Collodion Babies or Plastic Babies

The collodion baby is a descriptive term for the infant who is born encased in a tight shiny membrane that resembles plastic wrap. The skin resembles a yellow, tight and shiny film or dried collodion (sausage skin). These babies are often premature. Collodion babies are also known as plastic babies. This is a very rare disease and is found in who are often premature one among every six lakh babies.

The collodion membrane undergoes desquamation or peeling, which is usually complete by 2 to 3 weeks of life. This reveals the underlying skin disorder.

The collodion membrane is due to abnormal desquamation (a peeling process). It is due to mutation of certain genes and is usually an autosomal recessive, congenital ichthyosis (scaly skin condition). However 10% of collodion babies have normal underlying skin – a mild presentation known as ‘self-healing’ collodion baby.

Collodion babies are at high risk of some complications. The cracking and peeling of the membrane increase the risk of infection from microorganisms. These infants are also at risk for fluid loss, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, body temperature instability, and pneumonia.

Collodion babies should be placed in a high humidity chamber, and monitored closely for complications. A high humidity environment will allow slow, gradual sloughing off of the membrane. The membrane will come off on its own and should not be peeled off. Application of mild petroleum-based moisturizers may help the infant feel more comfortable while the membrane is peeling off.

Comet Snowball near Mars

A comet the size of a small mountain is about to skim past Mars, and NASA hopes its spacecraft will be able to photograph the once-in-a-million-years encounter. The comet, known as Siding Spring (C/2013 A1), is set to hurtle past Mars at a close distance of about 141,600 kilometeres. The closest pass is expected to happen on Monday at 4.27 am AEDT. Astronomers do not expect it will come any where near colliding with Mars, but they do hope it will be close enough to reveal clues about the origins of the solar system. That is because the comet is believed to have originated billions of years ago in the Oort Cloud, a distant region of space at the outskirts of the solar system. The comet is flying through space at a breakneck speed of 200,000 kilometres per hour. Another interesting thing about the comet, about a mile wide in diameter, is that it is only about as solid as a pile of talcum powder.

The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called Mangalyaan "Mars-craft" (Sanskrit मंगल maṅgala "Mars" + यान yāna "craft) is a Mars orbiter launched into Earth orbit on 5 November 2013 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was successfully inserted into orbit of Mars on 24 September 2014, making India the first country in the world to successfully send a spacecraft to Mars on its very first attempt.

The success of the Mars Orbiter Mission, lauded for its low price tag of Rs 450 crore, will boost India's five-decade-old space programme.

With a spacecraft around Mars, India joins a small group of nations that have successfully sent probes to orbit or land on Mars. Others, however, failed several times initially.

Chef killed by severed snake head

A snake came back from the dead to deliver a deadly bite to a chef, 20 minutes after he had chopped its head off. The chef was preparing a dish from cobra flesh when the snake’s head bit him.

Victim Peng Fan had chopped off the head of the Indochinese spitting cobra, a rare delicacy in Asia, to prepare for making the special dish. But when he went to throw the severed snake head into the bin it bit him on the hand, injecting him with fast-acting, deadly venom.

Police say Mr Peng died before he could be given lifesaving anti-venom in hospital.

44-Year-Old Fetus in 84 –Year-Old Woman

A 44-year-old fetus has been found in an 84-year-old Brazilian woman. The discovery came last Friday, when the woman's intense stomach pains landed her in a hospital in Tocantins state in central Brazil.

X-rays revealed the unthinkable: a "stone baby." This is a rare phenomenon known as lithopedion, in which the fetus grows and then dies outside of the uterus. With the body unable to rid itself of it, the dead fetus is instead covered in calcium as a means of protection, resulting in the "stone baby."

The X-rays discovered the face, the bones of the arms, of the legs, the ribs, and the spine of the fetus, which is believed to have died at between 20 and 28 weeks. That woman says she does not want the fetus removed.

Dolly - First mammal to be cloned

Dolly was a female domestic sheep, and the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell, using the process of nuclear transfer. She was cloned by Ian Wilmut, Keith Campbell and colleagues at the Roslin Institute, part of the University of Edinburgh. She was born on 5 July 1996 and she lived until the age of six, at which point she died from a progressive lung disease. The cell used as the donor for the cloning of Dolly was taken from a mammary gland, and the production of a healthy clone therefore proved that a cell taken from a specific part of the body could recreate a whole individual.

