Check it; go ask all ya friends, every one of em, if they have heard of Digg, or Stumbleupon, or Twitter, or Friendfeed; ask em if they have a MySpace or Facebook account; then ask em if they blog; while ya at it ask em if they know what an RSS Feed is, or what a feed reader is. If ya answers come back anything like mine, ya’ll find most people have no clue what is going on online. I know it is hard to believe but, those of us online are in the minority. In my little unscientific study I asked a handful of stangers, (total randoms, people sitting next to me on a flight, my flight attendants, people standin’ in line etc.) Yea, I know, I’m crazy, but people love talkin’ to an Ant. What I learned is most people don’t have a clue, check it out.

Web 2.0 is blowin’ up. Facebook and Myspace have over a 100 million users between the two of em. MyBlogLog, Blog Catalog are growin. Flickr and Photobucket have changed the way pics are managed, and Twitter is just goin’ mad crazy. Despite all this energy and growth, ya average cat has no idea what any of this stuff is. Ask any random person what Twitter is and watch their face contort with confusion. Ya really wanna have fun, tell em ya gonna Twit em. Just hope that ya don’t get slapped and arrested for sexual harassment.

We spend so much time online, buried in all the newest sites, makin’ connections, promoting our blogs, finding new content, it all seems like second nature to us. The truth is, most people don’t have a clue, and they ain’t online socially.

When you look at it like this, it begs a few questions, ARE they comin’? Why aren’t they here now? What are they waitin’ for?

Me and the boys think it’s cause todays sites don’t offer a lot of depth or value. Great at connecting but not much more, they remind of us of the ole Wendy’s commercial “Where’s the Beef?” The biggest value many sites offer today is just sheer size. We get it, ya can’t argue with size. But, are sheer numbers gonna be enough to get ya neighbor into Web 2.0?

cre8Buzz is bettin’ that folks want more. The thing we hear the most is folks questionin’ the value of Social Networking. We hear things like, “why would I get on Facebook with a bunch of kids” or after I explain Twitter, “Why would I want to do that, tell the whole world what I am doing all the time? I have better things to do.” The average cat in today’s world NOT involved in Social Media will jump in when there is more discernible, measurable, straightforward value.

Me and the boys at cre8Buzz believe that value will come in the form of CONTENT and community. People’s interests and needs are varied, therefore the value of Social Networks will vary. The shotgun approach to Social Media like Facebook and Myspace are underwhelming once they get past their original value of connecting friends. Think about it, the very foundation of those two sites was kids; college and H.S.. What is the number one “value” of kids? It is staying connected, to their friends and to their music. Thus, they delivered brilliantly on that value. Now they are trying to expand to deliver more than connection value to more people. The reality is they are not structured to do this and are growing for one reason only, audience. They have the numbers. To get ya neighbor from next door on line ya gotta add more value than numbers.

One of the best examples of social media working for the avg cat, is Active Rain. By targeting Real Estate Agents, Active Rain is bringin’ people online who would never have joined MySpace or Facebook through a medium that drives and meets there value needs . . . selling Real Estate. Another good example is Cafe Mom. By providing a forum that brings Moms together from around the world to share ideas, thoughts, and just have fun provides a value for thousands of Mom’s. An other proof positive example comes by the way of Linkedin. Linkedin, offers tremendous value for the working professional. You can almost call Linkedin the “other” social network. I can’t prove it, but I would bet on it. I would bet that less than 10% of the people on Linkedin’ would answer yes to more than two of the questions in the above table. Linkedin’ offers an entirely different value. A value that brings new people into the world of Web 2.0. The vertical social network will be key in bringin’ more people online and into the world of bloggin’, twitter, digg and the likes.

Unfortunately, in most cases vertical interests are too small or not sexy enough to warrant a social network, therefore, they won’t exist. If ya think about it, it is hard to imagine a site for bunny lovers, (yes they exist) called rabbitspace, or how about an Adoption Space for families of adoption. These are real communities in the real world who would find real value in havin’ their own social network, but call me crazy I don’t see anyone buildin’ one soon. The second problem with vertical social networks is they don’t cross over. If ya on Active Rain, how do you interact with folks who are into photography unless you are a member at flickr or redbubble as well. Now ya got two sites. The Facebooks, and Myspaces have the masses and are horizontal, but do little for providing good content in a vertical targeted space. Vertical sites like Linkedin, Active Rain etc, are great for information and providing real content value, but can NOT scale and provide the horizontal breadth of the big boys.

