2012 Coachella Music Festival Lineup Revealed!

Coachella lineup 2012 - Radiohead, Dre, Snoop picked for Coachella, Question: What do British sound pioneers Radiohead, hip-hop icons Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, and blues-rock bad boys The Black Keys each have in common? Answer: They’re all headlining the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, going down April 13-15 and 20-22 in Indio, Calif.

The lineup for the 2012 Coachella Music Festival has been announced!

The Coachella lineup for 2012 was announced late yesterday, and as Larry David might say, it’s looking pretty… pretty… pretty good. The Black Keys, Radiohead and Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg top the three days, with M83, Bon Iver, Miike Snow, The Weeknd, Feist, St. Vincent, Beirut, Girl Talk, SBTRKT, tUnE-yArDs and about a billion more rounding out the lineup. Coachella 2012 even has its reunion comebacks.
But unlike Coachella 2011, when the taste for comebacks seemed to be for ’80s revivals like Duran Duran, this year’s reunions are decidedly ’90s-era: Mazzy Star, Pulp and most notably At the Drive-In.
This means is that the movement that began petitioning Coachella for a Phil Collins appearance last year after Duran Duran returned to the scene fell on deaf ears.

It was a tough year for Phil Collins: he announced that he was quitting music this spring because he thinks no one likes him anymore. He took it back publicly, but we all know he’s feeling under-appreciated. The spontaneous Phil Collins parade in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, last year was charming but it wasn’t exactly a large-scale cultural happening.
We’ll go to Coachella this year and we’ll like it—we’ll freak out to At the Drive-In and it will rule. But we’re not giving up hope—we’ve waited this long, we can wait another year: Phil Collins, Coachella ’13.

The festival’s lineup, which will span two full weekends this year, was posted on the official Coachella Festival Facebook page.

Headlining are The Black Keys, Radiohead, and a duel collaboration by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.

Also participating are Florence + the Machine, Bon Iver, and David Guetta, among others.

The festival is continuing its trend of having a diverse music selection. From electronic dance music (Swedish House Mafia, Girl Talk, DJ Shadow) to indie hits (Arctic Monkeys, Feist, Wild Flag), Coachella has it all. We can’t wait!

Coachella will take place April 13-15 and April 20-22 in California.

Illinois Road kill Law - State’s new road kill law, A Midwestern state has enacted a new law that eliminates at least one hurdle for folks who want to scoop up the various critters that meet their demise on local roadways.

It allows anyone with a "furbearer" license to harvest roadkill for fur and/or meat. In six years of trapping, one thing has become apparent to Cody Champ: His pursuit of animal pelts isn't cheap, costing him $100 a week just for gas. So, it's little wonder the Illinois man welcomed a recent state law that allows him to get a few freebies, even if he needs a shovel and good gloves.

Among the hundreds of Illinois laws that took effect last year, the so-called "roadkill bill" got little attention despite being perhaps the quirkiest of all — allowing anyone with an Illinois furbearer license to salvage pelts or even food from the unfortunate fauna that prove no match for steel-belted radials.

Republican Rep. Norine Hammond pushed the measure straight-faced at the behest of a retired state conservation officer who thought it was a waste to allow animals' pelts to rot along the roadsides. Hammond said it was an opportunity for some people to make a little money, and could benefit the state by letting citizens carry out the task once relegated to state highway crews.
Despite snickering from some lawmakers, the bill sailed through the General Assembly — twice, because lawmakers overrode a veto by Gov. Pat Quinn, who worried that motorists might suffer the same fate as the critters. One poke came from Rep. Lou Lang, a Chicago-area Democrat who asked what to do if a critter wasn't quite dead.

"Am I required to perform mouth-to-mouth on that dead skunk?" Lang demanded.
Joking aside, at least 14 states have laws related to roadkill, including those that let motorists' keep animals they hit, though some pertain only to deer or bears, according to an informal survey for The Associated Press by the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Idaho soon may join the list, after a three-year push by one legislator to allow roadside salvage of game animals. The state's fish and game agency, which once objected to the idea, is awaiting legislative review of a rule that would allow it "under some circumstances."
"You shouldn't let that stuff go to waste," said Rep. Richard Harwood, an Idaho Republican who said he took up the cause after a game warden threatened a neighbor with a $350 fine if he messed with a run-over bobcat near his home for a hide that could net $200. "To be able not to grab it was kind of stupid. Why let it go to waste?"

