Elster chosen to deliver a full end-to-end smart grid solution with G3-PLC smart meters and full MDM system in Gibraltar

Mainz-Kastel, Germany, 14th July 2015 – The Gibraltar Electricity Authority (GEA) has selected Elster to provide smart grid capabilities across its upcoming pilot, which is set to be operational by the end of 2015. Elster will deliver its full end-to-end solution, covering modular smart meters, G3-PLC communication modules, data concentrators, meter data collection and management and installation services.

“We have chosen Elster to assist us in fulfilling EU and governmental directives on lowering carbon emissions and reducing end-customer energy consumption as Elster are able to deliver a full end-to-end PLC based solution with British Standard meters to our requirements. As the single supplier for our pilot programme, not only was it important for the GEA to select an end-to-end smart metering provider that can offer the best technical solution, but also one that is able and capable of providing the GEA with the necessary technical support” said Mr Mario Federico, Senior Network & Customer Services Engineer, GEA and Mr Paul Thomas, Metering Officer, GEA. “After evaluating different PLC communication technology we found that the G3-PLC solution of Elster was the most suitable for our needs.”

Elster will supply the GEA with 1066 AS220 smart meters and 27 AS3000/AS3500 modular smart meters, with AM540 G3-PLC communication modules, 12 RTU+Server2 transparent gateway data concentrators and the EIServer™ Head End and Meter Data Management suite. The project will use the customer’s own fibre optic network currently being installed for data flow between the gateways and the EIServer Meter Data Collection system. Delivery of the hardware is to be expected by August, and the full system will be operational by end of 2015. It is expected that the end-to-end system will provide accurate energy consumption and power quality data, contributing to the reduction of customers’ energy consumption and also generation costs.

The GEA is Gibraltar’s principle generator, distributor and supplier of electricity and was established with the objective of supplying electricity in an efficient and economical manner, and to maintain and develop the network and generating system. Currently the GEA has approximately 20,000 customers divided into 20% commercial and 80% residential, which is expected to increase by 50% within the next 10 year.

“The pilot project includes all the functions in the value chain, from advanced smart meters, communication modules, data concentrators and Meter Data Collection and Management,” said Kim Norgaard, Global Head of Solutions, Elster. “This new contract with the GEA demonstrates that Elster is one of the few companies able to deliver fully in-house developed G3-PLC solutions to the market.”

KORTRIJK, Belgium, 13 November 2014 — ASDA, the UK supermarket giant, has awarded Elster EnergyICT a new five-year contract for delivery of EnactoTM 9.3. This is the latest version of the company’s pioneering Enacto energy monitoring management platform. ASDA will use EnactoTM 9.3 to manage more than 10,000 meters in over 660 sites across the UK. Delivered as software as a service (SaaS), EnactoTM will enable ASDA to reduce energy costs and increase savings with an intelligent, user-friendly and self-learning solution.

ASDA has been working with Elster EnergyICT since 2005 and has achieved a 30 per cent reduction in energy usage. It is committed to matching the 2020 target set by its parent company, Walmart, to reduce energy usage by 20 per cent compared with 2010 levels. EnactoTM 9.3 will support this by enabling ASDA to examine different assets and equipment at site level, whilst building a clear and concise view of energy usage across the broader estate. This partnership strengthens Elster’s relationship with Walmart, which recently signed a deal across over 2,000 of its stores in Mexico.

“Elster EnergyICT has a proven track record in helping us deliver tangible energy and cost savings,” said Louise Hall, Energy Manager, ASDA. “The EnactoTM 9.3 solution will give us full view of our energy usage across our estate and enable us to continue to manage and reduce our energy consumption.”

A competitive tender resulted in ASDA choosing Elster’s EnactoTM 9.3 solution. Using this platform, ASDA will be able to pinpoint energy waste and unlock hidden energy consumption patterns. EnactoTM 9.3 is a cloud-hosted platform with built-in intelligence and self-learning capability. It analyses data and alerts energy managers to areas needing attention. The platform learns from the actions taken to prevent unnecessary alarms in the future. Optimum savings can be achieved with EnactoTM’senhanced, flexible and granular reporting, across any asset or site measurement point.

“We are delighted that ASDA has chosen to continue our partnership together,” said Jon Peck, Account Manager, Elster EnergyICT. “ASDA recognises the significant energy savings our solutions provide and will continue to build on the foundations we have set for increasing its energy efficiency and achieving its 2020 targets.”

The Energy Management Exhibition (EMEX) 2014

Elster EnergyICT will be exhibiting their next-generation energy management solution Enacto™ at the Energy Management Exhibition on Stand H5 from 19-20 November 2014.

