We are constantly told that links are the route to good rankings, as long as the links are relevant and maintained.

Your website is probably changing almost every day to keep up with your SEO efforts. You try this, tweek that, remove something or other and in the end, your initial tests on your website are no longer valid. The last thing you need now is irrelevant keywords and broken links.

With this in mind, I have been spending the past few weeks developing some online tools for you to quickly test your links (onpage and reciprocal) and keywords. These tests include;

Link Extractor: Evaluates the links (internal and external) on your web page, including the attributes (href, onclick, rel and target), anchor text/HTML and status (i.e. are they still active).

Reciprocal Link Checker: You been told that a link to your website is on a certain page? Well, how good is that link? In other words;

can your link be followed? (nofollow)

does your link have any events attached to it? (onclick)

does the link reference your website directly or does it follow an internal path

is the reciprocal page full of links and no textual value?

is the reciprocal page linked to from the home page of the website?

does the page have a theme similar to your website (keywords)

Keyword Analyser: You have setup your webpage, written your content and then added your META keywords. This tool allows you to compare your keywords against the content of your web page.

All the tools are currently free, so use them and let me know what you think.

Regards,
Craig

PS: This website is still undergoing development so more tools will be added as time goes by. If you can think of any other relevant tests that you would like to have available, let me know and I will see if I can get them online.

Generally, the content of this email starts something like, "Dear Webmaster, I'm the webmaster of http://.... We came accross your website, http://www.craigs-directory.com/ and feel that it would fit perfectly with our website..."

Generally, I reply with "Thanks for the link exchange offer. Please feel free to submit your website to my web directory at http://submit.craigs-directory.com/cd/submitLink.asp. After submission, you will be given a reciprocal link specific to your website which will allow it to earn credits for each click..."

Nine times out of ten I get a response similar to; "We do not want our link in a web directory"?

I have a few questions,

The name of my website is "Craigs Directory", implying that my name... (wait for it)... is Craig and not webmaster - this leads me to believe that the message was generated by a service

The second part of my websites name is "Directory", there is a clue there as to what it is.

What's wrong with web directories? Google has one (http://www.google.com/dirhp) and so does Yahoo (http://dir.yahoo.com/) so there must be some value in viewing websites by category?

If you are going to be trying to email webmasters for link a link exchange, at least have a look at the website you want a reciprocal link from - you might learn something.

30 Days, 60 days, 6 months and 1 year after submission I send out update emails which let the user know the rank of their website. If the email bounces back to me, I set a "noshow" flag against the users website(s) which disables them in Craigs Directory (please see Where's My Website).

I have broken the results down into groups of 10,000 website listings. I'll let the graphs do the talking (basically, the red bit is the percentage that have bounced).

Due to the number of bounces to date, I have decided on the following plan of action;

If an email bounces back to me due to an invalid account, then I update all the website listings using that email account with a "noshow" flag. The result is that;

The website is not show when browsing by category

The website is not show on the top 25 or latest links pages (if applicable)

The website is not shown in the Top 9 of the home page or Category pages (if applicable)

The website can only be found in the RSS feeds and by doing a search for keywords that match the website.

In some cases, the same email address has been used by SEO companies or they have provided a temporary email (on their domain) to clients - leading to hundreds of websites no longer being listed.

If the email bounces back due to a typo or something recoverable, then I will try to correct the issue and not set the "noshow" flag.

So, apologies if you suddenly find that your website is no longer listed in Craigs Directory. Please check your website (do a search for your website, i.e. yourdomain.com), let me know, and I will remove the "noshow" flag.

Regards,
These credits are earned through clicks or purchases.

When a website is submitted to my web directory, I send the user an email thanking them for their submission. Once their website is approved, I send them another email informing them. So far so good. After that, I send the user update emails 30 days, 60 days, 180 days and 1 year after submission to keep them informed about the rank of their website (there is an opt-out link).

Obviously, there are a few emails which bounce back telling me the account does not exist, but the longer the period from submission to email, the worse this situation becomes. When is comes to the 1 year emails, I am finding that about 1/3 of the emails are bouncing back!

I have a few questions:

Do people change their email addresses annually?

Do people use temporary emails when submitting to web directories?

If the email address is no longer valid, is the website?

I have a webbot which checks all websites in my web directory and removes those that no longer exist. This check basically ensures that the website submitted to the web directory is still available, and if not, removes it from the index. No point linking to websites that no longer exist?

