John 18-Part 5

LET IT GLOW

Trial #1-Jesus was before Annas the former high priest.

Trial #2-Jesus went before Caiaphas, the present high priest. He asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. (verse 19)

What happened next?

Peter wasn't trying to fit in around the fire in the courtyard, but he didn't want to stand out either. He ended up denying Jesus three times. (verses 15-18)
Caiaphas was interested in the number of disciples Jesus had. Jesus had taught openly, not secretively.
Jesus asked him to produce witnesses for Him. Failure to produce them would have made this trial illegal.
One of the officers struck Jesus on the palm of His hand, accusing Him of disrespect or evil.

Did you notice that Jesus stood His ground of innocence? Do our actions look like we don't know Jesus?

Trial #3-Jesus went before the Sanhedrin, into the Hall of judgment and the governor's place of residence. The Jews didn't enter a gentile's quarters. They were more interested in ceremonial purity than justice. Pilate asked what Jesus was accused of doing. (verse 29) They would not have brough a person to Pilate if they had not been an evildoer.

How did Pilate react to this scheme of the Jews? He told the Jews to take Jesus and judge Him according to their law. Pilate didn't know they wanted to kill Jesus. The Jews couldn't legally execute anyone. They wanted Pilate to pass the death sentence upon Jesus.(vere 31)

Do you see how this procedure was illegal?

When trials come, are we strong in our faith in Jesus?

John 18-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

Can you picture this: The soldiers pulled Jesus' arms behind His neck and placed them in irons or binding them tightly with a rope. During His ordeal, we assume He remained bound with a noose around His neck.

Then Jesus was taken to the highest Jewish power in Israel, Annas, for the first of 6 trials:

1, They took Jesus to Annas (the father in law to Caiaphas). He was previously a high priest and had a great influence over the Sanhedrin. It was like a preliminary examination. Annas would then give his advice to Caiaphas about Christ's destiny. It was up a hill to the residence of Annas and around 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning. According to Jewish law, the office of a high priest was held for life. Many still considered Annas their high priest. Yet, Caiaphas made the final decisions. The office of high priesthood was generally handed down through the family, so it was not uncommon for them to collaborate in carrying out the functions of the office.

Those religious leaders were evil and more concerned with their political ambitions than leading people to God. They should have known Jesus to be the Messiah according to Scriptures.

This gave time for the Sanhedrin members to hurry and gather together for a trial so early in the morning. This was illegal in the Jewish laws, though. Trials were not to occur on the eve of a Sabbath or during festivals, either. All trials were to be public and held in the Hall of Judgment in the temple area.

The disciples scattered immediately after the arrest in the garden. (Matt. 26:56) Peter and John returned to follow the Lord's movements from a safe distance. John was permitted inside to watch. John's family wealth and social status may have had an influence on Annas.

Peter entered the great hall of Annas' residence, the doorkeeper recognized him as a disciple. Then the first denial of Peter knowing Jesus around the fire, one of three, occurred as Jesus predicted. (13:38)

We know how this ends for Jesus-death on the cross. Keep in mind, He did this because Jesus loves you and me. He took our punishment for our sins. Do you trust Him to be your Savior?

No matter what comes our way, Jesus has already won it. Trust Him, He's got this.

Jesus knows what it is like to be on trial for doing good.

We turn to You, Precious Jesus, for strength and comfort.; fix our eyes on You.

Help us face tomorrow, for it is in Your hands.

LET IT GLOW

What did spontaneous Peter do?

He drew his sword, then he chopped off the right ear of the servant to the high priest, whose name was Malchus. Wow Peter! Are you in trouble! There were 600 soldiers that morning in the Garden and you do this?

Jesus came to Peter's rescue-Put up your sword. The cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink from it? (verse 11)

Did Peter intend to kill the man by splitting his head open? Malchus dodged the sword at the last moment, only loosing an ear.

Jesus' cup was one of suffering and agony on the cross. He took our place for punishment of our sins. What love!

LET IT GROW

Allow God's plan to unfold. It's tempting to take matters into our own hands, to force the issue. Most often such moves lead to sin. We must trust God to work out His plan.

