I know that candy corn can be a very polarizing Halloween candy - you either love it or you hate it. For me, I actually do enjoy candy corn. I always get one bag for Halloween and I'll try to use it for photo props, but usually end up snacking on the less than perfect ones. It's kinda waxy, tastes a little like honey and definitely sweet. Out of all of the Halloween candy, this one screams Halloween.

Meet Cady the Candy Corn: A Beginner-Friendly Felt Pattern

Cady the Candy Corn is a pretty simple felt design, which makes it great for beginners. There are a total of 8 felt pieces and assembly includes a simple appliqué stitch for applying the pieces with a whipstitch to sew it all up. There are two french knots to make the highlights for the eyes and a simple stitched mouth. What You’ll Need: Materials and Tools

For the materials, it's as simple as going to your local craft store to get craft felt, embroidery floss and stuffing. You can give your candy corn a premium look with wool felt, which is available online and sometimes at your local fabric store.

Customize Your Candy Corn Colors

While the pattern give you the colors to make a standard candy corn, you change up the colors to make your favorite candy corn variant, like the harvest corn or other seasonal candy corn colors. Pattern Transfer Tips: Getting Your Pieces Ready

When it comes to cleanly cutting out your pattern pieces, we recommend precision or micro-tip scissors. They're smaller and great for even small and intricate felt pieces. Ready to cut out your pieces? you'll want to cut the smaller pieces as you work so they don't get lost. You can use a variety of option to attach your pattern pieces to felt, including paper, paper labels and printable washable stabilizer. Check out our guide on How to Transfer Patterns to Felt for Sewing for details.

Preparing Your Felt Pieces

For crafting your candy corn, you'll begin by printing out the pattern and using your chosen method to transfer your pattern pieces on to felt. If the pieces have a dotted line around them, wait until the step they're need in to cut them out completely. Pattern pieces have the color of the felt on them so you can easily match the piece to the correct color.

Sewing the Base Layers

Cut out the candy corn front and back from orange felt (or color of your choice) and the bottom from yellow (or the accent color of your choice). To position the pieces, we've provided lines in the pattern so you can trim off the bottom and top part from the felt if you've used paper or sticky label - leave the printable washable stabilizer in place - you'll rinse that out when you're finished. Position the bottom piece (you can use a little craft glue a little off the edges to secure this piece). Remove the paper or label from the bottom piece and cut an 18-inch (45 cm) piece of embroidery floss in yellow and separate a strand.

For threading and securing your floss, check out our guides on How to Thread a Needle and How to Secure the First and Last Stitch in Felt Sewing. Thread your needle, secure and stitch the top part of the candy corn bottom that overlaps the orange felt (you'll stitch the outside on the last step). Do this for both sides. Using the same methods as above, cut out the top pieces from white felt. Cut an 18 inch (45 cm) piece of white embroidery floss and use one (1) strand to sew the tops to the front and back, again only on the overlap.

Adding the Eyes and Mouth Details

Now it's time to add some character! Cut the eyes out of cocoa brown felt and position as shown (you can trim the paper or label around the eyes to position). Appliqué them to the candy corn front with one strand of cocoa brown felt. After that, you'll use three (3) strands of white embroidery floss to stitch a french knot for the highlight and a straight stitch for the smaller reflection on each eye. Use three (3) strands of cocoa brown embroidery floss and follow the diagram to stitch the mouth.

Assembling and Stuffing Your Candy Corn

Finish the candy corn by placing the candy corn front to the candy corn back and whipstitching starting at the bottom and use matching colors, changing colors to match the outside layer. You can trim the lower colors away or push them towards the inside if desired. Start stuffing when you're about 2 inches (5 cm) from your starting location. Stuff until your candy corn is plump but still fairly squishy. Continue sewing, adding more stuff if needed and secure the end of your floss tightly. And there you go, a sweet Halloween treat!

Before You Begin:

Reduce paper waste by printing only pattern pieces.

Felt Craft Playground Guard

Finished Size: Approximately 3 inches (7.62cm) tall.