Until a clear, demonstrable, value can be brought to the masses, Web 2.0 will still get a funny look from ya neighbor. The word Twit will get ya punched in the face and Myspace will be that “sexual predator site”

My two cents, cre8Buzz is headed in the right direction. We have the ability to offer both the vertical and horizontal value. We connect people close in interest with people far apart in interest. We make valuable content easy to find. Our users are older, and come to us for more than connecting. They come to find good information, share their wisdom and knowledge as well as engage with the owners of content. Our users are more intelligent, talented, and mature than any other site we know of. We provide more, deeper, richer value.

There are millions of folks with no clue of Web 2.0. Are they comin? How long will it take? Is it soon? I don’t know. But, I can tell ya they ain’t here yet. Go ask ya neighbor, they’ll tell ya with a simple look of; WHAT THE . . . when ya ask em if you can Twit them. That is if they don’t pop ya in the mouth first.

By it’s very nature, a social network attempts to mimic real life social interaction in an electronic fashion. If face-to-face, verbal conversation is the most “authentic” form of human interaction, can sharing comments on a blog, or engaging in a chat, or sending private messages be as “real?” Well, technically, no. However, technology gives us opportunities to participate in virtual experiences, like flying (flight simulators), or rock stardom (karaoke) or even African Safaris (Disneyland, Busch Gardens, etc). A social-network may just a better way to communicate with people across the world.

The authors of Authenticity, James Gilmore and Joseph Pine, argue that we choose to participate in these experiences but we all have a different tolerance for them. (For a recent summary in Time Magazine, click here.) have to conform to our self-image - what we depict and perceive as authentic. If we think that the only coffee that is “real” must be hand ground and made with water from our backyard stream, the Starbucks’ experience is something we will find intolerable. On the other hand, if we think a triple-mocha-latte-double-caf-blah-blah is a great treat, then Starbucks can be a great addition to our lives. In other words, we all have a different definition of what is authentic.

However, I think we all agree that we have little tolerance for slickly marketed phony offers. If we sense that something is contrived or fake, we tend to reject it immediately. Similarly, when we find something that is different from the norm, something that exceeds our expectations for trustworthiness and quality (see Trysh’s post about Canon on the Anthill for example) we are surprised and give it marks for being “real.”

Our goal, as a Cre8buzz team, is to take the social network and render it to be as Authentic as possible. Props to all of our members as you are our source of ideas and inspiration.

Oh, and we can’t wait for a time where we all can meet face-to-face and enjoy an authentic beverage together.

Onward!

Keith here. Marketing and Business guy for Cre8buzz. After an inexcusable hiatus, I’m back to share some insight into the inner workings of Cre8buzz. I’ll continue that this year with a main theme of Authenticity. Here’s why:

Truth #1: We at the ‘Buzz have, at times, struggled with our identity. We launched with a goal of making people famous or at least changing the way people are found – helping the little guy, you know? We wanted to organize along communities of interest and put the best content in front, for everyone to see. We talked about it here and here. We had dreams of someone growing a huge, worldwide following on the Buzz and then making it big and inviting us all to giant parties at their Malibu spread,

What have we accomplished? Well, from your comments, we’ve heard that many members experience upticks in their readership: Hooray! and Double Hooray! which is a good thing. We were also pleasantly surprised to see how much buzzlove our users share. I wrote about it in words and you can now buy some very cool t-shirts.

But fame? Is that a stretch? Is it what we want? Is that what Cre8buzz is about anymore?

This guy is famous:

And so were these guys:

(Click on either. Do it. You know you want to. Yes, I know, it’s true)

Ok, that was fun. Onward.

Truth #2: We do not offer a place for people to find fame. Instead, most Cre8buzzers blog, and participate because they love what they do. They’ll do it whether fame, or money finds them (heck, most would just like a few more hours in the day!)

So why do people love to do what they do more when they can do it on Cre8buzz? What’s the secret? Why do many of us love it? I have a hypothesis: We, and I mean WE, capital W and capital E , you, our Cre8buzz members, our developers, our readers, our investors and that one busy Ant, have something Authentic. For many, Cre8buzz is an extension of who we are and what is most important in their lives: our families, our aspirations, our callings, and our expressions of those passions. When we find others who appreciate our expressions, we can get to know them and build relationships with them. THAT is real. (while all the advertising, PR and hype just tries to tell us what we should think an offering is all about. Grumble, grumble. I’ll save that for another day.)

A little voice in my head is saying: “Wrap up, Keith, wrap up.” Ok, take this for a spin: Cre8buzz is a THE place for serious content providers to make authentic connections while sharing their lives and their stuff.” Or some variation. I guess it doesn’t have to be perfect. I just hope it’s real.