In addition, Vice President Energy Management Spencer Rigler will also be part of the EMEX seminar programme joining an expert line-up of speakers and sharing his views on “The Energy Savings Pyramid” on the 19th of November from 15:50-16:30.

A Midlands home owner in search of a heat recovery solution for a Victorian terraced house, commissioned Ventive to supply two of their passive ventilation systems (Ventive S) to the property.

Built in 1884, the house has suffered from poor air circulation with associated damp and condensation problems for many years.

Ventive’s unique Passive Ventilation with Heat Recovery (PVHR) system – which is designed to breathe fresh air into a house through the existing chimney stack – was installed in the bedroom and living room of the property as part of an energy efficiency retrofit. The product uses a combination of air buoyancy and wind (active from very low wind speeds) to create a flow of air within the interior of the house; ensuring higher standards of air quality are achieved and maintained.

Rob Morrison, Managing Director, Ventive said:

“The installation was successfully completed in the spring of 2014 and the owner, who suffers from a dust mite allergy (associated to damp problems), now enjoys a number of noticeable health benefits and has reported fewer symptoms and improved overall air quality.”

He went on to say:

“Having a completely passive solution, has meant that the heat is retained within the property during the winter without the operating burden normally associated with heat recovery ventilation. The owner is confident that the Ventive system will contribute towards further cost savings on his heating bills during the colder months of the year, as well as providing a year round healthy indoor environment.”

Savvy suppliers are always on the lookout to offer what their customers need. Now more than ever, organisations in both the private and public sectors across Europe are desperate to implement and demonstrate energy reductions for a host of interrelated reasons.

If a supplier, especially one selling an energy intensive offering such as heating, venting, air conditioning (HVAC) or lighting, can add energy management systems (EMS) to their offering, then they instantly gain a string to their bow at the expense of competitors who don’t.

As for why now is the time to look at offering EMS: the reason is twofold. On the one hand, a quick glance at a utility bill will tell you what everyone already knows: despite fluctuations, the trend for energy prices only points upwards. Secondly, the influx of energy efficiency legislation that binds both private and public entities to making and demonstrating significant savings makes it the perfect time for value added resellers to consider EMS. One of the chief of these is the European Energy Efficiency Directive. If the opportunity to reduce ever-increasing energy bills is the carrot, then this directive is the stick to encourage reduced energy consumption and greater energy efficiency.

Leading by example

Since January, central governments have been expected to lead by example, by renovating three per cent of the buildings they own or occupy. This is a welcome move. For many bodies, access to refurbishment funds has been dependent on their ability to demonstrate energy savings. The directive creates a new framework in which refurbishment is to be actively undertaken in order to reduce energy consumption.

The focus on building renovation could deliver significant results: buildings account for 42 per cent of electricity consumed – more than any other physical asset. For government bodies that use and own multiple premises, it’s an opportunity to deliver major savings in operating costs.

For the private sector, the demands are a little less stringent, but very much still a cause for thought. The new measures include the obligation for large enterprises to carry out an energy audit to identify ways to reduce consumption at least every four years – with the first no later than December 2015. SMEs will be incentivised to follow suit.

Under the new directive, public bodies will also have to take into account energy efficiency when it comes to procurement for goods and services, within reasonable bounds of cost-effectiveness and economic feasibility. But compliance with the directive is implicitly dependent on the ability to monitor, measure and validate energy consumption over time, as it is for all programmes intending to deliver sustainable reductions in energy use. Demonstrating energy savings is as important as making the savings in the first place. Not only is it the only way to satisfy regulators, voters and taxpayers, it is critical if energy saving programmes are to stay on track and continue delivering improvements to public finances.

In the private sector, compulsory energy audits are unlikely to be feasible without the ability to effectively measure and demonstrate energy usage and reductions. In fact, the lack of such a monitoring capability severely undermines any effort to create more energy-efficient organisations: having reliable visibility of energy consumption is a critical step when taking action to reduce it.

The key to this visibility is a system of monitoring and verification, which can provide the necessary information to produce an action plan that can be embedded in an organisation’s processes and used to track progress.

This kind of data collection and analysis that enables organisations to determine whether a decrease in energy consumption is really attributable to a new and more efficient HVAC installation, or whether it is a seasonal adjustment to changes in the weather, for example. It assesses the effectiveness of individual equipment, provides the foundation for energy-saving projects, and supports long-term changes in behaviour patterns by engaging individuals with real-time data about the impact of their activities.

Adoption by retailers

Energy management systems are increasingly adopted by large retailers and other multi-site, consumer-focused, and power-intensive organisations across Europe – particularly when new equipment is installed or buildings refurbished. Experience has shown that effective use of energy management systems alongside concerted energy savings programmes can reduce energy consumption by 20 to 30 per cent. These systems have informed and empowered some of the most successful energy-reduction programmes seen to date, and play a critical role in reducing the financial risks associated with energy consumption – often for businesses operating on the tightest of margins.

