International Day

When: Saturday 3 March 2012
Where: Courtney House Senior Campus (202 Main Street)
Time: 10:00 till 14:00

This is an event to bring families together but also to celebrate the wonderful diversity of cultures, languages and traditions present at the school. Jumping castles; games; fun activities and an Olympic Theme Accessory Parade are some of the features of this event.

The theme of this year’s annual international day event is the Olympic Games. Therefore, children and parents may dress in their traditional/cultural outfits but are encouraged to wear accessories which support the theme of the Olympic Games. Letters explaining the event and invitations for families to showcase their country of origin shall be made available on Monday.

An entrance fee of R25 per family is applicable. These tickets are available from the school office and we request that tickets are purchased prior to the event.

Foreign Languages Media Pack

These media packs for Afrikaans, French and Spanish are compulsory for all students in Pre-R – IGCSE as they shall be used for homework and assessment purposes too. Please submit payment for your child’s media pack as soon as possible but before the end of February. Media Pack Items are being ordered from international companies so the aim is that these items shall be used officially from the second term.

Weekly Assessments

A reminder that IGCSE and AS/A Level students writing examinations in 2012 have scheduled weekly assessments on Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure that students are preparing adequately for these assessments and monitor the results that they attain.

Accountant Request

The school accountant has requested that only the following name be used on cheques when making payments: “Courtney House Learning Centre” otherwise they cannot be accepted.

Art Project

The Art Project for the next week is a Cloudscape project using a watercolour technique inspired by the artist, John Constable. Children are required to have their watercolours available at school for this project.

Junior Camp

The Grade 4 and 5 children shall attend an adventure camp at Bushveld Adventures in Parys from Monday 23 April until Thursday 26 April. Information Packs and Indemnity Forms shall be made available during the week.

Waiting Lists

Please be advised that many classes are full and unfortunately additional requests for the placement of children in certain classes cannot be met. These children shall be placed on waiting lists until a vacancy occurs.

Valentine’s Day

To celebrate Valentines Day on Tuesday 14 February, children may wear civies to school. The only request is that a highly visible love heart is seen. Children may show some creativity and imagination in this regard, however, it is a normal school day with classes continuing as usual.

Foreign Languages Media Pack

These media packs for Afrikaans, French and Spanish are compulsory for all students in Pre-R – IGCSE as they shall be used for homework and assessment purposes too. Please submit payment for your child’s media pack as soon as possible but before the end of February. For further information please contact Teacher Linda.

Mumps

If your child displays flu-like symptoms accompanied by fever, sore throat and slightly swollen face or neck, please keep them at home and seek medical advice. A few reported cases of mumps has occurred so please be aware that this children’s illness is making its rounds.

Weekly Assessments

Oxford Mathematics and Science Dictionary

Many parents cited difficulty in obtaining the Oxford Maths and Oxford Science prescribed dictionaries for students in Grade 4 – 8. The school has ordered a second batch of these books for your convenience. Orders can be placed with Michele-Ange at the school office. The books can be purchased at R180-00 per copy.

Aftercare

Please be advised that aftercare is only available until 17:00. For safety and security purposes, any children still at the Junior Campus (Dey Street) at 17:00 are taken to the Senior Campus (Main Street). Please ensure that you collect your children on time.

Teacher Jana has returned so needlework shall resume this week.

Kandinsky Art Project

All children in Pre-R – Grade 7 are reminded to bring their art supplies, jar lids and objects to trace for the Kandinsky Art project which was started last week and shall continue into this week.

Swimming Classes

Important letters went out on Friday concerning class swimming lessons for students in Grade 4, 6 and 8. Please ensure that you have received a copy and completed the consent form. Plain navy blue swimsuits and swimming caps are required.

Please take note that no child may be permitted to swim without a signed consent and indemnity form. This applies to the Junior Swimming classes too.

The prescribed English Handbook is not in print at present and cannot be ordered as yet. Most book stores are also out of copies. As soon as they become available again, you shall be informed.

Senior students writing IGCSE and AS/A Level Cambridge International Examinations in May-June have received their official examination schedules. We encourage these students to put in as much extra effort as they can over the next few weeks as preparation for these exams. Healthy nutrition, moderate exercise and sufficient sleep is also advised.

Parent Evenings

Thank you to those parents who attended the parent question-and-answer evenings last week. Items raised were noted and shall be discussed and dealt with by management in due course.