Ya ever wonder what the “secret sauce” is? I’ve always wondered. Ya see it appears to me that “makin it” takes more than being liked or havin’ “fans”. Look at Ron Paul or Mike Huckabee; these cats were wildly popular with their fan base. Their base of constituents were passionate, mad followers. They were enthusiastic, almost rabid fans who would go to any length for their man. What I find interesting is despite this support and passionate following their momentum didn’t spread. The momentum only went so far. Why is this? Why is it that some things go huge and others can’t break into mainstream. Why do some followings continue to grow, while some just stall? Why is it Ron Paul remained insignificant, while Barack Obama has enjoyed massive growth. Why is some slammin’ bands remain in obscurity playin’ to a small, but mad passionate fans while others just explode on to the scene?

What is the difference? I know it’s not havin’ a fan base, cause everyone has one. Is it who they are. Is it the fan base?

Malcolm Gladwell talked about this in the tipping point. Are the unsuccessful missing, connectors, or mavens? That seems too acedemic.

What I do know is, I don’t know what it is.

cre8Buzz has a gang of mad passionate users, the question then remains, are we Ron Paul or Barak Obama; are we The Samples or Dave Mathews?

Peace!

I was diggin’ in the cre8Buzz blog archives and this post got my attention. So, I’m bringin’ it back. It was a good reminder for me. As things get hectic round here, or in life I GOTTA remember this more often. It’s too easy to forget. I’m an emotional Ant!

—– Original Post “React or Respond” 2/27/07—–

So, check it. About 10 years ago . . . damn make that 13 years ago. Dang, I’m gitten old. Anyway, I’m coaching Pop-Warner football. I got the baddest bunch of 12 year olds ya ever seen. We had a slammin team, snap! We were good because we had rules. Everyone knew what to expect. They knew what they could expect from me and I knew what to expect from them. It is what made us good.

One of the simple rules was, if ya ain’t gonna make practice and you were in school that day, ya gotta call and tell me or you don’t play on Sat. It was simple.

Well, one day Johnson, didn’t show up for practice. When I asked the rest of team where he was, like any bunch of 12 year olders, they said:

“I dunno, he was in school.”

So, I walked my skinny but over to the payphone! To those of you born after 1990, we actually had to pay for calls and use a phone that was stuck on a pole on the side of the road. Movin on, I call Johnson and I’m like:

“Dawg, where are you? You were in school, but ya ain’t here on the field. Whas up?”

Johnson said he didn’t feel good. I asked why he didn’t call and he said he forgot. Of course I was like:

“ya gotta get down here if ya wanna play on Sat. You know the rules.”

Johnson said OK, and we hung up. Well about an hour later, I am talking to the team in the huddle and one of the kids says:

“Isn’t that Johnson’s mom? She looks pissed!”

I turn around and dang sure is! She is MAD!!!! She starts stomping across the field, headed straight for me. I’m thinking, she is fired up! As I see her marchin’ toward me, I’m thinking what the heck am I gonna do? I know why she is mad. I know what she wants to talk about. I know I’m right; her son didn’t follow the rules, so as far as I’m concerned she ain’t got nothin to say. But, she is the mother of one of my players, I’m only 23 and still a kid. I’m a bit intimidated. I turn back to the team and get back to coaching. When, Mrs. Johnson barks:

“I need to talk to you, NOW!”

I freeze, think for a second and then RESPOND!

I say:

“I am sorry Mrs. Johnson, but I have 15 other kids I am responsible for right now. But if you like, it would be my pleasure to talk with you at the end of practice.”

She looked at me, all the expression left her face and she said:

“OK, that will be fine.” and she walked off the field.

Why am I givin up this 411? Because, instead of responding, I could have REACTED! I could have gotten into it with her right there on the field. I could have embarrassed me, angered her even more and sent a horrible message to all my little playa’s

Think about it ya’ll, she was marching across the field because she thought I was disrespectin her son. By taking the time and thinking about my RESPONSE and not REACTING it dawned on me that she didn’t want to be seen as impacting the rest of the kids. So by highlighting the fact that I was busy with 15 other boys immediatly disarmed her and allowed me to finish coaching.

Having time to cool off, by the time practice was over, Mrs Johnson and I had a nice amiable conversation.

You and your customers are gonna have disagreements, folks are gonna leave nasty comments on your blog, employees and bosses are gonna piss ya off. Ya gotta expect that, BUT you do have a choice. Are ya gonna RESPOND or are ya gonna REACT?

Choose carefully dawg, for either decision will have very, very, very different outcomes!