Since Illinois' law took effect in October, Champ, a 26-year-old who lives in Dix, about 80 miles east of St. Louis, has skinned a mink and three raccoons he found dead while driving for his job with an electrical supply company.

He hasn't sold them yet, but pelts from certain wild animals are fetching the highest prices in years, due to a strong demand in Russia, China and other countries where they are valued more for their warmth than as a fashion statement. A raccoon skin routinely gets about $9, red fox $14 and muskrat $6.50, with top dollar often twice that amount. In Illinois, furs — mostly raccoon and muskrat — brought in $1.2 million in 2010, up 95 percent from the previous year.
Even so, nobody stands to get rich off roadkill, Champ said, because animals favored by trappers — including coyotes, foxes, squirrels, opossums, raccoons, muskrats, beavers and mink — can't always be used for pelts when they meet their end on a roadway.
What's more, Champ said, the law simply legalizes what some people have been doing quietly for years.

"Is a game warden really gonna get onto you for getting a few dollars" without a license, Champ said.
The measure broadened the options under a state law that already let people collect deer killed by vehicles. The new law does stipulate that carcasses only may be salvaged if the animal is in season, to prevent people from poaching them the rest of the year and claiming they were roadkill. And people without the proper license are out of luck.
There's no way to know how many have taken advantage of the new law. The state issued 4,202 furbearer licenses during the last season — which ran from late 2010 through January 2011. That was 389 more than the year before. This year's numbers have not yet been released.
The state has offered some safety tips for those taking advantage of the law, including urging salvagers to wear gloves at all times and don protective glasses to avoid fluids splashing into eyes. Immediately washing hands and any fluid-stained clothing wouldn't be a bad idea, either.
Game meat must be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees to kill any bacteria, but partake of roadkill at your own peril.

"There are some species that are eaten, particularly raccoon," said Bob Bluett, an Illinois Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist. "But it depends on what shape it's in and how long it's been there. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

The plane was only minutes into the flight when the captain reportedly made a "panicked" call for aid. Both pilots were given oxygen masks to continue the flight. A British Airways passenger plane 20 minutes into a flight from Heathrow had to make an emergency landing after both pilots were taken ill.

The captain and first officer both reported feeling lightheaded as the plane climbed to around 20,000 feet on the flight from London to Glasgow.

According to the Daily Mail, the captain made a 'panicked' call to cabin crew on the PA system, asking for help from a senior member.

They were supplied with oxygen masks and made a request for an emergency return to Heathrow.

The Airbus A321 landed safely, but when paramedics arrived, both the pilots reported feeling like they were going to 'pass out'.

The Civil Aviation Authority was notified and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch are looking into why the pilots both became ill, reports the BBC.

A spokeswoman for BA confirmed the pilots had reported feeling 'unwell' and said the company's pilots were highly trained to deal with these kind of circumstances.

Shee added that they had 'followed normal procedure' by putting on oxygen masks, and that passenger safety was paramount.

Once the plane had returned to Heathrow, passengers were flown to Glasgow on a replacement service with a new flight crew.

Hayashi previously pleaded not guilty to a felony charge. A judge agreed to reduce the charge at the Friday hearing.
She was immediately sentenced to 3 years of probation and a small fine.

Ice cream vendor assaulted? An ice cream truck driver in Utah was assaulted by a woman carrying a spray bottle, police say. Andrea Chavez, 65, is charged with assault and other misdemeanors.

If you assume that selling ice cream with a pushcart in the Mission District is an easy job, then you are wrong.

The men behind the Mission’s ice cream carts said they need strong feet, patience, a friendly face, and a wary eye to watch for street crime. Oh, and they need sun.

“If there is a sun like today, we go,” said 62-year-old Ramiero Gutierrez as he waited on a recent Wednesday for customers on the corner of Mission and 23rd Streets.

Gutierrez, one of some 30 men working for Oakland’s El Michoacano ice cream supplier, began his day as he usually does at 10:15 a.m. in the supplier’s storehouse at 2342 International Boulevard, Oakland.

In the 2000-square-foot room, dozens of ice cream men moved ice cream bars from three big tanks to the little pushcarts they will walk behind in places like the Mission District and nearby Oakland and Richmond.

Twenty minutes later, Gutierrez and six other men were off to board a van for the Mission.

By 11:15 a.m., Gutierrez had pushed his cart from the Harrison Street drop-off point to 23rd Street, where he began his five-hour circuit.

The Mexican immigrant covers 23rd and 24th Streets, St. Peter’s Catholic School on Florida Street and Cesar Chavez Elementary School on Shotwell Street. But there’s no monopoly in ice cream, so he often shares some of his more lucrative spots with others.

