These last several months have gotten away from me! I've been barely getting everything done around my house, let alone doing anything here! Sorry for the unexpected break. I'm hoping to ease back into blogging and get my life in order once more with the coming year.

Strengthen Your Budget - Food

Food can be the biggest budget buster around. However, it can also be a great place to save money if you plan carefully. Through meal planning, cooking from scratch, gardening and couponing you are able to see significant savings.

Meal Plans

Meal Planning dramatically decreases the impulse to run through the drive-thru for supper. Meat will be out and ready for supper and you know what you're making. Supper made at home will taste much better than anything you can get at a drive-thru!

Find what works best for you. Does it work best to do it once a week, once a month, or somewhere in between?

Cook from Scratch

Convenience costs. The more you cook from scratch, the lower your grocery bill. If you don't cook much yet and eat out most of the time, start small. Start by buying convenience items at the grocery store. They will cost less than eating out. Then slowly start experimenting with cooking. Try making a new meal or at least one new dish from scratch each week. Once you have a few good recipes under your belt, add another meal from scratch, until the majority of your meals are homemade.

Freezer Cooking

Having meals in the freezer when life gets busy helps curb the appeal of the drive-thru. Freezer cooking helps you make meals from scratch, but still have convenience right at your finger tips! Freezer cooking takes out a lot of prep work when you are making your meals each evening. There are lots of great books and blogs about this very topic. One of my favs is Life As Mom. Check it out! She is even hosting a freezer cooking link up!

Gardening

Next year consider setting aside a small area in your yard for a garden, or just do container gardening. There is joy in seeing your seeds sprout and become plants that produce food. Not to mention the savings your own produce brings!

Couponing

This takes some learning and practice, but couponing is an excellent way to save money. It's the main reason I started this blog. I was so amazed at how much could be saved with coupons. Although the focus of my blog has changed, I still coupon quite a bit. I save tons of money on toiletries, food, and on various other items. I am hooked! I love sites like We Use Coupons , Money Saving Mom, My Price Savings, & Bargains to Bounty. They make couponing much easier.

Eating Out

This can be an astronomical expense. Ordering water to drink, helps to keep the bill down. As does sharing a meal. I also do MyPoints or Reward Port, where you read emails and get points just for clicking on emails. After so many points I am able to get gift cards for various places.

Easy Fridge Tip

This is a repost from the archives with a few alterations. My hubby's dear grandmother passed away this week after having a stroke last week. So my attentions lie elsewhere this week. Thank you for understanding.

My dear friend Etta gave me this tip years ago. It makes cleaning the fridge super easy.

Take paper towels and lay them on the bottom of your fridge shelf. You want all the flat surfaces to be covered. This helps when something spills. Now instead of having a big mess to clean, you only have to throw away the paper towels and wipe the shelf a bit.

I rarely use paper towels anymore, normally opting for rags or towels. One of these days I hope to splurge and buy hand towels to use instead of the paper towels.

With this method I will clean the fridge more often since I know it won't be a big job.

Life without fear. The world in which we live today makes this seem impossible. Turn on the news only to hear the details of the latest bombing, or have so-called experts arguing over whether this recession is over or going to be worse than ever. How do we combat this fear and not allow it to take over our lives?

Max Lucado explores this topic in his book Fearless. He talks about how we expect that our life as a Christian should be perfect, that God will not allow us to go through trials because we are now His children. However as Max points out, in John 16:33 Jesus tells us, "In this world you will have trouble." Not you may have trouble, but you will have trouble. We need to expect trouble and realize that through it God is teaching us and reaching not only us, but the world around us.

However, while we should expect to have trouble, that does not mean we should worry about our future. It does mean that we should learn to trust God for our every need. It is hard to let go of that fear since in these uncertain times dread seems to be everywhere we turn. This book addresses many areas of fear from The Villagers of Stiltsville, Fear of Not Meaning all the way through The One Healthy Terror, Fear of God Getting Out of My Box. Through his gift of story telling Max Lucado explores in each of his chapters why we should set aside our fears and worries, leaning instead on our immovable God.

I have recently been going through my own struggles and this book helped me tremendously. If you are struggling with fear in any area of your life I would encourage you to pick up this book, either from your library or you can purchase it online.

Strengthen Your Budget - Utilities

Utilities are an expense you will never be rid of. They are the monthly expenses that you must maintain to keep the heat, lights, and phone on. While getting out of debt, it's best to cut down to the very basics. After you are out of debt, just make sure you have a realistic budget set up.

Telephone and Internet

Call your phone company periodically to see if there are packages that better suit your needs and save you money. We are able to get a much better deal when we bundle the phone and internet together. If you pay for TV service there are often packages along with telephone and internet that will save you money by buying them together rather than separately.

