City of York I No game Season has ended

City of York II v Ben Rhydding II Home I have asked the captain to email it directly to you at The Press

City of York III were away at Ben Rhydding III in their last game of the season and produced a strong team performance to round off the season in style. There was only one goal in it at half-time, however, and that was a City goal scored by Greg Sykes. After the break City attacked strongly and the second goal came from Mike Sansoni after a perfact pass from Sykes. It was a somewhat fortuitous event that brought City’s third goal, a firm strike in the general direction of Rhydding’s goal being deflected in by a defender but it gave City a comfortable lead. At this stage City eased up and gave Rhydding the opportunity to strike back at a short corner and this gave the hosts the heart to add a second a few minutes later. In the final stages it was Rhydding who looked the more dangerous whilst City clung on for victory. Final Score: Ben Rhydding III 2 City of York III 3

City of York IV v Lincoln II Home Cancelled - Lincoln could not raise a team

City of York VII were at home to West Yorkshire Police and found themselves out-muscled in the early stages and being two goals down by half-time. After the interval City rallied and began to exert pressure of their own, pulling a goal back through Arron Solanki and then came close to scoring the equalizer. Had they netted the chance the whole complexion of the game would have changed but as it was, Police scored later in the game to come out convincing winners. Final Score: City of York VII 1 West Yorkshire Police 3

Another fine spirited performance from the York side who were unlucky not to take all the points having been a goal to the good at half time through Reader and Peter Fitton.

York played with good discipline, composure and commitment for much of the game and were unlucky in two of the goals conceded.

Guys - I expect that everybody will support the club raffle. Essentially you need to give me of Greg £10 each.What you do with the tickets is up to you but iof you want them entering to the raffle please send the stubs to Greg Sykes.

Heaviest Player of the season - Alex Fletcher who pipped the skipper by about half a stone at the death of the season.

Leading goal scorer - Nick Kay (17) out of 59 scored, runners up A Felcher and N Reader (11 each) - that will teach me to let him take all the flicks.

Least washed student of the season (the "Stranger to soap" award) - Ollie Harrison
Most injured player of the season - Roy Newton (just ahead of Andy (Mr Angry) Potts)

Box to box award (but not now he's engaged) - Nick Kay
Shortest Jock of the season and most original response to an email - Steve Thompson
Tallest umpire of the season and most consistent prompt reply to emails - Richard Robson

and I might just award myself the Fat Boy Slim award

On a serious note we've had a pretty good season and retained our Div 7 status despite some pretty tough games against a lot of strong student sides. We've had our ups and downs but we've stuck together and created some good team spirit. We've put together some really good team performances. Both games against York Uni come to mind as well as the game at Brigg, the game against Boston Spa at York, a big win at Donnie and of course last week against Bankers. If the league structure remains the same staying up will be important as we should have a more evenly matched division.

We've stuck well with the two youngsters and managed to give them full games nearly every week and they have both come on as a result. Joe has showed increasing confidence resulting an extended run at right back and Peter Fitton came into his own once he played up front and finally after a deluge of chances broke his duck and hopefully this will be the start of many more.

We also managed a couple of well attended and enjoyable team socials and ensured that the boys could attend which was a good effort as well as having provided good support for the race night.

Player of the season by a clear majority was Mark Moisley and well deserved it is though I'd like to praise all our players as we have never stinted on effort and we showed that we can play as a unit without the help of 'strangers'.

Finally, being skipper can be a pain and having me as skipper can have the same effect. Please can I thank all of the 8th team for the support and help / cooperation I've received all season - its ben a great team to skipper and I hope that everybody has had a fair crack.

I'd also like to especially thank Rhi and Greg for all their organisational help with fixtures teams and umpires - and before it sounds like the Oscars I'd like to thank Sarah the tea lady for helping us to ensure we could always fed the opposition.

I hope you all have a great summer.

Forgot this (one of the reasons why no-one was available yesterday !)

