This Is Literally You...Easy To Manipulate, But You Are Free, Right?

I know this commercial has been out a while.

I think it’s been out over a year, actually.

It doesn’t get that much play, though, but I love it.

I’m a guy who is a student, practitioner, and consultant when it comes to marketing, advertising, and sales and I can say that whoever came up with this is sthuper thmart.

I can remember the first time I saw this spot I loved it.

It is well-done and if anyone knows who the artist is singing the song, or what the name of the song it,
I would love to know so I could go get it.

It’s obviously French, which may or may not matter to some people.

It reminds me of another novelty French song called “Ca Plane Pour Moui”.

You would probably recognize it if you heard it, but I have that one already.

I want the one from this Absolut commercial.

If you notice, the director does a very specific job of making sure to not show any one of the “rioters” getting smacked with pillows by the police.

There may be one shot of that happening, but it is fast and you can’t really tell if it is a riot cop or not.

The deeps seeds of this commercial are obviously rooted in concern over the growing police
state worldwide and it does a great job of parodying the increased consciousness about it.

It does a good job of subtlety communicating the will of the people peacefully, which is the antithesis
of what the “global guardians” really want out of us in regards to a ramped-up martial society.

Sure, I may be digging-in too far to what is really only a Vodka drink commercial,
but the people behind this ad are smart, and they are marketing more than just Absolut here.

Which reminds me of my “absolute” avbersion to vodka.

I remember it was Senior beach week, 1994.

This was actually my first series of occasions drinking alcohol and being
out and about with people my own age, completely drunk and untethered.

I’m not even sure how I remember this, but I know if involved downing an entire beer bong funnel of straight vodka, followed-up by another entire beer bong funnel full of half vodka and half Hawaiian Punch.

I want to reiterate that I was already hammer-time, at this point.

Shortly after the 2 funnels were down, a huge pillow fight broke out.

I’m just kdding.

Shortly after, though, I remmeber pulling the fire alarm to an underground garage with a
restaurant packed to the hilt directly above, right on the seaside boardwalk in Ocean City.

All hell broke loose and a drunk run ensued.

I don’t remember much more of that night other than being left
out on the sand on my back for a while, near uncoinsciousiness.

I remember that I peed all over myself quite prolifically because I couldn’t get my zipper
down and manage to roll over on my side in the sand, so I just peed…and peed…and peed.

It smelled like I fell in a popcorn stand.

OK, I made that part up.

I also remember my friends coming out on the sand to get me once they had seen that I was flat on my back.

I think that they tried to prop me up on one of those boxes where
they keep the beach chairs, but vodka beer bongs are powerful.

I think they managed to get me back to the boardwalk near a bench and I think
a couple cops actually approached everyone, but they somehow managed to convince
the police that I was fine and that they could get me home OK, which they did.

They somehow managed to get me to my car and drive me home to where about 30 of us were statying.

I puked red Hawaiin punch all over the inside of my white car.

The white car that was packed full of as many people as it could fit.

I think they got contact drunk because there is no way any of
them managed to not drink any of my explosive vodka puke.

They left me on the balcony the rest of the night until the morning.

I think one of my friends tried to stuff some bread in my mouth while I was sleeping, because I woke
up with dried bread all around my mouth and down my shirt, like I had been a foaming mutant.

I remember coming in-and-out while out on the balcony that night and I remmeber seeing what I summed-up to be the white light of death because I was Triple A-1 FUCKED-UP !

It is safe to say I had a hangover the size of a fat girl
that morning and was pretty much immobile for a while.

I learned a pretty valuable, and enduring, drinking lesson that day.

There were still more drinking lessons to come for me at that point, but I still have a
distaste for vodka, even though I haven’t had even a drop of alcohol in 4 and a half years.

If I were to even smell a little vodka I would feel queasy.

I can get my drink-on still with some nice, cold, Hawaiian Punch, though.

I think it’s my vodka aversion that let me analyze the Absolut commercial more deeply.