Had Peter had his way, Jesus would not have gone to the cross, and God's plan of redemption would have been thwarted. However, Jesus touched the man's ear and healed him. (Luke 22:51) Then Jesus rebuked Peter for acting like an unbeliever and failing to see God's plan unfolding.

Do we often jump ahead and try to solve a problem before we allow God to work it out?

LET IT GO

Forgive when it is easy and forgive when it hurts.

Love unconditionally.

Surrender to God's plan.

John 18-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

We left Jesus and His 11 disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane. The disciples had fallen asleep and Jesus went to the gate when a crowd showed up. What happened next?

A group of 600 soldiers, high priests, Judas, and Pharisees who came to the garden. (verse4)
Jesus asked, "Whom seek ye?"
Their answer was, "Jesus of Nazareth."

This is the name that appeared on the official arrest warrant issued by the Sanhedrin and the Roman government. (Falwell)

How did Jesus answer? "I am He." (verse 5) He calmly answered and did not try to escape. Jesus stated His deity, as in 8:58. Perhaps the 600 soldiers too their position in defense, preparing for resistance and a fight. They were frightened by a single rabbi and His 11 followers? Only 1 had a weapon-Peter.

What happened as soon as Jesus said His identity? They went backward and fell to the ground. The enemies of God shrank before the presence of the Almighty.

Who do we seek? Who do we consider the One that can change hearts and lives? Jesus.

On numerous occasions, Jesus demonstrated the moral power that was His as the Son of God. Here, those men were struck by the power of Jesus' words. (David Jeremiah)

Jesus is no mere man. He's the God-man. He's the Word who was with God, was God, and became flesh. (1:1, 14) Jesus spoke the divine name using the same voice that had spoken the world into existence. And it knocked the betrayer and his accomplices off their feet. (Tony Evans)

Again, Jesus asked who they sought, Jesus of Nazareth was their answer again, and He answered, " I am He." This time, though, Jesus added, Let these go their way. (verse 8)

John said it was so it might be fulfilled that Jesus said, Of them which thou gavest Me have I lost none. (6:39; 17:12)

When Jesus intervenes to protect you, His intervention is always effective. (Evans)

LET IT GO

Nothing matters when we stand before a Holy, Almighty God. None of us are righteous, no not one.

Will we stand in His presence or to our knees will we fall?

Will we fall on our face and tremble?

It is better to bow before Almighty God now and confess our sins then ask His forgiveness than to stand before the Righteous Judge.

Which will it be, my friend?

Betrayed

LET IT GLOW

Have you ever been betrayed? It is such a deep pain that it paralyzes you emotionally. Jesus knew that pain, for one of His disciples betrayed Him.

They came to take Him away. Jesus took His 11 disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane. They went there frequently for a place of seclusion where Jesus prayed. Judas led the band of 600 soldiers, chief priests, and Pharisees to where Jesus was.

They came with torches to take the Light of the world (Jesus) with weapons to arrest the Prince of Peace. Since Jesus knows all things, He expected this, for Jesus went to the location where He knew Judas could find Him.

One of His own disciples betrayed Him early that morning-Judas.

Are we prepared for people to betray us? I doubt it. Usually it is so unexpected that someone we trust and maybe love would do such a thing. It is unimaginable that they would hurt us so deeply that we are shocked. And sometimes they even lie about it.

LET IT GROW

Jesus was completely aware of Judas' plan. Judas sold out information as to where Jesus was for 30 pieces of silver. Maybe he knew what the group's intentions were or maybe not. At any rate, Judas lived to regret it, they killed himself. The group was intending to kill the Messiah Jesus Christ.

Did you notice that Jesus didn't run and hide when the group came looking for Him? Jesus went to the gate to meet the crowd. It was at this point that Judas kissed the Master in order to indicate His identity. (Matt. 26:49)

We can meet evil head on with Jesus beside us. Be of good cheer, Jesus has overcome the world. (16:33)

LET IT GO

Keep the faith.

Love our enemies.

Turn the other cheek.

Trust God.

LET IT GLOW

Going through a tough time? You can have peace. Read on to find out how.