On this particular Wednesday, business for Gutierrez was slow.

After two hours of selling between 23rd and 24th Streets, he had made only three sales.

“Let’s go to the school,” Gutierrez said, rolling his cart toward St. Peter’s Catholic School on Florida Street. Inside the cart, he stores ice cream bars with prices ranging from $1.25 for an eggnog ice cream bar made by Delicias de Michoacán to $2 for a Malt Cup Chocolate under the Blue Bunny brand produced by Wells Diary Inc. Gutierrez also sells Popsicle ice cream from the Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream Company.

When he stopped at the 24th Street BART station, he met two regulars, chatted with them in Spanish and sold them ice cream.

“They are my customers,” he explained, moving toward St. Peter’s.

When he arrived at about 1:50 p.m., however, one of his buddies was already there.

Later, another ice cream vendor arrived. The latter took the initiative to open the gate where students would exit.

As expected at 2:15 p.m., schoolboys and girls came out from their classes, but they passed right through the three ice cream men without buying a bar.

“Not good,” said Gutierrez, who made $600 a week or $2,400 a month working at a restaurant in the Mission District before being laid off a few years ago. Nowadays, he’s lucky to earn $20 a day or $120 a week. To economize, he moved from the Mission, where two friends shared a $750 a room, to Oakland, where he pays only $100 a month for a shared room.

But, he said, he loves the Mission and on Wednesday when it appeared he would find no customers at St. Peter’s, Gutierrez pushed his cart to Cesar Chavez Elementary School on Shotwell Street.

Standing in front of the school, he and his friend, who arrived later, were luckier.

“Ice cream…” a young girl shouted as she saw the pushcarts.

Both vendors sold to at least six children each.

One young girl wanted an ice cream, but she only had $1 in her hand–25 cents too little for the cheapest bar.

“This is for you,” Gutierrez said while handing the ice cream to the girl.

“Gracias,” she said.

In the background, other students begged their mothers to buy ice cream, but failed to convince them.

No matter, Gutierrez moved on to Mission and 23rd streets and ended the day at 24th and Mission Streets where he found four more buyers.

“It is good exercise walking in this area,” he said. “My feet are strong.”

He said that compared to other neighborhoods, the Mission District has been relatively safe for ice cream men.

“In other cities such as Richmond and Oakland, ice cream men feel not safe because they often get robbed,” he said.

Gutierrez said his worst experience in the Mission occurred a year ago when two cars crashed and broke his cart while he was parked on 23rd Street.

He said he avoided 16th and 18th Streets because both have a reputation among ice cream vendors as high-crime areas.

Still, it has been a slow business, said Gutierrez, who has been in the United States for 18 years and is unsure when he will go back to his home country.

At least, said Gutierrez, he has one son who lives in San Francisco. His other three sons and two daughters are back in Mexico.

At 4:15 p.m., he counted his sales—a total of $20 and half of that will to the ice cream supplier.

“Not a good day,” he said. “But it is OK. I did not spend much as I cook at home. Now I have to go home.”

Then he turned and walked down 24th Street, heading toward Harrison Street where a multipurpose van would deliver him back to Oakland.

“Tomorrow might be better. You never know.”

Some things haven't changed. It's still tough out there. There are still many people competing for few opportunities. But with the right tools, you can improve your search, broaden your networking opportunities and align yourself with a career that fits your skills.

Here are 10 tips for a successful job search in 2012:

1. Create a job search strategy. Employers hate receiving applications from candidates who are not qualified for positions. So it's time to stop using the shotgun approach to your job search. You're wasting your time, and you're wasting the recruiter's time. Carefully read job postings and determine whether you could do a majority of the tasks required if you started tomorrow. A recent CareerBuilder job forecast reported that employers are not finding qualified candidates for their open positions, so learn how to tailor your existing skills to a job's requirements and spend time preparing better résumés and cover letters instead of just blasting a generic one to every single posting.

2. Define your goals and your brand. It can be challenging to stop and ask yourself, "What do I really want out of a job?" Answers as simple as a paycheck or benefits may be a reality, but the fact is that you do want more out of your job than just cash. Your career needs to satisfy you in more ways than just your pocketbook. By defining what you want out of a job and what you offer up as a job seeker, you become better at applying for jobs that are aligned with your overall career goals. By taking the time to define your brand as a job seeker, you can figure out what your best selling points are and the most valuable skills you have to sell to an employer. Make sure your social media accounts are professional if used as part of your search. And if they aren't, keep them under lock and key, since more and more employers are screening applicants via social profiles.

