While we certainly agree, having run dozens of events and classes in the virtual world of Second Life. Yet Bill offered some great insights and inspiration.

Here are his top five reasons to consider using virtual worlds for learning (see his full post titled, Virtual Worlds, Can They Save Us All?):

Death of distance: We’re able to learn, network and collaborate anytime, from anywhere.

World-class content: With a few connections, we can learn from the top thought leaders in their fields without having to travel and pay top-dollar to do so.

Practice and preparation: We're using virtual worlds as playgrounds where we can create and solve problems without real-world consequences. Call it virtual crisis planning.

Engagement: Shy students and colleagues open up and participate more freely in a virtual setting.

Collaboration: Folks in many locations are gathering virtually to work and learn together.

This book does both.

Here is my review of Learning in 3D: Adding a New Dimension to Enterprise Learning and Collaboration.

I think this quote captures the book and the idea pretty well,

"...learning leaders would do well to pay heed to Gloria Gery’s assertion that: “We don’t need new technology, we just need new thinking.”

This is the author's clarion call to all of us involved in helping people learn in new and powerful ways:

"The enterprise learning function is responsible for developing the talent that drives sustainable competitive advantage for the firm. In remaining bound to the formal classroom as the primary learning modality, the learning function is significantly limiting its ability to deliver strategic value to the enterprise at precisely the time when the ability to learn and adapt in perpetuity is becoming a core capability required by all firms. Just as businesses have had to change their strategies, structures, and infrastructures to remain competitive in increasingly dynamic market environments, the learning function must also adapt to meet the dynamic needs of the enterprise it serves. Ironically, while business has clearly learned to change, the learning function itself has not."

I was fortunate enough to meet both of the authors separately at two very cool conference I attended. I met Tony O'Driscoll at Fusion Productions DigitalNow Conference in April, 2010 where he talked about the Immernet - the next iteration of the internet. And just in time for the "gamer generation" who are looking for new ways to collaborate in immersive learning environments.

The almost one week later I met Karl Kapp at the Meridian Learn & Know Conference where he gave us a shout out on his blog Kapp Notes. Karl had the audience's heads spinning as they were trying to grasp what this might mean to their traditional learning systems.

If you want to see the future of learning (which is already here), get this book now!

Answer: Yes, if you travel via Second Life.

Yesterday I particpated on a panel at the MBAA International Conference in Chicago this week, except I did not get on a plane. I joined them from inside of Second Life right from CPA Island.

The program titled, Teaching IFRS: Technological Innovations and Best Practices is a moderated panel by the Chair: William Miller, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and features Panelists:

Mark Holtzblatt, Roosevelt University

Tom Hood, Maryland Association of CPAs

Norbert Tschakert, San Diego State University

I got invited to this after meeting Norbert at a Pearson Accounting Educators Symposium last year. He and the oether members of the panel are doing some real innoavtive teaching methods and using them to bring IFRS into the college classrooms. They discussed how they used student produced videos, technologies liked Linked in to find experts and start dialogs, and looking ahead at technology aids to teaching like social media and mobile.

I hope I added to the conversation by sharing our experience with Second Life as a learning environment, and a meeting environment, and share the stories of several accounting educators I have met in Second Life.

Here are a couple of resources that my fellow panelists wanted to make available:

A student video titled An Open Letter to Educators

A new study about video use in higher education http://library.nyu.edu/about/Video_Use_in_Higher_Education.pdf

In case you missed the major announcement yesterday, Linden Lab released its beta of the new Second Life Viewer. The launch itself was noteworthy as it used social media and the Building 43 team to create buzz and offer a great demo and interview between Robert Scoble and Linden Lab, CEO Mark Kingdon.

The new viewer is the beginning of the next era of Second Life which will feature even more integration with the social web, more development tools, and more collaboration tools. I am excited by these developments. Although we never did think SL needed a "second life", we have found it to be a terrific environment for training and collaboration. Then there is the first ever Accounting music video produced in Second Life and released on Valentine's Day, If I were an auditor.

Check out the interview with Scoble and Kingdon, check out the detailed description on the Second Life blog, then download the new viewer here. I downloaded it and installed with no problems, love the interface and starting to figure out all of the new features.

We were the first CPA presence in SL (since 2007) and now have two islands (CPA Island & CPA Island 2) dedicated to training, meeting, and an accounting education pavilion for students and educators. Look for our group in world, SLACPA (Second Life Association of CPAs).