City of York Veterans took part in a National Veterans Cup Quarter-Final on Sunday. They were away to West Wiltshire and, after a long journey, took part in a tough match. After the first quarter City were one goal down but equalised before half-time with a goal from Pali Sudhar. In the second half the play was relentless but Alex Fletcher came up with the winner, to put City in the Semi-Finals in a fortnight's time. Their opponents will be Huddersfield who were given a bye when their opponents Ipswich, last year's victors over City, dropped out. Final Score: West Witshire Veterans 1 City of York Veterans 2

In case nothing else comes your way here are a few details that have just been phoned to me,

City of York I were at home to Rotherham I and, against weak opposition who are facing relegation, found it difficult to maintain their hockey discipline. Instead of playing their fast breakaway style they allowed themselves to be dragged into Rotherham's slower pace but, even so, by half-time City were three goals up. After the interval City pulled themselves together and took charge of the game, more or less scoring at will. One highlight was a solo run and volley goal by Alex Cockram, but he went on to score another from a short corner and there were other goals from Tom Feasby, Olly Couttie, Richard Cockram, Luke Ramli(2) and a hat-trick from skipper Chris Wilson. City are now one point away from a promotion spot and much may depend on Chester's fortunes. Final Score: City of York I 10 Rotherham I 0

City of York II v Leeds Adel Carnegie II Away Report forwarded separately

City of York III, at home to Wakefield III, reacted poorly to last week’s confirmation of promotion and began this game very sluggishly. Two minutes after the opening whistle, Wakefield took the lead and it took another ten minutes for City to get into gear and reply through skipper Ed Shouksmith. From then on the game became an even contest with Wakefield levelling and then Greg Sykes providing a City equalizer before half-time. After the break, Josh Longster put City ahead for the first time in the game and another Sykes goal widened the margin but, despite this,the home team could not relax to enjoy the game and play good, flowing hockey and a late Wakefield goal added to the tension. Final Score: City of York III 4 Wakefield III 3

City of York IV were away at Rotherham III and adopted a tactical style of defending in depth and relying on counter-attacks for their goals. It proved to be effective as one such attack after five minutes of play, involving Alex Herriott and Rob Prentice led to the opening goal from Tim Lister. City added a second through Prentice and then, after a square pass from Lister, Sam Butterfield was on hand to net City’s third. Before half-time Herriott scored to give City a commanding four-goal lead. As City took their foot off the pedal in the second half the game became more even but Herriott scored City’s fifth before Rotherham scored a consolation. Final Score: Rotherham III 1 City of York IV 5

City of York VII were at home to Harrogate III and took part in a disappointing game for them. There was little to choose between the teams but the visitors made more of their chances and were a goal in the lead at half-time. City enjoyed a good spell in the third quarter and came up with a short corner goal from Steve Archer but Harrogate soon replied from one of their own short corners. In the final quarter Gate were gifted a third goal to give them a margin of victory that was somewhat flattering. Final Score: City of York VII 1 Harrogate III 3

City of York VIII v York University II Away Report forwarded separately

City of York X (Badgers) entertained Huddersfield Badgers and made a ropey start, playing some of their worst hockey of the season, so much so that Huddersfield were able to take an early lead. Fortunately, Matt Hays was able to equalize for City before the interval. Things looked up after the break but it was Huddersfield who went into the lead in the early stages and this was just what City needed to kick-start their game. From that point all the traffic went one way and with goals from Danny Ellwood (2), Phil Worrall, Luke Doran, Lewis Inman and Rory Ainslie City ran out easy winners. Final Score: City of York X 7 Huddersfield Badgers 2.

2nds gained their first point of the season, however felt as though they had been robbed 3 valuable points.
York started the game well coming close a few times to scoring, with Dave Burns short corner drag flick hitting the post, Leeds Adel had a few chances to get a goal but were denied by some tough defending. The half ended 0-0.

The 2nd half was much the same with York applying much of the pressure, however against the run of play a mistake at the back gave Adel the lead. York continued to make chances but could not convert, a Rich Chandler strike came agonisingly close but was saved by the goal keepers helmet. York then got the equaliser with a superb run and strike from the top of the d by Pete Richardson. In the closing 15 minutes York had 2 goals dissallowed by the umpires with no explanation, this resulted in a number of appeals and in the heated debates Pete Richardson was shown the Yellow, as well as Ben Smith who had his Yellow upgraded to a Red. The match ended in a 1-1 draw which under normal circumstances we would have been over joyed however we rightly felt we had been robbed of the 3 vital points. York need 2 wins from their last 2 games or relegation is certain.