3. Diversify your search. While employers still utilize sites like CareerBuilder, many are branching out in multiple ways to connect with job seekers. You should be readily available in each of those channels. Whether it's through social media or local networking events, utilize today's technology to further spread the message about your brand. Today's job search can be summed up in one word: hustle. The more you switch up your efforts, the more opportunities you'll come across and the more you place yourself ahead of the pack. Also, know your industry and what trends are happening. Manufacturing companies may still have you apply in-person, whereas digital advertising agencies may expect a much more elaborate electronic portfolio available via the Internet.

4. Evaluate your skills and add more. Perhaps your skills aren't up-to-date with most of the jobs you are seeing in the market, or perhaps they are a little rusty. Brush up on your underutilized skills with online courses or community classes. You could also consider going back to school. Government funding and other programs are available for out-of-work job seekers who want to enroll in training or continue their education to better position themselves in the current workforce.

5. Be unique. You already know that defining your brand can help set you apart from the competition. When an employer asks, "Why should I hire you?" you will already have a list of your best qualities. 6. Proactively listen. Searching for a job can be tedious, and you can get so focused that sometimes it's easy to forget to listen, research or monitor conversations. Pay attention to how employers are communicating about jobs via social media and through their websites and how you can speak to them in their own language. Connect with other job seekers or career experts, and see what methods you can adopt from their job search strategies. Join Twitter chats and online career fairs to connect with more employers and broaden your network. Just be sure that while you're out selling your brand, you take the time to listen to how others are finding success in their search.

7. Set goals. The overall goal may be either get a job or get a new one, but when you break that big goal down into smaller goals, you set yourself up for more success and less frustration. When you only look toward that big goal, it can be disheartening when it takes a long time to achieve it. Choose monthly goals like joining professional organizations or volunteering at a nonprofit that will allow you to flex and utilize your skills. When you are able to create a to-do list and hold yourself accountable for achieving these goals, you'll feel better about yourself. That self-initiation can be shown off in your job search and interviews as a great example of your character. By forcing yourself to focus on small goals, you continue networking with new individuals that can assist you in your job search.

8. Prepare for anything. You can't always predict when you may get called for an in-person or phone interview, so you should always be ready. You should go into an interview with at least five examples that demonstrate your best qualities. When they want examples of real-life successes or things you'd do different, have them prepared. If you volunteered or taught yourself a new set of skills, be sure to mention this. Rehearse for interviews with mentors or friends so you won't 'wing it,' which can diminish your chances of portraying yourself in the best way. Leave the interviewer with phone numbers of references who will back you up with recommendations.

9. Positive thinking can lead to positive results. Use your career search as a time to see every situation as a learning opportunity. Of course every job hunt will have moments of frustration and hopelessness. But don't give up on yourself or on the belief that the right job is out there. Use the time to re-evaluate your career path, which could lead you to a more fulfilling career. A positive attitude is also contagious, and the more positive you are, the more likely others will be willing to go out of their way to help you.

10. Stay balanced. Job searching can take a lot out of you. Create a schedule or routine for yourself, so you don't burn out. Make sure you get plenty of rest, talk to friends and family, stay active and allow yourself those moments to do things you enjoy. Take the time to play a video game, go for a jog or play with your pets -- do whatever it takes to get you back to you.

Finding the perfect job is attainable, but you have to put in the work and effort and have faith that you'll reach your destination. By being proactive, connecting with others and having a can-do attitude, you'll be able to tackle some of the biggest job search hurdles in 2012.

Patrons at the 5A Division II State High School Championship football game in Texas witnessed the unexpected Saturday night when a golf cart got loose and ran over a group of people near midfield. A worker stopped the cart before it did more damage.

Ray Rice was preparing to face the Cleveland Browns last Sunday when he received a text message from Vonta Leach, his teammate on the Baltimore Ravens.

Leach was concerned about Rice's position on the NFL list of rushing leaders. Seeing Rice in 14th place was unacceptable, so Leach, a fullback, attempted to do something about it.

"He sent me a text before the game and it showed all the guys' rushing numbers," Rice said. "His text was, 'C'mon now, we've got to have a big one this week. Look where you're at.'"

Leach, who led Arian Foster to the NFL rushing title with Houston last season, said, "It was kind of motivation for him and myself."