Most folks probably are ready to get their buzz after that commercial and maybe I should be, too.

But I won’t and don’t and that’s another story that I may end up telling
some other time as a result of my over-analysis of some other commercial.

My Vodka Beer Bong Funnel Hangover.

Look…I want to believe, just like Mulder (Nerd Alert).

But anything can be faked these days.

Even if some truly compelling, groundbreaking, revolutionary video was actually captured,
people would still, to a certain degree, say it is fake.

I mean, this may be actual video proof of cows being abducted by…something.

How will we ever really know for sure?

If there’s always going to be some segment of the public saying it is fake,
will anything ever be definite again?

This video may be 100% illegitimate, which may be it’s initial purpose,
but even if it is, the silver lining, at minimum, at least for me, is that
it raises some very critical questions needing answering.

I was fooled.

I knew I was supposed to be looking, listening, and waiting for something, but I didn’t know what.

This was a fun distraction for me, so I decided to post it.

There’s another video made by the same people involving basketball
players that I think you should watch, too.

Money Where My Mouf Is.

Gold. People either love it or hate it. There aren’t many who feel ambivalent toward it. Unfortunately, gold is deeply misun­derstood by investors, and that misunderstanding is hurting their portfolio returns. Many in the in­vestment community trot out the old myths about gold: that it is a bad investment; that it is very risky; that it is not a good inflation hedge. But is there anything behind these assertions? If investors take the time to examine the facts, these commonly held beliefs simply do not stand up to scrutiny. It is precisely because these myths have become so prevalent that gold is still undervalued. Once the general public realizes these beliefs are not valid, the price of gold will be much higher.

Myth 1:

Gold Is A Bad Investment

A frequently cited argument is that since it peaked at $850 per ounce (all amounts in U.S. dollars unless otherwise noted) in 1980, gold’s return has been poor compared to the major stock indices. However, that peak price was a short-lived, single-day aberration. Investors who avoided the mania phase and purchased gold one year earlier in 1979 at its average price of $306 per ounce also avoided any significant losses during the subsequent bear market. The performance of different asset classes varies from cycle to cycle. The previous cycle from 1968 to 1980 saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average remain flat with significant volatility, while gold increased by 2,300 percent. In the current cycle, which began in 2002, gold has posted a compounded return of 14 percent, while 15 of the 30 Dow components are negative.

Many studies compare gold to equities over peri­ods as far back as the 1700s. But these studies ignore the fact that gold’s price was fixed until 1971. Prior to that time, gold was money and not an investment. Interestingly, virtually none of the stocks listed in the 1700s still exist today. Instead, the returns of major indices such as the Dow are boosted by the removal of bankrupt companies and poor performers, which are replaced by high performers. Three of the 30 companies that made up the Dow in 2000 have since been replaced.

From a strategic portfolio allocation viewpoint it is easy to see why Ibbotson Associates, one of the world’s most highly regarded asset allocation specialists, determined that holding between 7.1 percent and 15.7 percent in precious metals bullion reduces portfolio volatility and improves returns.

Myth 2:

Gold Is Not A Good Inflation Hedge

The arguments against gold as an inflation hedge are usually based on calculations arising from the intra-day price spike in 1980. While gold did not keep up to inflation using daily prices from 1980 to 2002, the annual average gold price has kept up extremely well since 1971, when the price was no longer fixed, Figure 1. During the same timeframe, the U.S. dollar lost about 80 percent of its purchasing power. In fact, all the world’s major currencies have depreciated by significant amounts due to continuous excessive increases in the money supply. The impact of this devaluation on real returns is significant.

Gold had increased in purchasing power since 1971.

Conversely, gold has not only maintained its purchasing power but increased it against all major currencies. It will continue to do so as long as the world’s central banks keep increasing the money supply by a greater percentage than their country’s GDP growth.