These students are the best drilled in this league - but they play three games a week and train twice a week so they should be and they had already won our league last week. Against this backdrop City put up a solid and organised performance where the students dominated without really penetrating. Having shipped three goals City took the game for the last ten minutes of the first half and much of the second half and made life more interesting by pulling a goal back when Reader tidied up the rebound from Peter Fittons shot. York created a number of good chances and in the end were unlucky to concede a fourth goal in the dying seconds. A great team performance that needs to be repeated next week.
The students then blotted their copybook by eating all the food without offering any to the opposition - looks like the recession is hitting harder than we thought!!

York suffered their 16 straight loss of the season, although the 3-0 score line was harsh to a strong York performance.
York went down to 2 early goals when we were caught napping but we turned it around and had alot of possession for the remainder of the half, however with a number of shots and short corners York were un-able to capitalise with the Lincon keeper making some great saves and the York shots being poor.

2nd half again York dominated but were again un-able to find the back of the net, through out the match we had 12 short corners adding to an overall total of 30 shots on target but the luck was not with us this season. In the last 10 lincoln added their 3rd to finish off the game.

The York team were extremely dissapointed as this was a match that was there for the win, but not converting the 30 shots lost us the game. Very promising performance especially with a clash against 2nd from bottom Leeds Adel 3rd's next week who have 5 points.

City of York 1 Leeds 5 (HT 1-2)
City did well to hold their own for much of the first half against one of the top teams in the league and showed good resilience to equalise through Mark Moisley. The game possibly turned just before half time when Leeds capitalised on a mistake that gifted them an underserved lead. In the end the opposition were lacklustre and the final margin flattered their performance.

Next week we are at York Uni - meet at the Uni pitch at 11:30 for a 12:00 start.

Leeds University men's 1st XI 4 - 3 City of York men's 1st XI

City of York men's 1st XI's promotion hopes now hang in the balance as they slipped to defeat at table toppers Leeds University on Saturday, whilst rivals Chester won to move into 2nd place by a solitary point.

Things started badly for City, who were a goal down in the opening minutes, as a long ball from midfield found a striker in space in the D, and his cross was tapped home at the far post by an unmarked colleage.

York levelled when Alex Cockram started and finished a move, sweeping upfield before converting the return ball into the D.

Leeds Uni looked dangerous on the counter, and when a ball into the D struck a foot they duly converted the penalty corner to regain the lead. Things got worse for York as just moments later the hosts went 3-1 up with an almost carbon copy of their opening goal.

York rallied and almost pulled one back just before the break, when a superb passing move saw Tom Feasby's effort agonisiling go the wrong side of the post.

York showed greater intensity in the second half against their tiring opponents, but were struck by a killer blow mid-way through the half, when a quickly taken free hit left Leeds Uni with several men over in the D, and they made no mistake in converting.

York pulled one goal back when skipper Chris Wilson netted his 20th of the season but further chances came and went for York, but they were unable to get the goal that would have got them back into the game, despite dominating the closing quarter of the game.

With the final hit of the game Ollie Couttie grabbed a consolation from a penalty corner.

Trailing by just one point, the side must return to winning ways in the final two games and hope that Chester drop points to clinch the final promotion spot.

City of York III, at home to Sheffield Hallam IV, had to go through the unaccustomed pain of suffering defeat, but as they had created few chances

and squandered the ones they did create they had little to complain about.

