CHILDREN at Howes Primary School got active for a day of races as part of their annual Sports Day.

Traditional events at the school, in Palermo Avenue, Cheylesmore, including the sack race and egg and spoon dash took place alongside sprint and javelin contests.

The day ended with an egg and spoon race for the teachers, won by Mr Jones - although calls for a stewards' inquiry have been made. Deputy head Paul Tarry said the sports day capped a fantastic sporting year for the school.

He said: "This year has been a bumper one for sports at Howes with the school football, cricket, rounders and swimming teams all winning competitions."

A GROUP of 11 pupils who have not missed a day of school all year met the Lord Mayor and went ice skating as a special treat.

Teachers at St Anne's Catholic Primary School in Chace Avenue, Willenhall, Coventry, organised a visit to the Council House and a session of ice skating at the Coventry Skydome for the dedicated youngsters.

The city's Lord Mayor, Cllr Jack Harrison showed the pupils, aged five to 10, around the Council House and presented each of them with a certificate for having a spotless attendance record.

Cllr Harrison, who introduced himself to the children as Jack, said: "All these pupils have 100 per cent attendance and they've all done very well."

Shantain Ncube, nine, said: "If I don't miss school because I learn more. I enjoy school."

Staff raised the cash for the trip by organising a disco earlier in the year.

ALMOST 3,000 women will be lining up in Coombe Abbey tonight to raise money in the Cancer Research Race for Life.

Organisers are hoping the weather is kinder than last year, when heavy rain turned the green fields into a mudbath.

The race is the second in the Coventry area following the run in Stoneleigh Park last month where more than 7,000 women took part despite more terrible weather.

Organiser Vikki Savery said the race at Coombe, which starts at 7pm, is full with 2,700 women signed up to take part.

They will be running, walking or jogging the 5km course, many in memory of loved ones or as survivors of cancer.

Vikki said: "It's the biggest it's ever been at Coombe.

"It's only been going here for three years and each time it gets bigger.

"Last year was a total washout but the women still turned out and took part, raising more than £200,000, so we know bad weather won't deter them. But of course we're still hoping for a bit of sunshine this year."

It is the 16th year Cancer Research has organised Race for Life events around the country.

So far four million people have taken part and the charity has raised more than £240 million towards trying to find a cure for cancer.

KINETON High School students are a Shining example of how 'pupil power' can be used to enhance learning.

A group of young people will be presenting in Coventry to a group of Head teachers from across the region as part of the national SHINE '09 Festival, explaining how they successfully led the learning of Mathematics in their school.

As part of the SHINE Festival, the pupils from Kineton High School, all aged between 11 and 18, will address a meeting of senior teachers from all over Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire.

The young people will describe how and why they successfully took over the teaching of Maths for a day.

They will be also be showing off some of the exciting activities they devised including: the Family Fortunes style game show, The Great Egg Drop, and mask and kite making activities.

They will explain in detail the challenges they faced and the learning achieved.

All the innovative activities took place as part of Cre8us's Creative Partnerships programme.

Jo Trowsdale, Director of Cre8us said, "We work in partnership with schools to enhance the learning and cultural experiences of young people.

The students at Kineton High School clearly demonstrated that they can successfully drive a project and lead the learning creatively and responsibly in their school.

Through projects like this, we help schools and other organisations that work with young people, to develop new and innovative approaches that enable them to acquire a wide range of creative skills that are vital for the modern world!"

By Jon Cleaver

The Coventry based care provider, The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, has won a top award in the Healthcare and Medical Research category at the 2009 National Charity Awards event held recently in London, for its work in improving the lives of people with dementia.

Called the Enriched Opportunities Programme, it has been running since 2002, and is implemented by specially trained support workers known as 'Locksmiths.'

Research carried out with residents who have participated, found that the trend towards improved cognitive function of thinking, reasoning and understanding skills, is prolonged for a longer period, and showed that residents were much less likely to feel depressed, and they rated their quality of life significantly better.

The study also showed that behaviours characterised by dementia that are often seen as normal consequences of the disease progressing, can be tackled and minimised.

Within the schemes and villages operated by ExtraCare, 268 residents have been directly helped, and 1,127 residents have indirectly benefited, as did the families of residents on the scheme.

