I first discovered yoga…shhhhh don’t tell…because I wanted Madonna’s arms.

After my first class I was hooked. This was a physical form like no other! I didn’t have to jump around the world or stand up on an imaginary bike hill to get burning in my legs. As I continued to come back to my mat, something else would happen. I would feel more rooted in my physical body, calmer in my mind, and more conscious of my thoughts. I was intrigued.

Where was this new found calm, balance, and peace of mind coming from?

What began as an outer physical workout regime turned into a home coming, an inner trek to connect to my own True Nature. I quickly learned that asanas (physical postures) are only one of eight limbs on the yoga path. The eight limbs of yoga are:

Yamas: how you treat others and the world around you~ non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, non-greediness;

Niyamas: how you treat yourself~ cleanliness, contentment, spiritual austerity, self-study, surrender to Source;

Asana: physical practice;

Pranayama: breath control;

Pratyahara: withdrawal of senses;

Dharana: concentration;

Dhyana: meditation; and

Samadhi: absorption.

Yoga philosophy is rooted in 25 principles, one of them being Isvara Pranidhana (God, Source, Great Spirit, the Sacred). After consciously embracing this philosophy for years, I continue to tread the yogic path because at the heart of yoga is the belief that there is a place within us that is non-changing, whole, and complete. This place is Source.

To embody the yamas is to recognize that all things are a reflection of Source. Ahimsa, or non-violence, the first concept along the eight-fold path, prompts me to hold veneration for all aspects of life, from the simplest of mosquitos (I didn’t say it was always easy) to the more dynamic concept of how I respect and care for mother nature.

One of the most difficult, yet profound as far as healing along the yogic path goes for me, has unfolded organically as I practice the niyamas. I have had to learn a new way to interact with myself. Before yoga, there was so much disconnect between various aspects of myself. I had expended so much energy hiding those places of self-loathing, shame, and fear of unworthiness from being exposed.

In seeing myself as Sacred, I have been given permission to listen to the wisdom my body holds. I have learned to appreciate and celebrate all that is right with me instead of focusing on what I am lacking. I have learned that all parts of me are acceptable and necessary along the path towards Self-realization.

As I step onto my mat and flow back and forth, in and out of poses I connect to Source.

As I sink into a forward fold, I bow to myself, acknowledging that place of wholeness within myself

As I expand my heart open in a backbend, I surrender to Source.

Through this sacred movement of prayer, all of my areas of resistance are smoothed away, exposing me to my inner most Authentic Self.

Moving towards stillness by sitting in meditation reveals my deepest thoughts of separation and disconnect. Learning to sit without judgment allows me to cultivate a gentle compassion towards the darkest aspects of myself, the parts I wish to hide from others. By connecting to these areas within me, I am more capable of connecting and holding tolerance for those same areas in others.

Yoga connects us to the divine in all things by treating others and ourselves with reverence by stepping onto our mats through movement of prayer, and by sitting still with ourselves, in an attempt to come home to the beauty and Sacredness present within.

For me, yoga has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. It has brought me home to my-Self and connected me to my life’s purpose, holding space for others to more authentically connect to their own True Nature.

Namaste’

Through her own healing journey, Carrie has become a genuine example of the resiliency of spirit. Her core teachings integrate yoga postures (asanas), breath awareness (pranayama), Vipassana meditation, mindfulness, and humor to guide students to their own journey of intention, authenticity, and uncovering their life’s purpose. In 2005 Carrie co-opened Inside The Bungalow, yoga studio and cafe, with the intention of providing a Sacred space where students can come home to their own True Nature.

For as long as we humans have been creating art, we have used it as a way to connect to the divine. From ancient cave paintings in Southern Africa and Europe to Tibetan sand mandalas and Aboriginal dreamtime paintings, creativity forms part of our spiritual practices across the globe.

On Wednesday, February 1st I will be joining Traci Logan Wood on Pagans Tonight Radio to talk about sacred arts and crafts, with particular attention to incorporating creative projects in deity worship and ancestor reverence.

Please join us Wednesday, February 1st at 7PM PST on Pagans Tonight Radio Network on BlogTalkRadio.

During the show I may refer to the following craft projects and resources:

Brigid Crosses

Brigid Crosses, made of reeds or straw from the most recent harvest, are traditionally made on Imbolc to ask Goddess Brigid (also known as Saint Bridget) for protection of your hearth for the coming year.