The game was one of strong challenges and physical encounters but enjoyable nonetheless and City took the lead after the first quarter with a goal from Greg Sykes. Hallam equalized before half-time and the second half was pretty much a carbon copy of the first half with Jonny Kilmartin playing well for City. The only difference was that Hallam scored in the last few minutes to take the three points. Final Score: City of York III 1 Sheffield Hallam IV 2

City of York IV were away at Halifax II and took part in a nervy game as both teams struggled to get away from the bottom of the table. It wasn’t a classic game as York went on the defensive to shut out Halifax and then relied on breakaways. After fifteen minutes Rob Prentice took an aerial pass from Graham Cook, came in from the right and scored the opening goal. City then added a second when Tim Lister put in an excellent shot. After the break, Halifax replied at a short corner but City hit back soon after when a Sam Baker shot was stunningly jabbed home by Lister and then, a few minutes before the end, Mark Richardson passed the ball to Lister who slipped it to the unmarked Prentice to score his second by lifting the ball over the keeper. Final Score: Halifax II 1 City of York IV 4

City of York V, at home to Old Malton, second in the league, adopted a policy of damage limitation even though they were on top at the start of the game. Malton were surprised at the resistance and it took some time before they could breach City’s defence in which Chris Scoffield excelled. Unfortunately, at the end of the first quarter, City’s keeper, Ed McCartney-Moor had to retire injured and the pads were passed to Chris Allerton who went on to play an admirable game between the sticks. At half-time Malton led by two goals and then scored two more in the second half but, playing as a unit, City never gave up the fight. Final Score: City of York V 0 Old Malton 4

City of York VI v Sheffield Hallam VI Away Report forwarded separately

City of York VII were at home to King Cross I and went ahead early in the game with a goal from James Wilson. Unfortunately, City conceded the equalizer soon afterwards but then buckled down to the task, going into the lead with a goal from skipper Keith Wilson and then extending it with a good, slick-passing hockey goall from Josh Longster before half-time. After the break Longster added two more to his tally and was ably supported up front by Lewis Mortimer and Arron Solanki. King Cross were unable to get into the game in the second half and could find no way of getting through City’s defence. Final Score: City of York VII 5 King Cross I 1

City of York VIII travelled away to Boston Spa III and played well from the opening whistle. Unfortunately, City were always vulnerable to the quick break and suffered from five of these before half-time came along. In the second half things became a little more equal and saw Peter Fitton score his first senior goal for City but, on its own, it wasn’t enough to alter the final outcome. Final Score: Boston Spa III 6 City of York VIII 1

City of York men's 1st XI 10 - 1 Manchester men's 1st XI

City of York men's 1st XI kept up their excellent winning and goalscoring form as they hit relegation threatened Manchester for ten goals at Oaklands on Saturday.

The side had succombed to defeat at the hand's of Manchester's unorthodox style earlier in the season and went into the game looking to avenge that result.

Things did not start well for the host's however who found themselves a goal down within the opening two minutes, after a dangerous cross into the D was diverted into the corner by a Manchester striker.

York responded strongly to the early set back, and were level soon afterwards as skipper Chris Wilson crashed an unstoppable strike into the roof of the net.

Nick Carter then gave York the lead when he was given acres of space at the top of the D at a penalty corner to beat two men and pick his spot. Steve Paterson then netted City's third as his powerful strike beat the keeper at his near post.

The momentum was now firmly with the hosts and Alex Cockram's drag flick from a penalty corner made it four before Wilson scored his second from close range to make it 5-1 at half-time.

York continued with positive intent in the second half, and it wasn't long before they found the net again.

First Lee Cuffe turned his man and slipped it past the on-rushing keeper before Wilson completed his hat-trick for the third game in a row, deflecting home Matt Redwood's shot, then grabbed his fourth of the game slotting home the rebound after his initial shot had been saved.

The side had reached double figures once already this season against Rotherham, and reached the landmark again when Tom Feasby secured the decisive touch to an inviting cross to make it nine and Ollie Couttie converted from a penalty corner to complete the rout.

With Chester still just two points behind York outside the promotion spots, the side now travel to leaders Leeds University next Saturday. The students are unbeaten in the league so far this season, with 16 wins out of 18, but York have now won 9 out of their last 10 games, scoring 62 goals in the process, and will be hopeful of securing a positive result against a side they were denied a deserved point against earlier in the season when they were beaten by a last minute goal.

CoY Badgers XI lost a top of the table clash at leaders Rotherham 2-0. CoY scorned a host of chances in both halves and could easily have won by a wide margin. Rotherham's goalkeeper was in inspired form, making save after save (and winning their man of the match award with 9 votes!!).

A goal in each half, the second form a poorly defended penalty corner, sealed the win for Rotherham.