So far, of the ±39,000 websites checked, over 2,000 websites have been removed!

I find this trend quite worrying. People get these great ideas (or are sold lemons) and setup a website using free ISP's, blogs, wordpress, etc. They give it a few months and then give up, letting the website die.

Keep trying, be persistent, it will work.

Regards,
Craig

It started as a simple web directory that ranked websites by credits. I admit I am a "techie" person and originally built it as a challenge and maybe because I was a little bored. However, its success has taught me quite a bit over the last 18 months, some good lessons and some bad.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not a one-time deal, it is ongoing. You need to keep at it, keep tweaking and keep promoting.

Google PageRank

This is probably only important to me because most people who submit their websites to Craigs Directory are keen to increase their own Google Ranking. However, I believe PageRank is always a few months out-of-date (in the Google toolbar) and Google wants us to focus more on ROI and not on visible pagerank.

That being said, Google penalized me in October 2010 for not adhereing to their strict guidelines - by removing my visible pagerank. My search results have not changed, so I know that Google has not removed me from their indexes, but I have noticed a 25% drop in daily submissions (±200 down to ±150 per day).

I have now corrected the reason for my penalty and hope to have my visible pagerank restored, but I am not too concerned as it has not effected me too much. BTW, Google still crawls about 2,500 pages of Craigs Directory per day.

Email

Email is still a good communication tool. Through Craigs Directory I send out numerouos emails, the purpose being to keep people up to date on the rank of their website. Unfortunately, there have been times where I have had to send out emails to let people know that their website has been declined for not adhering to my submission guidelines (basically no sex, drugs or hacking content). Suffice to say, there are some people out there who take things far too personally, enough said.

Whether it be through rejection or just plain malice, there have been attempts to damage Craigs Directory or is reputation. Over the last 18 months I have had to deal with really offensive emails, hacking attempts and even having my email being black-listed by Yahoo (that battle is still ongoing).

I have learnt a lot over the last 18 months, but mostly I have learned about people. SEO is all about ranking in the search engines, but we tend to forget that it is "people" that type in the search query.

Regards,
Craig

I finally managed to complete this task this morning for all the historic submissions. Going forward, this will become a daily task as more websites boost their rank in Craigs Directory.

The complete (and hopefully growing) list of these websites is this;

If you want your website listed here, submit it to Craigs Directory and select 2000 or more credits in the "Instant" listing option.

Regards,
Surprisingly, quite a few of the websites no longer exist, or the page being linked to has been removed?

Any guesses how long it would take me to check over 56 thousand web page manually? My broadband provider would love me, but sadly, my wife wouldn't.
I therefore developed a small webbot to do the checking for me. After checking a website it writes the response status codes (200, 404, etc) into the database. All I have to do now is review all the negative response codes and remove the defunct websites from my listings.

So, if you find your website no longer exists in Craigs Directory, apologies, but please check the page I was linking to - it may no longer exist. To date it has only seen about 37 thousand visitors, but then again, it is very niche. I have developed a few other websites, but none have proved to be as succesful as Craigs Directory. Life's a funny thing, I spent 18 months developing a website that I was sure would succeed - it bombed, but with Craigs Directory I only spent about a week with the original design (sure, I have tweaked it a lot since then). Sometimes its the simple things in life that work the best.

The concept of ranking websites by credits (earned through clicks or purchases) was there from the beginning, but I must be honest in saying I never expected it to work so well. To date, over 2.7 million credits have been issued - which is well above my expectations.

Over the last year and a bit, I have made a few changes and put a few things in place to reward websites with lots of credits. These include:

[±July 2009] Introduced the TOP 25 websites page

[±May 2010] Show the top 3 websites (i.e. the highest credits) on every page of the directory

[±May 2010] Show the top 9 websites on the home page

[±May 2010] Show the top 9 websites of each category on the sub-category selection page

[±June 2010] Developed a completely new web directory whos sole purpose is to list all websites in Craigs Directory that have earned credits by buying them.

[±August 2010] Developed a Mobile version of Craigs Directory - lists/ranks all approved websites

[±November 2010] Change the Add a Website to https (secure server)

[18 January 2011] Created a Twitter and Facebook account for Craigs Directory

[18 January 2011] Started updating the status of the Twitter, Facebook and my Google Buzz accounts with the urls of websites who purchase 2,000 or more credits ($10)

Regards,

Craig