How to make a St. Brigid Cross - easy-to-follow instructions

Poppets

Poppets can be used to invoke a particular deity’s energy, honor an ancestral spirit and spellwork. Here are two tutorials that show a couple of ways to make your own poppet:

Ancestor Shrines

Honoring your beloved dead with an altar does not have to be elaborate. Here are two tutorials on making mini shrines:

There is a stillness that has descended upon me as 2012 unfolds.

I have no interest in the chatter of social media, making plans or finding the words for blog posts.

Instead I am allowing myself to drift in wordless space.

Beneath it all I hear a low hum

A rhythm that rises to whisper

Create Beauty

Create Beauty in all you do

Create beauty has become my mantra,

my prayer and my intention.

I create beauty

When my and my beloved’s bodies meet;

In the pages of my art journal; and

In moments of feeling complete connection with the cosmos.

Create Beauty above all else

sings to me of divine creative energy,

of ease prevailing over struggle, and

of keeping it simple.

And so it is that I create beauty in all I do.

My mantra for now.

What is your mantra?

Did you see Crafting the Sacred’s brand spanking new header?

↑ Look up ↑

Having a new header has been on my back burner to-do list ever since my website redesign last June. I had fashioned my previous header with my rather basic photoshop skills and wanted to clean it up at some point.

So I was absolutely thrilled when I won a holiday giveaway of graphic design services from the lovely Jennifer Puckett. Such a generous giveaway!

Jennifer was an absolute pleasure to work with in – ensuring that her design reflected my taste preferences and needs. All I knew was that I wanted a simple, elegant header that incorporated elements of my original watercolour, which makes up the current colour palette of the site. She created several designs for me to consider and, after a few tweaks, we found the right look for Crafting the Sacred.

I truly love the elegant, clean design that now graces my site. Thank you Jennifer putting my vision into pixel!

Happy New Year! I am so ready to be greet 2012 with my arms open wide with 2011 behind me.

I have been pondering releasing the old year and welcoming the new year over the past few weeks. So much so that I designed a special Solstice reading offering which included a personalized releasing ritual. Holding space for my clients’ personal releasing work was eye-opening.

Even after all these years as an intuitive reader, I am amazed at the beautiful synchronicity of my work. Over and over again as I drew cards and meditated on what each person needed to let go, I saw patterns in my own personal healing journey.

What became apparent is that we are each releasing old scripts, beliefs and self-talk that no longer serve us. We are stripping ourselves bare as we stand on the threshold of a powerful new dawn.

Releasing 2011

As we glance back on the year that was, we often get caught up in what went wrong, what intentions we did not fulfill, mistakes made and missed opportunities.

A few weeks ago I came across an alternative year-end closure exercise on Scoutie Girl that radically reframed my take on 2011. It is simple enough – list all the things you accomplished or created - no matter how big and small — an I Did in 2011 list.

I know it may sound unbalanced to only focus on what did work and not mention what did not. However, I for one, need to be nudged towards recognizing the good times or else I am very much a glass half-filled kinda gal.

I highly recommend making an I Did in 2011 list to say goodbye to 2011. By completing my personal I Did List, I shifted my perspective of 2011 from being the Year of Limbo to the Year of Creative Expression.

I cannot express to you enough how powerful and liberating this new perspective has been to me. Now that I have reframed and released 2011, I feel ready to enter 2012 with more clarity.

Receiving 2012

I gave up on setting resolutions years ago as they began to feel like rules and I like to buck rules – even those I set myself! Instead I prefer to set simple and clear intentions for my vision for the coming year.

Just a few months ago my friend Sara of Soul Spackle made me aware of Christine Kane’s Word of the Year discovery tool. This entails picking one word to encompass your vision and hope for the year ahead. It serves to ground and focus you in your intention. I love how simple and concise this makes your intention setting.

For 2012 I have chosen RECEIVE to be my word of the year as I continue to work on drawing receptive energy into my life, most notably in my pregnancy journey.

I am wanting to move away from feeling compelled to take action to manifest my dreams and move towards being receptive to goodness that comes my way – to let go of struggle and welcome in ease. Receive also encompasses implicit openness, trust and faith.

One of the ways I will exploring my word of the year is through Book of Days with Effy Wild, a free year long art journal project with lessons and community support.

I am super-psyched to have this daily creativity project to ground my spiritual and healing journey. I may mention my Book of Days journal from time to time here, but mostly I will sharing pictures and creative process musings on my art blog, jo creates.

What are you doing to release 2011 and receive 2012?