Dolly was created using the technique of somatic cell nuclear transfer, where the cell nucleus from an adult cell is transferred into an unfertilised oocyte (developing egg cell) that has had its nucleus removed. The hybrid cell is then stimulated to divide by an electric shock, and when it develops into a blastocyst it is implanted in a surrogate mother. Dolly was the first clone produced from a cell taken from an adult mammal. The production of Dolly showed that genes in the nucleus of such a mature differentiated somatic cell are still capable of reverting to an embryonic totipotent state, creating a cell that can then go on to develop into any part of an animal. Dolly's existence was announced to the public on 22 February 1997.

Dolly lived her entire life at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh. There she was bred with a Welsh Mountain ram and produced six lambs in total. Her first lamb, named Bonnie, was born in April 1998. The next year Dolly produced twin lambs Sally and Rosie, and she gave birth to triplets Lucy, Darcy and Cotton in the year after that. In the autumn of 2001, at the age of four, Dolly developed arthritis and began to walk stiffly, but this was successfully treated with anti-inflammatory drugs.

On 14 February 2003, Dolly was euthanized because she had a progressive lung disease and severe arthritis. A Finn Dorset such as Dolly has a life expectancy of around 11 to 12 years, but Dolly lived to be only six years of age. A post-mortem examination showed she had a form of lung cancer called Jaagsiekte, which is a fairly common disease of sheep and is caused by the retrovirus JSRV. Such lung diseases are a particular danger for sheep kept indoors, and Dolly had to sleep inside for security reasons.

After cloning was successfully demonstrated through the production of Dolly, many other large mammals have been cloned, including horses and bulls. Cloning may have uses in preserving endangered species and may become a viable tool for reviving extinct species. Cloning of domesticated animals could be important in the future production of transgenic livestock.

The discovery, the first of its kind in the world and the first time gold particles have been found in living material.

Geoscientists in Perth, Australia have discovered gold particles in the leaves, twigs and bark of eucalyptus trees, claiming a "eureka" moment that could revolutionise gold mining. CSIRO researchers believe the trees, sitting on top of gold deposits buried deep underground, suck up the gold in their search for moisture during times of drought.

Scientists said, "To actually see the gold particles in the leaves was quite a eureka moment for us and they were not expecting it"

The trees appear to be telling scientists what is happening under the earth's surface. The particular trees that were researched upon appear to be bringing up gold from 30 metres depth, which is about the equivalent of a 10-storey building.

The research group used the CSIRO's Maia detector for x-ray elemental imaging at the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne to analyse extremely small particles at high resolution.

The portions of gold are about one-fifth the diameter of a human hair. The researchers said they have also found gold in the leaves of other trees, such as the Acacia mulga.

Gold existed not only in trees but in shrubs that are growing beneath the trees as well.

Chinese scientists have successfully developed a new cheaper way of getting connected to internet by using signals sent through light bulbs instead of radio frequencies as in 'Wi-Fi', a move expected to radically change process of online connectivity.

Four computers can be connected to internet through one- watt LED bulb using light as a carrier instead of traditional radio frequencies, as in Wi-Fi.

Under the new discovery dubbed as 'Li-Fi', a light bulb with embedded microchips can produce data rates as fast as 150 megabits per second, which is 20 times faster than the average broadband connection in China.

We at StudyChamps were looking for the right platform to expand our educational website and take it to the next level. I must mention that it was really a very time consuming and difficult task to evaluate various LMS platforms available until we came across LearnDash. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it covers most facilities we were looking for, and we started our journey towards embracing the new platform. Even before we purchased LearnDash, it was very evident that the team was very willing to support and prompt in resolving queries. We are now working on the LearnDash platform backstage now.

According to scientific research plants do complex arithmetic calculations to make sure they have enough food to get them through the night.

According to scientists at Britain's John Innes Centre plants adjust their rate of starch consumption to prevent starvation during the night when they are unable to feed themselves with energy from the sun. They can even compensate for an unexpected early night.