The ploy produced the desired result. Rice ran for a career-high 204 yards in Baltimore's 24-10 victory to climb into seventh place on the rushing list with 926 yards, 111 behind leader Maurice Jones-Drew of Jacksonville.

Now in his fourth pro season, the 5-foot-8 Rice is Baltimore's biggest offensive star. He leads the Ravens (9-3) with 11 touchdowns and ranks second in the NFL with 1,473 total yards from scrimmage (14 yards behind Chicago's Matt Forte).

Quarterback Joe Flacco has done a fine job this year, but Rice is the key to the Baltimore offense. After the Ravens beat San Francisco 16-6 on Thanksgiving night, linebacker Terrell Suggs outlined Baltimore's best course of action for winning in December.

"As long as we always keep the game plan in our grasp and do what we do best, play Ravens football, feed every defense a lot of Rice, I think we've got a good chance of making a good run at this thing," Suggs said.

Suggs reiterated his stance this week as Baltimore prepared to face the winless Indianapolis Colts.

"The thing is, you want your best players with the ball," Suggs said. "When Ray is getting the ball, good things happen for us. I am not a coach, I am not an offensive coordinator, but I know what wins."

Since coming to the Ravens as a second-round pick out of Rutgers in 2008, Rice has developed into a dual threat. Sometimes he runs the ball, sometimes he catches it. Either way, opposing defenses have their hands full trying to account for him.

"He's been tremendous," Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. "To say he's an integral part of what they do is an understatement."

Rice broke into the NFL the same time John Harbaugh became Baltimore's head coach. Harbaugh always respected Rice's talent on the field, but over the years he's noticed the running back taking a commanding role in the locker room.

"He's become a tremendous leader as a young guy. But he's not a young guy anymore, is he?" Harbaugh said. "He's a premier player. He's a playmaker. He's a great guy, very mature, and one of the hardest working guys on the team."

Rice amassed a combined 2,041 yards in 2009 and earned a berth in the Pro Bowl, but he believes he's a better football player now because of the knowledge he gained from Leach and Ricky Williams, who has settled into the role of Rice's backup.

"Between Vonta and Ricky Williams, they've been the best thing that's happened to me since I've been a Raven," Rice said. "I learn a lot from Vonta and Ricky. Vonta, essentially, is going to take me where I need to be, and that's in the run game."

Leach made the Pro Bowl last season for the job he did in front of Foster, and Rice is all for seeing Leach make a return trip.

"I'm a fan of sending Leach to the Beach," Rice said, referring to the sandy shores of Honolulu.

Asked to compare Foster to the smaller Rice, Leach said, "Foster is more of an upright runner, and Ray has a low center of gravity. Both of them can be on the field for first, second and third downs. They make people miss, and that's a home run. I've had the pleasure of blocking for both of them. I'm the lucky guy."

Leach has provided holes for Rice to zip through, and Williams, 34, has given the 24-year-old Rice veteran guidance.

"With Ricky, he asks me questions and I ask him questions," Rice said. "We're always picking each other's brain."

But Williams has a hard time picking Rice's best quality.

"He's definitely a great running back, definitely a leader," Williams said. "He's strong, elusive and explosive. When you add all those things together, you understand why he's so effective."

Growing up in New Rochelle, N.Y., Rice often heard he was too small to play football. The refrain was repeated at Rutgers, and many wondered whether he could survive in the NFL.

The question has been answered.

"I've gotten over that part. That's part of the proving part," Rice said. "Look at (5-7) Jones-Drew. Nobody worries about his size anymore because he's packing a powerful punch. I feel like my situation was the same thing. Once you get known as a great football player, you just go from there."

Lars is a Sami, one of the indigenous people living in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia who have been herding reindeer and producing reindeer meat since the 16th century.