More importantly, gold maintains its purchasing power not only during inflationary periods, but also during deflationary periods. An extensive study, published by Roy Jastram, analyzed the purchasing power of gold in England and the U.S. from 1560 to 1976. Jastram concluded that gold held its value remarkably well over time. The purchasing power of gold and precious metals actually increases during deflationary periods because other assets decline in price by a much greater amount than precious metals do.

As central banks continue to accelerate the pace at which money is printed, inflation will increase, and the purchasing power of paper currencies will decline. This will result in more and more astute investors fleeing to the safety of gold. As a con­sequence, gold’s price should rise far in excess of the Consumer Price Index and the true inflation rate. In order to protect portfolios from rising inflation, Wainwright Economics concluded that an all-bond portfolio would need an 18 percent all­ocation to gold, silver and platinum, while an all-equity portfolio would need 40 percent just to stay ahead of inflation.

Myth 3:

Gold Is A Risky Investment

Risk means different things to different investors. A pension fund may perceive risk as a failure to meet its liabilities, whereas an asset manager may view risk as a failure to meet its benchmark. Most investors, however, associate risk with a loss of their capital or underperformance of their invest­ments in comparison to their expectations. “Risk comes from not knowing what you are doing,” according to Warren Buffett.

There are many kinds of risk: currency risk, default risk, market risk, inflation risk, systemic risk, political risk, interest rate risk and liquidity risk. While all of these apply to financial assets, many do not apply to gold bullion. Physical bullion is not subject to default risk, liquidity risk, political risk, inflation risk or interest rate risk. In the rare cir­cumstance of strong currencies, gold may be sub­ject to short-term currency risk and, at times, to market risk. Unlike financial assets, however, gold bullion cannot decline to zero. Gold is the only asset that can protect wealth from non-diversifiable systemic risk.

Precious metals provide high returns at low risk

Volatility or standard deviation are often used as measures of risk, and gold is considered to be quite volatile. However, when annual compounded returns are plotted against standard deviation, the individual Dow stocks are all more volatile than gold, and all but two of the Dow stocks had poorer performance than gold, silver, and platinum over the past eight years. Figure 2.

Returns are important, but even more important is to compare risk-adjusted returns. Clearly, an investment that has higher volatility may still be attractive if the returns are appropriately higher. Nobel prize-winning economist William Sharpe devised the most commonly used measure of risk-adjusted performance: the Sharpe Ratio. This ratio measures the amount of excess return per unit of volatility. The interpretation of the Sharpe Ratio is straightforward: the higher the ratio the better.

Bullion is unlikely to suffer underperformance risk in the near future. Demand for gold, silver and platinum is increasing for both commodity and monetary attributes, while annual mine production is declining. As the price of oil continues to rise due to production declines and increased demand, inflation will accelerate. As central banks increase money supply at accelerating rates, the purchasing power of currencies will continue to decline. As these two major trends interact with each other, the price of gold will continue to rise.

Myth 4:

Gold Does Not Pay Dividends or Interest

The Bank of England used this argument to justify selling half the country’s gold holdings at the bot­tom of the market in 1998. It wanted a “safe” investment, one that would generate interest, and it chose U.S. treasury bills. The gold was sold for under $300 per ounce. In the months following that sale, the price of gold tripled, and the value of the U.S. dollar lost 30 percent against the British pound. The currency exchange losses plus the opportunity cost resulted in billions of pounds in losses, significantly offsetting any interest income the Bank might have received.

The same is true for bond investors. In an infla­tionary environment, the “real” or inflation-ad­justed interest rate they receive is often negative. Gold, like any other asset that sits in a vault, will not earn interest or dividends, but neither is it at risk. No asset class generates income unless you give up possession and take the risk of not getting it back. However, gold’s capital appreciation is many times greater than the prevailing interest yields, while not being subject to any of the risks that interest-bearing investments are subject to. Myth 5:

Gold Is An Archaic Relic

A comparison of bullion to the larger producers shows gold has outperformed mining stocks since March 2007

Gold is often referred to as an archaic relic with no monetary role in today’s modern digital society. Several facts contradict this view. The world’s central banks still hold 29,000 tonnes of gold in their reserves. Gold, silver and platinum trade on the currency desks – not the commodity desks – of the banks and brokerage houses. The turnover rate of physical gold bullion, between the nine members of the London Bullion Marketing Association, currently averages $24 billion per day. Trading volume is estimated at seven to ten times that amount. Clearly, gold is still trading in its tra­ditional role as an alternative currency.