Extras for your phone service are just that, extra, and you have to pay for them. For the short term, while getting out of debt, do you really need caller id or call waiting? For some people it's an added security that makes them feel safer, but if that's not you, let it go.

Cell Phones

Cell Phones can be a necessity for some jobs. Just remember, as stated above, anything extra you will be paying for, so cut costs to a minimum if getting out of debt. If you don't use it that often, check out a prepaid phone.

We have a prepaid phone by T-Mobile. The reception in some areas is not the greatest which can get frustrating at times, but it's much cheaper than a contract route. We have realized that while my husband must have one available for work, it doesn't need to be the latest or greatest, although it does hurt the pride a little!

Cable

If you have cable, cut it back to the very basic package for getting out of debt. You're probably too busy to watch much TV anyway. Once you're out of debt you can bump the package back up, just make sure to put it in your budget.

Gas & Electric

For the gas and electric, it's things you know already. In the winter bump the thermostat back a few degrees than normal and put on a sweater. In the summer, turn the AC up a few degrees. Make energy saving choices when you can, such as hanging your clothes out. Every little bit helps!

In the winter, since we live in the north, our gas bill goes up. Planning goes a long way to make that season of bills easier. Early spring, I make a report in Microsoft Money for the last year of gas & electric bills, then I divide that by twelve to find how much I should budget for each month. Then during the spring, summer, and fall any money left from the gas & electric budget gets put into savings. We have a line on my Breakdown of Savings sheet from The Total Money Makeover to keep track of how much we have available for this expense.

Strengthen Your Budget - The Basics of Your Budget

Let's start our Budget with the easy things first! My favorite Budgeting forms can be found in the back of The Total Money Makeover.

Income

Even with an irregular income, you often know the minimum you will bring in. That is your starting point for the budget. You spend that amount on your Budget form, later you will make a list for any other income, but for now you will only be putting your minimum income at the top of this paper.

Tithe

The tithe is usually the very first expense line on your budget. It is placed there because God asks us to give off the top.   It also helps us to think of someone besides ourselves first. There are times when it would seem so easy to cut this step out. It seems that it would give the budget some wiggle room.   However, we personally have found God to be faithful and provide for our needs even when it didn't work out on paper. It's all God's anyway, and He loves us so much!

Mortgage

Your largest expense is likely your mortgage. If you are in the process of buying a house, look very realistically at the mortgage. It's best to keep the payment at 25% of your income. More than this can make you feel strapped. Falling in love with a house without counting the costs can hurt your finances. While the first little while it's not too bad to scrimp for your dream house, the fun quickly loses appeal. You come to despise the house that was so perfect.

Insurances & Taxes

It's best to pay insurances on a longer basis. There are usually discounts available if you pay them quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. The longer you can pay at one time, the better the discount. To start with, you may need to pay your monthly premium and put a little bit extra aside each month until you are able to do this. Once you are on a longer basis, all you need to do is put your monthly amount into a savings account. Transferring it automatically or online will take out the hassle factor. It's so nice to know when the amount comes due, it will be waiting in your account.

Property Taxes and License Plates are another bill you want to transfer to that savings account each month. Then these items don't become an emergency. They happen each year and you know they are coming, so do a little planning early and save yourself the panic.

Savings Account

It's nice to have a Savings account that you use to hold the money until these large payments are due. Have it only for these accounts. Then make sure you have a record of why what the money is allocated for. I use a Breakdown of Savings sheet from the back of The Total Money Makeover. That way we can tell that this money is earmarked for our car insurance and don't accidentally use it to go on a vacation!

For our budget, I have figured all the accounts that need to be transferred monthly to our savings and just do it in one lump sum. So say all our long term bills come to $3600/year, I will put $300 into the savings account per month. I then allocate it to each separate category in my Breakdown of Savings sheet.

Example:
Total Transfer $300
           Add these amounts to each category on your Breakdown on Savings Sheet:
           Car Insurance - $75
           Property Taxes - $125
           House Insurance - $75
           Car Tags - $25

It makes the transfer much simpler for me, but if you need to start with doing each transfer separately until you get the hang of it, go for it!

I Need Tips from You

I'm taking a break from the budgeting series today because I need your help. I badly sprained my ankle yesterday and I was told I need to stay off of it. My older two kids are doing a great job helping as they can, but I need some tips for how to survive at least the beginning here while it hurts too bad to walk! Hubby will be working and gone late every night this week so he won't be much help! Our Menu plan from yesterday is completely out the window! It'll be easy sandwiches and things the older kids can help with.