As the time for Jesus' cross quickly approached, He stated that the disciples would scatter then. Peter and John would watch from the background. Others would run for their lives. Basically, everyone would be afraid for their own life and leave Jesus alone. (Yet, He was not alone since the Father was with Him.) (verse 32)

Jesus was sent from the Father, is in the Father, and would return to the Father. The Son and the Father are one. (Tony Evans)

It was all in God's plan in order to provide salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

Isn't it easy to have strong faith whenever we aren't challenged? It's easy to declare our faith in God while among Christians in church. It's harder to live it out in the world, surrounded by unbelievers.

LET IT GROW

Jesus wasn't telling His guys to fill them with fear, but so they might have peace in Him. (verse 33) We can't know if we truly have peace until conflict strikes. A Christian's peace is found in our connection to Jesus Christ based on His work. (Evans)

How can we courageous and faithful, with peace during tribulation?

Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (verse 33c)

The world may beat us down, but we can live with bold faith because Jesus is the sovereign King over the world. He has defeated sin, Satan, and death. Amen!

Jesus can overrule our earthly circumstances. So we must abide in Him and His Word and Spirit abide in us. Surrender to God's will keeps us in His will.

Jesus accepted the disciples' statement of faith, even though He knew what lay ahead for them. We know their words and lives soon matched as they grew in faith, even to the point of death. Jesus takes us through the same process.

How well are we living out what we say and believe about Jesus?

Help us deny our self, take up our cross, and follow You, King Jesus.

Show us we are not alone in our struggles, Lord.

Bless us with Your peace today.

To You be the glory forever.

Jesus Prayed For Us

John 17

LET IT GLOW

How long do we pray?

This entire chapter John wrote is what Jesus prayed. He prayed for all who would follow Him, you and me, as well as the disciples.

For what did Jesus pray?

God be glorified and Jesus be glorified (verse 1)
Eternal life for believers (verse 2)
Believers know the Only True God and Jesus (verse 3)
God keeps (guards, watch over) believers in a wicked world (verse 11)
Unity (verse 11)
None compromise with the wicked world (verse 12)
Jesus' joy be fulfilled in them and us (verse 13)
God's Word given them (verse 14)
Protection from the evil one (verse 15)
They are not of the world (verse 16)
Sanctification (holiness) (verse 17).

Jesus asked for unity in harmony and love as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are united. He desired the disciples and us to be protected by keeping us connected to our holy and righteous Father. Also, Jesus prayed we would be protected from Satan and the worldly ways.

LET IT GROW

In verse 17, Jesus prayed we would be sanctified, set apart, through God's Truth, His Word. Jesus prayed for the church and future believers in Him. He wants us to be complete.

In verse 24, Jesus desires those given to Him will be with Him and see His glory,

Dear one, do you believe in Jesus as God's Son, the Way to heaven, the Truth, the way of life?

LET IT GLOW

Christ told His disciples He was going away in a little while, but then they would see Him. I'm sure that was confusing to them. They would wee while the world would rejoice. However, their sorrow would turn into joy because of the resurrection of Jesus. (verse 20)

Jesus reassured the guys He would see them again. The Holy Spirit would produce a permanent joy. (verse 22)

Jesus used the example of the pain in childbirth and joy the child brings to the mother. The pain in insignificant to her by that time.

LET IT GROW

When that day came, it would be impossible for the disciples to personally ask Christ for things.

Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. (verse 23)

Jesus intercedes for Christians in prayer to the Father through the name of the Son, Jesus Christ. When the Spirit came, Christ would reveal the Father plainly.

The Father answers our prayers because He loves us, because we love Jesus and believe in Him as Savior. (verse 27)

Don't know who said this, but what a profound statement in made in verse 30:

... this we believe that Thou camest forth from God. (verse 30)

Friend, do you believe in Jesus as God's Son?

Whatever my lot, You are still my God.

It is well with my soul.

I trust in God my Savior.

Holy Spirit

Who is the Holy Spirit?

What does Jesus till us about the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit

He guides in all truth. (verse 13)
He does not speak of Himself.*He speaks of what He hears.
He reveals things to come. future revelation.
He glorifies Jesus.
His revelation is from Jesus. (verse 14)

Jesus' personal sacrifice shows us His priority was to love us. Opposition is hard to deal with.

The Holy Spirit guided the guys as they wrote the Scriptures. We are able to understand it through the Holy Spirit's working.