Felt & Embroidery Floss (6-strand): Shocking Pink, Black, White

Other Supplies: Embroidery needle, scissors, stuffing, double-sided clear tape (Optional; Use on back of pattern to secure to felt), glue (Optional; Use to secure pieces before stitching.)

Before you begin...

Cut pieces only as needed. Separate and use one (1) strand of matching embroidery floss to attach pieces unless otherwise specified.

Applique/Whipstitch
Begin by bringing the thread up around the edge of the felt (1) and back down through (2). Repeat as needed. Space stitches about 1/8 inch apart and make about 1/8 inch long.

Straight Stitch
You'll use one (1) strand from the embroidery floss. Bring your thread up through 1 and down through 2. Repeat as needed to complete the stitches.

French Knot
You'll use three (3) strands from the embroidery floss. Bring your thread up through the felt as shown. Wrap the thread around the needle twice, hold tight and bring needle through the felt as close to the middle as possible.

A pumpkin for my daughter

Sometimes (actually, many times) I have to do non-CraftyAlien style projects. This week is my daughter's preschool pumpkin display. For about a week, there has been this pumpkin sitting on our kitchen floor (it's big and I don't have a lot of counter space.) being plain and orange and rather intimidating. The rules of the display are that it cannot be carved (most likely so that zombie pumpkins don't take over the school with the smell of the undead).

The entire previous week from the first hour the pumpkin was in the house was "Mommy, you need to paint the pumpkin."

No ideas, nope, nada. A two-hour search of Pinterest revealed nothing that screamed "preschool," but lots of other distractions like the brownie-in-a-mug.

I turned to my daughter for assistance and got "Dorothy." She's going to be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

Um, okay. Still not feeling it.

Sunday morning and I'm calling my parents for ideas. They're not picking up any of the phones. Panic ensues.

I go to the convenience store around the corner to look at coloring books for ideas... Sponge Bob, Dora... Angry Bird? No, still not feeling it, although I amuse myself on the way home with names like Sponge Pumpkin Square Bob.

A last minute search of my daughter's toy room reveals a book with a cover filled with pumpkin-shaped heads. It's Lalaloopsy!!! I can make a Lalaloopsy. Wait, I can make a Dorothy Lalaloopsy!

Off to the craft store to get some paint. Oh, dear. What to do about the curls? Hmm... yarn... no... pipe cleaners!

I grabbed a jumbo pack of brown pipe cleaners and it's back to the pumpkin.

Now, I had to work out the curls before I made the pumpkin. They had to be to the same scale, but one little pipe cleaner only covered about an inch of curls, so I twisted the ends together and used six pipe cleaners (about 2 and a half yards long) and twisted them around a broken broom stick (I KNEW that would come in handy for something).

Hmmm... it's not enough. Right length, not enough fullness. I made another set of six and retwisted the original with the new ones into a curl and this time, I was happy.

So I painted and painted, and waited, then painted some more. Threw on a bit of varnish because some of the paint ended up shiny and then made some Dorothy bows, opened up two paper clips into a large U and slipped the bow on, three curls (bent at the end to hold on) and jabbed them into the pumpkin.

Done! Yay. And it was only 10:30 pm. Normally, for me, these last minute things take me into the wee hours.

Mythbusters Plush...

A while ago, I had someone ask me if I could make some custom plush. And then my mind just went overboard. If I could have any plush, what would a self-professed nerd like myself want? MYTHBUSTERS!!! And STAR WARS and STAR TREK and BREAKING BAD and DOCTOR WHO and... and... and...

So I designed and made Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters!! They're both about 10 inches tall and made from fleece and felt. I'm going to set up a contest where you can enter to win them, but right now, I'm just showing them off. They'll be with me at local events but won't be for sale. I'll post a link here later on, along with some other crafty Mythbusters inspired projects.

Now I'm off to blow something up.

Finished Size: Under 4" (10.1cm) tall, depending on yarn used and amount of felting.
Yarn: Use only 100% wool, worsted weight. Do not use a “superwash” wool as this will not felt. Bleached white yarns do not felt and many off-white yarns may not felt well. Test a sample knit swatch of white yarn before using. Yardages are approximate:

BLACK, under 1 skein.
GOLD, under 1 skein.