The Sami are 20,000 strong in Sweden, and 3,000 of them still rely on reindeer to earn a living. Reindeer meat is very tender, low in fat and can be prepared in a number of dishes, including roasts, stews, cold cuts and steaks.
Lars begrudgingly shared his meat-smoking secrets with COLORS: “Cut the reindeer meat into layers, then place it in a bucket with salt and add some sugar. Leave it for 10 days. The day before smoking it, place it in the cooler.
Then hang the meat in the smokehouse and light a fire of old, wet birch wood. Smoke it for 30 to 40 hours.” Lars grins as he continues, “Then circle it three times singing as badly as you can. You see, Caruso could never make meat taste like mine. He sings too sweetly.” Reindeer herders follow the animals’ seasonal migration from high mountains in the spring and summer to forest grazing grounds in the winter. “Reindeer herding is not a normal job,” says award-winning producer Lennart Blindh, 60. “If you choose this work, it’s a different set of values. It’s the freedom to be with nature, where life revolves around the seasons.” But landowners have different values, and in recent years have brought lawsuits against the Sami, challenging their right to let reindeer graze on their property. They want the Sami to pay SKr20 (US$2.80) per hectare for grazing rights.
“It’s ridiculous,” exclaims student Eli Larsdotter Brynhildsvoll, 28. “The herders don’t have that kind of money.
So the landowners want someone else to pay. But who? Everybody thinks the Swedish government is looking out for the Samis, but in the end they’re letting us down.”
An animal welfare group have criticised the Swedish furniture company, Ikea, for selling reindeer meat urging the chain to get it off their shelves.
Ikea have been accused of animal cruelty by Viva! as they claim that modern hunting methods causes the animals stress and are cruelly exploited at the hands of hunters.
The campaigners of Viva!, the Vegetarian’s International Voice for Animals, believe that by selling the meat Ikea is condoning animal cruelty and will continue to do so unless the meat is no longer sold in their stores.
The modern hunting method involves the reindeers being surrounded by helicopters, herded by snowmobiles and then trucked several hundred miles causing them mental stress.
Ikea, with 17 stores in the UK, sells reindeer meat in its food halls, along with other Swedish food products, at £1.75 for 30g of reindeer salami and £2.25 for 100g of reindeer.
A Viva! Spokesman said, “We are calling on the company to withdraw the sales of the meat, due to the cruel exploitation these wild animals suffer at the hands of the huntsmen”.

More than 70% of the slaughtered reindeer are calves, meaning they die before they get to see snow, the animal welfare group claims.
The group used evidence from Uppsala University in Sweden from 2005 to back up the reasoning behind their argument. It demonstrates that the reindeers were caused “considerable physical and mental stress” due to the modern uses of motorcycles, snowmobiles and helicopters in the extensive hunting process.
Viva!’s claims and the evidence from the Swedish university showed that the pain did not stop at the catching process. Once caught the reindeer had to be transported up to 1,000 km only to meet their end.
Ikea’s response go against these accusations denying that they were cruel and strove to make sure they met animal welfare standards.
A statement released by Ikea said that the figure that said that 70% of reindeers being caught were calves represented “a national figure for Sweden” and was not specific to Ikea.
The use of modern machinery was also defended in the statement stating that it keeps the reindeer safe from predators and is used “because of the large size of the reindeer herding area (half the size of Sweden)”.
The charity has already removed Kangaroo and other exotic animals from the shelves of supermarkets to fight animal cruelty.

Top 10 American home styles, There may be no place like home, but most of the places Americans choose to live have a certain style in common.

Whether it's art deco, Cape Cod or Spanish Eclectic, an architectural style defines where we live.

"Architecture is public art," says Clark Manus, president of the American Institute of Architects and CEO of San Francisco's Heller Manus, one of the nation's most respected architectural partnerships. It's about more than detail: "It's the quality of the thought process behind it that makes a house good or bad," he says.

To give you an idea of the range and diversity of houses, we asked Manus to describe 10 styles that are most representative of homes in the U.S. See if your own home's style is among them.

1. Prairie School
Some U.S. architectural styles imitate those from other countries or reference once-popular styles. Others, such as the Prairie School style, were new and represented a reaction to existing architectural types.

Originating in the United States, Prairie-style houses were designed to blend in with the flat Midwestern landscape. They often feature an earth-tone color palette, wood trim and horizontal board-and-batten siding. Later, Prairie homes used concrete blocks.

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was the main proponent of this style, Manus says, "but there were at least a dozen others working in a style similar to his." The style began at the end of the 19th century and gained steady popularity with many houses built in Illinois and other Midwest states into the early 1920s.

Spot it: You can spot a Prairie-style home by its clean, horizontal lines and its balance of ornamentation and simplicity.

Buy a Prairie-style home: Wright's Brandes House, built in 1952 in Sammamish, Wash., is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's for sale for $1.45 million.

2. Victorian/Queen Anne
The Victorian era spans more than 60 years and includes many types of architecture. The Queen Anne style, popularized in the later part of the Victorian era, is one of the most distinctive in this country, Manus says.

It was the dominant style for homes built in the United States from 1880 to 1910. Machine Age techniques and new power tools allowed middle-class American families to adopt all manner of ornamentation and fancy woodwork to embellish front porches and trim.

