CAPE MAY, NJ, Sept. 18, 2017 — Thank you to everyone who came out for our annual flag ceremony as we remembered fourteen years without Brian. Cape May NJ was a favorite childhood vacation spot, and on this day Brian’s flag flew high above Sunset Beach in his honor.

This ceremony is repeated each day from May through October, honoring the casket flags of US veterans from sunrise to sunset. At sunset the flag is lowered by the family of the veteran while Taps plays. The flag is folded with honor, and the ceremony ends with the National Anthem. Each night, this brief Flag Ceremony is enjoyed by many vacationers on the beach and boaters in the bay.

The CPT Brian Faunce Memorial Fund presented its fourteenth annual ROTC award to graduating Penn State University senior Hannah Levine. This award is given to the Penn State Army ROTC student who best demonstrates the spirit, leadership and courage of CPT Faunce.

Collegiate Accomplishments

Cadet Hannah Levine is a senior studying Public Relations with minors in Information Sciences and Technology, and Military Studies. Hannah earned Dean’s List every semester so far, including multiple semesters with a 4.0 GPA. She also exceeds the 300-point maximum on the Army Physical Fitness Test!

Hailing from the Hazleton area in northeastern Pennsylvania, Hannah is proud to be a part of the Nittany Lion Battalion serving as the Cadet Battalion Commander. Cadet Levine hopes to branch Military Intelligence with a branch detail of Field Artillery in the active duty component next spring.

Additional Awards

In the spring of 2015, Levine was awarded the College of Communications Davis Award by the Don Davis Program in Ethical Leadership in recognition for work promoting responsibility and integrity within the college. Levine was also selected as the College of Communications Representative for the 2015 General Electric Student Leadership Workshop, where she worked closely with GE engineers and business professionals.

The CPT Brian Faunce Memorial Fund presented its eleventh annual ROTC award to graduating Penn State University senior Matthew Wolfel. This award is given to the Penn State Army ROTC student who best demonstrates the spirit, leadership and courage of CPT Faunce.

Upon commissioning in December 2016, CDT Wolfel hopes to branch into the active duty component as an armor officer. The $1,500 CPT Brian Faunce Memorial Award will help launch his military career with a gift card to AAFES (for the purchase of uniforms, boots, and other required gear) and an additional $500 cash for related expenses.

Collegiate Accomplishments

Matthew is a Civil Engineering major who holds the highest APFT score record in the Nittany Lion Battalion. He made the Dean’s List five out of seven semesters, and was awarded the Superior Cadet Award twice in three years.

He is a four-year member of the Penn State ROTC Sandhurst Team and a three-year member of the six-time 2nd Freedom BDE Champion Ranger Challenge Team. CDT Wolfel served as team leader for two years on both the Sandhurst and Ranger Challenge Teams. who earned a 3.43 GPA. His Cadet Duty position was Charlie Company Commander.

It’s been a long journey but we finally have a Memorial Marker to honor Brian in Arlington National Cemetery, Section MK.

A service with Full Honors is planned for Thursday, May 7th. The family is hosting a reception afterwards at Ft Myers Officers Club for socializing, snacks, and cash bar. All are welcome!

After ten successful golf tournaments, the CPT Brian Faunce Memorial Fund committee has decided that this year, 2014, was our last.

And boy did we close out the tradition with a bang! We had our most players ever – over 170! – and the rain held off, making for a another great day on the links.

As always, the prizes were abundant and fun was had by all.

Thank you to all our players, volunteers, friends and family who came out to remember Brian with us. We think he would be proud of all the good work we are doing in his name.
