Skyline is a code-based generative music video I directed and programmed for the track Skyline (itunes.apple.com/us/album/skyline-single/id1039135793) by Karma Fields (soundcloud.com/karmafields). The entire music video consists of multiple stages that are programmed and generated using Processing.

One of the core principles for generating the visual patterns in Skyline is Voronoi tessellation. This geometric model dates back to 1644 in René Descartes’s vortex theory of planetary motion, and has been widely used by computational artists, for example, Robert Hodgin (vimeo.com/207637), Frederik Vanhoutte (vimeo.com/86820638), Diana Lange (flickr.com/photos/dianalange/sets/72157629453008849/), Jon McCormack (jonmccormack.info/~jonmc/sa/artworks/voronoi-wall/), etc.

In Skyline's systems, seeds for generating the diagram are sorted into various types of agents following certain behaviors and appearance transformations. They are driven by either the song's audio spectrum with different customized layouts, or animated sequence of the vocalist, collectively forming a complex and organic outcome.

Break the Ice @Ars2015

Video documentation of Break the Ice interactive installation at Interface Culture Post-Post Exhibition at Ars Electronica 2015 Post City, in Linz, Austria, 3 to 7 September 2015.

People are detected over a circular rug in real-time by a kinect sensor. The ice cracks depending on the positions of the users and time, which they spent there. Their movements can either make the ice recede, making a video visible underneath, or make the ice form. The sound corresponding to the graphics is also generated in real-time using overtone/supercollider, involving the cracks, running water and ice formation. Three synthesizers were created, marking the three moments of the interaction in the installation. The animation uses a 3D model, implemented in processing in combination with shaders in OpenGL Shading Language.

I am post futurism, post modernism, post object, color, light or shadow. I am post structure, narrative and melody. I am post intellectual so don't try to conceptualise me.

Its a play ground and you look like its your first round. Spinning around and around yourself you keep on looking at the horizon hoping to get somewhere endless, pointless.

The legs are tired, the head is dizzy and the body is weak. The flying horses are all gone
now and the carousel is spinning out of control, so stop it, please. I want to get off.

This City is an audio-visual performance piece by Mark Eats. It explores what happens when a soundtrack controls the world as much as the world influences its soundtrack. All effects are in‑camera and controlled live.

I’m interested in what happens when working on visuals and music in parallel, adding features to the visuals software when the music demands it and writing the music as a soundtrack to moments that emerge from the code. The imagery is not an add-on, it’s part of the composition process.

The visuals software was built using openFrameworks and operates much like a game engine. A map is created with rules for traffic flow, junctions and traffic lights. Thousands of cars can be added, each with their own personality, some preferring to drive faster or more aggressively than others. The world is then influenced by MIDI inputs that affect parameters such as the simulation speed, exposure length, camera moves or even gravity.

In Touch With The Illusion

The Industrial Design Show is an annual event organized by FH Joanneum, University Of Applied Sciences and the Creative Industries Styria. It showcases graduation projects of Industrial Design students and promotes exchange with international industry professionals.

Typically students handcraft physical models of their designs and install them in an exhibition style setting, providing additional information on posters and maps. While this method is perfectly suitable for showcasing the general appearance of a model, its downside lies within the static nature of said process. Since visitors of the exhibition are not allowed to touch the objects in order to prevent damage it is difficult to demonstrate functions of a model or show different variations, use cases and settings.

For the 2015 edition of the event we were asked to develop a more interactive and engaging way of presenting Industrial Design exhibits by invigorating a sustainable and affordable concept of the Volkswagen Multivan: The T–One.

Nature Abstraction - Mapping Excerpt

Excerpt taken from the video from the projection mapping on the Installation 'Nature Abstraction'.
The visuals have all been recorded in real life using analogue techniques, some of them are : feedback recording from a projector, light refraction, water reflection, microscopic elements, macro liquids, semi-transparent plastic filters and more.

Recorded in Raw res. using a canon 7D with magic lantern, then have been processed on the computer and exported ready to be mapped onto the faces of the cube shaped installation.

The project gives an insight of their aspects through virtual reality, where they appear as three planets: Birth, Communion and Aether; Each accompained with scores designed to facilitate meditative state and relaxation;
The fractals have also been processed through Google’s Deepdream, transforming the fractal landscapes into morphing psychedelic patterns that our eye will recognize as
very familiar shapes although the way the images are created only aims to create a variety of random patterns on the canvas.
The audience is guided to explore these planets and dive into their vast complexities as well as observing the contrast between the entirely digital created world inside the VR against the fully analogue created film projected onto the faces of the cube which have been filmed in real life, recreating using analogue visual effects and various chemical elements.

Sinapsis TRIpartita is a performace that includes dance, electroacoustic music and video.

Each movement of the ballerina affects the electroacoustic music and the video projections, creating a interactive dance performance. The music is done using SuperCollider. Every sound created from SuperCollider and the dancer's movement is processed with a sound detector that is later send via OSC message to the video projection, for it to be change. Also every physical movement that captures the Kinect affects the visual. All of this is done in real time.

Written entirely in Cinder/C++. I used openCV, OSC, msaFluids, openNI, and the kinect.

Sinapsis was presented in Leon, Mexico, march 2012.