LET IT GROW

The disciples didn't get what Jesus was speaking about-His leaving and returning. We should not get upset if we don't understand what Jesus is doing in our life. After all, His first disciples were confused and Jesus was right there with them. Keep pursuing Him.

We know Jesus was speaking about His death to His disciples. Then He would rise from the dead and appear to them in His resurrection body. Joy would return to them.

LET IT GLOW

Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure. The trial of their faith was coming, so Jesus wanted them to be prepared. Yet, the did not understand at the time.

Being a disciple of Jesus means:

hatred so strong that they put you out of the synagogue;
when they kill you, they think they're serving God;
they reject God and Jesus.

How hard it is when family or friends reject your faith, love, and witness.

Sorrow filled the disciples' hearts because Jesus was soon leaving them. Yet, Sunday was coming-the resurrection of Christ.

LET IT GROW

It was necessary for Jesus to leave. Had Jesus not gone away, the Comforter would not have come. (verse 7) The Holy Spirit is our intercessor and consoler.

The work of the Holy Spirit is to convict sin. We are not righteous, no not one, so we get convicted of it.

Been under conviction lately? Does it bring repentance?

We let go of pride and humble ourself before You, HOly God.

Need Comfort?

LET IT GLOW

Needs some hope today? some comfort? The Holy Spirit gives strength to endure the unreasonable hatred and evil in our world and the hostility many have toward Christ. This is especially comforting for those facing persecution.

Jesus gives two names for the Holy Spirit-Comforter and Spirit of Truth.

Comforter refers to intercessor; advocate; consoler.

He helps, encourages, strengthens, intercedes for us to the Father.

The Spirit of Truth points to the teaching, illuminating, and reminding work of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit ministers to both the head and the heart.

Be careful that suffering does not bring doubt. Are we relying upon the Holy Spirit today?

We need to rely upon the Holy Spirit to supply wisdom, abilities, and courage. He provides for believers to faithfully bear witness of Jesus Christ. We need to stand firm and proclaim the divine truth. The only way to heaven is through faith in Jesus as Savior.

Are we standing firm on our faith in Jesus?

Don't run away; don't back off.

Love and Hate

John 15-Part 7

LET IT GLOW

Who are we to love? Jesus said it twice in this chapter. We are to love one another. (verses 12, 17) This is a command, not an option. The world hates us because Jesus chose us out of the world.

Then Jesus turns to the subject of hate. It is so hared when someone shows hate toward us, isn't it? We want everyone to love us, but they won't because we represent Jesus and His love.

Hate means to detest; love less.

Hate occurs 8 times in the rest of this book.

What does Jesus teach about hate?

The world hates us because Jesus choses us to be in the family of God. (verse 19)
He that hates Jesus hates God, too. (verse 23)
Jesus performed works that should have caused those in the world to believe in Him, but they did not. (verse 24)
The world hates Jesus and God.
They hated Jesus without a cause.

When we stand up for God's commands and Word, we should expect a reaction of hate, not love shown to us by those in the world. That doesn't make it any easier, though, does it. Love your enemy and do good to them, pray for them.

LET IT GROW

Jesus didn't hurt people, He helped them. He told them the truth. When it gets tough, remember the Comforter is only a prayer away. We are not alone. Jesus will send the Spirit of Truth to bear witness of Jesus. (verse 26)

The Holy Spirit helps us witness and proclaim the gospel. He gives us direction, convicts us of sin, gives us strength.

LET IT GLOW

To be a friend of Christ means to obey Him. (verse 14) He calls us His friends. (verse 15) Because of the disciples' obedience.

What is Jesus telling His disciples and us here?

*Christ chooses who will be saved and serves Him. We did not choose Him. (verse 16a)

*Chosen means to select; make choice.

*Jesus chose us and His disciples so we produce spiritual fruit in kingdom work. We reflect God's character.

*We are appointed to a mission on earth that is soul winning and helping them row in faith.

*When we remain in fruit production, whatever we ask in Jesus' name God will give.

Christ could now call the disciples His friends. As His friends, they were told all the things that Christ had heard from the Father. Although they were Christ's friends, this was by His choice, not their choice. (verse 16) (Liberty Bible Commentary)

LET IT GROW

What is our mission?

