Fashion Designer Craig Taylor made a personal appearance today at the Neiman Marcus store in Tampa. The designer was there to present his Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Craig Taylor is known for its tops, tunics, shirtdresses and accessories including bags, belts and scarves which come in a variety of fabrics, colors and silhouettes, available in women’s sizes XS to XL (sizes 2 – 14) and many styles are also available in plus-sizes.

The new Spring/Summer 2012 collection is very colorful with a lot of flower print shirts in beautiful fabrics that are made in Italy. The fabrics are very light, perfect for the hot summer months.

It should be so easy to find the perfect button-down shirt. All you're asking for is good fabric, a nice fit, seams that are pucker-free and buttons that don't fall off before you even get home from the store, right?

So why is it that if you're a woman, the shirt inevitably gaps at the bustline, and if you're a guy, the sleeves or neck never really fit just so? Then there are the issues of cleaning: When the shirt shrinks, those dreaded puckers pop up, the garment is a wrinkled mess after drying, and the color fades — or if white, yellows.

Clothing designers and manufacturers have thrown themselves at this issue, and we're happy to report that there have been improvements lately on a number of these fronts.

Props in the women's department go first and foremost to Rochelle Behrens, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbyist who turned her attention to matters of clothing after tiring of the dreaded bustline gap she had in her daily uniform of suits worn with button-down shirts. The product she introduced a year ago, The Shirt (the-shirt.com), has several hidden buttons on the placket that keep the blouse fastened, an invention both simple and ingenious. There are 10 buttons on her designs, compared with seven or eight on a normal woman's shirt. The Shirt became a big hit after being touted by Oprah Winfrey as a "must-have" for 2011, and retailers like Molly's of Denver are carrying the designs, which sell for about $95. "It's not the most expensive shirt we sell, but it's very popular because women like the fit," says store owner Molly Broeren.

Feb. 8 kicked off Fashion and Arts Week, an event designed to bring new life to the beautiful Cleveland Street District.

Strolling the sidewalk on that balmy evening, one could hear music wafting from every lighted doorway and relaxed conversation from every outdoor table.

A good first stop was the new studio of Craig Taylor (pictured right), whose world-famous shirts have been worn by Oprah and other notables. His designs hung from racks in colorful disarray, lining the brick walls and reflecting off the strings of lights in the windowsills. Visitors strolled throughout the small rooms, stopping to ask a question of the designer, whose breezy nature and ready smile made him as easy to approach as an old friend.

Stepping into the studio at System Productions for the night’s big event was exactly like stepping into any New York City studio, which seems to be owner and fashion photographer Troy Plota’s (pictured below) goal. A hodgepodge of art lined the dark gray walls, while red couches dotted the floor and lamps that looked like they might have had roots at IKEA glowed from every corner.

Guests were already spilling through the doors and gravitating toward the cash bar as a DJ played music videos on a large screen and caterers from Greektown Grill set up a tantalizing spread. One corner of the room was set aside for the modeling, with a stark white backdrop and large umbrella lights poised for photography of the models, which would be done by Plota himself that evening.

In a small room toward the back, gaggles of young pretty things got primped before their close-ups, and in another room, a video presentation of some of Plota’s best work played in a loop. Guests were free to experience it all.

The models began to filter out, all dressed in designs by Lending Luxury. The line provides the opportunity to rent designer gowns at a fraction of the cost. The girls took turns in the photography area, while Plota snapped their photos and called out directions. While they waited their turn, they chatted with the guests, who ranged from scruffy teenaged boys with wide eyes to elegant men and women in suits who pretended not to be impressed with the festivities. Photographers from all over pushed and ducked their way into a good angle for the best shots.

The overall event managed to be laid back and electric at the same time, making you feel as if you had been invited to the most exclusive party in town by a bunch of familiar friends.

It was certainly a success that set the scene for another spectacular Fashion and Arts Week.

Craig Taylor, fashion designer and Downtown Clearwater resident, will spearhead Fashion and Arts Week held in Downtown Clearwater February 3rd – 6th. The purpose of Fashion and Arts Week is to boost the Downtown Clearwater economy, and will be aided by Taylor’s past history of successfully helping revitalize distressed communities. The arts are critical to the success of a community, as evidenced by a recent USF study which found the City of St. Petersburg gains $25,527,058 in revenue each year from sponsoring art, and attracts just over 1 million visitors.

Taylor has had success in uplifting the following neighborhoods, having seen the best and worst of each:

South Beach, Miami – Taylor was involved with the Miami Beach Development Corporation in 1987 when South Beach was comprised of real estate with potential and senior citizens. Taylor, then an architect, helped renovate old hotels.
SoHo, New York City – In 1992, Taylor lived in and started his clothing company in the lower end of SoHo. Along with other likeminded artists, Taylor helped transform the industrial neighborhood into the trendy fashion and shopping area it is today.
Downtown Los Angeles – When Taylor first moved into his east of Broadway loft with wife Yul, they had to shoo homeless people away from their front door. Through the creative energy they put into their new home, and a fashionable coffee shop opening up directly downstairs, the neighborhood turned around. Now, five years later, Taylor's old block is dotted with restaurants, wine-bars and galleries.
Downtown Clearwater – Today Taylor is participating in the Downtown Clearwater Renaissance by helping organize Fashion and Arts Week, showcasing the Cleveland Street District. Taylor also spearheaded the inaugural Fashion Week, which drew people from Sarasota, Orlando and Miami.

According to Taylor, the formula to revitalizing an area is to take young, creative people, for example artists, and put them in places that have potential. Give them some cheap rent and a bucket of paint, and their creative energy will do the rest. All it takes is vision, and people who are willing.

While the landlord might not be collecting as much rent at first, in the long run it will help out the landlord, since the area will be worth more because they are renting to someone who will improve the area and make the building worth more.

Downtown Clearwater has all of the ingredients for success: wealthy and international communities, nice weather, a beautiful beach nearby with none of the hassle of the beach, and citizens such as Taylor dedicated to improvements. The City of Clearwater is following this formula by giving incentives to businesses who want to come to Downtown Clearwater. Already the incentives have shown to make a positive change. La Cachette, Green Organic Café and Wine Bar, Tony’s Pizza and Cassanova have all benefitted from the incentives and are revitalizing the district.

During Fashion and Arts Week, Taylor will be holding an informal Q&A on how to break into the fashion industry with refreshments served in addition to a sample sale in his Downtown Clearwater design studio. Showroom samples of his shirts, which normally sell up to $250 at stores like Neimen Marcus, will be on sale for $35 to $45.

Fashion and Arts week will include a by-invitation preview event at Water’s Edge, sample sales, a Thursday evening multi-media fashion experience at System Productions, a full-service production studio headed by internationally recognized fashion photographer Troy Plota, street performers, musicians, an open air art show and more. A film screening presented by the Sunscreen Film Festival on Friday, February 4th and a ballet presented by the Guilfoil Ballet Theatre on Saturday, February 5th will both be held at the Capitol Theatre. All activities will be free, excluding the ballet and the film screening.

Fashion and Arts Week is an extension of Clearwater Fashion Week, which was put on by the Clearwater Designer Co-Op with the idea of stimulating the Downtown Clearwater economy by offering a week long designer sample-sale, and fashion shows. Fashion and Arts Week will take place on Cleveland Street in Downtown Clearwater February 3rd – 6th.
