Setelah album duet yang berjudul “Gems”, Michael Bolton akan membuat sebuah album kompilasi yang akan dirilisnya pada 12 Maret 2012 mendatang. Lee: Saya rasa, kami memiliki proyek berbeda-beda selama beberapa tahun ke belakang, dan proyek tersebut membuat kami semakin kuat (dewasa) secara individu, kemudian kami menyatu kembali dalam grup ini dan membuat grup ini semakin solid.

Saat ini banyak sekali boyband yang ada di tangga lagu dunia, seperti JLS, The Wanted, dan One Direction, apa pendapat kalian tentang mereka? Apakah ini seperti sebuah kompetisi, dan bagaimana kalian mempersiapkan diri?
Duncan : Tidak (Rendy), kami tidak menganggap demikian. Kami tidak berpikir bahwa ini persaingan. Terutama JLS, kami mengenal mereka cukup lama. Yang jelas semuanya ini berkaitan dengan kerja keras. Dan kami sangat berharap yang terbaik untuk mereka semua, dan kami sangat mendukung mereka.

Di tahun 2005, Blue sempat bubar dan tidak aktif. Bagaimana kalian menjaga kebersamaan selama waktu tersebut? Dan apa perbedaan yang menonjol antara Blue yang dulu dengan yang sekarang?
Simon: Katakanlah begini, berdasarkan pengalaman kami mengerjakan proyek solo kami masing-masing yang membuat kami harus lebih berfokus dalam penyempurnaan jiwa seni kami, dan kami bawa itu ke dalam Blue saat ini, sehingga membuat kami lebih kuat. Kami merasa bahwa kami harus lebih menikmati keadaan kami saat ini dibandingkan yang terakhir kali, meskipun kami sangat senang dengan kesuksesan Blue dahulu. Jadi, kali ini kami tidak akan menyia-nyiakan waktu (dan kesempatan) yang ada ini.

Yang terakhir, bisa sampaikan sesuatu untuk fans kalian di Indonesia?
Simon: Kami ingin semua fans di Indonesia datang ke konser kami, menyanyikan semua hits kami, dan kami harap mereka tahu seluruh liriknya. Jadi, ambil semua album Blue yang kamu punya, dan mulailah menghafal (liriknya).

Apa harapan terbesar kalian untuk konser mendatang?
Simon: Yang kami harapkan hanya bisa bersenang-senang. Kami hanya ingin melihat banyak fans kami bernyanyi bersama, dan menikmati konser kami.. Dan kalian juga bisa follow kami di @officialblue.

Days are Forgotten menjadi single pertama yang diperkenalkan band asal Inggris, Kasabian, untuk album keempat mereka, Velociraptor!. Dibuka dengan beat berderap ala musik Hip Hop, single ini seolah-olah memberi petunjuk jika Kasabian akan mencoba warna baru dalam album terbaru mereka. Setelah mendengar Velociraptor!, kesan tersebut tidak sepenuhnya salah, namun juga tidak berarti benar. Jangan pusing dulu. Velociraptor! berbeda karena mempersembahkan banyak elemen baru dalam materi mereka namun tidak benar-benar melenceng dari pakem Kasabian yang kita kenal.

Dalam sejarah panjang band-band Inggris, selalu terselip nama-nama paten yang bahkan masih dikenang sampai sekarang. Kasabian mungkin masih perlu waktu yang lebih panjang untuk membuktikan eksistensi mereka, namun sebagai salah satu nama mapan saat ini, jelas ekspektasi yang besar terhadap mereka menjadi sulit dhindarkan. Namun dengan Velociraptor! tampaknya Kasabian tidak ingin memiliki pretensi untuk membuktikan apa-apa. Tampaknya album ini adalah sebuah surat cinta kepada kejayaan music rock itu sendiri, yang coba diungkit dengan mengandalkan ciri khas mereka.

Indikasi tersebut sudah ditunjukkan melalui track pembuka, Let’s Roll Just Like We Used To, sebuah ode kepada rock n roll klasik periode dekade 60-an, yang mengadopsi kesan psikadelik yang lekat dengan era tersebut, sehingga memiliki kesan megah dan melodramatis, seolah-olah lagu tersebut adalah soundtrack sebuah film agen rahasia 007.  Atau coba simak Velociraptor! yang hadir dalam semangat punk yang memulai kejayaan di dekade 70-an. Semangat synth pop yang beken di tahun 80-an kemudian dihadirkan dalam I Hear Voices. Dalam dekade 90-an, kali ini Kasabian hadir dalam semangat alternative rock yang penuh dalam Re-Wire. Sementara itu trend industrial yang dulu sempat merambah akhir 90-an menjadi semangat dalam Switchblade Smiles.