We keep the command of Jesus, love Him, and love one another. (verse 9-15)

Jesus wants believers to bear fruit, live out the gospel, share the gospel, and win many to Him. He wants that fruit to remain in us. (David Jeremiah)

Are we a friend of God? Seek Him with all your heart and you will be.

LET IT GO

... of whatever keeps us from remaining in Jesus and producing fruit.

... so love, joy, peace, faith, goodness, kindness, patience dwell in us.

Who Are We To Love?

LET IT GLOW

It's easy to love those who love us, treat us well, and give to us. What about those who say hurtful things to and about us, degrade us, withhold from us the good we deserve, even physically and emotionally abuse us? Are we still showing them love in spite of their actions toward us?

What is Jesus telling us about love?

*Love one another as I have loved you. (verses 12)

*Love your enemies., bless and pray for them. (Matthew 5:44)

*Lay down your life for your friends. (verse 13)

*Love God with all our heart, soul, mind, strength.

Love is the decision to compassionately, righteously, responsibly, and sacrificially seek the well-being of another. Love is not depending on our feelings, so we can love people whom we may not necessarily like. Love isn't driven by our feelings. Love is driven by sacrifice for the welfare of others. Laying down our life for our friends is the greatest expression of love. (verse 13) (The Tony Evans Bible Commentary)

LET IT GROW

Do we want to be a friend of Jesus'? Then we must do whatsoever He commands us to do. (verse 14)

Only two people in the Old Testament were described as "friends of God." It was Abraham and Moses. David loved God.

Jesus' disciples were His friends. He shared what was on His heart. He disclosed to them what the Father shared with Him.

Are we seeking after God with all our heart?

Help us let go of our self and love You, God, and love others.

Is Your Joy Empty?

LET IT GLOW

Are you still waiting for a prayer to be answered? Look back at verse 7. We can have the assurance that God answers every true petition. We need to trust in His promise here and in the complementary intercession of the Holy Spirit. (Rom. 8:27) Remain in Jesus and in His Word. (verse 7)

Remember that with God noting is impossible. No problem is too difficult, no burden too heavy for Him. Be sure to not put our will above His. We must not insist on our way. Don't expect an immediate answer to come in exactly tTonyhe way, the place, and the manner we are seeking. Learn to pray as Jesus Himself prayed. (Billy Graham)

Prayers get answered when we maintain intimate fellowship with God through His Word. That is because our will aligns with God's will. (Tony Evans)

Is your joy container empty? Jesus offers His joy to us.

What was the joy of Jesus? It was His absolute self-surrender and self-sacrifice of Himself to His Father, the joy of doing that which the Father sent Him to do. Jesus delighted in doing God's will. (Oswald Chambers)

Friend, God is in control. Be assured and confident in His sovereignty.

Is it our joy to do our Father's will in our life?

Have we surrendered our will to His?

Are we making self-sacrifices in order to accomplish God's will?

Is Jesus' joy in us right now?

This is My commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. (verse 12)

LET IT GLOW

What are the two commandments which Jesus gave that appear in this chapter?

1. Abide in Jesus

2. Love one another as Jesus lives us.

How do we remain in Christ and He in us?

We confess our sins and ask Jesus to forgive us.
We study HisWord and obey it in our life.
.We depend on Christ and submit to the power of the Holy Spirit allowing Him to flow through us.

Is there someone we are not loving?

Are we denying ourself, dying to self, following Jesus?

Challenging, isn’t it?

What is the greatest love?

In verse 13, Jesus tells us it is to lay down our life for our friends,

Love is sacrificially for others.It’s not an emotional feeling, but an act of giving.

Is there someone we should be giving to sacrificially that we are not right now?

When we do, then our joy will be complete. Then we will bear much fruit for Jesus.

Before we can love, give, and obey, what do we need to let go?

Is there resentment, hurt, uncontested sin in our life?

John 15-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

Are you bearing fruit today? How do we bear spiritual fruit?

