Cheylesmore kids add dash to big day

CHILDREN at Howes Primary School got active for a day of races as part of their annual Sports Day.

Traditional events at the school, in Palermo Avenue, Cheylesmore, including the sack race and egg and spoon dash took place alongside sprint and javelin contests.

The day ended with an egg and spoon race for the teachers, won by Mr Jones - although calls for a stewards' inquiry have been made. Deputy head Paul Tarry said the sports day capped a fantastic sporting year for the school.

He said: "This year has been a bumper one for sports at Howes with the school football, cricket, rounders and swimming teams all winning competitions."

A GROUP of 11 pupils who have not missed a day of school all year met the Lord Mayor and went ice skating as a special treat.

Teachers at St Anne's Catholic Primary School in Chace Avenue, Willenhall, Coventry, organised a visit to the Council House and a session of ice skating at the Coventry Skydome for the dedicated youngsters.

The city's Lord Mayor, Cllr Jack Harrison showed the pupils, aged five to 10, around the Council House and presented each of them with a certificate for having a spotless attendance record.

Cllr Harrison, who introduced himself to the children as Jack, said: "All these pupils have 100 per cent attendance and they've all done very well."

Shantain Ncube, nine, said: "If I don't miss school because I learn more. I enjoy school."

Staff raised the cash for the trip by organising a disco earlier in the year.

PUPILS at King Henry VIII School in Coventry enjoyed making their own boardgames as part of enterprise week.

Year 8 students followed a special timetable where they experienced a new programme which revolved around the theme of enterprise.

Each form was divided into three teams and had to create a unique boardgame which would be sold to raise money for a chosen charity.