Akan tetapi kekuatan Velociraptor! bukan hanya itu. Kasabian kita kenal karena kekuatan penulis lagu mereka, baik dari lirik maupun notasi. Sebagaimana umumnya band-band yang kita kenal sebagai bagian dari Brit-Pop, ada yang khas dengan lagu-lagu mereka. Melodi yang cantik berpadu dengan vokal khas Inggris yang kemudian melebur dalam lagu yang sangat renyah untuk disimak. Album ini masih banyak menyimpan materi seperti itu. Contoh saja Goodbye Kiss yang manis dan mengalun romantis. La Fée Verte (The Green Fairy) mungkin terdengar gloomy dan edgy namun sulit untuk tidak larut di dalamnya. Kadar gloomyyang lebih cerah ada di Man of Simple Pleasures yang sedikit mengingatkan akan Bluer di awalk karir mereka. Sebagai penutup, ada Neon Neon yang berjalan lirih dan mengawang, namun terdengar sempurna sebagai finale untuk album ini.

Setiap lagu yang terdapat di dalam Velociraptor! dibangun berdasarkan melodi yang sederhana namun memiliki chrous yang memikat dalam skala yang epik yang tampaknya dibangun untuk menggiring lagu-lagu tersebut pada ekpektasi pendengarnya pada awalnya namun kemudian secara mengejutkan menampilan twist-and-turn yang seru di pertengahan lagu. Bagi sebagian orang, dengan mudah mereka akan mengkritisi album ini sebagai album yang terlalu terformulasi dan repititif, demi mengejar kesan ramah di kuping atau catchy (for whatever that means).

Namun Kasabian harus dipuji karena mampu menghadirkan materi yang sangat gampang dicerna tanpa harus menganaktirikan kualitas. Yep, setiap lagu yang terdapat di album ini dihadirkan dengan tata produksi yang matang. Dan dijamin, tidak ada lagu yang tidak nikmat untuk didengar. Toh sebuah album ujung-ujungnya mengejar afeksi dari pendengarnya, bukan? Jika itu tujuannya, maka Velociraptor! berhasil untuk itu.

Saya membayangkan dalam konteks dunia paralel Adele adalah seorang dewi. Layaknya Athena dalam mitos Yunani kuno, dia menggambarkan sosok tangguh dan rapuh disaat yang bersamaan. Ada kalanya dia mampu menjabarkan kesedihan dengan begitu lugas, tapi ada saatnya juga emosinya begitu tumpah ketika melihat sebuah hubungan.

Apakah Set Fire To The Rain semacam menikmati Love The Way You Lie bagian kedua? Karena menyimak lirik yang ada, Adele memberikan kontradiksi dalam setiap frase yang digunakan. Even now when we’re already over, I can’t help myself from looking for you. Sebuah rebound yang diharapkan bisa terjadi sejenak pasca berakhirnya hubungan? Ataukah hanya perasaan denial yang tidak berkesudahan?

Track ini menjadi memorable ketika piano di intro mengalun memberikan ketegasan. 8 detik pertama hanya memberi kita bayangan, akan seperti apa track ini berjalan. Memasuki bagian lirik, barulah Adele memberikan ceritanya tentang percintaan yang tidak bisa ditebak. Sebuah anthem yang bisa dinyanyikan oleh mereka yang memiliki status In Relathionship and It’s Complicated.

Simak bagian sebelum reffrain, dimana Adele seperti mengumpulkan semua tenaga kemudian menghempasnya dalam barisan reffrain yang mudah dicerna. Cukup beberapa kali menyimak, reffnya sudah langsung terngiang-ngiang di kepala. Track Set Fire To The Rain juga menjadi pilihan yang sulit ketika akan dirilis sebagai single. Maklum saja, track ini harus bersaing dengan Rumours Has It yang lebih dulu terdengar familiar.

Adele menciptakan sebagian besar lirik di album 21. Track Set Fire To The Rain, nama Fraser T. Smith menjadi nama tandemnya. Fraser T sendiri lebih dahulu terkenal dengan karyanya, Hurt yang dibawakan oleh Leona Lewis. Jadi dia sangat mengerti ketika ballad dengan mid tempo ini akan diberi suasana seperti apa. Putus asa? Marah? Sedih? Semuanya tergabung menjadi satu.

Pertama kali dinyanyikan secara live pada bulan April tahun lalu di The Graham Norton Show, menjadikan track ini seolah-olah menjadi api dalam sekam. Potensi untuk membesar sangat diyakini, namun harus mendahului dua single yang dilepas sebelumnya. Hasilnya sekarang? Dia mampu menjadi jawara di berbagai chart dunia, dan chart Billboard Top 100 juga sudah mencatatnya sebagai posisi puncak.

But there’s a side to you that I never knew, never knew, mungkin inilah penjabaran paling lugas yang bisa diberikan Adele. Ketika setiap hubungan memiliki romansanya sendiri, dan selalu ada sisi yang tidak bisa tertebak bagaimana akhirnya. Cheers!