We are purged, cleansed, pruned. The Word of God cleanses us. (verses 2-3)
We abide (be present, remain, stand, tarry) in Jesus. (verse 4)
When Jesus is in us and we in Him, and Hus Words are in us, we produce much spiritual fruit
Then when we ask, it will be done. (verse 7)
We glorify God when we bear much fruit and we are His disciples.

Are we confesses up? What a blessed promise Jesus gave us in verse 7. He will do what we ask when we remain in Jesus and His Words remain in us. When those conditions are met, we are praying according to God’s will.

LET IT GROW

We remain in Christ’s love because we obey His commandments. ( If you missed the 38 commands previously posted, look at earlier ones.)

When we obey them, we abide in God’s love and Jesus’ love.

Jesus told us these things so His joy is in us and our joy might be full. (verse 11)

Full means complete, mature, filled.

John 15

I am the true vine and My Father is the husbandman. (verse 1)

LET IT GLOW

Once we lived at a house which had grapes along the back fence. Vines were all over it, for they had not been trimmed. Yet, they produced luscious, big grapes.

Have you noticed that Jesus often used agricultural imagery in His teachings? Previously, Prophet Isaiah spoke of Israel as the Lord's vineyard. God expected His vineyard to bear fruit. God expected His vineyard to bear fruit, but worthless grapes was all it produced. (Tony Evans)

Israel was meant to bear fruit of justice and righteousness. Yet they did not do so.

Jesus identifies two types of branches: fruit-bearing and barren. Appearances are deceiving. The ones not bearing fruit may look like the other branches for a while, but their failure to yield any harvest shows that they are not.

We can't bear fruit independent of the vine. A Christian must be connected to Jesus. Believers enjoy a relationship with God. Through us, God produces the fruit of the Spirit, but we must be yielded to Him. His Words abide in us and our branches abide in Him. Prayer is the outgrowth. Love and joy results in our life.

LET IT GROW

In verse 2, we read what the guy who takes care of the vineyard does to produce more grapes. He purgeth it so it will make more grapes.

Purgeth means to cleanse; to prune.

God the Father cleanses Christians who are bearing fruit to bring them to bear more fruit. We find the results in Galatians 5:22-23. Cleansing is produced through the Word of God. (verse 3)

Prune us, Lord, produce love, joy, peace, patience, forgiveness, kindness, goodness in us today.

John 14-Part 12

LET IT GLOW

Why was Jesus telling His disciples all of this before His departure? It was so they believed in Him as their Savior/Messiah. (verse 29) Jesus wanted to leave them His peace. (verse 27) Jesus promised peace in the midst of a storm, tribulation. That is when we shouldn't have any peace. His is the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4;7)

Jesus knew when He died on the cross, the guys would be afraid and troubled in their hearts. Jesus did not resist those who came to kill Him. Jesus would come to them through the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was willing and ready to die in obedience to the Father's commandment. He was the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. Have you asked Jesus to be your Savior?

Jesus' mission was almost complete. He wanted the disciples to be filled with joy since Jesus was going to heaven to be with the Father. Believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. (verse 29)

LET IT GROW

What troubles did Jesus address in this chapter? Death, problems, disobedience are what Jesus dealt with here.

Are we allowing Truth to guide our decisions? Are we meditating on Truth? Do we choose to love Christ and serve His church?

Allow the Spirit to give us courage. He has been faithful. Victory is in Jesus.

Through it all, to whom do we turn?

LET IT GO

May we devote ourself to obeying God's Word and Spirit.

Depend upon the power and presence of Almighty God.

Give Him glory.

Sing His praises trough it all. Trust in Him.

John 14-Part 11

LET IT GLOW

Those willing to come to Jesus in love and obedience will find the Father and Son coming to make their home or abode with them. (verse 23)

Abode means a staying; residence (the act or the place).

Through the Spirit, both the Father and the Son will make their home in the believer. (Falwell)

It's the one who doesn't love Jesus or His Words who will lose out on a relationship with Him. (verse 24) Disobedience to the Word of Christ is also rejection of the Father's Word.

LET IT GROW

The Holy Ghost will teach us all things and remind us what Christ said. That is why we need to be in God's Word.

In the time when the disciples are in sorrow as Jesus died, He would give them peace. (verse 27)

Don't be troubled nor afraid-believe. The peace of Jesus calms troubled hearts and fearful hearts.