Needlework Extra Mural

Please note that there shall be no needlework extra mural activity until further notice as Teacher Jana is ill with mumps and a secondary virus. We wish Teacher Jana (Grade 1) a speedy recovery.

Security Gates

Children and senior students may be dropped off at the Senior Campus (202 Main Str) from 07:00. There is teacher supervision at this campus. The Junior Campus (Dey Str) may only allow entry from 07:30 for safety and security purposes. Younger children who need to get from the Senior to the Junior Campus before 07:30 are walked across by a teacher on duty.

Please use the Giovanetti Street entrance for drop off and afternoon pick-up at the Senior Campus.

The Giovanetti Street entrance gate shall remain open until 08:15 every morning with Shirley, the aftercare teacher on duty at this gate. Only once this gate has been shut, after 08:15, shall it be necessary to enter from the Main Street side.

Please ensure that children arrive for school before 08:00. Any students who enter the classroom after 08:15 are marked absent on the school register.

Foreign Language Packs

Audio material for your child’s foreign language (French; Spanish; Afrikaans) must be purchased this year to supplement their theoretical language lessons. Envelopes with this information were handed out at the end of last year. Payments and order forms are due by the end of January.

Scrapbooks

New Year Welcoming

Sympathies and Condolences

We are saddened to extend condolences to Julia, Christina, Sandra and Michele-Ange who lost close relatives over the holiday season.

Sad News

It was heart-breaking to receive news of the tragic passing away of the young Danai Barbee, from our Grade 7 class of 2011. We extend sincere sympathy to the Barbee family and are mourning the loss of an insightful, well-mannered and inspiring student who shall be sorely missed.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Teacher Martha on her recent engagement. We wish her and her future husband, Steve, well as they make wedding preparations.

Prize Giving

The award ceremony for the Junior Phase (Pre-R – Grade 3) is on Wednesday 30 November at 18:00. This will take place at St John Vianney Seminary Hall, diagonally opposite the senior campus, where the children have physical education classes. Parents are permitted to park inside the premises. Please diarise this as parents and grandparents are invited to attend the prize giving. Parents are asked to bring a plate of finger snacks, savoury or sweet, to this event.

Current Students

Important information pertaining to the fee structure and school calendar for 2012 was sent out. Please consult these documents as the school requires the registration deposit for current students by 9^th December 2011 to secure their place for next year.

School Photographs

The senior students (Grade 8 to A-Level) have already received their photographs.

Junior children (Pre-R to Grade 7) shall receive their photographs as soon as they have arrived from the photographers.

Reports

Literature Outing

The AS-Level English Literature students shall view the film ‘Anonymous’, a film pertaining to Shakespeare’s life, at the Brooklyn Mall on Wednesday 23^rd November from 11:00. Teacher Demi shall accompany the students.

Wild Water Fun

The Junior Phase children (Pre-R – Grade 3) were treated to a fun water-slide activity at school on Friday 18^th November. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you to the Dey Street teachers for their assistance in this regard.

A reminder that should you be relocating or terminating your children’s tuition at Courtney House, three months’ written notice is required as per the contract signed. Heritage Day Writing Competition

History Outing

Welcome Back

Extra Murals

Due to Teachers Martha and Demi being away on tour, there shall be no Yoga and Dazzling Dancing this week.

Entrepreneur’s Day

The Grade 1 class shall have their Entrepreneur’s Day on 20^th September at the Junior Campus at 10:00am. Parents are encouraged to assist their children with the preparations. For more information, please contact Teacher Jana.

Tour Return

The Senior Tour group are expected to return on Thursday 22 September at approximately 20:00. Students may be collected from the Giovanetti Street entrance.

Progress Reports

Second Cycle Academic Progress Reports for Pre-R to Grade 6 were available for collection from the school office on 13^th and 14^th September. Parents who have not collected these reports are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

Rugby Fridays

All students may wear the official Rugby supporter shirts on Fridays during the duration of the Rugby World Cup. Any official SA Green and Gold versions are also permitted.

Placements for 2012

Parents wishing to enrol new children for January 2012 are encouraged to make enquiries at the school office and to start this process soon as many classes are filling up.

Spring Holiday

The third term draws to a close on 23September for the Spring Break. School will end at the normal time. We wish everybody a safe and wonderful holiday.