I am following Eleanor Mayrhofer’s suggestion (as seen on Scoutie Girl) of making a list of all I did in 2011 – highlighting everything I’ve created instead of focusing on what is lacking in my life.

So here’s what I did in 2011 (in no particular order):

I made collages of all 22 major arcana cards from the tarot. Someday I will showcase them all as a blog post – in the meanwhile here’s my World card:

I designed myself new super-cute chakra themed business cards.

I completely overhauled the web design of Crafting the Sacred – all by myself! Check out my post New Energy, New Look on how it felt to let go the professional design I paid for in favor of one I created myself.

I dipped my toes into the wonders of Photoshop thanks to my dear friend and cappuccino buddy Sam.

I used my own watercolor artwork as a starting point to design this site’s header!

My husband Azi and I made a (almost) daily habit of taking a long walk around our neighborhood.

I began to blog more regularly and find my voice as a writer. My very favorite posts from this year are Losing my Religion, Finding my Sacred Truth; How to Love Working for Yourself; Creativity in the Fallow Season; and Radical Authenticity.

I wrote a fangirl e-mail to one of my blog crushes, Magpie Girl, asking her to guest post and she said yes!

I wrote and released my first three ebooks of intuitive wisdom – the Pocketful series.

My business coaching work picked up and I’m so proud of my clients’ achievements – one launched her new business website; and another transitioned from etsy seller to opening her own brick-and-mortar store.

I picked up art journaling, which has stoked my creative fires to no end (Thank you Effy for inspiring me and making it possible!)

I’m using my art journal to chronicle my path towards pregnancy and finding it so very healing to express myself beyond words. Turns out my pages are often humorous prayers for conception:

I helped my friend Kristina revamp her Devi Doula website and am now luring her into the wonders of art journaling!

I did a fair amount of guest posting, including how I started Crafting the Sacred; how creativity inspires my coaching work; and practicing self-forgiveness.

I cheekily created my own Certificate of Authenticity to describe myself as if I was a priceless work of art.

My husband Azi graduated with Cum Laude for his degree in Mathematics. Ok, I admit that should be on his “I Did” list and not mine, but I just had to share his success!

In April Katrina Dreamer and I ran a workshop on using creativity and divination to understand the messages of your dream world, which we aptly named Divine Dreaming.

I paid all my bills on time despite Azi being out of work since August.

I did some tough processing with friends about expectations and support – it led to one friendship breakup and at least two friendship breakthroughs. A humbling and heart-opening process that has made my close friendships so much richer.

I got fancy with photoshop and created a new freebie: printable Peace~Love~Joy buntings.

I continued my annual tradition of knitting a winter scarf for my friend Aurora – this makes it 4 years in a row!

I interviewed 13 everyday people who have found and are making a living from their passions for my Soul Work series.

I am super-proud of the variety and quality of the guest posts I gathered for October’s Ancestral Threads series to honor those who have gone before.

My Guide to Making Chakra Art is included in 30 Days of Goddess, an e-course available through the Goddess Circle. Here’s my creation for my throat chakra in all its peacock glory:

Azi and I saw my favorite South African band Freshlyground, live in San Francisco – such a treat!

I’ve been working with a powerful shamanic healer to release energetic blockages.

I made a few lovely friendships with like-minded souls through on-line communities (Carrie, Fran, Michelle and Sara, I’m looking at you!)

The TV shows that hooked me this year were Homeland, Game of Thrones and Treme — I’m all for well-written dramas with socio-economic awareness and political intrigue.

And my “I Did” list keeps growing…but I will stop for now

I hope your 2011 was as full of new beginnings, heart-filled connections and creativity as mine was!

I’m taking a break from blogging over the next few weeks and will return return refreshed in the New Year. Wishing you and yours a rested and joyful festive season.

In the Soul Work Series I chat with everyday people who have found and are living their passions.

Today I talk with my friend and writer Sara Thibault of the soul-stirring blog, Soul Spackle. Sara is currently offering the free series, 31 Days of Soul Medicine, to help you end your year in alignment.

What does the term Soul Work mean to you?
Soul Work is the thing that naturally flows through you, the thing that cannot be stopped. It is expressing that natural impulse within, which honors the self and honors the world.

