lid. This prevents the
skinning effect. Using a permanent marker, and I do this before
filling the container, I write on the side of the container the
room the paint was used in, the mfr., paint type, paint name,
formula if available, etc.

Let me tell you how well this works. Yesterday I had to touch up
many spots in my living room. I painted this room about ten years
ago. If you were here with me today, I'd bet you $100 you couldn't
find one spot where I touched up the walls. The paint matched
perfectly and it's consistency was just like the day I opened the
original can. Suffice it to say I store this leftover paint indoors
at about 65 F.

Stain Solver News

If you're a new subscriber, and I have about 1,300 now per *week*,
you probably don't know about Stain Solver. It's a magical oxygen

About a month ago I wrote a column for my newspaper clients talking
about using oxygen bleach to clean ceramic tile floor grout. Two
weeks ago The Washington Post newspaper ran this column. Talk about

shopping cart. In a little over 96 hours, we got over 500 orders
from just the readers of this column in the DC area. I had not
anticipated this kind of response.

I immediately had the idea that I should tape a video showing you
exactly how this magical powder really cleans floor tile grout. We
taped the video one afternoon two weeks ago and had it loaded the
next day at the Stain Solver site. It's right there as soon as you
land on the home page.

I urge you to watch the video to see how it works. You really need
to watch the last ten seconds of the video. What I said the entire
video was unscripted - especially the last few lines. If you're not
smiling at the end of that video, you must be in a really bad mood
today.

Finally, there are hundreds of uses of this product around your
home. One of the craziest uses is to dislodge that pesky brown
caramelized grease you often see on the outside of pots and pans. I
experimented one day soaking a pan in the Stain Solver solution for
about six hours. Lo and behold using a Dobie pad and some elbow
grease, 90% of the encrusted brown spots came off after the
soaking! The same happened on stainless-steel cookie sheets. I
could go on and on, but rest assured Stain Solver will blow you
away.

Installing Huge 18x18 Ceramic Tile

Michelle from Kearney, NE wrote to me with a very interesting
question:

My husband and I are about to install 18x18 porcelain tiles in our kitchen. Problem is: when we ripped up the original flooring, we discovered large nasty patches of paper and glue from old linoleum. We're preparing to install cement backer board as a base, but we're afraid the tiniest bit of un-levelness on the plywood subfloor will cause tiles or grout to crack.

I've been told by a co-worker that a good bed of modified thinset to adhere the backer board to the subfloor should bypass this problem. Is he right? Or will we need to spend a weekend choking on adhesive remover to get rid of the old glue?

Michele, you've got an issue no doubt. It's compounded because of
the giganzo tile you've decided to use. Ceramic tile loves to be
installed on a subfloor that's in the same plane. This doesn't mean
that the floor is level, just that there are no humps or dips in
the floor. These imperfections can cause tiny gaps under tile. If
you step on a tile with a gap under it, it creates tension in the
tile and it can crack.

Tiny tiles can be installed on a floor that's wavy because they lay
flat on the gentle undulations. But giant tile like the ones you're
going to use, well, they're problematic. You need to get that floor
as smooth as possible before installing that tile. Yes, you can
trowel on thinset and put backer board over that, but my guess is
that it will not guarantee that the floor will be in the same plane.

Open the windows and get a long straight edge to help you discover
high and low spots. Use a pourable self-leveling floor compound to
solve any issues.

It's the middle of February. Holy Smokes. The weather here in New
Hampshire has been glorious. We have had day after day of bright
blue sky glistening on the smooth ice of Lake Winnisquam. But
that's to end later today. Any moment now 6 inches of new snow is
forecast to blanket us. It's needed, as we've not had a decent snow
in a month. There are many places where there is no snow cover. It
looks like late March around here as I type this. The snowmobilers
are very unhappy.

There's lots to share this issue, so I'll get started.

Counterfeit Pocket Doors and You Know You've Arrived

I use Google Alerts. This amazing feature sends you an email when
it finds a keyword or phrase you're tracking on any newly published
page on the Internet. Can you see how advantageous that could be in
your business or hobby? A few days ago I got an alert about this

Well lookie lookie who's at the bottom of *their* home page. Little
old me. The owners of this site are promoting a FRAUD. I have
nothing to do with them and I've never used this product. They
don't have my permission to use me as an endorser. I'm angry as can
be as you might expect. I'm quite certain they are losers.

But the point is, they feel I'm a celebrity on the Internet. They
know I'm successful and have a recognizable brand. So they are
playing off my success.

Guess what? The same thing is happening to a great brand of pocket

Snap-Together Ceramic Tile

I just received some test samples of a porcelain ceramic floor tile
that snaps together similar to what one does with laminate
flooring. It's called SnapStone.

This is a floating floor system that lays on top of any other
flooring. It's an ingenious system that appears to be well
engineered. The tiles are cut very precisely, and the plastic frame
they sit in looks like it would provide the needed support one
usually gets from a bed of thinset mortar.