All students return to school on 10^th October. Please be aware that this holiday is to be utilised as a study break for Checkpoint, IGCSE and A-Level students who are writing Cambridge International Examinations during October/November 2011.

Senior Phase Garden Route Tour

The Tour Group departs from the Senior Campus (Giovanetti Street) on Wednesday 14 September. Please make arrangements to get students to school by 06:45 am as the bus departs at 07:15. This is a nine day tour and students return on the evening of 22 September at approximately 20:00. For further information, please contact Teacher Demi.

We wish our tour group a safe and exciting time away!

Due to the teachers being away on tour, there shall be no Yoga and Dazzling Dancing during this time.

Day Trip to Bird Garden

An educational excursion has been arranged for the students in Grade 4, 5 and 6 on Thursday 15 September during the school morning. The children will visit the Monte Casino Bird Garden in Fourways, Johannesburg. A letter and consent form shall be handed out.

Rugby Fridays

All students may wear the official Rugby supporter shirts on Fridays during the duration of the Rugby World Cup. Any official SA Green and Gold versions are also permitted.

Spring Holiday

The third term draws to a close on 23September for the Spring Break. All students return to school on 10^th October. Please be aware that this holiday is to be utilised as a study break for Checkpoint, IGCSE and A-Level students who are writing Cambridge International Examinations during October/November 2011.

Arbor Day Celebration

This was a huge success and enjoyed by all. Thank you to the parents for the extra effort displayed in terms of the “dress-up” costumes for the Junior Phase children. The event was used to draw awareness to the importance of trees in our environment but also to make the students aware of the “Save the Rhino” campaign against rhino poaching which is a serious threat to our wildlife. A special word of thanks to Teachers Estelle, Jeanne and Pam for all they did to make the day so memorable.

Spring Day Activity

On Thursday 1^st September, the children at the Junior Campus (Pre-R – Grade 3) thoroughly enjoyed painting Spring Flowers on the playground wall. This was a wonderful experience for our budding artists and parents are encouraged to pop round to the back and view the spectacular work. Thank you to the Dey Street Teachers for their superb effort in organising this.

Welcome

Welcome to the many new local and international families who have recently joined Courtney House. We wish them a joyous time with us.

Arbor Day Celebration

All children are asked to contribute R5 towards the Arbor Day Celebration which shall take place on Friday 2 September. The “Plant-a-Tree” ceremony shall take place at both the Dey street and Main street campuses. Children at the Junior Campus (Pre-R – Grade 3) are asked to dress up as plants, flowers or garden creatures. Children in Grade 4 to 7 may wear civvies.

Spring Day Activity

On Thursday 1^st September, a special activity has been planned for the children at the Junior Campus (Pre-R – Grade 3) to celebrate Spring Day. For this activity, children must bring an old T-Shirt to school. The T-Shirt must be such that should it be ruined with paint, this is not a problem!

Cycle Tests

A reminder to parents that many cycle tests shall be written over the next few weeks, so please ensure that your child is getting to bed early, having a wholesome breakfast and spending sufficient time studying and preparing adequately for these tests. Parents are urged to be aware of when and what their children are writing as far as tests are concerned.

Please note that students in Grade 7 and 8 who are not attending the tour are requested to stay at home, however, IGCSE students shall have regular classes during this period.

Senior Ball

Lunch Boxes

Please ensure that healthy, nutritious snacks are sent to school for lunch breaks. Parents are asked to refrain from sending large packets of crisps and boxes of biscuits.

Afternoon Supervision

Although, there is an aftercare facility until 17:00 every day, parents are requested to collect children as soon as possible after their school day or extra mural activity has ended. Children and students are being left at school until well after the aftercare teachers have ended for the day. This means that management are required to wait until such children are collected.

Courtney House International Science Fair

We are delighted to inform you that Teacher Sandra has returned from Gabon.

Uniform Items

Parents are requested to ensure that all uniform items are clearly marked with the child’s name so that in the event that items are left behind at school, they can easily be returned to their rightful owners.

Congratulations

Congratulations to all IGCSE and A-Level students on their exceptional results from the May-June Cambridge International Examination sitting. Well done and once again, diligence and consistent work has paid off.

Baby News

Congratulations to Adri, our uniform supplier, on the birth of her set of twins, a little boy and girl.