Matt Andrew played well in defence for CoY, reading the game well.

10 man York fought bravely and went into half time still level at 0 0. Early in the second half Sheffield mishit a short corner that then took a fluke deflection to beat Jon Chappel, who had an outstanding game. York continued to press after this and Barry Legg put Iain Mason through one-on-one with the keeper, only to be brought down for what looked like a stonewall penalty. Unfortunately, the Sheffield umpire ruled otherwise. Despite some good chances and a number of short corners, York couldn't equalise.

City of York IX were at home to Tadcaster II and took an early lead through Tim Jolly but, soon after, lost the services of their inspirational leader Mark Pryce who took a nasty blow across the knee. Tadcaster equalised before half-time but, with Pryce coaching from the sideline, City dominated the second half, Andy Dent scoring their second and Jolly striking home at a short corner. City of York III were away at Hull III and should have knocked up a cricket score. City made hard work of the first quarter as they found the water-based pitch unfamiliar and unpredictable but once things began to settle down they began to dominate. City took the lead with a flicked goal by Pat Herriott at a short corner and the same player followed it up with another in similar circumstances soon after. Hull were very much out of the game at this stage and Michael Sansoni took advantage of a dreadful goalkeeping error to score City’s third so that they were able to go in at half-time with a commanding lead. After the interval City could sense a score in double figures but tried too hard to achieve it. Although they exerted all the pressure there was only a Phil Hamilton goal to show for their efforts so Hull must be given some credit for keeping the score at a respectable level. Final Score: Hull III 0 City of York III 4

City of York IV entertained Gainsborough Roses II and in the opening stages found themselves in a tactical battle of wits as both midfields tried to carve out openings. Midway through the half the stalemate was broken when a move involving Graham Cook and Ben Foster ended with a through-pass for Andy Wilson to tap home. Before half-time City doubled their lead when Rob Prentice scored with a fine shot following a well-rehearsed short corner routine. Fifteen minutes into the second half Tim Lister began a move with a surging run down the left flank followed by a cut inside and a Roses infringement. Lister then left the ball, took up a position in the goalmouth and efficiently deflected in the well-struck free hit. Roses came back into the game with a late goal but two minutes from time Sam Butterfield scored for City to finish off a superb passing move. Final Score: City of York IV 4 Gainsborough Roses II 1

City of York V were away at Huddersfield III and found themselves involved in the cliché “a game of two halves”. From the first whistle City struggled to find their form, being virtually pinned in their own half and by half-time Huddersfield had scrambled in three goals. With nothing but pride to salvage City came out after the break and dominated the game. Excellent defending by Tony Neeve and Olly Sanderson, coupled with secure but creative midfield play by Joel Wilson and Matt Collinson, gave City the edge and chances were created. Fine approach work by Will Sorby followed by a driven ball across Huddersfield’s “D” led to a goal by Oliver Bonney but, try as they might, other goals eluded the visitors. Final Score: Huddersfield III 3 City of York V 1

York started brightly and had a number of chances in the first 15 minutes, with David Dick coming especially close. Huddersfield started to get back into the game and after substitutions caused York to lose shape had the better of the last 10 minutes of the half. York completely dominated the second half but let Huddersfield score twice on the break. Chris Allerton pulled one back with 5 minutes to go but York couldn't get an equaliser

A good strong first half performance with two goals from Nick Kay (inc PF) and Reader put the game beyond Bradford. Ater the break York extended the lead with a goal from Mark Moisley before Brdford responded as York eased back. The result was never in doubt as Kay got his third and fourth goals and Moisley got a second whilst Bradford got a couple more including a last minute short corner conversion.

The beer and the curry will taste better tonight!!

Chapeltown men's 1st XI 2-6 City of York men's 1st XI

City of York men's 1st XI kept their noses in front in the North League Division One promotion race, but only after being given a scare away at Chapeltown on Saturday.

On a slow, sticky pitch York went a goal to the good early on thanks to skipper Chris Wilson. The lead was doubled mid-way through the first half as Wilson converted after good wing play by Alex Cockram.

York then struggled to put their fluid passing game together, increasingly giving possession away, and the hosts came back into the game.