With this track record, energy management systems have clear advantages for public sector bodies – which operate on the tightest margins of all. But energy management procurement may develop its own business model in the public sector.

The European directive’s requirement to take energy efficiency into account during procurement creates interesting opportunities for smart suppliers of any building-related services. Public sector organisations will increasingly select value-added resellers: those vendors, contractors and consultants who can supply modern, energy efficient heating, lighting or ventilation systems accompanied by, or even incorporating, energy management systems.

The new website MyGreenHeat.co.uk, from installers GreenACT Ltd, will help you find out.

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government scheme to encourage the uptake of renewable heat technologies through the provision of financial incentives. In April this year, it extended the scheme to domestic consumers. Owners of eligible installations can claim up to 18.8p/kWh of renewable energy they use. For a mid-sized family-home with a well-matched ground-source heat pump system, these incentive payments would be £3,411 per year, for seven years. On top of that, the monthly running costs would be 49% lower, compared to oil-fired central heating.

Sounds compelling, doesn’t it? Well, it is!

The size of these incentives is a clue: adopting renewable heating is a bigger change than simply swapping your boiler. It often means changing radiators, or adding new equipment that allows a heat pump to operate at its most efficient level. Using energy from the ground also brings some disruption to the garden and surrounding area. The house itself may be in need of higher levels of insulation before the system can operate at the highest levels of efficiency. The RHI is designed to pay the extra cost of ‘going green’ and put something else into your pocket too.

At some point, the homeowner will need bespoke advice on what exactly is technically feasible and what the cost will be to swap over to renewable heating. However, GreenACT has developed a quick and easy way of helping homeowners see the potential savings they could make and also how suitable their home currently is to the use of a ground or air-source heat pump, providing renewable heating. For many people, this will provide them with answers to the question “is renewable heating for me?”

– and it’s entirely free to use.

Website report:

PDF Report:

Here’s how it works:

Step One: browse to www.MyGreenHeat.co.uk and start to create your Report. Enter the amount you spend on heating at the moment, together with the type of fuel and whether it also provides domestic hot water and energy for cooking.

Step Two: answer 6 key questions about your home – all answers are ‘select from list’ types.

Step Three: the MyGreenHeat engine prepares a bespoke report, based on the information you supplied, showing:

Running Cost Comparisonif you were to swap your existing heating system for one based on renewable energy – ground or air-source heat pumps – what differences would you see in monthly running costs.

Readiness to Use Renewable Heathow ready is your home to take advantage of renewable technology and what would be involved in the conversion.

You can view the information on the MyGreenHeat website and also download the Report as a PDF file that you can print and keep for reference.

It lets you know the potential benefits and challenges, in an unbiased and objective way. If your home is well-suited to renewable heating, then you’re well on your way to taking advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive and reducing the cost of heating your home.

Founder & Director of Clean Air London, Simon Birkett recently wrote an article for Environmental Health News on the Misconceptions about air pollution.

The piece contains a series of cartoons which the campaign group Clean Air in London commissioned to address the capital’s environmental challenges. Beautifully crafted by Andy Davey (@DaveyCartoons), the cartoons address matters such as London smog, wood burning, the tube, cycling and taxis.

The first misconception mentioned within the article ’12 Misconceptions about air pollution’ is that ‘air quality is better than it was’.

The Facts:
Visible coal smoke disappeared after the Clean Air Act and has been replaced by diesel exhaust and other largely invisible particles and gases. During this time, the certainty and scale of the health effects of air pollution have rocketed upwards while public understanding has remained where it was 30 years ago for smoking.

What you need to know:

Outdoor air pollution infiltrates into buildings. Without appropriate ventilation, it accumulates and can even react with other indoor air pollutants.

Indoor air pollution is made of outdoor air pollutants, including heating and traffic particles and gases that infiltrate into our buildings as well as chemicals emissions from building materials, DIY products, cleaning products, air fresheners, combustion particles from heating, cooking and candles, pets allergens, electronics and appliances off-gasing.

The most important part of indoor Air quality is the cleanliness of the air.

Air contamination consist of particles, gases and vapours that may reduce the well-being and health of humans and decrease the output and efficiency of production processes.

We breathe 25kg of air per day. If that air is polluted or unclean, what are the implications on work place productivity and more importantly, what is the impact on human health?

Multi-site organisations can reduce energy costs and increase savings with intelligent, user-friendly and self-learning solution.

Elster EnergyICT has announced the launch of Enacto 9.3 which delivers comprehensive, accurate and actionable energy intelligence to energy managers to allow them to reduce energy costs and increase savings. The launch brings new features and enhanced functionality to meet the evolving needs of multi-site organisations in the commercial and retail sectors. This is the latest version of the company’s pioneering Enacto energy monitoring management platform and portfolio.