Myth 6:

Mining Stocks Are Better Investments Than Bullion

While mining stocks can generate impressive returns during an uptrend in precious metals prices, they do not always outperform bullion. It is unfair to compare junior mining companies to bullion because of the huge disparity in risk. While successful junior miners can generate impressive returns, over 90 percent of precious metals discov­eries never become productive mines. A better comparison would be the larger producers. While mining stocks have outperformed bullion during the early stages of this bull market, gold bullion has outperformed the major mining indexes since March 2007. Figure 3.

Mining stocks tend to be significantly more volatile and risky than bullion, and during sharp market declines they tend to follow the broad equity markets downwards – even if the price of the metal is rising. During the late stages of the bull market of the 1970’s, mining stocks underperformed bullion. In order to adequately compensate inves­tors for the higher risk, mining stocks would have to outperform bullion.

Conclusion

Investors who take the time to carefully evaluate the benefits of bullion will realize that these com­monly held myths do not hold up to scrutiny. Those investors stand to reap significant rewards. Investors who believe these myths are missing out on the opportunity to add an asset class that diver­sifies portfolios, protects against inflation, and may provide better returns than traditional assets, such as stocks and bonds.

Under a worst-case scenario of systemic risk, bullion may be the only asset that holds its value. As these myths are dispelled and the price of bullion rises, as many mainstream analysts predict, informed investors will benefit from purchasing bullion at today’s undervalued prices.

When the public at large becomes fully educated with respect to precious metals, it will bid up the price. Considering that global financial assets are estimated at over $180 trillion, while total global above-ground gold is only $4 trillion (and above-ground bullion is less than $1.5 trillion), a massive wealth transfer event is likely to occur. It is inter­esting to note that even a 10 percent switch from financial assets to gold would result in a 450 percent to 1,200 percent increase in the gold price.

Lovers of the English language might enjoy this. It is yet another example of why people learning English have trouble with the language. Learning the nuances of English makes it a difficult language. (But then, that’s probably true of many languages.)

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is’UP.’ It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It’s easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.

At other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this up is confusing:

A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UPabout UP !

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takesUP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on & on, but I’ll wrap it UP , for now. My time is UP.

I really do feel for folks trying to learn a-eng-a-rish.

I can almost understand the unwillingness of the hispanic community migrating north to learn the language.

They, perhaps understandably, stick to small communicaties of native language speakers so they largely don’t have to.

This language is not easy, even for tard rednecks like me who grew-up “learning” it.

I have a good freind who lives in Taiwan (who is pretty pretty, I will add) who speaks pretty good English, but struggles.

She tries, though.

She studies a lot, she takes classes, she practices with me, friends, and family that live in the U.S., etc.

I give her Credit for that and I can hear her frustraton with things just like what is demonstrated in the article above.

Syntax must be hard as hell to learn from scratch.

For example, my Spanish is always inproving, but I get hung-up on stuff involving conjugating verbs, the tenses, and sybtax.

I guess it’s part of the learning curve and it always serves to provide some enjoyable times for the native speaker hearing the practioner try to speak cogently.

For example, my friend from Taiwan (who is pretty pretty, I will additionally add) once told me that I needed to hold on for a moment while she went to clean-up of the toilet of her cat.

I understood exactly what she meant, as I’m sure you do, but it just sounded so funny.

She is good on curse words, though.

And who isn’t, really?

Dirty talk is globally understood and learning those words always seems to be the Holy Grail of any language.