Minutes before half-time Chapeltown grabbed a goal back when their forward was given too much space in the D to square to a colleague for a simple tap in.

Early in the second half Chapeltown stunned the visitors by drawing level from a well worked penalty corner after York had been temporarily reduced to 10 men.

The equaliser sparked York into life and the side quickly hit back to restore a two-goal cushion. First Cockram slotted home from a penalty corner, before he set up Wilson's hat-trick from close range.

Chapeltown were beginning to tire, and York took full advantage in the closing stages. Rich Cockram converted when put through on goal, before Michael Gamble intercepted a stray pass and took the ball on himself to find the net.

With other rivals also winning the side remain two points ahead of Chester and three ahead of Alderley Edge in second place, with four games remaining. Next week the side host Manchester looking to avenge defeat in Lancashire earlier in the season.

Might be worth trying to get this into the Press before the usual round up on a Tuesday.

The men's 1st XI indoor team have picked up two trophies in a week, winning the Yorkshire indoor league and cup double.

The side clinched the league title on Tuesday night thanks to a 14-6 victory over Chapeltown and a 5-0 walkover against Wakefield.

The side lost just once in their six games, an 8-3 reverse against Doncaster, but boasted impressive victories against National league sides Hull (5-2) and Sheffield University Bankers (6-5), as well as a 9-1 victory against Leeds Adel Carnegie during their campaign.

A week earlier the side had triumphed in the cup after beating Wakefield 8-3 and Sheffield University Bankers 5-4.

City of York III were away to Huddersfield II and suffered the unfamiliar feeling of disappointment at being defeated. In the opening stages City’s defence was abysmal and the hosts took the lead but within minutes Jonny Kilmartin replied for City to put them on level terms. Defensive errors cost City dearly before half-time when Huddersfield were able to put away two more goals and, after the break, go further ahead with a fourth goal. The game was a heated affair with four yellow cards being shown although this number did not reflect the number of offences committed. With five minutes to go City hit back with two open-play goals from Greg Sykes and in the last minute were awarded a short corner but a goal was not forthcoming so the equalizer eluded them. Final Score: Huddersfield II 4 City of York III 3

City of York IV were at home to Airedale I who turned up with only ten men. York applied pressure from the start and after ten minutes went one goal up thanks to Ben Prentice. Airedale settled down from this point and played good hockey despite being one man short and fifteen minutes later scored the equalizer. In the second half City began well but from a short corner Airedale went ahead and then closed the game down, thwarting all City’s attacks and preventing even a hint of a goal. Final Score: City of York IV 1 Airedale I 2

City of York VII no fixture

City of York VIII, at home to Wakefield V, found themselves up against a much-strengthened side from the one they had met previously and before half-time were two goals down. After the break City put in a much more determined effort and two goals from Alex Fletcher, one a flick, put them on equal terms. A third goal, scored by a reverse- stick strike from the top of the “D” by James Taylor put City ahead but Wakefield struck back to put things level. City deserved to have won this encounter but Fletcher was denied his hat-trick goal as the final whistle went before his shot could cross the Wakefield goal line. Final Score: City of York VIII 3 Wakefield V 3

On Sunday City of York VIII played a re-arranged fixture against Hull University II at home. Despite the lack of quality in the Hull side, City were unable to take advantage, playing well but failing to create enough clear shots on goal. Some of this was due to there being six team changes between Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, leading to a somewhat disjointed effort. The students were two goals up at half-time and added a third in the second half before Harry O’Patrick was able to come up with a consolation goal. Final Score: City of York VIII 1 Hull University II 3

City of York IX no fixture

City of York X (Badgers) entertained Rotherham Badgers but sent them home empty-handed. Up to this game Rotherham were top of the Division, with York in runners-up spot and the game began slowly with each team wary of the other. At the end of the first quarter City stepped up a gear and took control of affairs. Phil Worrall, Danny Ellwood and Lewis Inman all scored to give City a commanding half-time lead. In the second half City continued to dictate terms and went further ahead with goals from Matt Hays, Luke Doran and Rory Ainslie. Final Score: City of York X (Badgers) 6 Rotherham Badgers 0