Spot it: You can tell a Queen Anne-style home by its flamboyant combination of Victorian excesses such as turrets, gables, bays and towers.

Buy a Queen Anne-style home: This four-bedroom, two-bath home in Athens, N.Y., is for sale for $349,000.

3. Cape Cod
When English settlers came to New England, they built houses that emulated the stone cottages they left behind. Lacking stone, they used a material they found in abundance there and elsewhere in the New World: wood.

The house style was simple with little ornamentation. The Victorians ushered in a revival.

"A further progression of the style came in the 1930s, with many (Cape Cods) built in newly developed suburban areas across America," Manus says.

Most 20th-century Cape Cod homes are 1.5 stories tall. Although older Cape Cods have a centrally located chimney, revival Cape Cods offset it to one end of the house. Cape Cods remain a desired home style today, popular because of their finished basements, detached garages, finished half-stories and dormer windows.

Spot it: A Cape Cod-style home is notable for its lack of ornamentation, minimal roof overhang and dormer windows.

Buy a Cape Cod-style home: This three-bedroom, one-bath home in Dennis, Mass., built in 1940, is listed for $724,900.

4. Art deco
Art deco style started at a 1925 design exposition in Paris, which championed the innovations of the modern world. Although the style is a celebration of the future, it often borrows its decorative, geometric ornamentation from ancient civilizations, including the zigzag patterns found in Aztec and Mayan art.

The style may have originated in France, but it really found favor in the U.S.

"It's predominantly urban," Manus says. "You see examples most often in places such as New York City, Los Angeles and Miami."

As a mostly decorative movement, art deco it didn't impose big changes on the interior layout of homes. Although art deco houses were often built with semi-open living areas, they generally preserved older ideas of privacy by keeping bedrooms separated from gathering areas.

Spot it: You can spot an art deco home by its geometric ornamentation, streamlined exterior and symmetrical, repeating patterns.

Buy an art deco-style home: Although it was built in 1992, this four-bedroom, four-bath home in North Miami, Fla., features art deco flourishes throughout. It's listed for $1.69 million.

5. Craftsman bungalow
In the 1880s, the "arts and crafts" movement was under way in England. There, artists and thinkers such as John Ruskin and William Morris celebrated handicrafts and encouraged the use of natural materials.

In the next 30 years, the movement took hold all over the U.S., especially in the West.

"Here in California, the homes built by Greene and Greene are a perfect example of the style," Manus says. The two builder brothers, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, constructed bungalow-style houses in Pasadena, Calif., that are considered to be among the finest examples of the style.

Spot it: You can tell a Craftsman bungalow-style home by its wood, stone or stucco siding, as well as its low-pitched roof and beamed ceilings.

Buy a Craftsman bungalow-style home: This remodeled two-bedroom, one-bath home in Pasadena, Calif., built in 1923, is listed for $420,000.

6. Ranch house
The ranch-style house sprang up with the rise of the huge suburban developments after World War II.

Changing lifestyles were reflected in new floor plans. Eating, entertaining and preparing food were activities that no longer needed to be separated by walls. Distinctions between indoor and outdoor spaces also began to blur, with patios and sliding-glass doors creating new ways to use space.

With communities spreading out and making automobile ownership necessary, the carport and garage become features themselves, often attached or built into the home.

Spot it: A ranch-style home is known for its long, low profile; attached garage or carport; and minimal use of decoration.

Buy a ranch-style home: This three-bedroom, two-bath ranch house in New Caney, Texas, built in 1968, is for sale for $158,100.

7. Spanish Eclectic
Originally known as Spanish Colonial Revival, this style borrows some of its distinctive design features from Spain and Italy.

The opening of the Panama Canal and the Panama-California Exposition in 1915 helped promote all things Latin-American and popularized this Spanish look. The growing influence of Hollywood and the development of Southern California also played roles, as movie stars and executives began to be photographed outside their Spanish-themed mansions.

Manus says of the style: "It's easily recognizable with its clay tile roofs, white stucco and bright Mediterranean colors."

Spot it: Telltale signs of a Spanish Eclectic-style home are its low-pitched roof —often red — stucco siding and arches.

Buy a Spanish Eclectic-style home: With three bedrooms and three baths, this home in Los Angeles' Hancock Park area is listed for $1.17 million.

8. Tudor Revival
The Tudor period in Great Britain was between the late 15th century and the early 17th century. Borrowing from that period, Tudor houses in the U.S. are modern re-creations and are more often known as Tudor Revival homes. Primarily built at the end of the 1800s and early 1900s, some refer in style to humble cottages with thatched roofs. More expensive houses were built on a grander scale as vast mansions.