Needles: Straight needles, size 10 US (6mm).
Other Supplies:

Felt: black.
Embroidery floss: black, white.
Yarn or tapestry needle; embroidery needle.
Stuffing.
Small amount of waste non-wool yarn to temporarily secure seams.

Stitches & Abbreviations:
M1: (Make one): Insert left needle, from front to back, under the horizontal strand between the stitch on the left needle and the stitch just worked, forming a loop on the left needle. Knit this loop through the back when working a knit row, purl through front when working a purl row.

Cast on 10 stitches in BLACK. Bind off. Join ends and stitch to secure in a circle. Handles will be attached after felting.

Next Step: Work in all yarn ends on wrong side. Check your knitting for any holes and stitch them together loosely. All pieces will be felted unattached.

Felting: In a small container or dishpan, fill with about an inch of hot water. Add a small amount of dish soap. Place tooth into water and let soak for about five minutes. This will open up the wool fibers for felting. Vigorously squish each piece. Repeat process until individual knitted stitches are not visible. If the pieces get too sudsy, rinse to check your progess. Some colors may felt faster than others!

Shaping: Stuff Pot firmly with temporary stuffing while damp and mold into shape (SeeDIAGRAM 1). Shape Coins into small circles, Handles into loops and Gold into a bowl. When you are happy with the shape, let dry overnight.

Stuffing: When completely dry, remove temporary stuffing completely. Fill bottom of Potwith 1 oz plastic pellets. Using matching yarn or embroidery floss, attach Gold to top ofPot as shown in DIAGRAM 1 while stuffing firmly.

Attaching Parts: Using pattern pieces, cut out two eyes from black felt. Separate one strand from black embroidery floss and attach eyes with applique stitch as shown inDIAGRAM 2. Using three strands of embroidery floss, back stitch mouth as shown. Using three strands of white embroidery floss, make a french knot and straight stitch for each eye.

Here's a pattern you can sink your teeth into!

Finished Size: Approximately 4" (10.1cm) tall, depending on yarn used and amount of felting.
Yarn: Use only 100% wool, worsted weight. Do not use a “superwash” wool as this will not felt. Bleached white yarns do not felt and many off-white yarns may not felt well. Test a sample knit swatch of white yarn before using. Yardages are approximate:

Fold each root in half widthwise and whipstitch seam with matching yarn as shown in DIAGRAM 1. With tooth inside out, whipstitch back seam with matching yarn, leaving a 1-1/2 inch (3.8cm) opening. Fold tooth flat as shown in DIAGRAM 1 and whipstitch top seam closed.

Next Step: Work in all yarn ends on wrong side. Check your knitting for any holes and stitch them together loosely. With colorfast NON-WOOL yarn, baste the opening closed on back.

Shaping: Remove cotton yarn from opening at back of tooth and stuff cavity and roots firmly with temporary stuffing while damp and mold into shape (See DIAGRAM 1). When you are happy with the shape, let dry overnight.

Stuffing: When completely dry, remove temporary stuffing completely. Fill with dry stuffing firmly. Using matching yarn or embroidery floss, stitch opening together as invisibly as possible.

Attaching Parts: Using pattern pieces, cut out two eyes from black felt. Separate one strand from black embroidery floss and attach eyes with applique stitch as shown inDIAGRAM 1. Felting: In a small container or dishpan, fill with about an inch of hot water. Add a small amount of dish soap. Place body and parts into water and let soak for about five minutes. This will open up the wool fibers for felting. Vigorously squish each piece. Repeat process until individual knitted stitches are not visible. If the pieces get too sudsy, rinse to check your progess. Some colors may felt faster than others!

Shaping: Shape Bed Bottom and Cushion into circle, Bed Wall into long rectangle as shown (See DIAGRAM 1). When you are happy with the shape, let dry overnight.

Attaching Parts: Attach Bed Wall to Bed Bottom with matching yarn or embroidery floss as indicated in DIAGRAM 1. Place cushion in bed, fasten if desired.