Enacto 9.3 enables users to examine different assets and equipment at site level, while building a clear and concise view of energy usage across the broader estate. This level of visibility ensures users can see where energy is being wasted and unlock hidden patterns in their organisation’s energy consumption to improve business performance.

Enacto 9.3 is a cloud-hosted platform with built-in intelligence and self-learning capability. It analyses data and automatically alerts energy managers to areas needing attention. Furthermore, the platform learns from the actions taken in order to prevent unnecessary alarms being raised in the future. Optimum savings can be achieved with Enacto’s enhanced, flexible and granular reporting, across any asset or site measurement point.

“Working with major national and global clients, we have first-hand experience of the challenges they face, and a proven track record in delivering tangible energy and cost savings,” says Spencer Rigler, Vice President Energy Management for Elster EnergyICT.

“Enacto 9.3 is the direct result of our heritage and front-line experience, with major commercial multi-site enterprises globally giving a unique approach to energy visualisation and management within the context of a company’s real-world needs and processes. It brings a new level of automation by enabling energy managers to overcome the deluge of data and target areas that deliver the greatest savings.”

Advanced users of the Enacto platform are currently seeing a 25-30 per cent energy reduction on their baseline. With powerful and intricate analysis of energy usage with an automated energy alarm process, Enacto 9.3 ensures that asset inefficiencies, equipment faults and wasteful behaviour are identified early and highlighted as action points.

Project and savings tracking tools independently monitor actions and outcomes to quantify success, enabling the energy manager to verify current and predicated ROI at an asset or site level. Furthermore user-friendly and user defined dashboards allow the presentation of energy data analytics and reporting to all levels in the organisation.

“The ability to link robust and reliable data collection with a highly-functional and user-friendly presentation layer is essential,” says Kristof Lamont, Product Manager Energy Intelligence, Elster EnergyICT. “Using Enacto 9.3, energy managers and staff can maximise the impact of energy management programmes, effect behavioural change, and realise significant and sustainable cost savings over the long-term.”

DECC has published the Government Response to the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) consultation and laid regulations in Parliament to give legal effect to the scheme, and published guidance for potential scheme participants. A copy of the Government Response and DECC Guidance can be found at:www.gov.uk/government/consultations/energy-savings-opportunity-scheme.

ESOS is an energy assessment scheme that is mandatory for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria. The Environment Agency is the UK scheme administrator. Organisations that qualify for ESOS must carry out ESOS assessments every 4 years. These assessments are audits of the energy used by their buildings, industrial processes and transport to identify cost-effective energy saving measures.

Organisations must then notify the Environment Agency by a set deadline that they have complied with their ESOS obligations. By 5 December 2015, qualifying organisations must carry out their ESOS assessment and notify the Environment Agency. Participants must then carry out an ESOS assessment in each 4-year compliance period, ending on 5 December 2019, 2023 and so on. By the end of 2014, the Environment Agency will provide information about the online notification system and when this will be available. ESOS applies to large UK undertakings and their corporate groups. It mainly affects businesses but can also apply to not-for-profit bodies and any other non public sector undertakings that are large enough to meet the qualification criteria.

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme Regulations 2014 are published on www.legislation.gov.uk.

The Environment Agency, who have been appointed the scheme administrator for ESOS have also opened a help-desk to provide advice to potential participants on how to comply with the scheme. If you have any queries after reading the guidance, you can email the help-desk on: ESOS@environment-agency.gov.uk

The Environment Agency will also be publishing a summary of the scheme online at: www.gov.uk/energy-savings-opportunity-scheme-esos.

[EXTRACT] Case study 4: Camfil – ISO 50001 Energy Management System Implementation

Camfil develop air filters and clean air solutions, and operate globally. Already certified to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, EN 16001 and the BSI Kitemark in Energy Reduction Verification, in 2011 Camfil decided to certify to ISO 50001. Camfil has put energy management at the heart of its business model. It has initiated an energy reduction programme, the Camfil Energy Awareness Saves Environment (CEASE), and its key objective is to educate property and building managers about the financial and energy saving opportunities that can be made by replacing existing air filters with low energy air filters.

The introduction of ISO 50001, alongside its existing energy management processes, led to Camfil looking at its energy use in more detail and a focus on continual improvement of energy performance. This meant that previously unmonitored areas of energy use were identified and energy savings achieved that would otherwise have been overlooked.

Results:

As a result of the energy management steps that Camfil has taken, significant reductions in energy usage and improvements in energy efficiency have been achieved. These improvements resulted in Camfil saving over £200,000 on energy bills through minimal cost, self-funding opportunities..
