Most people collect air miles but Civilian Gliding Instructor James Parker a former Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) at 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron has recently notched up 100 accumulated flying hours.

James has been involved with the Air Cadets for 7 years and did his gliding scholarship when he was 16 years old. He achieved his Silver Wings and completed one Solo flight in Aircraft Reg ZH 123 after 7hrs 55minutes whilst training at 637 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS).

James was lucky enough to get selected to stay on the unit at 637 VGS as a Flight Staff Cadet (FSC) after competing his glider scholarship and went on to achieve his Gold Wings by doing his advanced glider training.

After 15 flying hours James achieved Grade Two status qualifying him to fly the aircraft solo. He then commenced his Grade One training. After another 15 hours of training and a gruelling flight test with the Volunteer Gliding Squadrons Chief Flying Instructor he was qualified to fly in the right hand seat, which is the instructor's seat.

Coventry-based Liam Matthews jumped for victory and won gold at the recent Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing Air Cadet Athletics Championship held at Tudor Grange, Solihull.

Liam, a Cadet Sergeant at 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron ATC took gold in the senior cadet's high jump with a jump of 1.40m, and also won silver in the long jump.

The 18-year-old a King Henry VIII student won gold in the same event in 2009.

To keep in with the squadrons winning streak Cadet John Mallon 14, took gold in the junior 1500mtrs race completing the course in 5m.49s. This is John's first year at representing the squadron at the athletics event.

On May 16th members of Staff and Cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron Air Training Corps took the opportunity to take part in Kenilworth's Party in the Park.

Organised by Kenilworth Rotary Club, The Party in the Park ended the nine day Kenilworth Festival extravaganza.

The cadets had three objectives throughout the day; promote the Squadron and Air Training Corps in general, help the Rotary Club with the litter picking in the field, and demonstrate their drill abilities to a wider audience through a drill display. They succeed in all three!

The squadron's recruitment stand was amongst more than 200 stalls in Kenilworth's Abbey Fields, and party attracted thousands of visitors throughout the day.

The Squadrons stand attracted potential recruits and parents wishing to find out more about the organisation, and many leaflets were handed out and talks given to the potential recruits.

As well as the 'stands' the party in the park also featured an impressive array of displays and demonstrations, one of which the cadets were involved with.

During the course of the afternoon the cadets took to the field in front of the Crazy Bears stage and wowed the audience with their drill display.

Cadets and Staff from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron were flying on Ice at Coventry's Skydome ice rink to celebrate the end of exams and to start off the Squadrons birthday celebrations.

The cadets took to the ice like naturals and had fun skating around the rink trying to impersonate the professional figure skaters.

The evening was arranged by the Squadrons staff with help from Cadet Sergeant John Ormsby who works at the ice rink.