Spot it: You can tell a Tudor Revival home by its visible timber framing, gables, parapets and patterned brick or stonework.

Buy a Tudor Revival home: This four-bedroom, three-bath home in Shaker Heights, Ohio, got a new roof in April. It's listed for $259,900.

9. Colonial Revival
This style became fashionable after an exhibition marking the nation's centennial in 1876. Its popularity grew through the early 1900s.

The style was all about patriotism and a desire to retreat from earlier Victorian excesses and build something more authentically American.

Manus says there's a progression from the simplicity of the Colonial Revival style and similarly stripped-down styles that later became popular, such as the small, no-frills bungalows still seen across the country.

Spot it: You can spot a Colonial Revival home by its symmetrical façade, brick or wood siding, gabled roof and use of pillars or columns.

10. Contemporary
Many homes built in the early 21st century reference design elements from a range of historical periods. They mix styles to create hybrids that are idealized, nostalgic and not rooted in any particular time period.

In addition to reflecting older styles, contemporary home design reflects today's lifestyles, with open floor plans, areas designed to flow into one another and the inclusion of multiuse spaces, such as great or family rooms.

Spot it: It's not always easy to distinguish a contemporary-style home. It could look sleek and modern on the outside, or it may borrow features from other styles.

Civilians claim that heavy gunfire broke out around 8am between security forces and escapees. The situation in the city has now returned to normal, with only one armored vehicle guarding the entrance of Jol Al-Saifa’a where the central prison is located.

The General-Secretary of Mukala’s Local Council, Mohammad Bin Ziad, who has been following the incident, told the Yemen Times that the confirmed number of escapees is 65 so far. However, he also said more details will be released after investigations have been carried out and eyewitnesses questioned.

“There was an external attack on the prison,” said Bin Ziad. “People broke into the prison from outside and slaughtered the guards. There are eyewitnesses and fatalities on both sides.”

According to Bin Ziad, one of the attackers was shot dead in the gunfight, but due to security reasons no names as yet can be released.

The Yemen Times contacted the head of Al-Mukalla’s security on the phone who angrily responded, “For information call the minister [of the interior],” before hanging up.

Al-Qaeda vowed earlier to escalate its operations to prove that the death of its founder, Osama Bin Laden who was recently killed in Pakistan, does not effect its operations. AQAP has recently launched a number of successful attacks in Abyan governorate, taking advantage of a power vacuum that has existed since security forces have been removed to deal with the popular uprisings sweeping the country.

Al-Qaeda in Yemen has also vowed to escalate its activity against the state. Both the state and the opposition parties have promised to fight Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsular (AQAP) in order to gain the trust of the US, according to Rashad Abi Al-Feda, an AQAP spokesman.

Amed Al-Zurqa, a political analyst, said that the escape might have been planned by the regime to “mix the papers,” and make Al-Qaeda more active. This would be to gain international attention and raise concerns about what would happen the current regime was overthrown.

“Most of those who escaped are from Hadramout and Shabwa, so they know the area very well. But the large number of them [who escaped] makes us suspect that it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for neglect by the prison responsible,” said Al-Zurqa.

Al-Zurqa said that this will likely lead to increasing chaos in the city, and more violence, especially the assassination of state officials and security members.

The last major breakout by Al Qaeda militants in Yemen took place in 2006 from a detention facility in Sana’a. At that time, 23 inmates escaped including several key Al-Qaeda operatives. One of those who escaped was Nasir Al-Wuhayshi, a former secretary to Osama bin Laden, who terrorist experts say had trained in Afghanistan.

Miss India detained at airport. Mumbai: Miss India Earth 2011 Hasleen Kaur was detained at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Wednesday night for allegedly carrying branded purses and cosmetics worth Rs. 1.9 lakh without declaring them.

According to Custom officials, Superintendent of Customs Ashok Pandit intercepted Kaur, who had arrived at the airport from Thailand on Wednesday night.

The officials revealed that Hasleen Kaur was carrying branded purses and cosmetics, which she hadn't declared. When the officials approached her and stated that they intended to check the goods, she told them that the purses she was carrying were local products.

Undeterred by her reasoning, the officials detained Kaur, confiscated her belongings and only then allowed her to leave.

Earlier this year, actors Minissha Lamba and Bipasha Basu, producer Ekta Kapoor and TV actor Swapnil Joshi had been detained by the Customs for not declaring goods.
