Hello All!

I am on winter break from grad school so I have time to make a small post on things I have been doing! Only three more quarters to go!

Here is my latest living room update. I finally got one of the sofa's I have been eyeing on my Pinterest boards! My stencil wall looks much better in this picture. I give directions on how I did it in this blog in another post if you want to know how I did it.

FLOORING

Hello everyone!

Happy to tell you that I finally did new flooring in my kitchen and bathrooms. Who put them down? I did! Yes, me. I have never put floors down before but I am brave and not afraid to mess up! (and on a budget).

I have been eyeing flooring for a while so I decided that I wanted to do Home Depot's (not affiliated) Allure flooring as it is billed as being easy to install.

First, I looked up 'How-To' and video's on YouTube for some idea of what I was getting into.I measured my flooring and added10% for totals I would need. (I ended up with more then I needed but I am okay with that).Then, I read the directions BEFORE I bought the flooring.
I then went to buy a special order from the store and I GOT LUCKY! I was going to order the 'Barnwood' but they were having a "Black Friday" (in April) sale and the oak was on sale for 0.99/sq foot. It was not what I wanted but it isn't bad either and after doing the math I HAD TO GET IT. It cut my budget by more then HALF!
I bought the # of cases I needed and took them home. I did let them 'acclimate' in my house for about 2 weeks because well, I didn't have time to do them right away but the instructions say AT LEAST 48 hours.
So here are some things I learned putting down these floors: (some of this may be common knowledge for you, but it wasn't for me)
1.) I tried using a carpenters square and a blade for a straight cut but I COULD NOT keep it totally straight. I ended up going to my local ACE store and renting a vinyl cutter ($15.00/day) for straight lines, this made it SO much easier!
2.) No matter how much I waste, the floor seams 'came together? much better if you always used a new plank and not a "cut piece".
3.) Make sure you stagger the planks.
4.) The last plank is a b***h. I tried my best but it was not perfect.
5.) I did my bathroom and I highly recommend you take the toilet out. It really isn't all that hard!

I have been so busy doing "things" to post I realize that I haven't posted much because it is a slow layered process to decorate fully when you lack money. (I did paint those lovely navy walls.) Here is a quickie for all those necklaces hanging around.

(Another) Framing of a mirror!

I have to admit that I got super lucky on this one! I was at my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore (a great place to find all kinds of things), when I found this oval piece. I thought just maybe it might fit my mirror so I bought it. It fit! I re-painted it then put it up with nails this time because it allowed room for me to do so.

So I am currently sidelined in doing projects because I have a huge "boot" on my foot, awaiting MRI results for a possible posterior tibial tendon tear. I was watching TV where they showed the girl whom put diaper cream all over her brother's face. I thought, "I have a great picture like that!"

So my intro into this picture. I am a single mom and at the time I was working night shift. Well, I fell asleep by accident. When I woke up, this is what I walked into! She looks like an Aborigine. What is that you say? That is mommy's foundation with baby powder sprinkled throughout! Notice the laptop that died! lol Needless to say she did not get in trouble because it was Mommy's fault for falling asleep. It was a mess to clean up and I had to get a new laptop!

Framing the boring bathroom mirror!

Hi all!
I finally got around to framing the bathroom mirror! Total Cost $53.00!!!

How'd you do it? SIMPLE!

1.) I took measurements of the mirror.
2.) I went to my local hardware store and found trim that I wanted. I chose a pine smooth trim because I wanted a modern feel and I also wanted to stain the wood like I did the cabinets.
I bought the trim and "liquid nails" for a total of $53.00 and I have a whole bottle of the liquid nail left.
3.) I cut the wood to the length I wanted then saw ed the 45 degree angles. (sweat equity for me b/c I used a hand saw). I would suggest to lay it out and mark the angles before you actually cut them. (I almost goofed).
4.) I then stained the trim to what I previously stained my cabinets too. (see other post for which products I used.) I also put on a urethane over the stain.
5.) I made sure everything lined up then I went upstairs and used "liquid nails" to put the frame onto my existing mirror!

IT WAS THAT EASY! Now I have to change lights, floor, and paint...