During the night, mechanisms inside the leaf measure the size of the starch store and estimate the length of time until dawn. Information about time comes from an internal clock, similar to the human body clock. The capacity to perform arithmetic calculation is vital for plant growth and productivity.

An Iranian scientist, Ali Razeghi claims to have invented a ‘time machine’. The machine can predict up to eight years in the future with 98 per cent accuracy.

The machine, dubbed ‘The Aryayek Time Traveling Machine’ supposedly works by using a complex set of algorithms which he says took him ten years to develop.

The device easily fits into the size of a personal computer case and can predict details of the next five to eight years of the life of its users. A government can see five years into the future and would be able to prepare itself for challenges.

The scientist is expecting to market this invention among states as well as individuals once they reach a mass production stage.

Brooke Greenberg is 20 years old, but she remains forever trapped inside the body and mind of a toddler, due to a mystery medical condition that has baffled medical experts for years.

According to her parents, from age one to four, Brooke changed. She got a little bit bigger. But from age four to five, she stopped growing.

Since then, Brooke's height and weight of 16 pounds and 20 inches have remained a constant. She wears diapers, is pushed in a stroller, gets fed through a feeding tube due to a too-small esophagus, and communicates like an infant would.

As per the doctors there is no other known case like Brooke's in the world. And at least one medical expert believes that Brooke's condition could hold the key to the fountain of youth.

Scientists Discovered a Super-Earth

Scientists have discovered a ‘super-earth’ which could have a life-supporting climate.

The planet lies in a multi-world solar system 42 light years from the sun and is seven times the size of earth. The planet's 197-day year means its climate might be sufficient for life. The longer orbit of the new planet means that its climate and atmosphere may be just right to support life.

It is, of course, too early to confirm any other similarities but the discovery will give hope to scientists of discovering other exoplanets – ‘super-earths’ circling sun-like stars.

The scientific team used the Harps instrument at the La Sill facility in Chile to make the discovery.

World's Rarest Whale Seen for First Time

The world's rarest whale has been spotted for the first time, in New Zealand, where two of the whales stranded themselves.

The two spade-toothed beaked whales, a mother and calf, stranded and died on Opape Beach on the North Island of New Zealand. The mother was 17 feet (5.3 meters) long and the calf was 11 feet (3.5 m) long.

Up until now, very little have been known about the spade-toothed beaked whale from three partial skulls collected from New Zealand and Chile over a 140-year period. This is the first time this species has ever been seen as a complete specimen.

Whale mimicking human speech

Scientists have been stunned to discover an amazing recording of a whale mimicking a human voice.

The beluga whale, named NOC died in 2007 but had spent 30 years amongst humans at the National Marine Mammal Foundation based in San Diego in California.

Dr Sam Ridgeway, the main author of the study in the journal Current Biology, said that in 1984 they started hearing sounds near the whale enclosure that recalled two people speaking in the distance, too far away to be understood.

When a diver surfaced from the whale enclosure to ask his puzzled colleagues ‘Who told me to get out?’, the team concluded the word ‘out’ which was repeated several times, had come from NOC.

Dr Ridgway reckons NOC would have heard human speech from speakers above the water, and divers communicating below the water.

The team realised they had a rare case of whale mimicry on their hands and were able to record NOC, then nine-years old.

In a bizarre incident in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, an oarfish, was washed ashore on bustling Medano Beach, which features a view of the end of the Baja California peninsula.

Oarfish are deep-water denizens that are rarely seen. But because of their long, slender appearance, and their bright-orange dorsal fins and manes, they helped spawn myths of sea serpents and sea monsters among ancient mariners.

Boy finds 30,000-year-old mammoth remains

A boy living in Russia's remote north has found the well-preserved remains of a 30,000-year-old adult mammoth, according to media reports.

The discovery was made near a weather station in the eastern Taimyr region, some 3000km northeast of Moscow.

News reports identified the boy as Yevgeny Salinder, son of a couple working at the Sopkarga polar weather station.

Salinder reportedly discovered the animal during a walk. News reports said the remains were that of a male mammoth aged 15 or 16 years, and that its skin, meat, fat hump and organs were extremely well-preserved.

According to the Pravda.ru news website, the last time mammoth remains of such quality were discovered in Russia was in 1901.

