Unforgiving Minute chosen by Villanova for its "One Book Villanova Program"

Villanova University has chosen The Unforgiving Minute by Craig Mullaney for their annual "One Book Villanova Program" for this coming fall semester. The author will speak on campus. Villanova has one of the largest FYE programs in the nation and this is the third Penguin book chosen in the program's four year history. Previously, the school chose The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Riverhead) and Rooftops of Tehran by Mahbod Seraji (NAL). Like its predecessors, The Unforgiving Minute will enrich discussion on campus with its connections to current world events, engaging narrative and inspiring coming-of-age story.

New special on NPR's "To the Best of Our Knowledge" discussing Afghanistan:

Ahmed Rashid says that the U.S. rushed into Afghanistan but was never interested in the country’s real problems. Craig Mullaney led an infantry rifle platoon along the hostile border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. David Kilcullen feels that the problem with traditional counter-insurgency efforts is that they don’t protect local people. Robert Greenwald is the Director of the on-going, on-line documentary called “Rethink Afghanistan.”

I asked a team of friends with experience teaching and leading discussion groups to write this set of discussion questions to accompany the book. Additionally, there is a separate set of questions designed for military leaders written by a recently returned 82nd Airborne company commander to guide discussions among cadets, midshipmen, company-grade officers, and NCOs.

For those of you have read the book, I hope this gives you a way to get more out of the text and to share the experience with your friends, colleagues, or classrooms this summer and fall. There's also a sign-up page to request a telephone or video conference call with me and your group.

Serving in Afghanistan is, I think, for anyone a humbling experience. You are continually humbled by the geography, the complexity of the society, and the weight of history. Understanding in your bones how long a drive thirty miles is without a road. Feeling in your stomach eyes watching you from canyon rims. Seeing the mixture of sorrow and hope in a child's eyes and the disillusioned stare of an adolescent with no options. That stays with you and gives a texture and reality check that is valuable when sifting through dry memoranda and contemplating strategic options.