What is your Soul Work?
My own personal Soul Work is what I’ve just recently come to call Cultivating Beauty. To express what this means to me I have to give some definition of beauty, one that isn’t narrowly defined by simply something or someone that the eye finds attractive. Beauty is soul-deep, it resonates with authenticity and truth. To me, truth is always the most beautiful thing in the room, and my work is to honor that wherever it shows up. I do my Soul Work primarily through the written word, and as a reader I want your bones to rattle in recognition of the truths spoken there. But I also enjoy art journaling, collage, dance, graphic design, photography and even curating treasuries of beautiful things on Etsy, and I feel my Soul Work carries over there.

What brings you the most joy in your Soul Work?
Making connections — both within the work itself, such as finding a pattern that keeps repeating; and also with those who experience my work. Being a Truth Warrior has made me see the world and my fellow soul travelers differently. Knowing that we all share similar struggles and yet so many overcome the obstacles to bring their Truth to the world makes me so glad to be a part of it all, even when it hurts, even when its hard. The world is full of courageous beauty when people show up to participate fully in it.

What challenges you?
My biggest challenge is getting so absorbed in someone else’s work and having to step back and realize my contribution is valid, too. I have to remember that my work has its own fingerprint regardless of how it dances among the constellations of another’s work. Another challenge is the constant evolution of what is Truth and what is Beauty. Neither is fixed, so my work means I am constantly chasing them down in an attempt to capture them where they are. Since I grow and change in response to my own writing, its meaning is always shifting.

How do you feel when you do your Soul Work?
Very present, but not necessarily present in the physical space I see around me right now. Rather I am present in an interior landscape that has always felt like home to me.

How does your spirituality impact your Soul Work and vice verse?
My spiritual beliefs are, in many ways, why I do what I do. I am passionate about expressing my belief that all of our lives are valuable and that we are here for a reason. I know what it’s like to live soul-starved, and I don’t want anyone to experience that needlessly. Nothing is required to live a soulful life but your willingness to do so. You don’t need to have a certain amount of money in the bank or look a certain way. Your life can be outrageously messy and it’s all still perfect. The more I pour these ideas into my work, the more deeply I come to accept myself and all my wounded places, all my difficult thought patterns.. that is the work of my spiritual practice. My work is my practice and my practice is my work.

What is your most precious dream for your Soul Work?
To be able to devote myself full time, in a self-sustaining way, to chasing down Truth and Beauty! I would love to have my message reach a bigger audience, but I surrender completely to All That Is that my work will shine its light in all the dark corners that are calling for it. In that sense I can’t judge size, numbers or scope because the Universe knows who needs what I offer, and will have me go where I’m needed. Quality versus quantity.

What advice do you have for someone looking to follow their passion?
Be willing to listen to the voice inside you, even if it leads you in unexpected directions and no matter how crazy it may seem. Be grateful for every small nudge from the universe or word of encouragement that you encounter along the way; nothing waters the seeds of your intention like gratitude. When you get scared, imagine how insanely awesome you’ll feel once you’ve done the thing that scares you. That achievement is yours to celebrate no matter whether you do the thing well or not.

Any last words?
Do not be discouraged by whatever seems to be “wrong” in your life right now, this moment, for these very things may well contain the gifts that will launch you into the stratosphere! Judge less, trust more.

And thank you, Jo!

‘Tis the season for cheer but are you feeling cheerful?

The holiday season can fill us with anxiety with its triggers for our most common sources of stress: money, food, family and social interactions…sometimes all in one sitting!

What would it be like if you could experience with holidays with more grace and less stress?

In my experience it is all about being present and mindful as you navigate the turbulent waters of your emotional triggers.

Honor your experience

Acknowledging your feelings is the first step to letting them go. The more you fight the feeling, the more agitated you will become. By simply saying to yourself, “I am feeling anxious”, you are letting your tender self know that it is being heard. Be present to all that comes up. Allow yourself to be where you are.

Breathing

It sounds simple but remember to breathe. When you feel anxious or amped up, take a few deep breathes, letting your inhales fill your belly. Be sure to take longer exhales than inhales as this calms the mind.

Treat your body well

Get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, and avoid foods known to increase stress levels, such as caffeine, sugar and simple carbs. Channel your nervous energy through your body by exercising regularly. Not only will you get out of your head, you will also benefit from the release of stress-relieving endorphins.

Healing touch

Locate where in your body your feelings of anxiety are situated, e.g racing heart or queasy tummy. Place your hands over that body part and breathe in your own healing energy. Don’t forget to hug and snuggle with your sweetie, friends, kids or pets on a regular basis.

Connect with nature

Take a walk around the block. During your walk, slow your pace and try to notice every organic things you come across: fallen leaves, puddles, critters and birds, clouds, and even other people. Paying close attention to nature reminds us that we are part of an infinite universe and that our racing mind is just one a small part of it all – a humbling but grounding reminder.