Need Some Hope?

LET IT GLOW

Need some hope? Jesus is speaking to His disciples and to us believers:

the Holy Spirit comforting us and abiding with us forever (verse 16),
the Spirit of Truth dwells in us (verse 17),
Jesus does not leave us comfortless (verse 18),
because Jesus lives, we shall live also (verse 19)
our relationship is Jesus in us, we in Him, Jesus in Father God (verse 20).

We don't have to know the future in order to have faith in God. Faith in God makes us secure about the future.

LET IT GROW

What is evidence that we love Jesus and the Father? It is through obedience. We surrender to Jesus, obey His Word and Spirit, then the Spirit pours into our heart.

Love for Christ is demonstrated by keeping His commandments. Obedience flowing from love is very different from obedience performed out of obligation. Jesus promises His presence as people join Him in His work. (David Jeremiah)

Are we growing more in love with Jesus each day?

Are we striving to please Him?

I Jesus illuminating our minds and hearts so we learn more of the Word?

The truth is I am my Father's child. He loves me and you.

Take Comfort

John 14-Part 9

LET IT GLOW

Are you weary and need of comfort? Is there no one to give you comfort? Turn to Jesus, my friend.

Jesus promised the Father would give believers a comforter and He will give us the Comforter, too.

Comforter means intercessor; consoler; advocate.

Another refers to another of the same kind.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, who has the same quality and character as Christ. The Comforter would be God. Christ left the disciples, yet the Helper/Comforter would remain for ever.

In other words, Jesus promised to not leave His disciples as orphans. So it applies to us followers of Jesus. Jesus never leaves us nor forsakes us. Let Him care for you and guide you.

LET IT GROW

The second thing Jesus said He gives is the Spirit of Truth.

God operates according to divine, holy standards. He is the Spirit of Truth because He only deals with truth. When you trust in Christ to take away your sins and give you eternal life, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you, ministering the presence of God to you. (Tony Evans)

Is our relationship with Jesus one of love? Then we should be doing what He says without hesitation. If we hesitate, then we love someone else in competition with Him. (Chambers)

Jesus, You are the Spirit of Truth and our Comforter.

Love for Christ in inseparable from obedience. (MacArthur)

Our Lord isn't insistent on our obedience, for He doesn't make us do it. He wants us to love Him so much that our heart desires to please Him. So, if we want to be Jesus' disciple, we have to deny ourself, die to self, and follow Jesus' teachings and leading. (Matt. 16:24)

Are we here to serve ourself or Christ? Are we giving up our right to governor our own life and surrendering it to Jesus for Him to reign? Who sits on the throne of our heart-self or Jesus?

When my relationship to Christ is that of love, I will do what He says without any hesitation. If I hesitate, then something or someone is in competition with Jesus on the throne of my heart. (Oswald Chambers)

We show God that we love Him when we love others.

Thousands will be blessed whenever we obey God, His Word, and His Spirit.

If ye love Me, keep My commandments. (John 14:15)

LET IT GLOW

Love is not sentimental emotionalism; it is obedience to the commandments of God. (Falwell)

Jesus summed up how we as Christian believers are live our life.

What are the commandments of God? I found 38 listed commands Jesus gave for all His followers. (It is found in the website: jesusfilm.org.) They are taken from the Gospel of Matthew:

Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near. (Matt. 4:17)
Come and follow Me (4:19)
Rejoice when you're persecuted in My name (5:11-12)
Let your light shine before all people (5:16)
Be reconciled to one another (5:23-24)
Take sin very seriously (5:29-30)
Keep your word (5:39)
Turn the other cheek (5:40-42)
Go above and beyond (5:40-42)
Love your enemies (5:48)
Be perfect as you heavenly Father is perfect. (5:48)
Focus on spiritual disciples for the right reasons (6:1-18)
Put your efforts in the right place (6:19-21)

LET IT GROW

Shall we take a look at e action verbs found in the first 16 instructions:

Repent, follow, rejoice, shine. reconcile keep, turn, go, love, be perfect, focus, effort.

It would be good to take some time and let the Holy spirit speak to us concerning those teachings of our Savior. Which ones do you need to work on right now? We will continue with the rest for the next two days.
