Young Living Essential Oils

2014-02-21T04:30:00.001-08:00

Our family recently started on a journey using essentials oils. Ever since we had kids, I felt like we were sick all the time. Nothing major, but a lot of congestion and colds. We had so many copays last year that we maxed out our medical flex spending account this year in anticipation of all of the visits. Now I wish I could use that flex money for essential oils!!

I started out by buying a diffuser but immediately realized that I should have bought the Premium Starter Kit. My mom and I both ended up buying the Everyday Oils kit the following week and I was immediately in love! She just bought a diffuser this week. :)

Here is our typical run down:

I diffuse thieves in the kitchen -- in fact, I already ran out of the 5 ml bottle that came with the Everyday oils kit and just ordered a 15 mil bottle. It helps kill cold and flu viruses and I put it on the kid's feet whenever they start to come down with something.

I put a drop of lavender on Stu's pillow every night. It makes him sleep like a baby!! In fact, the first night I did it, he said he hadn't slept that soundly since before we had kids!

I diffuse lemon in the kitchen whenever I'm cleaning. I love the fresh citrus scent!

I use peppermint on my stomach for indigestion and on the kids for belly aches.

I combine lavender and peppermint on Jude's chest for congestion.

Lucy has allergies, so I put a drop of lemon, lavender and peppermint in my hands and mix them together and then put it on her feet.

I have learned so much already and feel like I am just dipping my toe in the waters of Essential Oils.

Some of the oils can be applied directly to your skin, but many require what they call a "carrier oil". I use coconut oil or olive oil. You know the old rule -- "Don't put anything on your body that you wouldn't put in your mouth".

The best place to start with oil application is on the soles of your feet. Your skin is thickest there and it's the safest bet. Always wash your hands after application because you wouldn't want to accidentally get the oil in your eyes!!

SO - I sometimes feel like a hippy but oils have already made a huge difference in our lives. We haven't been to the doctor once since we started and I literally just google "essential oils" and the ailment and typically happen to have one of the oils mentioned in my little stash.

Of course, I'm not a doctor - nor do I claim to be - so always seek the advice of your doctor with medical concerns. I do know that I have felt very empowered by learning about oils and we have seen great results in our family.

Hey Jude

2012-01-19T07:35:00.000-08:00

We had our first ultrasound this week and caught a glimpse of our little man! We're going to name him Frazier Jude Robertson - but we'll call him Jude. It's really exciting to finally call "it" a "him" - and I loved seeing him move around on the ultrasound screen. We can't wait to meet this sweet baby boy!!

Preschool Busy Bag Swap

2011-12-18T13:45:00.000-08:00

A friend of mine is hosting a busy bag swap! Here are my entries for:
Ages 2-4: cork drop. Corks fit right in hole (some require pressing down) and make a satisfying kerplunk sound!

Age 4-6: Egg Carton Object Counting with option of a color scavenger hunt

Sensory bin

2011-10-26T13:43:00.000-07:00

A friend told me about these water beads from the dollar tree! They're in the floral department and are really fun for the sensory bin!! They're a choking hazard for little ones, though, so make sure they're out of the mouth phase!! :)

Primary and Secondary colors

2011-09-27T14:21:00.000-07:00

Since Goodnight Moon uses primary colors in so many of the illustrations, Lucy practiced her pouring using the primary colors to make secondary colors! She loves pouring and really enjoyed this activity.

Goodnight moon row

2011-09-26T09:49:00.000-07:00

We're rowing Goodnight Moon this week! We were at Publix and they gave Lucy a red balloon, so we added
that to her shelf. Today we also read My World by the same author and Happy Birthday, Moon by Frank Asch.

Drayton hall

2011-09-24T08:53:00.000-07:00

Today was free museum day and drayton hall was the free museum in our area. Lucy liked walking around the grounds! We skipped the house tour for this time. ;)

The letter b

2011-09-19T10:05:00.000-07:00

Next we made a 'b' book and traced
the sandpaper letter 'b'.

Jesse Bare what will you wear?

2011-09-19T09:56:00.000-07:00

This week's "row" is Jessie Bear! We made shape stamps out of sticky backed foam stickers and foam blocks! Lucy loved it!

Gluing the letter g

2011-09-15T14:52:00.000-07:00

We glued wrapping paper squares to a letter g for gift.

A very merry unbirthday indeed!!

Unbirthday

2011-09-15T13:27:00.000-07:00

Ask Mr Bear is about Danny's mother having a Birthday! Since no one's Birthday was this week, we watched the 'very merry unbirthday' song and made cupcakes!

Animals and their products

2011-09-15T07:41:00.000-07:00

Today we colored the animals and their products from Ask Mr Bear. When she's older we can match the product to each animal. For now, we're just focusing on the animals and their sounds.

Field trip to the Forest

2011-09-12T10:33:00.001-07:00

We visited Angel Oak - a 300-400 year old tree! Lucy loved it!

Milk science experiment

Monday

2011-09-12T07:50:00.000-07:00

We got up at 7:30 and had breakfast, family Bible and prayer time and started our school day. Lucy immediately liked the bear washing and also liked pouring herself water from a small pitcher. A lot ended up on the floor, but she was a wonderful helper in mopping it up with a rag. :) Next, she had a bath and we started our first "row". We read Ask Mr Bear with the help of some animal props I found. Each time a new animal emerged on the scene, I put another animal on the armrest of her rocking chair. She loved it! After one read-through, she asked for "more", so we read it again, introducing the animals again each time.

Next she worked on bear pouring and then we did a science experiment -- with milk (because of the cow in the story) and food coloring. We swirled the colors around. Lucy then went down for a nap. When she gets up, we will do the experiment again adding the dishwashing soap - the colors will swirl on their own!

This afternoon, we may drive out to visit Angel Oak -- because Mr. Bear lives in the forest! The day has been a blast so far! I'm excited about Before Five in a Row and I'm hoping I can stay this motivated. It helps so much to have a bit of a gameplan in place each day. Before, I felt like we just hung around the house all day while I tried to get laundry, etc, done in between playing with Lucy.

Bear washing has been a success!

Bear sensory table

2011-09-11T17:20:00.000-07:00

I put a scoop, bear counters and some trees in the sensory table for the week. She loves the sound of all of the bears wrestling around in the bin as she plays!

Animal puzzle

2011-09-11T17:19:00.000-07:00

We'll talk about animals and their sounds, so this puzzle seemed appropriate!

Paper matching

2011-09-11T17:17:00.000-07:00

We'll talk about the letter "g" - in the book, it mentions "gift, goat, and galloping". So, we're going to match wrapping paper!

Bear patterning

2011-09-11T17:15:00.000-07:00

We're starting to row Ask Mr Bear tomorrow! Here are some of our activities for the week - for some reason I have to do a separate post for each... But here they are! Enjoy!

The school year

2011-09-10T21:11:00.001-07:00

I needed a little structure as we moved into the school year. The last five months have been all about getting to know Lucy and getting adjusted to having a child -- a toddler, no less! She turned two in August.

Several people recommended Before Five in a Row. It arrived on Thursday and I just finished making my plan for the week. Next week, we will "row" Ask Mr Bear. I immediately found three of the suggested books at the library, so we're starting there!

Some of the activities I've found are too old, but I figure we can use this book till she's four if it works for us. So, I've started a binder to track what we do and I'll try to prepare the weekend before so I can do my actual day job during naptimes.

The other exciting plan we have is a homeschool co-op! It meets every Tuesday and rotates homes. Each mom brings a snack and a learning activity based on a certain theme each week. I'm so excited for Lucy to have some socialization as she LOVES being around other kids. Fun fun!