Celebrate you

You did amazing things this year! Do you remember? Write a list of at least 10 things you did during 2011 that you are proud of, no matter how personal or seemingly insignificant they feel. Share at least one of your highlights with a trusted friend and make a toast to your success in 2011.

How will you treat yourself well this holiday season?

I am so excited about the Peace, Love and Joy mini buntings I made as a holiday gift for you, my dear readers. You can download them for free by clicking on the link above.

I made the Peace~Love~Joy buntings thanks to a template from Amanda Oak of Kind Over Matter’s awesome How to Create Your Own Printables kit. Amanda’s instructional videos made this a breeze with tips on how to use my own art work as the background pattern.

So I decided to create my own special holiday art work to serve as the background – with greens, reds and gold accents. I was able to create the layered effect using mixed media techniques I have been learning in Mixed Media Boot Camp, a wonderful on-line class with Effy Wild and Jeanette House of Wild Precious Studio. If you are wanting to spark your sacred creativity, I highly recommend this (and all) their offerings!

Once I had the art work backgrounds complete, I scanned them as image files to use in Photoshop as a defined pattern.

The next step was finding a font with a vintage holiday feel and voilá, Peace, Love and Joy reigned the land…well my hearth land for a start!

Please download your own set of Peace~Love~Joy buntings (see download button at the top of this post), print them out and hang them up for the holidays. Please let me know how you used them and send photos if you can!

Here’s to more PEACE, LOVE and JOY across the globe.

Guest post by Rachelle Mee-Chapman of Magpie Girl for Sacred Connections.

So often we are told that we must add a layer of activity onto our daily living in order to access the sacred.

If only we would go to church, or mosque, or temple…
If only we could do yoga every day…
If only we could develop a really consistent 5am meditation practice…
If only we could climb a mountain in Tibet..
…and chant with 90 year old monks
…while eating only vegan food from hand crafted bowls whilst wearing free-trade organic clothing.

If only we could do one (or all!) of these things, well, then the sacred would be truly near.

It is true that all of these noble efforts help people become aware of the sacred. I myself have found comfort and connection in a couple of them over the years. Yet the older I get, the more I’ve come to appreciate the simple-sacred that appears in our every day.

Most of my favorite moments of Everyday Sacred come while cooking. During the holiday season our cooking-from-scratch quotient here in the U.S. skyrockets. Cookies and fudge. Wild rice stuffing and cranberries with orange zest. Cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning. All of these traditions give us an excellent opportunity for experiencing the sacred in our everyday.

I spend a lot of time at the kitchen counter all year long. On most days I’m just flying through the motions– getting the pasta on the table, or the carrot sticks into the lunchboxes. Everything is so routine that I don’t notice the sacred underpinning it all.

But my cooking takes on a different tone during the busy holiday season. I’m not cooking the usual fare, so it snaps me out of the monotony. And I need grounding practices during the hustle and bustle, so I use the time in the kitchen to anchor me.

During the holidays, I set an intention to be mindful of the food I am preparing. As I scrub the yams, or smell the spices from the chai on the stove, I try to pay attention to the emotions that arise with those actions. As I prepare the minestrone soup our family has on Christmas Eve, I’m grateful for the workers who picked the tomatoes, and for the genius who thought up gluten-free penne. While I make any number of my mother-in-law’s famous cookie recipes, I pause to feel the warm swell that comes from being part of a loving heritage. The scent of anise and cloves rising up like incense as I stir the thick dough for pfefferneuse helps me connect to abundance as I feel the bounty of both my spice cupboard, and my heritage. And as I make the dinner rolls, my prayer for each guest gets kneaded into the dough. The sacred revealed in chopping and mashing, flour and yeast, cinnamon and cloves.

Perhaps this holiday season – and throughout the year – you might find a moment of peace while stirring the oatmeal. Perhaps you might offer a prayer of thanksgiving over the onions. Perhaps you might be surprised by joy as your children laugh over a sink full of sudsy dishes.

My blessing for you today friends is this;

May you find spirit in the spice drawer.

May enlightenment come to you in the steady scoop of teaspoons.

And may you find the sacred in the kneading.

Amen? Amen.

Much Warmth,

Rachelle Mee-Chapman

What about you? Where have you encountered the sacred in the kitchen? How might you bring mindfulness to the divine moments that are held in the breaking of the bread?