Felted Knit Daffodil Amigurumi

Well, here's our first free pattern of this year, and for Spring! This was a bit of a hope that the pattern would work, since a daffodil is a considerably complex design. The flower tips forward, causing two issues I think I resolved nicely - I couldn't put the eyes in the same location as our tulip, and the weight of the flower meant that the stem would have to shaped to center gravity a bit differently than other patterns and keep the flower from falling forward. This has been a major issue with our as of yet unreleased Backyard Critters 8 Snake design. The change was a success and will be incorporated into the snake design so that we can release him into the world too!

Bind off. Weave in ends. Repeat from * 3 times. With flower inside out, whipstitch seam from Row 1 through Row 15 of Cup Base and Row 1 through Row 3 of Cup Lip with matching yarn, leaving an opening.

Starting on wrong side, center of petals, Cast on 7 stitches in COLOR A.
Row 1 & All Odd Rows: Purl.

Row 6: Bind off 1 sts. Divide into 3 groups of 8 stitches. *K8. (8 sts)

Cut yarn leaving an 8" (20cm) tail. Using a tapestry needle, insert the needle through remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in ends. Leaves will be attached after felting.

Next Step: Work in all yarn ends on wrong side. Check your knitting for any holes and stitch them together loosely. With colorfast NON-WOOL yarn, baste the opening closed on back.

Felting: In a small container or dishpan, fill with about an inch of hot water. Add a small amount of dish soap. Place body and parts into water and let soak for about five minutes. This will open up the wool fibers for felting. Vigorously squish each piece. Repeat process until individual knitted stitches are not visible. If the pieces get too sudsy, rinse to check your progess. Some colors may felt faster than others!

Shaping: Remove cotton yarn from opening at back of cup and stuff firmly with temporary stuffing while damp and mold into shape. Shape petals into points. Stuff Stem firmly and shape into a “foot” (See DIAGRAM 1). When you are happy with the shape, let dry overnight.

Stuffing: When completely dry, remove stuffing completely. Fill stem loosely with poly pellets. Stuff flower and stem firmly. Using matching yarn or embroidery floss, stitch flower opening together as invisibly as possible.

Attaching Parts: Attach parts with matching yarn or embroidery floss as indicated. Attach petals one at a time and rotated as shown in DIAGRAM 1. Attach cup to petals and stem. Thread yarn through bottom to back of stem, pull to create a small indent at base and repeat if necessary until Daffodil stands. Attach leaves as shown in DIAGRAM 1 . Using pattern pieces, cut out two eyes from black felt. Separate one strand from black embroidery floss and attach eyes with applique stitch as shown in DIAGRAM 1. Using three strands of embroidery floss, back stitch mouth as shown. Using three strands of white embroidery floss, make a french knot and straight stitch for each eye.

In my searching for ideas for my daughter's 3rd birthday, I came across a few websites with amazing cookies. The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle is one of those sites. Be warned, once you go there, you'll be sucked in for at least an hour. Her cookies are THAT amazing. And the best part is that she has tutorials to show you how to to do it AND recipes for the perfect sugar cookie and icing. I may just start randomly making cookies! I'll post MY attempts at cookies in the future.... lol.

Christmas Wreath (Crochet)

Finished Size: Approximately 3” (11.4cm) diameter.
Crochet Hook: Size E-4 US (3.5mm).
Yarn: Acrylic worsted weight. Yardages are approximate:
• Color A (Green) 12yd (11.0m);
• Color B (Red) 6yd (8.2m);
Other Supplies:
• Felt: black.
• Embroidery floss: black, white.
• Yarn or tapestry needle; embroidery needle.
• Stuffing.

Stitches & Abbreviations:
CH: Chain.
INVDEC: Invisible decrease: Insert the hook through the front loop of st and then through the front loop of the next st. Yarn over and pull yarn through both front loops. Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.
MR: Make ring: Make a loop by putting the yarn tail behind the yarn from the skein. Leave a 4" (10cm) tail. Using the hook, pull the working yarn through the loop, leaving a loop now on the hook.
RND: Round.
SC: Single crochet.