Maybe we should adopt nassy talk into the citizenship test and see more people get legalized.

Across the channel from England you have the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner warning the press that he believes Israel will strike Iran before they can develope nuclear weapons completley ignoring the fact that the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammed ElBradei, said that Iran lacks the key components to produce an atomic weapon.

“The devastation that could be wreaked by one major nuclear weapons incident alone puts 9/11 and almost everything else [in] to the category of the insignificant,” Rudd said.

Why are there so many high level politicians around the world in a seemingly coordinated effort warning of huge threats and developing crisis’ that may include a nuclear device? Are they preparing the masses for an event or series of events that have been in the making for some time? Is the public being prepared for new and forming enemies with a potential to plunge the entire world into war?

The bottled water industry promotes an image of purity, but comprehensive testing by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals a surprising array of chemical contaminants in every bottled water brand analyzed, including toxic byproducts of chlorination in Walmart’s Sam’s Choice and Giant Supermarket’s Acadia brands, at levels no different than routinely found in tap water. Several Sam’s Choice samples purchased in California exceeded legal limits for bottled water contaminants in that state. Cancer-causing contaminants in bottled water purchased in 5 states (North Carolina, California, Virginia, Delaware and Maryland) and the District of Columbia substantially exceeded the voluntary standards established by the bottled water industry.

Unlike tap water, where consumers are provided with test results every year, the bottled water industry does not disclose the results of any contaminant testing that it conducts. Instead, the industry hides behind the claim that bottled water is held to the same safety standards as tap water. But with promotional campaigns saturated with images of mountain springs, and prices 1,900 times the price of tap water, consumers are clearly led to believe that they are buying a product that has been purified to a level beyond the water that comes out of the garden hose.

To the contrary, our tests strongly indicate that the purity of bottled water cannot be trusted. Given the industry’s refusal to make available data to support their claims of superiority, consumer confidence in the purity of bottled water is simply not justified.

Laboratory tests conducted for EWG at one of the country’s leading water quality laboratories found that 10 popular brands of bottled water, purchased from grocery stores and other retailers in 9 states and the District of Columbia, contained 38 chemical pollutants altogether, with an average of 8 contaminants in each brand. More than one-third of the chemicals found are not regulated in bottled water. In the Sam’s Choice and Acadia brands levels of some chemicals exceeded legal limits in California as well as industry-sponsored voluntary safety standards. Four brands were also contaminated with bacteria.

Walmart and Giant Brands No Different than Tap Water

Two of 10 brands tested, Walmart’s and Giant’s store brands, bore the chemical signature of standard municipal water treatment — a cocktail of chlorine disinfection byproducts, and for Giant water, even fluoride. In other words, this bottled water was chemically indistinguishable from tap water. The only striking difference: the price tag….

Please read the full article linked at the top of this story. I drink so much of the bargain basement Giant brand that I’m sick reading about how much junk it has in it.

I really shouldn’t be surprised, though, because I have always wondered how and why Giant could sell nearly a gallon of bottled Acadia brand water for $1.

Why, it’s because they want feces, detergent, and poison to be affordable for EV-eryone!

Spread it around. Drink up. Who is thirsty?

This stuff, that I have downed just gallons and gallons of, isn’t on sale for $1…it is pre-printed on all of the labels that you can get 10 bottles for $10 - $1 each.

This is gross and since I read this article I have been boiling my water even though I have about 10 fresh bottles sitting in the back of my truck.

All of this time I might as well have been drinking out of the hose or the terlit.

Nature has it better than civilised humnanity in many ways, now including potable water without fertilizer in it.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall in the meeting when it was decided to allow this junk to be in our bottled water.

Why not just start a whole new marketing plan including the new slogan “Now With Poop!”?

Seriously, people should be aware of this in a more conscious way.

But, over time, with research, and a desire to know I began to get clearer about an esoteric agenda we all unknowingly are a part of.