Scientists used axes, picks and a steam-blaster to melt the permafrost in an extraction operation lasting a week, the report said.

The mammoth probably died in the summer because it lacked an undercoat and had a large reserve of fat, the report said quoting Aleksei Tikhonov, deputy director of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Mysterious Baltic Sea Object

A feature on the floor of the Baltic Sea that was discovered last summer by Swedish treasure hunters is making headlines once again.

The latest media coverage draws upon an hour-long radio interview with Peter Lindberg, head of the Ocean X Team (which made the "discovery"), in which Lindberg delivers a string of cryptic and titillating statements about the "strange" and "mysterious" seafloor object his team has been exploring for a year.

Lindberg discusses various possibilities for what the object might be: "It has these very strange stair formations, and if it is constructed, it must be constructed tens of thousands of years ago before the Ice Age," he said in the radio interview. (The peak of the most recent Ice Age occurred some 20,000 years ago.)

"If this is Atlantis, that would be quite amazing," he said. Atlantis is a mythical underwater city referred to in ancient legends.

Lindberg acknowledges that the object could instead be a natural formation, such as a meteorite that penetrated the ice during the Ice Age, or an underwater volcano; however, he gives the impression that scientists are baffled by it.

Skipper finds bottle with message nearly a century old

A Scottish skipper has hauled in what could be his most unusual catch - a bottle containing a message written 98 years ago.

Andrew Leaper was pulling in his nets when the bottle appeared.

To his amazement, he discovered on opening it that it contained a message asking the finder to record the date and location of where it was found and return it to director of the Scotland Fishery Board to collect a sixpence reward.

Further investigation revealed that the bottle - 646B - had been set adrift as part of 1,890 by Captain CH Brown of the Glasgow School of Navigation.

It was designed to sink and float close to the seabed to monitor currents.

Only 315 of the bottles have ever been found.

Poodle Moth

It may look like it's just dropped in from Middle-Earth but this fluffy creature is actually a moth. With its bulging eyes and cotton wool-like coat the moth almost doesn't seem real.

When taxonomist Dr Arthur Anker posted his bizarre picture on Flickr other users were at first skeptical about whether the photograph was a fake.

The multi-legged insect is casually tagged a 'Poodle Moth' and there is not mention of a more scientific name.

But believe it or not the strange being really is a true native of Venezuela, where the scientist caught it on camera.

World’s Oldest Person

According to the Guinness World Records, Besse Cooper is the world's oldest person. She is 116 years old. Guinness claims Cooper is one of only eight people who have reached 116.

In honor of Cooper's achievement, a bridge was named after her in Monroe, Ga., where she lives by the Walton County Board of Commissioners. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday, Aug. 24 for the bridge opening.

Cooper was certified as the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records in January 2011, although she briefly had to give up her title when it was discovered that Brazilian-born Maria Gomes Valentin was 48 days older. But when Valentin died six months later, Cooper was reinstated as the world's oldest person.

Cooper was born in Sullivan, Tenn., in 1896, according to the Walton Tribune. She moved to Monroe during World War I to become a teacher. In 1924, she married her husband Luther and the couple had four children. Today, Cooper has 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, according to the Guinness World Records.

Cooper has a secret to achieving 116 years of life.

"I mind my own business," she told the Guinness World Records. "And I don't eat junk food."

NASA's newly landed Mars science rover Curiosity snapped the first colour image of its surroundings while an orbiting sister probe photographed litter left behind during the rover's daring do-or-die descent to the surface, scientists said Tuesday. Curiosity's colour image, taken with a dust cover still on the camera lens, shows the north wall and rim of Gale Crater, a vast basin where the nuclear-powered, six-wheeled rover touched down Sunday night after flying through space for more than eight months.

Burmese Python Found With Record 87 Eggs

A double record-setting Burmese python has been found in the Florida Everglades.

At 17 feet, 7 inches (5.3 meters) in length, it is the largest snake of its kind found in the state and it was carrying a record 87 eggs. Scientists say the finding highlights how dangerously comfortable the invasive species has become in its new home.

The giant female python was discovered in the Everglades National Park and had been stored since May in a freezer at the museum; on Friday, researchers at the museum studied its internal anatomy, making the wild discovery.