All the installation steps are the same as if you were using
regular tile. The *only* thing you save is the one day you need to
stay off a tile floor set in thinset. You might also save a mess if
you've not worked with thinset before.

This tile comes with a very special grout that you must use. I
suspect the grout is more like a sanded caulk than a cement-based
grout one might normally use. The grout needs to have a pretty
amazing degree of flexibility to work with a floating floor system.

I didn't price this tile out, so I can't tell you how it compares
to regular tile. But it's interesting.

One thing I can't figure out is how to snap in a tile that has a
tough L-shaped cut if you're working up against a finished surface.
My guess is that you need to work away from the L-shaped cut piece.
This could be problematic.

All in all, this may be a great system if you're a beginner and
have a room with all simple straight cuts.

I'm really energized! I have all sorts of things going on up here
in New Hampshire. The weather has been gorgeous. We've had a string
of gorgeous days up here in New Hampshire. Here are some photos
I've taken over the past few weeks.

I'm working hard on several projects at once, but the biggest news
is about my Stain Solver business. Just two weeks ago we went
through a huge growth spurt. I turned over the packaging and
fulfillment of the product to a fantastic company in Cincinnati
that can really handle huge volume. You and I are going to put them
to the test with this issue. Read below about Septic Cleaning.

In addition, we're completing testing of a new shopping cart for
AsktheBuilder.com. I've never been happy with the cart I have now,
and my team members, I believe, have discovered an amazing cart. I
hope to unveil it in the next few weeks after we finish testing it.

Hole Pro Hole Saws

Just before Christmas I get flooded with press releases and tools
to test because manufacturers are competing for your limited
spending dollars. One of the tools that came, but I was unable to
test because of time constraints, was a boxful of amazing hole saws
and a unique tool that lets you cut larger holes in drywall while
capturing all or most of the dust. These tools are made by a
company owned by women and run primarily by women I was told by
Peggy Rader. I'm pretty certain Peggy is the President.

It shouldn't surprise you that even hole saws can benefit from
intelligent design. Peggy and her team seem to have developed hole
saws that are perfectly matched for any drill, including cordless
drills. If you've ever used an older hole saw with a cordless
drill, you know the friction created by the hole saw rapidly sucks
the life from the cordless-drill batteries. These new hole saws
from Hole Pro create much less friction.

You really want to look at their Power X-230 tool. This is the one
that has the clear plastic shield that allows you to cut a perfect
hole in a drywall or plaster ceiling with none of the dust
cascading into your eyes or onto the finished things below you. I
can't tell you how I wish I would have had this tool years ago.
You'll not be disappointed with these hole saws.

Sears 24-Inch Snowblower

This may not appeal to you if you're living where Mother Nature
doesn't pummel you with frozen water. Here in New Hampshire, snow
and ice are as common from November to sometimes May as sugar sand
is found on the splendid beaches of Siesta Key in Sarasota, Florida.

I recently had the chance to test the Sears 24-inch dual-stage
snowblower. This is a dandy machine. I LOVE the new control that
allows you to easily point the chute to where you want the snow to
go. The blower starts easily, it's simple to operate and it really
gobbles up snow.

If you don't like to use the pull starters where you yank a handle
attached to a rope, no problem! This bad boy comes with an electric
starter just like your car. You attach an extension cord and just
push a button until the motor starts. Sweet!!!!

You're going to love this snowblower. I can assure you of that.

Septic Tanks and Cleaning Tip

Tens of millions of people here in the USA and all across the world
use septic tanks to dispose of waste from their homes. City sewers
simply can't be run to every house in the land.

Think about how fast something decomposes when it's exposed to the
air. Many microorganisms are able to break it down. But in a septic
tank, these small creatures can suffocate as the breakdown of the
waste creates different gases like methane, that drive out the
oxygen from the water in the tank. These helpful microorganisms are
delivered into the tank regularly when you flush your toilet, but
they don't last long.

All that's left in the tank are anaerobic (absence of oxygen)
bacteria to do the dirty work. Imagine how thorough and fast the
breakdown would be if you introduced oxygen into your tank every
week. This is exactly what happens with certain septic systems
where there's not room for a leach field. They're called aerobic
systems. An electric pump injects air into your septic tank while
an impeller spins whipping the water and waste in the tank like a
blender on your kitchen counter. That's great if your tank is set
up this way, but millions are not.

My Stain Solver can add the oxygen to your tank if you don't have
an aerobic system! Each week add one-half cup by pouring it into
your toilet bowl and then flushing it down to the tank. Flush twice
in a row to make sure all the powder makes it into the tank as
rapidly as possible. The tank then gets a huge shot of beneficial
oxygen on a regular basis. Pretty cool!

P.S. My 16-pound size is perhaps the best bargain for this use.

If your house has a septic tank, regular septic cleaning needs to be part of your schedule. Putting wrong materials into your septic system will create septic tank problems. Get a septic system inspection to be sure your septic system is being properly maintained.