Managing Director John Graham OBE who received the award said: "We're delighted to have been chosen for the award, which is reward for the residents, researchers and staff for their hard work on the programme."

GASPS and shrieks filled Coventry playgrounds when BMX gymnasts rolled in to celebrate bike week.

The daredevil bikers pulled off hair-raising stunts to inspire youngsters at Pearl Hyde, Potters Green and Sir Frank Whittle primary schools.

During the gravity-defying display the cyclists perched on their handlebars while travelling on one wheel and treated their bikes like unicycles, spinning up to 20 times on the spot while the children cheered them on.

The event, organised by Coventry Bike-It officer Andy Atkin, was to reward staff and pupils who have been cycling into school, and to encourage others to give it a go.

"It's not really dangerous," said BMXer Keelan Phillips, after admitting he falls off his bike on average 100 times a day.

"Ramp riding is dangerous because you're airborne. But here, we're at ground level competing against one another to pull off more difficult and more original tricks.

"It's regarded as an art form. We call it breakdancing on bikes."

Keelan and fellow rider Lee Musselwhite travel the country with Inertia Shows performing stunt shows for audiences of all ages and competing in 'flatland' BMX shows.

"The main point is to inspire the kids," said Lee.

"A lot of the time you find schools have people coming in to talk to kids about cycling.

"But with this they can relate to something cool instead of just being preached to about getting on your bike because it's healthy and good exercise.

"Our main selling point is that it's fun."

Reece Shaw, ten, from Binley, said: "I thought they were brilliant and I'm going to keep practising so I can be like them.

"I'd love to be able to spin on my wheel. Bike-It is good because you can practice your bike skills so you can ride safely on the road."

Alicia Fowles, nine, from Longford, said: "It makes everybody want to get out on their bikes. I'm definitely going to ride my bike more often and I want to try some of the tricks.

"My favourite part was when they started spinning around on their bikes really fast. That was really cool!"

Lauren Thorn, ten, from Binley, said: "It's made me want to get out on my bike, try some new things and race around with my friends."

On Sunday seasoned cyclists and absolute beginners are invited to try out a range of weird and wonderful bikes at the Biketastic festival in War Memorial Park between 11am and 3pm.

A JILTED wife who torched the Warwickshire home of her husband's mistress as she slept upstairs has been sent to a secure psychiatric unit.

Parish council clerk Alison Watson, of Walton, near Lutterworth, was yesterday made subject at Warwick Crown Court to an interim hospital order under the Mental Health Act.

She had previously pleaded guilty to arson being reckless whether the life was endangered.

Watson will be taken off remand at Peterborough Prison and sent to Annesley House in Nottingham, a low security unit, for an assessment period of up to 12 weeks.

Judge Christopher Hodson told her: "The psychiatrists who have seen you are all of the opinion that you are suffering from a mental health illness, and that this disorder is of a nature and degree which makes it appropriate for you to be detained in a hospital for treatment for your own benefit and the safety of others."

As previously reported, Watson used firelighters to torch the home of Valerie Forde, in Rowan Close, Binley Woods, in February, a month after finding out her doctor husband Duncan had been having an affair with the nurse for three years. Both work at University Hospital, in Coventry.

Ms Forde was woken by a smoke alarm and fled unhurt, although the house was badly damaged and she has only recently moved back in.

Prosecuting, Iain Willis told the court Watson, a clerk of Huncote Parish Council, in Leicestershire, was married for 20 years and had three children, but that Dr Watson began an affair with Ms Forde in 2006.

It was kept secret until January this year when Watson became aware of the affair after seeing some of her husband's computer records.

Mr Willis said: "Duncan Watson says that by the end of January the affair had come to an end and he did all he could to keep his family together, but there was a great deal of strain."

When he followed his wife to bed on February 19 she was asleep, but she was not there in the early hours of the morning when he received a frantic call from Ms Forde.

He was aware of a car turning onto the driveway and then saw his wife coming up the stairs in her nightclothes, but she claimed she had just got up to get a drink.

Mr Willis said: "It was clear the defendant had got up from her bed and driven for 40 minutes while under the influence of alcohol to the complainant's address and then started the fire."

Mr Willis added that when Watson was arrested she said she had no recollection of what had taken place, but accepted being responsible.