Wreath
Wreath is worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join rnds. You may wish to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of a rnd.

Starting at center of wreath with E-4/3.5mm hook and COLOR A, ch 18, join with a slip stitch in first ch to make ring.
Rnd 1: Sc in each sc around. (18 sts)
Rnd 2: Increase 6 sts evenly. (24 sts)
Rnd 3: Increase 6 sts evenly. (30 sts)
Rnd 4: Increase 6 sts evenly. (36 sts)
Rnds 5-7: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 8: Invdec 6 sc evenly spaced. (30 sts)
Rnd 9: Invdec 6 sc evenly spaced. (24 sts)
Rnd 10: Invdec 6 sc evenly spaced. (18 sts)
Cut yarn leaving 8"/20cm tail. Using a tapestry needle, stuff firmly while whipstitching Rnd 1 to Rnd 10. Weave in end.

Bow

Bow is worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join rnds. You may wish to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of a rnd.

Starting at end of bow with E-4/3.5mm hook and COLOR B, mr.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 sc in ring, pull starting ring closed. (12 sts)

Rnd 2: Increase 12 sts evenly. (24 sts)

Lo Mein Cupcakes from What's New, Cupcake?" by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson

I was meandering in the local Sam's Club recently when a book caught my eye. A cupcake book. But not your ordinary cupcake book. No, this one was especially taylored for a crafty nut like myself. Pages and pages of cupcakes pretending to not be cupcakes. Now, those are the kind that are close to my heart. Running out of time and without a membership pass (I snuck in for a berry sundae!) I typed the book's name on my phone and off to get my daughter I went.

The dilemma started the next day when I had time to go to the local Michael's and peruse the books for my newly chosen favoritest cupcake book in the world. My book (Hello, Cupcake, What's New?) was not one book, but TWO books (Hello, Cupcake and What's New, Cupcake?). Woah. The Sam's Club version was half of one book and half of another. Decisions had to be made. One book was more than enough for a mommy of a toddler (at least for a month or two) I finally settled on the book with the lo mein cupcakes. I think it was the broccoli. Go figure, I'm not really a fan of broccoli, but this time it won my heart.

Fold in half and stitch vertical seam (we recommend using mattress stitch)**. Stuff candy corn firmly. Sew bottom seam (We used grafting stitch). Weave in ends. To make a standing candy corn, make an indent at the bottom of the candy corn by drawing a loop of yarn through the bottom center and pulling up through the middle of the candy corn and securing.

Next Step: Using pattern pieces, cut out two eyes from black felt. Separate one strand from black embroidery floss and attach eyes with applique stitch as shown in the photo above. Using three strands of embroidery floss, back stitch mouth as shown. Using three strands of white embroidery floss, make a french knot and straight stitch for each eye.

* If you'd like to felt your candy corn, use size 10 US (6mm) needles and 100% wool (non-superwash) yarn. Increase yardages by approximately 20%.
** If felting your candy corn, leave a small opening in your back seam for turning after felting. In a small container or dishpan, fill with about an inch of hot water. Add a small amount of dish soap. Place candy corn into water and let soak for about five minutes. This will open up the wool fibers for felting. Vigorously squish each piece. I want this bed!

About a week and a half ago I was searching the internet for ideas (maybe plans) on how to make a tufted storage ottoman. I didn't find what I wanted. But I found SO MUCH MORE. I love Pottery Barn stuff, I really do. However, those price tags give me indigestion. I like Ikea stuff. Some of it is close to what I want, but not really it. A scratch on particle board makes it look like junk, but a scratch on wood gives a piece of furniture character. You really can't do much with Ikea stuff if your nearly 16-month-old bangs her toys on it and scratches the finish. But with wood, well, distressed is in. Plus it's fun to work with power tools.

Yes, I'm gonna make my furniture myself. After all, my secret little dream is to live in a house I built myself with everything inside made by me. That's what Ana White basically has done. Plus, she's got this great website (Knock-Off Wood) with free plans to make all the furniture I want. And she simplifies the construction so that anyone can do it.

Now I just need a personal lumber yard.