Hair

We request that children (Pre-R to Grade 7) with hair longer than the neck-line have their hair tied up in pony-tails, plaits and buns and that long fringes are clipped back out of their face. Flicking hair out of the eyes and working with hair in the face is not conducive to effective concentration and learning at school. Furthermore, it may cause habitual eye-sight problems. Senior Phase students (Checkpoint to A/AS-Level) are encouraged to maintain neat and presentable hairstyles too!

Senior Tour

The senior students who have signed up for the tour to the Eastern Cape, Knysna and Garden Route shall receive a confirmation of tour itinerary and reservations during the week. Teachers Cara, Martha and Demi shall be accompanying the tour group from 14 till 22 September.

Please note that students in Grade 7 and 8 who are not attending the tour are requested to stay at home, however, IGCSE students shall have regular classes during this period.

Book Sale

The Travelling Bookshop shall be available at the Senior Campus (202 Main Street) on Wednesday 3 August from 12:00 till 16:00 with a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books on sale. These books are suitable for ages 4 to 16 years and range from R20 to R120 in price. Children and parents are invited to attend the sale and purchase a book or two!

Welcome

A warm welcome to Teacher Louret, as the new Reception Year teacher, and Teacher Hanlie, as the teacher assistant for Grade 1. We extend best wishes for a happy and productive time at Courtney House.

Speech and Drama Classes

Parents are urged to make payments for the Drama extra mural directly to the Drama Teacher. This can be done via an electronic transfer or cash. For further enquiries, please contact the school office.

Lunch Boxes

Please ensure that children bring an adequate supply of nutritious and protein-based snacks to school, especially during the colder months, as they often need to have slightly more to eat. This is particularly so for children who stay in aftercare till late.

Congratulations

We are thrilled to announce that Mikhail Kessery (Grade 2) has been selected to represent South Africa at the International Shotokan Development Karate Championships in Stellenbosch later this year. Mikhail will also receive Academy National Development Colours. Well done, Mikhail, on your exceptional achievement.

Used Toothbrushes

The Pre-Reception class requests any old and used toothbrushes to be handed in at the school office during the week. They require these for their art activities.

New Families

Senior Students

Checkpoint, IGCSE and A-Level students are reminded to continue studying and reviewing their syllabus content throughout the term. Afternoon time should be utilised effectively so that homework and studying is being done regularly and on an ongoing basis to ensure good results in their international examinations.

Junior Swimming

Swimming classes for the Pre-R to Grade 3 children shall commence the week of 18^th July. Although, children are encouraged to swim during the winter months as it is an indoor heated pool, we do not recommend that children who are sickly or prone to coughs, colds or respiratory infections participate in swimming during the colder months.

Stationery

Parents are asked to check that their child’s stationery supplies are still adequate for the remainder of the year and to top up, if necessary.

Ruler Clothing

Adri, from Ruler Clothing, our uniform supplier, is expecting her set of twins in September. She shall still be available but only to a limited degree between August and November. Youth Day Activity

To commemorate Youth Day on 16 June, all Courtney House children and students shall participate in an activity directed at issues facing the youth of today. To prepare for this, each child and student was requested to bring R5. This special activity will take place on Wednesday, 15 June, during the school morning.

Entrepreneurs’ Day

The Grade 2 class will have their entrepreneurs’ sale on Tuesday 14 June at the Junior Campus. Parents are urged to assist their child with the preparations thereof. For further information, Teacher Natasha may be contacted.

Sad Farewell

Our enthusiastic and spontaneous Reception Year teacher, Wendy, has decided to become a “stay-at-home” mommy to her two young children, and therefore, shall not be returning in the new term. We thank Wendy for the outstanding standard of work she has delivered and shall truly miss her exceptional talents and exuberant personality. We extend best wishes for her future happiness and wish her well.

Term End

The second term of the school year draws to a close on Wednesday 15 June at the normal time. The third term resumes on Tuesday 12 July.

Many families are travelling during the June-July holidays, so we wish them a safe, happy and fun-filled experience and look forward to their return in the new term.

Holiday School

There are NO fun holiday school programmes at Courtney House during the holiday periods. Teachers work exceptionally hard throughout the term and require a rest time and a period of time in which to prepare adequately for the next term.

Some senior students (Checkpoint, IGCSE and A/AS-Level) are required to participate in additional classes during this holiday period to prepare themselves for the Cambridge International Examinations toward the end of the year. Your child will have received notification of this from the specific subject teacher.