Blanching Vegetables

My garden is giving me lots of produce now. One of the great ways to use my produce through the winter is to blanch vegetables for the freezer. Don't be intimidated, it's quite easy!

Snap the ends of your beans and then into your desired size.
Rinse the beans thoroughly
Bring a pot of water to a boil
Add your green beans to the boiling water, they are done when they turn a bright green color (about 1 minute)
Drain your water immediately and put the beans into cold water. You will need to drain the water a couple of times and fill with cold water again. This stops the beans from cooking which is necessary or they become overcooked and mushy after they are put in the Ziploc bag.
Put in freezer bags and Enjoy this winter.

A Tandem Ride With God

I heard this poem on the radio this past week. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I used to think of God as my observer, my judge, keeping track of the things I did wrong, so as to know whether I merited heaven or hell when I die. He was out there, sort of like a president. I recognized His picture when I saw it, but I didn't really know Him.

But later on, when I met Jesus, it seemed as though life was rather like a bike, but it was a tandem bike, and I noticed that Jesus was in the back helping me pedal. I didn't know just when it was He suggested we change, but life has not been the same since I took the back-seat to Jesus, my Lord. He makes life exciting. When I had control, I thought I knew the way. It was rather boring, but predictable. It was the shortest distance between two points.

But when He took the lead, He knew delightful long cuts, up mountains, and through rocky places and at break-through speeds; it was all I could do to hang on! Even though it often looked like madness, He said, "Pedal!" I was worried and anxious and asked, "Where are you taking me?" He laughed and didn't answer and I started to learn to trust. I forgot my boring life and entered into adventure. And when I'd say, "I'm scared", He'd lean back and touch my hand.

He took me to people with gifts that I needed, gifts of healing, acceptance and joy. They gave me their gifts to take on my journey, our journey, my Lord's and mine. And we were off again. He said, "Give the gifts away; they're extra baggage, too much weight." So I did, to the people we met, and I found in giving I received, and still our burden was light.

I did not trust Him, at first, in control of my life. I thought He'd wreck it, but He knows bike secrets, knows how to make it bend to take sharp corners, jump to clear high rocks, fly to shorten scary passages. And I am learning to shut up and pedal in the strangest places, and I'm beginning to enjoy the view and the cool breeze on my face with my delightful constant companion, Jesus.

And when I'm sure I just can't do any more, He just smiles and says... "Pedal."

Strengthen Your Budget - How to Make a Budget

As I told you last week we are focusing on Budgeting for several weeks. Before I get into how to cut back in certain areas, I thought we'd better discuss the How!

Make a Budget

When most people talk of making budget, they are actually tracking where all their money went and calling it a budget. That's not a Budget, that's a Report! A Report is what tells where your money went, a Budget tells your money where to go. Don't forget, you and your spouse are the ones who tell the money where to go. As Dave Ramsey says: You are the boss of your budget until you write it down, then the budget becomes the boss of you!

New Month, New Budget

While parts of your budget will be the same month after month, such as your house payment, insurances, etc., you will want a new budget each and every month because things are different each and every month. One month you may have more birthdays or weddings than normal to attend, the next month your child may have a field trip. Realize no month is perfect and neither is any budget, you will need to adjust it each month. Sometimes you need to adjust it each pay period! Just make sure you are still having a zero based budget.

Strangely enough, while it sounds restrictive, most people find it freeing in the long run. It's freeing to know that when property taxes are due, the money is there, no worries! It's freeing to know that insurance money has been saved up and all you have to do is move it from your savings account to checking! In the short term it's hard to say no to that latest, greatest gadget, but when you know the big things are taken care of, it helps tremendously!

The Actual Budget

I was given PearBudget to try and enjoyed it at first, however, I realized with our irregular income it became too hard to make a zero based budget every month. I was spending MORE time filling out my budget each month. Using a program was supposed to make it less! I think this program would work great if you have a paycheck that's the same each pay period. So through this trial and error I'm back to my printed budget sheet and a pencil & paper, along with a calculator.

Entering Data

I am a true nerd at heart, so I also like to have reports too! I have a really old version of Microsoft Money for this. I love that I can have all our account balances in one place and that it shows our net worth. Once you are out of debt and don't have those numbers to show your progress this let's you see where you are going. It's awesome to be able to pull up reports to let you know how much you spend on irregular budget items, so you are able to budget a bit better in the future!

Great Idea for FREE Address Labels

I saw this idea on Money Saving Mom! VistaPrint has a great deal where you can get 140 labels for FREE! What if you have plenty of address labels though, you just kinda pass it up, right? However, what about labels for your kids things? If you go to the Kids section you can find some really fun designs and then just add your child's name instead of the address and VOILA! You have instant personalized labels for your child!
